Commercials And Target Buyers Based On Gender
For some people its the catchy jingle that catches their attention. For others it may be the famous
celebrity that appears on their screen. Some people are even drawn in by the corny catch phrases and
over dramatic acting. No matter the case, companies tend to spend billions of dollars in advertising,
pursuing customers to buy their must have products, and spending whatever money necessary to get
their messages across to those watching. Throughout the years, marketing executives have realized
that they must refine their commercials and target buyers based on gender. Advertisements on
television have exposed images which are stereotypical representations and somehow have been
constructing cultural ideas about gender along the way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The viewer does not know where these women are running towards but soon more and more women
appear on the screen; some running in the jungle, some swimming through the ocean, and others
climbing a mountain. One might address that through all this activity, these perfectly thin women are
still wearing basically nothing on their body and seem to be competing to get somewhere for they are
pushing and shoving one another. Then out of no where, there is one average looking, twenty
something, man just standing in the middle of the beach, with a look of pure joy, while millions of
women are clawing their way to him. This man is simply putting on Axe deodorant and the words
Spray More, Get More. The Axe Effect comes up on the screen right before the commercial ends. The
ad portrays how the use of this deodorant will make any man irresistible to every woman and to many
boys watching the commercial, they probably wouldn t complain if this situation happened to them.
Dove however took a different approach in selling their Dove Clinical Protection Deodorant. The
commercial opens up with the words what happens when beauty meets strength as the song Pretty
Baby by Minnutes happily plays in the background. Cue different videos of women applying the
deodorant as they confidently get ready for their day. Phrases such as will take herself on a date today
and will run with the guys today begin to appear on the screen. The ad continues to follow

The Success Of Cruise Ships
Looking at today s mega fleets with their mammoth ships that hold 4,000 or more passengers, it is
easy to forget how far the industry has come in these past twenty five years. While cruise ships are
now situated around the globe in ports ranging from Europe to Australia, the Americas to Asia, and
drawing passengers from the local populaces, it was not always that way. In the 1980s, while most
observers believed the industry had the potential for rapid growth, cruising struggled to cast off
misconceptions and widen its appeal to the mass market. It was still largely a North American focused
business.
Pleasure Cruising s Heritage
The concept of pleasure cruising, as opposed to point to point transportation by sea, dates back more

The industry, however, got past its fears of new construction and by the early 1980s a second
generation of cruise ships was being built. This group began with HAPAG s 30,000 gross ton mv
Europa launched in 1981 followed by Carnival Cruise Lines 35,265 gross ton mv Tropicale, Home
Lines 35,143 gross ton mv Atlantic and Royal Caribbean s 37,584 gross ton mv Song of America. Yet
while the second generation of cruise ships had gotten larger and carried over 1,000 passengers, they
remained mostly focused on the Caribbean. There were few exceptions to what was considered the
optimal size for a cruise ship, one being the ss Norway. While she was a converted liner as opposed to
be new build, at 70,000 gross ton and able to carry 2,000 passengers, she tantalized the industry with
the potential for big ships. It would take eight years, but in 1988 Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines
responded by introducing the 73,192 gross ton mv Sovereign of the Seas, with a capacity of 2,282, the
first new build of this size since the rms Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1968.
The industry however was struggling to propel its growth and overcome self inflicted problems
including overcapacity. In 1980, there were only about thirty cruise lines and seventy five ships with
just around 40,000 berths worldwide. Nevertheless, as the decade progressed the industry s growth
started to accelerate so that by 1990 thirty six companies operated 100

Techniques In Edward Scissorhands
Does abnormal people like the way they are hated by the ordinary people? The movie Edward
Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton, is about a man named Edward who has hands that are scissors.
He was fabricated by the inventor who lived in a mysterious, gloomy castle. The reason why his hands
were scissors, was because the inventor died before he replaced it with human hands. That the
inventor was dead, Edward was left out and living in the castle all by himself; until, when a local Avon
saleswoman, Peg Boggs went into the castle and saw Edward. She felt frightened of his hands at first.
However, she realizes that Edward is harmless and lonely so she decides to take him to her home.
Once Peg introduced Edward to everyone in Peg s neighborhood, most people got along with him.
Edward was also recognized as a talented, trustworthy person once he proved his skills on hedge
trimming and hair cutting. However, not everyone accepted him and at last, the whole neighborhood
start to reject him. As a result, Edward ends up living back up in the castle, his home. In the movie

Tim Burton uses low angles, eye level angles and high angles in order to contrast human and mans in
a distinctive way as well as address the relationship between them. Additionally, he also uses closeup
shots and medium shots to create mood and impression and at the same time, show that Edward and
people of the neighborhood live in very different conditions. Both of these cinematic techniques leave
the audience with meanings which justifies the theme of the movie. These methods of filming shape
meaning as well as cause the movie to turn out as an interesting one. Some people might be somehow
different than others by an extreme amount, but do understand that we still have sameness within each
other, and they have no reason to be disliked

Examples Of Racial Stereotyping
Racial Stereotyping
Racial stereotyping is a classification of beliefs about distinctive characteristics of members of the
same ethnic race. While some claim that it is apart of the past and does not exist today, many factors
prove otherwise. In today s society, racial stereotyping is evident in police brutality cases, the mass
media, and in the film industry.
Racial stereotyping is still evident today proven by police brutality being justified. Over 20 percent of
black unarmed people killed by police are women (Martis 1). When questioned why the officer had to
shoot them, their responses imply that it was because she was an angry black woman. These women
that are killed, despite being unarmed, were not combative or argumentative with ... Show more

In movies, many African Americans are portrayed as these characters that are stereotyped despite it
being untrue. In the movie Malibu s Most Wanted, the character Brad who is a new rapper ...dresses
and talks like he s straight outta Compton... (Coloma 581). The stereotype that an African American
rapper must look and dress a certain way is still existing today. Almost everyone watches movies and
depicts African American rappers in a negative light as being from the ghetto and being aggressive
and dangerous. Another stereotype among African American are the ...negative stereotypes that depict
blacks as minstrels, cooks, servants, and as slow witted and inept persons ( 583). Either African
Americans are stereotyped as being aggressive and having an affiliation to a gang or they are general
labourers and unsuccessful due to their race. Asian Americans are depicted ...such as architects,
dentists, medical doctors, nurses ( 586). Asian characters are smart and successful because of the
stereotype that all Asians are academically smart. Many Asian actors have criticized Hollywood for
not representing them in different lights and the lack of representation given to Asians unless it is to be
one of the above stated roles. The racial stereotyping even if portrayed as positive, such as being Asian
makes you smart, should still be perceived negatively because racial stereotyping should not be
normalized in today s

