Why do we
share literature
with kids?
Professors Providing Professional Development Channel
Because…it is fun
• http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED496343.pdf
– According to Nell (1988), reading for pleasure is a form
of play that allows us to experience other worlds and
roles in our imagination.
– Reading enjoyment is more important for children’s
educational success than their family’s socio-economic
status. (Krashen, 1999)
– According to Alvermann (2001, p. 680) ,“the possibility
that as a culture we are making struggling readers out
of some adolescents who for any number of reasons
have turned their backs on a version of literacy called
school literacy is a sobering thought”.
• Becoming a lifetime reader is predicated on developing a love of
reading (Sanacore, 2002).
What the research says about reading for
pleasure…
Because it aids in the acquisition of language
and language development

• According to Benton & Fox (1985, p. 15): stories provide the possibility
of educating the feelings and can offer their readers potential growth
points for the development of a more subtle awareness of human
behaviour.

make-you-more-empathetic

It supports lifelong readers
• READING AUTOBIOGRAPHICALLY
It supports lifelong readers
• READING FOR VICARIOUS EXPERIENCES
It supports lifelong readers
http://www.gailgiles.com/Why_Teen_Need_Edgy_Fiction.html
• READING FOR PHILOSOPHICAL SPECULATION
It supports lifelong readers
• READING FOR AESTHETIC EXPERIENCES
It supports lifelong readers
• To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which
gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety,
ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.
• (A. C. Grayling)
Because it develops the imagination
Because it can transmit culture
