Ethics and Social Media Research: Examining Private Lives on a Public StageVanessa Dennen
Dr. Vanessa Dennen discussed key ethical issues in conducting social media research. She explained how concepts like privacy exist on a continuum and are influenced by audience and intent. Researchers must consider whether participants see them as part of the intended audience and if they would feel at risk with a larger audience. The biggest concerns should be avoiding harm to participants and gaining proper consent rather than just IRB approval. Mitigation strategies like using pseudonyms, checking quotes, and reporting aggregate findings can help reduce risks. Researchers have a responsibility to respect participants' privacy, educate them and the IRB, and uphold high ethical standards.

The presentation reviewed several popular social media sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter and provided examples of how libraries have used these tools.
This document discusses the need for libraries to adapt to changing times and new technologies. It notes symptoms of dysfunction in some libraries and challenges them to be "future ready" by embracing change. It discusses how libraries can redefine their purpose and focus on experiences over books. The document advocates for libraries to build knowledge portals focused on user questions and needs. It also suggests focusing on content quality rather than format, expanding social media programs, and collaborating rather than just socializing. The overall message is that libraries must respect generations, put the end user first, and measure their impact and value to remain relevant institutions.
This document summarizes a presentation by Stephen Abram on how libraries can prepare for the future. The presentation discusses how libraries need to shift their focus to the questions and needs of end users by building knowledge portals focused on popular topics. It also emphasizes the importance of high quality content over physical formats like books, expanding social media programs, advocacy, and measuring impact and value through analytics. The key message is that libraries must change and align themselves with what patrons want in order to remain relevant in a digital world.
The document discusses trends for libraries beyond technology. It notes symptoms of dysfunction in some libraries and argues that libraries must change to remain relevant. Some key points are that libraries should focus on the user experience and answering users' questions, build knowledge portals around common inquiries, and tell stories about their impact to advocate for themselves. Libraries must also focus on quality over format and expand social media programs on information literacy. The future of libraries depends on understanding users, measuring impact, and collaborating instead of just socializing.
A basic introduction to social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. This presentation was delivered to Coos County Library District staff at the Coos Bay Public Library in December 2009.
This document summarizes Stephen Abram's presentation on the future of libraries, books, and knowledge. Some of the key points discussed include the evolution of books into "frankenbooks" that integrate various media like video and audio, the importance of focusing library services on user questions rather than books/collections, and building knowledge portals focused on common questions in areas like health, careers, genealogy and homework help. Abram also emphasizes the value of social media programs, advocacy, analytics and collaboration over traditional library services.
This document summarizes Stephen Abram's presentation on social institutions and the social web. In 3 sentences: Abram discusses how libraries can leverage social tools like web 2.0 to better engage patrons and focus on questions rather than books/transactions; he advocates building knowledge portals around common questions and emphasizing quality content over quantity; and recommends that libraries measure impact and value through strategic analytics to demonstrate their continued relevance in a digital age.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