The Meaning Of The Word In English Literature
During literature class, where we read narrative that goes from the middle ages to the present, I noted
that in many writings, several words appeared constantly in different stories from different authors
that nowadays, are less used or uncommon. Including bosom , alas , nay , gay . Where bosom was
used to refer to the chest as the seat of emotions. Alas used an exclamation to express sorrow, grief,
pity, or concern. These words were commonly used in the Middle English 1225 75. Nay is a denial or
refusal that was substituted simply for no . However, the word that had an even more drastic change of
its meaning was gay .
This project analyzes and investigates how common this word was in the English narrative. A
hypothesis will be created of the reasons why its meaning may have changed. An example of its use in
literature will be presented through different periods of time with different authors. At the beginning,
according to the Oxford dictionary and the website dictionary.com, gay evolved from given to or
abounding in social or other pleasures; bright or show; having or showing a merry, lively mood. To ,
in a certain period of time, changed drastically to mean sexually unrestrained or having loose morals.
Turned to be an offensive synonymous for awkward, stupid, bad or lame. At the end, nowadays is
relating to, or exhibiting sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one s own
sex; homosexual.
Hypothesis: Originally, the word gay

The Question Of Being Is The Darkest Of All Philosophy
The question of being is the darkest in all philosophy. So concluded William James in thinking about
that most basic of riddles: how did something come from nothing? The question infuriates, James
realized, because it demands an explanation while denying the very possibility of explanation. From
nothing to being there is no logical bridge, he wrote. In science, explanations are built of cause and
effect. But if nothing is truly nothing, it lacks the power to cause. It s not simply that we can t find the
right explanation it s that explanation itselffails in the face of nothing. This failure hits us where it
hurts. We are a narrative species. Our most basic understanding comes through stories, and how
something came from nothing is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ancient Greeks suggested that empty space is filled with substance a plenum, an ether. Aristotle
conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance
than earth, air, fire, or water. True nothingness was at odds with Aristotle s physics, which said that
bodies rise up or fall down as dictated by their rightful place in the natural order of things.
Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle
rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured,
could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could
be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient
ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like
James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular
speed. What was waving, and speed relative to what? The ether was a handy answer, providing both a
medium for light waves to travel through, and, as Aristotle originally imagined, a reference frame
against which all

Dantes Inferno
Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli demonstrated that the different critical exegetical positions, regarding the
Divine Comedy (whose intent appears on one side as a disciplinary and moral renewal of the Church,
and on the other side as a hidden, heretical reversion) were not free from contemporary pressures. In
fact, their own theories are able to offer a valid evidence of the nineteenth century s political and
religious debates, and for this reason, I am going to analyse the interpretation of Dante s work by Ugo
Foscolo, through both, the Discorso sul testo della Divina Commedia , and two articles that Foscolo
published in the Edinburgh Review in 1818; in addition, I am going to analyse the interpretation by
Rossetti through his work titled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously, being impossible to summarize the vast, esoteric, exegesis of Dante proposed by them, I
am feeling obliged to try to highlight some common key of readings as, for example: 1) the relation
between the symbol of the Cross (representing the Roman Church) and the Eagle (representing the
Empire), whose doctrines are linked to mankind s need for salvation. These two institutions (Church
and Empire), according Dante s thought, had to be both settled at the centre of Rome, as at the time of
the Holy Roman Empire. In addition, according to Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, Dante attacked the
Church exclusively because he wanted the renewal of the spiritual dimension, where the Church had
to abandon its material interests, leaving exclusively to the Empire the task to unify Peoples under a
unique government. In this way, both Church and Empire would have been able to help humankind for
their spiritual and material ends. 2) Another common key of reading, for Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, is
linked with the symbol of Beatrice, which is seen by the three interpreters, not as a real woman, but as
a symbol of the wisdom, present in many ancient traditions. 3) I will try to highlight the fact that the
esoteric reading of Dante, is considered by both, Foscolo and Rossetti in key heterodox, neo
Pythagorean and Ghibelline, while it is considered by Valli in super catholic key. In brief, in my thesis,
I will try to find all common passages of Dante s oeuvre, used by Foscolo,Rossetti and Valli, analysing
and comparing them in a more rigorous possible

STARTING AND NAMING A BUSINESS
Shania s is confronted with lots of decisions to make before she opens up her Christian coffeehouse
near Denver, Colorado. The challenges awaiting Shania are the type of business structure to open and
type of people to work with. Shania as a Christian should refer to Roman 8:28, And we know that all
things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to purpose.
She should therefore bring every one onboard irrespective of their religious background to run the
coffeehouse in Colorado. Kelsey involvement should be left to her and husband to decide. Whatever
the type of business she is going to run requires resources. In researching the coffee business, Shania
is confronted with either to explore the few franchise opportunities, or sole proprietorship, partnership,
corporation or LLC or even a joint venture. The first choice of business is the franchise. In a franchise,
legal binding agreement is entered into between two firms, the franchisor (the product or service
owner) and the franchisee (the firm to market the product or service in a particular location). The
franchisee pays a certain sum of money for the right to market this product (Rubin, 1978, p.224). The
franchising is more prevalent in the restaurant industry (Hoffman Preble, 2003). The two distinct
features of this business type include; first, in order to notable service components should

