White Fang By Jack London
I recently read the book White Fang by Jack London. The story is a work of realistic fiction and it
tells the story of a wolf as he grows up from a pup. It is a story of maturing and how life affects you
as you grow. It tells of the strife something must experience as it grows in the wild. This story is
considered a classic among many people and it is written in the traditional style.
This story takes place in the Yukon Territory in Canada for the most part, but later moves to the
Santa Clara Valley in California. The main character moves from place to place throughout the story
as he changes to different masters. This story is told in third person omniscient. There is some
dialogue in the story, but there are few human characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The story starts by telling the struggle of two men named Bill and Henry as they try to travel
through the Yukon. The men are followed by a pack of wolves that is led by Kiche, who later
becomes White Fang's mother. The pack kills off the men's dogs and Bill, leaving Henry to be found
by another group of travelers. The story then shifts to follow the wolf pack. Kiche, being the only
female in the wolf pack, is fought over, and One Eye wins her in the end. Kiche gives birth to a litter
of pups, but only one survives in the end. That one pup is White Fang. The story then follows him as
he grows up. He by accident encounters a group of Native American men, and they claim White
Fang and Kiche. He continues to grow up in the Indian village. One day, Kiche is taken by another
man, and White Fang is left behind. He fights with another pup named Lip–lip from the beginning,
but now that his mother is gone, he must fend for himself. When winter comes around, he goes out
for a while only to return to nothing. The village is gone and it takes him many days to find it again.
Grey Beaver, White Fang's owner, takes his dogs to travel up the Mackenzie River where they arrive
to a small settlement. Grey Beaver sells his goods here, and in the process, White Fang catches the
eye of a man called Beauty Smith. Beauty Smith begins to give Grey Beaver whiskey, and tells Grey
Beaver that if he wants more, he must give him White Fang. Grey Beaver agrees to do so,

Jack London was a classical writer of the (early 1900s?) known for his adventurous writing style
and his skill with the pen. He is known for stories such as: "The Sea–Wolf" (1904), "White Fang"
(1906), "The Call of the Wild" (1903), and numerous short stories. These are only the after effects of
a great and adventurous life. He frequented life as a sailor, a writer, an inspirational speaker, a
tramp, a "boy socialist", a prospector, a father, a best–selling author, an "oyster pirate", a factory
worker, and a poor odd–job worker. Needless to say Jack London's impoverished and adventurous
life greatly influenced his outlook upon the world and his early writing.
Jack London was born to William Chaney and Flora Wellman. Chaney, London's biological father,
left when he learned that Flora was going to have a child because he rejected being a father, and died
close to 1903 when Jack was becoming famous for "The Call of the Wild." Flora then married John

Jack did his fair share in helping support the family by sweeping saloons, setting up bowling pins,
delivering newspapers and several other odd jobs. He worked these odd jobs till well after he
graduated from eighth–grade grammar school at age fourteen, and for some time before he
graduated he knew that his meager earnings were an important part of the family's income. As time
went on he had to go and work at "Hickmott's [pickle] cannery on Myrtle Street in West Oakland"
(Jack London and His Times, page thirty–six) at age fifteen. His work hours were "Form seven in
the morning until noon and from one until six in the afternoon, he stood at a machine, endlessly
repeating the same operations." (Jack London and His Times, page thirty–seven). The minimum he
worked was a ten hour day, and pressed for money for his family he often worked overtime. He
often worked as many as eighteen to twenty hours, and once worked for thirty–six never–ending

Domesticated Dog In The Call Of The Wild By Jack London
Have you ever seen a dog act like a wild animal? In the book The Call of the Wild by Jack London,
a domesticated dog named Buck is kidnapped and sold to people in the Yukon. The people and other
dogs teach him the law of the club and fang. Buck retrogressed and learned that only the fittest
survive. Eventually Buck turned into a animal who couldn't be tamed and eventually joined a wolf
pack.
After Buck got off the narwhal, he learned a very important lesson about fighting. Soon after the
Narwhal dropped Francois, Perrault, and the dog sled team off, Curly tried to socialize. The dog she
picked was very unfriendly and attacked her. ".... only a leap in like a flash, a metallic clip of teeth a

Jack London's works presents him as a wise, valiant, and adventurous person, who tried to achieve
his goals. It happened that it was his youth experiences that inspired his literary works––– his
adventure in life. John Griffit London was a name he was originally born with on January 12,
1876, in San Francisco, California, and the name Jack London was a pen name he had adopted later
on during the early days of his writing career. Due to certain financial struggles he dropped out of
the university and went to Alaska, the Klondike region of Canada, with his sister's husband, Captain
Shepherd, in search of gold–a time widely known as the "Alaska Gold Rush". His experience in that
region contributed in inspiring him on ideas which led to his creation on literary works. They were
ideas that grew his vision for the world from the realm of literature. I believe these ideas also
created a passion within him for more travel to different regions of the world, ... Show more content

Clearly from Jack London's viewpoint as someone who had worked on many variety of laborer's
jobs such as a factory worker, pirate, sailor, gold prospector, etc., it shows that his background
experience of many labor jobs can be related also to Stephen in Aloha Oe, who happened to have
many job descriptions like the entertainer, surf instructor, etc. Jack London could in some ways have
been inspired on his life experiences to write on the character of Stephen in "Aloha Oe". Based on
the inspiration he got from his travel to Alaska, the Klondiak region and what transpired, it became a
passion for him to always seek adventures (discovering and visiting places for holidays). This
eventually led to his many travels to Hawaii, especially with his second wife