Violence In East Of Eden
In the novel East of Eden, by John Steinbeck, two main characters, Cathy and Adam, both commit acts
of violence, but in different ways. Cathy is a prostitute who killed her parents and left her husband,
Adam, to take care of their children, Caleb and Aron. Adam stuck around with the twins, but he was
there for them mentally leaving them with their housekeeper Lee. This caused the boys to endure the
pain of having parents not around for them during their childhood. At a first glance, Cathy s actions
were obviously more terrifying and vicious than what Adam had done, but this does not mean they
were more violent. Adam s lack of presence in Caleb and Aron s lives led to more devastating long
term effects, creating more far reaching and longer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In both circumstances, they were being quietly neglected and not receiving equality from the
surrounding communities. If the United States is a family and everyone is supposed to be treated
equal, than the mistreatment of a group in that family would cause chaos and disorder just like it did in
the Trask family. Adam s withdrawal was more violent than Cathy s actions because of the ripple
effects it caused. Cathy killed her family and poisoned her boss, but the pain she caused was fleeting.
Adam, on the other, created a more discreet violence because even he did not directly murder his
community, he created mental disturbance in his children which ultimately killed Aron. In the novel,
two kinds of violence were shown. One is the kind that is instantaneous and visible, and the other is
the kind that lingers and affects others for generations and lifetimes. The nature of Adam s violence
lingered and infected Caleb and Aron during the course of their lives and even though it may not be as
inhumane as burning his own parents such as Cathy did, the withdrawal was more violent in that the
pain managed to stay with them for

Zoos Are An Unsafe Environment For Animals
What do you see when you think of a Zoo? Usually, people think of a place to hang out with family
and friends and are educated on animals. Zoos give an opportunity for city kids or people to see wild
animals. A zoo is a place where animals live in and are put on display for people to view. Zoos travel
back to as early as 2500 B.C., when nobility started to collect exotic animals. In Europe, sixteenth
century, when early explorers traveled to the New World, they brought home all sorts of weird and
wonderful creatures like anteaters and sloths (Sunquist). The first modern zoo, opened in Vienna in
1765, but it was not until the mid to late 1800s that zoos started to become more common. The idea of
displaying wild animals to the public in the park was instantly appealing to the rising middle class of
the Victorian era (Sunquist). Though some may believe zoos are an unsafe environment for animals,
most zoos have benefited animals by educating the public, contributing to the conservation of animals
by developing breeding programs or other conservation oriented programs, and also bringing them
into a safe environment. Some critics may argue that Zoos are a harmful and inhumane method of
commercializing animals. While this may be true, zoos also are very beneficial not just to animals but
to humans because they bring communities together and foster an appreciation of animals. This
exposure motivates and educates people into protecting the animals. Rebecca Madden, a time staff

Indi Similarities And Differences And Contrast India And...
Our task for this term is to compare and contrast Australia and an Asian country. This report will
highlight the similarities and differences between my chosen country India and Australia.
Location And Population
India is located at coordinates of 20.5937° N, 78.9629° E and is 3.287 million km² in landmass. This
is fairly small compared to Australia with 7.692 million km² in landmass. Australia is located at
coordinates of 25.2744° S, 133.7751°E. Further more even though Australia is bigger it still has a
smaller people per km² rate. At 3 people per km² this is miniature compared to India with gigantic rate
of 382 people km².there is also huge difference in population as Australia has 21,508,000 and India
with a enormous population of 1,326,572,000 the difference between these populations are
1,305,064,000.
Flags
The flag of a country is always unique and represents the countries values. India s flag has the colours
green, white and orange going horizontal in this order. In the middle of the white is something called
the Ashoka Chakra it is a 24 spoke wheel that represents the 33 inscriptions on the pillars of Ashoka.
As well as boulders and cave walls the emperor had built. In contrast Australia s flag is also very
unique as it has the Southern Cross and the union jack. The union jack was adopted from English flag.
The union jack is the British flag. The union jack is on the flag because Australia is still ruled by
British Empire. The colours of the Australian flag

The Impact Of Sports On Sports And Leisure Activities
Section A Introduction Despite it being 2015, there are still many ongoing barriers which are
preventing many people of all ages, races, genders and social backgrounds from participating in sports
and leisure activities. Economically, some sports are just completely unviable to people from certain
backgrounds. Sports such as Polo are completely exclusive to a certain class of people, due to the
mass expenses required to get you started. Inner city families, some of whom may have a member of
the household unemployed would never be able to foot the cost of the bills to play Polo. Along with
the unfeasibility of the costs of certain sports, people are also being excluded from sport due to the
social side of the spectrum. Many sports are perceived as having gender ties and many children are
brought up to identify that a certain sport shouldn t be played by boys as it is a girls sport and vice
versa. This leads to a massive social stigma that is developed during the formative years of schooling
that influences children s decisions on what sports they decide to play. It can also be tied into many
cases of Homophobia in schools, where many homophobic slurs may be attached to a girl who enjoys
rugby, or a boy who enjoys gymnastics. Due to the low number of combination between the sexes in
many sports as children, this leads to a deficiency of integration as adults, therefore making it more
difficult to get involved in a sport as an adult, due to the sport being either male

Conducting Interviews
Conducting interviews is fundamental as a case manager. In order to understand more about good
interviewing, I decided to watch an interview about an addict mother conducted by Dr. Phil. While
watching this interview, I made some notes on attitudes and characteristics that I considered important
for good interviewing. The characteristics will be presented in the following paragraphs. From the
start of the interview I noticed that it is important to have good communication skills and the
interviewer should speak with confidence and knowledge about the subject. As everyone knows, Dr.
Phil is known as an expert in human behavior and in his show, he conducts interviews or talks to help
people with problems. At the beginning of the interview, Dr. Phil presented himself very straight
forward and respectfully towards the out of control addict mother. ... Show more content on

Phil took control of every situation. He maintains the position and calm while asking questions. I
could immediately see that he did not share the same values or principles as the interviewee, yet he did
not act against her behavior. Instead, he asked reflective questions so that she could know she was
wrong. There were times where the interviewee was a little bit out of control and Dr. Phil calmed her
and spoke firmly about her behavior. The interviewer conveys empathy in some ways. For example,
told her I understand what you are going through and It is difficult . Those two phrases made me
realize that the interviewer feels empathy towards the interviewee. I also noticed that the interviewer
does demonstrate cultural sensitivity towards the interviewee. Cultural sensitivity is very important in
this case because it allows us to function effectively in other cultures and value other cultures while
reducing cultural barriers between the professional and patient. Dr. Phil demonstrated cultural
sensitivity because he respected the traditions of the interviewee and her daily

Motifs In A Tale Of Two Cities
Motif: A motif is a narrative element with symbolic meaning that repeats throughout a work of
literature. Example: No fight could have been half so terrible as this dance. It was so emphatically a

Vegetarian Experiment Summary
In this lab, we conducted multiple experiments on planarians and examined their reactions toward
variety of stimuli. First and foremost, we have to be able to identify the fundamental structure of the
planarians; especially the nervous system. Planarians are grouped into Class Turbellaria. They have a
central nervous system that consists of 2 to 6 ventral nerve cords and subepideral nerve net also
known as cephalization. Cephalization is more advanced because the system now has more neurons,
sense cells, larger ganglia compared to the simple nerve net system. The ventral nerve cords are
connected to ganglia that lay interiorly to the ventral epidermis that close to the midline and run the
length of the body (Scott, 2014, p. 54). The information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, we still have not understood how planarians respond to food. One experiment was
conducted to observe the reactions of planarians toward food or chemical stimuli. When four
planarians were exposed to four different food source, 43% of the planarians moved to the first
location (squash baby food). 25% moved to the second location (chicken baby food), 2% moved to the
third location (control group), and 29% moved to the fourth location (mixture of squash and chicken
baby food). According to Inoue, planarians will release chemotaxis as a response when they are
exposed to chemical. In this case, planarians will operate the chemoreceptors to identify the location
of the food. When four planarians were placed in the middle, they quickly marked their destinations.
They would continue to move until they reach the place with high solute concentration. In this
experiment, we do not know if the all the planarians were hungry or full. For some of the planarians
that quickly moved away, we can determine that they were hungry. And when they sensory cells detect
the chemical, they quickly reacted. However, planarians references of food are not important in this
case. Despite the fact that all the foods are different, planarians might tend to move toward to places
that closest to them or sense the strongest chemical signal from. As we know that planarians are
carnivores, they prefer to feed on organic compounds and

The Copyright of Procedural Art
Traditionally, creative works such as drawings, paintings and other pictures have been protected by
copyright law. Procedurally generated art can produce works that mimic a drawing, painting or
photograph, but there is a complication in defining the work as an algorithm or a creative work.
Copyright does not extend to algorithms, so the questions follows: Is procedurally generated art
simply an algorithm that should be treated as such, or is it a creative work that should be covered by
copyright law?
Procedurally generated content in general is considered to be produced by a program rather than

Even so, when their user interfaces were compared there were a number of similarities. The judge
ruled that copying had taken place on that basis.
This precedent states that, in the UK, the end result of a program is what matters and that its internal
function is irrelevant to issues of copyright. Applied to Perlin s procedural art, this could potentially be
dangerous. If someone wished to obtain similar results to his they would have to be wary of copyright
law. Even if they could mimic his techniques without copying any of his code, they would still
potentially be found to have violated copyright since the end results would be similar.
As well as copyright law, patent law could also be an issue. European patent law expressly prohibits
the granting of patents for programs for computers (European Patent Convention, 2000). Strangely,
the United States takes the opposite stance. It will not grant patents consisting solely of mathematical
operations, i.e., converting one set of numbers into another set of numbers, does not manipulate
appropriate subject matter and thus cannot constitute a statutory process (United States Patent and
Trademark Office, 2008). This seems very similar to the European system, but there is a key
difference. The US Patent Office will issue a patent for programs with a practical application.

P407 Terrorism
The existing and evolving threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction
Joshua Garrison
11/24/2014
To understand the threat that is posed by weapons of mass destruction (WMD), what defines a WMD
must first be understood. The definition and use of WMD is covered by 18 U.S. Code § 2332a Use of
weapons of mass destruction. The term weapon of mass destruction is defined as any destructive
device that is further defined under section 921. Under section 921, a destructive device is anything
that has explosive, incendiary, or poison gas properties. 18 U.S. Code § 2332a Use of weapons of
mass destruction expands further by defining a WMD as any type of weapon that is designed to cause
death or serious injury by release, dissemination, or impact by nuclear, biological, or chemical means.
The legal code also covers weapons that release dangerous levels of radiation. Under FBI guidelines,
the term WMD is used to describe a collection of modalities that include: chemical, biological,
radiological, nuclear, and explosive and is over referred to as CBRNE.
There are a couple of sayings about terrorism: the first is that terrorism is a weapon of the weak and
that terrorist want a lot of people watching, not dead . If these saying are true, then the threat or risks
of terrorist using a WMD would be fairly low. And with the consequences of a WMD attack being far
reaching, one must remain alert for changes that may signify a WMD attack. In 1999,

Human Impact On The Water Cycle
1. What are the most considerable impacts that you make? Some of the biggest impacts that humans
make on the water cycle are direct, indirect, cumulative, and induced impacts. A direct impact would
be the fact that we rely on the consumption of fresh water for sustenance and maintaining personal
hygiene. An indirect impact would be that our food is grown using chemical inputs, (including natural
chemicals fertilizers), which results in the discharge of chemicals and nutrients that leach into
groundwater, and underground aquifers. A cumulative impact would be the combined impact of our
past, present, and future on the environment. And lastly an induced impact, such as a lake that
increases in toxicity due to a landfill that was created. With this in mind, the most considerable
impacts that I personally make would be; i.) The direct impact from consuming water (retrieved from
a fresh water supply usually sourced from underground aquifers, or natural fresh water springs.) ii.)
The indirect impact from consuming electricity (15% of which is sourced from hydroelectric dams in
the state of California.) iii.) The cumulative impact of the total amount of water that I have used, use
now, and will need to sue in the future. And, iv.) The amount of water depletion from those
underground aquifers and fresh water supplies due to the aforementioned impacts.
2. How might it change your life if you were to reduce your impacts? What would you

The Aztec Human Sacrifices Essay
The Aztec civilization was a very complex society that was feared and known well for their various
gory sacrifices done to please their many gods in their polytheistic religion. The much feared
civilization began by the exile of one of the two Toltec leaders, which lead to the decline of the Toltec
state that was later replaced by Mexica, or the Aztecs. According to the Aztecs, the land chosen to
build their main city was chosen by the portrayal of an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its
mouth. Through military might, the Aztecs managed to become the most powerful civilization in the
mid fourteenth century. They maintained their power through military might and the fear they caused

The selfless act the gods committed led to one of the major reasons for human sacrifices which was
that since the gods gave up their own life for the creation of the new world, that the Aztecs had to
somehow respect and honor their action. They did this by creating an eighteen month calendar, which
dedicated each month to a certain god. The Aztecs used scared and solar calendars to tell time and
when all the possible combinations had been used, usually every fifty two years, the Aztecs would go
through a twelve day period before the cycle started again (Benson 506).
There were many different methods the Aztecs used to sacrifice their victims but most sacrifices
centered on the method of heart extraction. The victims were, thrust onto the stone, where a temple
priest cut through their chest wall with a ritual flint knife, and the heart was, [offered] to the sun for
vitality and nourishment, ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). There was also the act of burning the victim
alive in the sacrificial fire but before they reached death they were taken out and their heart would be
taken out (Callery 33). Victims were not the only ones that were sacrificed; priests also conducted a
method of sacrifice called bloodletting. The priest would begin by punctuating his tongue or any other
body part and then proceeding to letting blood flow out ( Aztec Human Sacrifices ). A torture method
of the Aztecs that might be

Irony In Flannery O Connor s Good Country People
Unlike Alanis Morissette, Flannery O Connor used irony in a much subtler fashion in her work. O
Conner s unique use of literary tools is one reason she is considered one of the best short story authors
of the 20th century (Biography.com ). O Connor s use of irony is especially evident in the short story
Good Country People. Equally important is O Connor s use of clichés. The typical cliché lacks any
substance. Ironically, clichés expressed in Good Country People depict abstract ideas. O Connor s
unique combination of clichés and irony forces readers discern deeper concepts within the text.
However, the readers ability to grasp these concepts hinges on paying close attention to the character

Hopewell s character is restricted to the use of clichés such as that is life and nothing is perfect (O

represent her frame of mind. Mrs. Hopewell implies that she has an optimistic nature and is always
hoping for the best (Kirk 73). Although harmless on the surface, this perspective makes Mrs.
Hopewell blindly optimistic. Throughout the short story, Mrs. Hopewell correlates good country

Pericles And Cicero On Loyalty Essay
Pericles and Cicero on loyalty: a comparison of the Roman and the Greek culture
Pericles and Cicero were two paramount historical and institutional pillars of the classical Greek and
Roman culture. They belonged to different historical contexts. Pericles lived during the Peloponese
war, while Cicero lived during complex times for Rome, including the first and the second
Triumvirate, and Julius Caesar s civil war. Pericles ruled Athens, Cicero became first quaestor in
Sicily and then consul in Rome. Their legacy is immortal through the centuries: Pericles brought
democracy which celebrates in his speech allowing the Athenian démos to participate to the
government, including the less privileged social classes.
Despite Pericles Funeral Oration and On Duties belong to different historical periods, both Pericles
and Cicero share a vision of civilization strictly tied to sound principles regarding the state, the
welfare of the citizens and the men, the preservation of the community through sacred values like
honesty, justice, respect of the private goods and, even more, respect for the common goods.
The two works are different: Pericles Funeral Oration is a panegyric, a celebrative oration typical of
the Greek literature, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Motivated to restore the ancient Roman splendor and the respect of the Republic, he writes a
philosophical and ethical handbook founded on honesty, respect of the law and the state as primary
values of coexistence. In Cicero s and Pericles works the above mentioned values are strictly

Don t You Feel Everyone Should Receive A Fair Trial
Don t you feel everyone should receive a fair trial when being accused of a crime? Well, 19 years ago,
on January 13, 1999, a boy at Woodland High School in Baltimore named Adnan was accused of
manual strangling of a girl named Hae Min Lee. He supposedly told Jay, a buddy of his, that he was
going to kill her. After Hae s missing body was recovered, Jay went to the police and the state used his
testimony against Adnan. Recently, a serial podcast was developed by Sarah Koenig, a detective who

filling the hallways and stairwells of a four story building. Then you have to get out of the school
parking lot, but the parking lot is encircled by the school bus loop, so you can t get your car out until
the buses fill up and leave. Which, Adnan wrote, took about ten to fifteen minutes. Episode 5: Route

quite some time to even find Hae Min Lee and go to her car. With everything he had to do after

Argument Against Conscription In Australia
Conscription was a highly divisive issue in the newly formed country of Australia for multiple
reasons. These include the fact that there were many pros and cons to the issue, two plebiscites had
been rejected by the public and that the public had very split views on the subject (The Australian War
memorial, 2018). It is unlikely that people today will ever be able to come to a conclusion as to
whether or not conscription was a good idea for Australia and its people as the effectiveness of war is
still a highly debated subject in the modern world. It can be hypothesised that conscription was a
highly divisive issue due to Australians split views on the subject.

born on June 28, 1491. He had six siblings but only three of them (Arthur Margaret, and Mary)
survived infancy. At the age of two, Henry was appointed to be the Constable of Dover Castle and

Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. His first marriage, with Catherine of Aragon, lasted almost 24

Calvin Klein eventually dropped the $6 million dollar campaign after the advertisements were accused
of violating child pornography laws. On September 8 the Justice Department began looking into
claims that the ads used young models posed in a provocative manner. A Calvin Klein spokeswoman
stated that only one of the models used in their ads was under the age of 18. The fifteen year old girl
that was in his ads was Bijou Phillips, whose mother was aware of the ad and was proud of her

If the parents of the teen models allowed their children to pose for the advertisements, who are we to

Essay on Metaphors in Master Harold ... and the Boys
18 January 2012
Metaphors in Master Harold ... and the boys Master Harold ... and the boys, is a powerful play written
by Athol Fugard that allows us to analyze the complex relationship between a black man and a young
white boy within the context of racism in South Africa in the 1950 s. This play is characterized by
metaphors used by the author to illustrate the struggle of people dealing with racism. One of the most
important themes of this play is racism, focusing on the injustice in South Africa when the apartheid
system was in place. Racial segregation and separation in this time in history demonstrates to us how
this system allowed unequal rights for whites and blacks. There is evidence that the relationship

The Incentive Plan Lost Adequacy As A Motivational...
In the beginning, the system consistently paid significant incentives. In the long run, this alerted
workers to view the incentives as a major aspect of their normal pay and not as motivating force to
move forward. The incentive plan lost adequacy as a motivational instrument. The employees
mentality is that of Vroom Expectancy Theory, in which motivation is a product of three elements:
valence (how much one wants a reward), expectancy (one s estimate of the profitability that effort will
result in successful performance) and instrumentality (one s estimate that performance will result in
receiving reward) (Newstrom, 2015 p.131 2). When cutbacks occurred, remaining workers became
insecure in their job and influenced their yearning to perform. They did just what was expected of
them to stay employed and nothing additional. Employees were not compensated for seven months
due to low productivity and profitability, which made the employees furious and distrust the plan
(Beer Collins, 2008 p.2). This is adequate evidence that supports McGregor s Theory X and Theory Y.
Despite the fact, that management was fully aware of the employees grievances and the need to
redesign the incentive plan, management does nothing to ratify their complaints. Evidently, Engstrom
management team is not meeting the mental needs of the workers and breaks Newstrom implication of
the unwritten mental contract that workers sign upon employment with the company (Newstrom,
2015, pg. 87 9). As a

that nothing else mattered as long as he made money. When Jews would come up he wouldn t care

Schindler didn t really care for the Jews and what would happen to them. We see that Schindler only

It only leads to the belief that they do not wish to patch things up and stop the violence. They want a
socialist government and the Columbian people want the democratic system that is in place now. I
believe that until the FARC gets what they want, they will not stop their terrorist ways. So how does
the Columbian government accomplish this?
One way to do this is to stop their flow of money. The FARC has admitted to making their money
from the illegal drug industry. If the Columbian government can somehow intercept the drugs before it
leaves the country or intercept the millions of dollars flowing into Columbia from the drug sales, then
the FARC would have a difficult time getting the weapons they need to commit these terrorist acts.
The Columbian government is in the middle of trying to solve these problems and has been since the
Medellín and Cali cartels have been around. Obviously this has not been an easy task.
Since the late 1990 s the United States and the Columbian government have been trying to work out a

medical issues. Many doctors believe Pica to be a derivative of some mental ailment but there are

behavioral strategies are considered the most effected treatment. Multidisciplinary methods with
physicians, psychologists, and social workers are suggested for successful treatment. Some behavioral
strategies include sensory reinforcement, antecedent manipulation, overcorrection, differential
reinforcement of other or incompatible behaviors, self protection devices that prohibit placement of
objects in the mouth, and training in discrimination between edible and nonedible

  • 2. Commercials And Target Buyers Based On Gender For some people its the catchy jingle that catches their attention. For others it may be the famous celebrity that appears on their screen. Some people are even drawn in by the corny catch phrases and over dramatic acting. No matter the case, companies tend to spend billions of dollars in advertising, pursuing customers to buy their must have products, and spending whatever money necessary to get their messages across to those watching. Throughout the years, marketing executives have realized that they must refine their commercials and target buyers based on gender. Advertisements on television have exposed images which are stereotypical representations and somehow have been constructing cultural ideas about gender along the way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The viewer does not know where these women are running towards but soon more and more women appear on the screen; some running in the jungle, some swimming through the ocean, and others climbing a mountain. One might address that through all this activity, these perfectly thin women are still wearing basically nothing on their body and seem to be competing to get somewhere for they are pushing and shoving one another. Then out of no where, there is one average looking, twenty something, man just standing in the middle of the beach, with a look of pure joy, while millions of women are clawing their way to him. This man is simply putting on Axe deodorant and the words Spray More, Get More. The Axe Effect comes up on the screen right before the commercial ends. The ad portrays how the use of this deodorant will make any man irresistible to every woman and to many boys watching the commercial, they probably wouldn t complain if this situation happened to them. Dove however took a different approach in selling their Dove Clinical Protection Deodorant. The commercial opens up with the words what happens when beauty meets strength as the song Pretty Baby by Minnutes happily plays in the background. Cue different videos of women applying the deodorant as they confidently get ready for their day. Phrases such as will take herself on a date today and will run with the guys today begin to appear on the screen. The ad continues to follow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Success Of Cruise Ships Looking at today s mega fleets with their mammoth ships that hold 4,000 or more passengers, it is easy to forget how far the industry has come in these past twenty five years. While cruise ships are now situated around the globe in ports ranging from Europe to Australia, the Americas to Asia, and drawing passengers from the local populaces, it was not always that way. In the 1980s, while most observers believed the industry had the potential for rapid growth, cruising struggled to cast off misconceptions and widen its appeal to the mass market. It was still largely a North American focused business. Pleasure Cruising s Heritage The concept of pleasure cruising, as opposed to point to point transportation by sea, dates back more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The industry, however, got past its fears of new construction and by the early 1980s a second generation of cruise ships was being built. This group began with HAPAG s 30,000 gross ton mv Europa launched in 1981 followed by Carnival Cruise Lines 35,265 gross ton mv Tropicale, Home Lines 35,143 gross ton mv Atlantic and Royal Caribbean s 37,584 gross ton mv Song of America. Yet while the second generation of cruise ships had gotten larger and carried over 1,000 passengers, they remained mostly focused on the Caribbean. There were few exceptions to what was considered the optimal size for a cruise ship, one being the ss Norway. While she was a converted liner as opposed to be new build, at 70,000 gross ton and able to carry 2,000 passengers, she tantalized the industry with the potential for big ships. It would take eight years, but in 1988 Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines responded by introducing the 73,192 gross ton mv Sovereign of the Seas, with a capacity of 2,282, the first new build of this size since the rms Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1968. The industry however was struggling to propel its growth and overcome self inflicted problems including overcapacity. In 1980, there were only about thirty cruise lines and seventy five ships with just around 40,000 berths worldwide. Nevertheless, as the decade progressed the industry s growth started to accelerate so that by 1990 thirty six companies operated 100 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Techniques In Edward Scissorhands Does abnormal people like the way they are hated by the ordinary people? The movie Edward Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton, is about a man named Edward who has hands that are scissors. He was fabricated by the inventor who lived in a mysterious, gloomy castle. The reason why his hands were scissors, was because the inventor died before he replaced it with human hands. That the inventor was dead, Edward was left out and living in the castle all by himself; until, when a local Avon saleswoman, Peg Boggs went into the castle and saw Edward. She felt frightened of his hands at first. However, she realizes that Edward is harmless and lonely so she decides to take him to her home. Once Peg introduced Edward to everyone in Peg s neighborhood, most people got along with him. Edward was also recognized as a talented, trustworthy person once he proved his skills on hedge trimming and hair cutting. However, not everyone accepted him and at last, the whole neighborhood start to reject him. As a result, Edward ends up living back up in the castle, his home. Both of these cinematic techniques leave the audience with meanings which justifies the theme of the movie. Racial stereotyping is still evident today proven by police brutality being justified. Over 20 percent of black unarmed people killed by police are women (Martis 1). • 6. The Meaning Of The Word In English Literature During literature class, where we read narrative that goes from the middle ages to the present, I noted that in many writings, several words appeared constantly in different stories from different authors that nowadays, are less used or uncommon. Including bosom , alas , nay , gay . Where bosom was used to refer to the chest as the seat of emotions. Alas used an exclamation to express sorrow, grief, pity, or concern. These words were commonly used in the Middle English 1225 75. Nay is a denial or refusal that was substituted simply for no . However, the word that had an even more drastic change of its meaning was gay . This project analyzes and investigates how common this word was in the English narrative. A hypothesis will be created of the reasons why its meaning may have changed. An example of its use in literature will be presented through different periods of time with different authors. At the beginning, according to the Oxford dictionary and the website dictionary.com, gay evolved from given to or abounding in social or other pleasures; bright or show; having or showing a merry, lively mood. To , in a certain period of time, changed drastically to mean sexually unrestrained or having loose morals. Turned to be an offensive synonymous for awkward, stupid, bad or lame. So concluded William James in thinking about that most basic of riddles: how did something come from nothing? The question infuriates, James realized, because it demands an explanation while denying the very possibility of explanation. From nothing to being there is no logical bridge, he wrote. In science, explanations are built of cause and effect. But if nothing is truly nothing, it lacks the power to cause. It s not simply that we can t find the right explanation it s that explanation itselffails in the face of nothing. This failure hits us where it hurts. We are a narrative species. The ancient Greeks suggested that empty space is filled with substance a plenum, an ether. Aristotle conceived of the ether as an unchanging fifth element, more perfect and heavenly in its invariance than earth, air, fire, or water. True nothingness was at odds with Aristotle s physics, which said that bodies rise up or fall down as dictated by their rightful place in the natural order of things. Nothingness, however, would be perfectly symmetric it would look the same from every angle rendering absolute spatial directions like up and down utterly meaningless. An ether, Aristotle figured, could serve as a kind of cosmic compass, an ultimate reference frame against which all motion could be measured. For those who abhorred a vacuum, the ether banished every last trace of it. The ancient ether stuck around for millennia until it was re imagined in the late 19th century by physicists like James Clerk Maxwell, who discovered that light behaves as a wave that always travels at a particular speed. What was waving, and speed relative to what? The ether was a handy answer, providing both a medium for light waves to travel through, and, as Aristotle originally imagined, a reference frame against which all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dantes Inferno Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli demonstrated that the different critical exegetical positions, regarding the Divine Comedy (whose intent appears on one side as a disciplinary and moral renewal of the Church, and on the other side as a hidden, heretical reversion) were not free from contemporary pressures. In fact, their own theories are able to offer a valid evidence of the nineteenth century s political and religious debates, and for this reason, I am going to analyse the interpretation of Dante s work by Ugo Foscolo, through both, the Discorso sul testo della Divina Commedia , and two articles that Foscolo published in the Edinburgh Review in 1818; in addition, I am going to analyse the interpretation by Rossetti through his work titled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously, being impossible to summarize the vast, esoteric, exegesis of Dante proposed by them, I am feeling obliged to try to highlight some common key of readings as, for example: 1) the relation between the symbol of the Cross (representing the Roman Church) and the Eagle (representing the Empire), whose doctrines are linked to mankind s need for salvation. These two institutions (Church and Empire), according Dante s thought, had to be both settled at the centre of Rome, as at the time of the Holy Roman Empire. In addition, according to Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, Dante attacked the Church exclusively because he wanted the renewal of the spiritual dimension, where the Church had to abandon its material interests, leaving exclusively to the Empire the task to unify Peoples under a unique government. In this way, both Church and Empire would have been able to help humankind for their spiritual and material ends. 2) Another common key of reading, for Foscolo, Rossetti and Valli, is linked with the symbol of Beatrice, which is seen by the three interpreters, not as a real woman, but as a symbol of the wisdom, present in many ancient traditions. 3) I will try to highlight the fact that the esoteric reading of Dante, is considered by both, Foscolo and Rossetti in key heterodox, neo Pythagorean and Ghibelline, while it is considered by Valli in super catholic key. In brief, in my thesis, I will try to find all common passages of Dante s oeuvre, used by Foscolo,Rossetti and Valli, analysing and comparing them in a more rigorous possible ... Cathy is a prostitute who killed her parents and left her husband, Adam, to take care of their children, Caleb and Aron. Adam stuck around with the twins, but he was there for them mentally leaving them with their housekeeper Lee. This caused the boys to endure the pain of having parents not around for them during their childhood. Zoos give an opportunity for city kids or people to see wild animals. A zoo is a place where animals live in and are put on display for people to view. Zoos travel back to as early as 2500 B.C., when nobility started to collect exotic animals. In Europe, sixteenth century, when early explorers traveled to the New World, they brought home all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures like anteaters and sloths (Sunquist). The first modern zoo, opened in Vienna in 1765, but it was not until the mid to late 1800s that zoos started to become more common. The idea of displaying wild animals to the public in the park was instantly appealing to the rising middle class of the Victorian era (Sunquist). Though some may believe zoos are an unsafe environment for animals, most zoos have benefited animals by educating the public, contributing to the conservation of animals by developing breeding programs or other conservation oriented programs, and also bringing them into a safe environment. Some critics may argue that Zoos are a harmful and inhumane method of commercializing animals. While this may be true, zoos also are very beneficial not just to animals but to humans because they bring communities together and foster an appreciation of animals. This exposure motivates and educates people into protecting the animals. Rebecca Madden, a time staff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Impact Of Sports On Sports And Leisure Activities Section A Introduction Despite it being 2015, there are still many ongoing barriers which are preventing many people of all ages, races, genders and social backgrounds from participating in sports and leisure activities. Economically, some sports are just completely unviable to people from certain backgrounds. Sports such as Polo are completely exclusive to a certain class of people, due to the mass expenses required to get you started. Inner city families, some of whom may have a member of the household unemployed would never be able to foot the cost of the bills to play Polo. Along with the unfeasibility of the costs of certain sports, people are also being excluded from sport due to the social side of the spectrum. Many sports are perceived as having gender ties and many children are brought up to identify that a certain sport shouldn t be played by boys as it is a girls sport and vice versa. This leads to a massive social stigma that is developed during the formative years of schooling that influences children s decisions on what sports they decide to play. It can also be tied into many cases of Homophobia in schools, where many homophobic slurs may be attached to a girl who enjoys rugby, or a boy who enjoys gymnastics. Due to the low number of combination between the sexes in many sports as children, this leads to a deficiency of integration as adults, therefore making it more difficult to get involved in a sport as an adult, due to the sport being either male ... They have a central nervous system that consists of 2 to 6 ventral nerve cords and subepideral nerve net also known as cephalization. Cephalization is more advanced because the system now has more neurons, sense cells, larger ganglia compared to the simple nerve net system. According to Inoue, planarians will release chemotaxis as a response when they are exposed to chemical. In this case, planarians will operate the chemoreceptors to identify the location of the food. Procedurally generated art can produce works that mimic a drawing, painting or photograph, but there is a complication in defining the work as an algorithm or a creative work. Copyright does not extend to algorithms, so the questions follows: Is procedurally generated art simply an algorithm that should be treated as such, or is it a creative work that should be covered by copyright law? Strangely, the United States takes the opposite stance. It will not grant patents consisting solely of mathematical operations, i.e., converting one set of numbers into another set of numbers, does not manipulate appropriate subject matter and thus cannot constitute a statutory process (United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2008). P407 Terrorism The existing and evolving threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction Joshua Garrison 11/24/2014 To understand the threat that is posed by weapons of mass destruction (WMD), what defines a WMD must first be understood. The definition and use of WMD is covered by 18 U.S. Code § 2332a Use of weapons of mass destruction. The term weapon of mass destruction is defined as any destructive device that is further defined under section 921. Under section 921, a destructive device is anything that has explosive, incendiary, or poison gas properties. 18 U.S. Code § 2332a Use of weapons of mass destruction expands further by defining a WMD as any type of weapon that is designed to cause death or serious injury by release, dissemination, or impact by nuclear, biological, or chemical means. The legal code also covers weapons that release dangerous levels of radiation. Under FBI guidelines, the term WMD is used to describe a collection of modalities that include: chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive and is over referred to as CBRNE. There are a couple of sayings about terrorism: the first is that terrorism is a weapon of the weak and that terrorist want a lot of people watching, not dead . Some of the biggest impacts that humans make on the water cycle are direct, indirect, cumulative, and induced impacts. A direct impact would be the fact that we rely on the consumption of fresh water for sustenance and maintaining personal hygiene. An indirect impact would be that our food is grown using chemical inputs, (including natural chemicals fertilizers), which results in the discharge of chemicals and nutrients that leach into groundwater, and underground aquifers. A cumulative impact would be the combined impact of our past, present, and future on the environment. And lastly an induced impact, such as a lake that increases in toxicity due to a landfill that was created. With this in mind, the most considerable impacts that I personally make would be; i.) The direct impact from consuming water (retrieved from a fresh water supply usually sourced from underground aquifers, or natural fresh water springs.) ii.) The indirect impact from consuming electricity (15% of which is sourced from hydroelectric dams in the state of California.) iii.) The cumulative impact of the total amount of water that I have used, use now, and will need to sue in the future. And, iv.) The Aztecs used scared and solar calendars to tell time and when all the possible combinations had been used, usually every fifty two years, the Aztecs would go through a twelve day period before the cycle started again (Benson 506). This play is characterized by metaphors used by the author to illustrate the struggle of people dealing with racism. One of the most important themes of this play is racism, focusing on the injustice in South Africa when the apartheid system was in place. • 33. The Incentive Plan Lost Adequacy As A Motivational... In the beginning, the system consistently paid significant incentives. In the long run, this alerted workers to view the incentives as a major aspect of their normal pay and not as motivating force to move forward. The incentive plan lost adequacy as a motivational instrument. The employees mentality is that of Vroom Expectancy Theory, in which motivation is a product of three elements: valence (how much one wants a reward), expectancy (one s estimate of the profitability that effort will result in successful performance) and instrumentality (one s estimate that performance will result in receiving reward) (Newstrom, 2015 p.131 2). When cutbacks occurred, remaining workers became insecure in their job and influenced their yearning to perform. They did just what was expected of them to stay employed and nothing additional. Employees were not compensated for seven months due to low productivity and profitability, which made the employees furious and distrust the plan (Beer Collins, 2008 p.2). This is adequate evidence that supports McGregor s Theory X and Theory Y. Despite the fact, that management was fully aware of the employees grievances and the need to redesign the incentive plan, management does nothing to ratify their complaints. Evidently, Engstrom management team is not meeting the mental needs of the workers and breaks Newstrom implication of the unwritten mental contract that workers sign upon employment with the company (Newstrom, 2015, pg. 87 9).