Jack London, an American author known for his thrilling adventure stories, showed the world that
even an exciting story that takes place in exotic settings can include all the intricacies of great
literature. This is seen in many of his stories with the implementation of symbolism, many times a
recurring theme in his work. Also, London used many ideas of the day such as Darwinism and
Spencerism in his writings in order to better portray his views. However, perhaps one of the most
telling signs that London wrote good literature was through London's mastery of a rising literary
movement known as naturalism. As seen in multitude of London's works, symbolism plays a major
role in his writings. One of London's greatest works of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "To Build a Fire," a mysterious man, referred to as "the man" (Rhodes 1) in many literary
critiques, must survive a hump over the frozen tundra of the Klondike, and with him he takes his
husky. The two characters act as foils to each other, each experiencing the same situations as the
other, but it is their responses to the situations that show the difference between the two. For
example, both the husky and the man break through the ice and got their paws/feet wet: "Suddenly it
(the husky) broke through the water that clung to it turned to ice" (London 500) and then later "
the man broke through (the ice)" (London 501–502). It is the husky, however, that proved more
adept to coping with the freezing climate of the North, especially after having gotten wet in a
freezing creek. Because of this innate ability of the husky, he survived the ordeal whereas the man
died of hypothermia after his fire, which was meant to dry out his foot, was snuffed out by the
Northern snow. "It was as though he had heard his own sentence of death. For a moment he sat there
and stared at the spot where the fire had been" (London 503). It is this symbol of survival that is
perhaps the most characteristic and recurring theme in London's writings, known as Spencerism.
Many ideas of the late 19th century and early 20th century are apparent in London's writing, chief
among them being his belief in Spencerism. This was an idea created by

Soon after his new fame, Jack London went to the

the trip within a two year time. "He was constantly sick
with Uremia and was warned to alter his diet and

My author was Jack London. Jack London is known for his books that have the constant theme of
survival. His books "Sea Wolf" and "White Fang" both use the theme of survival but they use it very
differently . In "Sea Wolf" London tells the story of Humphrey Van Weyden an upper class citizen
whose boat crashed and he was rescued by a passing seal hunting ship, the ghost, run by captain
Larsen. (page 10.) While Weyden thought this was his saving grace he quickly realized that he was
not going to be allowed to leave and that he was now in the position of cabin boy. (page 23.)
Weyden is very poorly treated throughout his stay on especially by the cook. The sailors soon try to

Jack London was an individual uniquely concerned with man's relationship to nature; he felt there
was a lack of vitality in modern human life that came from humanity's desire to keep itself
comfortable at the expense of their ability to accept their own animal selves. To that end, London
attempted to explore this idea of naturalism within his works and writings – his essays and stories
focused chiefly on the folly of men who attempted to control nature the same way they controlled
their society, only to be met with disaster. "To Build a Fire" demonstrates the fundamental elements
of naturalism as specified through the principles of Jack London.
Naturalism is a style of writing that emphasizes the indifference of nature to man, and was
developed, at least in part, by Jack London in his essay "What Life Means to Me." London had a
dim view of the rich and cultured, as they were furthest away from the immediacy of nature: "I
found many that were clean and noble; but with rare exceptions, they were not alive" (London). At
the same time, among those who lived among the land London found "warm faith in the human,
glowing idealism, sweetnesses of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dog, a creature much more naturally attuned to the principles of nature and its aspects, is more
tied to its instinct than the man. The dog is loyal and patient, going with the man through all of his
bad ideas out of loyalty. The dog is much more prepared for the environment than the man, with his
impeccable sense of smell and greater resistance to the colder weather. The dog even knows when to
give up and seek help; fter the man dies, dog goes "in the direction of the camp it knew, where were
the other food–providers and fire–providers" (London). This shows the dog's greater practicality
when it comes to instinct and focus than the man, being the preferable option for naturalism in

Darwinism And Survival In White Fang, By Jack London
White Fang, written by Jack London, is a wonderful adventure novel that vividly depicts the life of a
wolf by the name of White Fang. Throughout the course of the novel, White Fang goes through
numerous learning experiences as he interacts with humans and other wolves from Alaska around
the turn of the century. Jack London uses the events that transpire during White Fang's life to
illustrate that only the cunning, intelligent, and strong will be able to survive. The ideas of
Darwinism and survival are reinforced by almost every action that takes place in the novel. Man is
shown defeating nature through superior intelligence, a wolf cub conquers his puppy–hood, and a
young wolf survives despite the hardships placed upon him by man.

He comprehends the 'eat or be eaten'; structure of animal society and knows that he must eat and
avoid being eaten to guarantee his survival.
This concept of survival is reinforced as White Fang has his first encounter with man. His first
instinct is to attack when he sees his half–wolf half–dog mother recaptured by Indians, and he acts
on this instinct. The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup
fighting against gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to
keep his life. All of his actions are predicated on the need to live.
White Fang spends the majority of his early life in retreat, but this quickly changes. He soon grows
into a savage and voluminous beast as a direct result of his persecution and mistreatment by human
and dog alike. The concept of eat or be eaten has been so perfectly been ingrained into his system,
that he loses any speck of compassion or kindness that was ever in him and becomes a terrible
killing machine. Whenever he sees he has the advantage over another living thing, he exploits it and
drops the creature dead in its tracks.
White Fang's reign of terror, however, only lasts until he encounters a stronger and more formidable
foe. Weedon Scott, a mining expert during the gold rush, narrowly saves him from the jaws of a
pitbull and teaches him one final lesson. This is that

Jack London is a novelist, journalist, social activist and he wrote a incredible quote. "I would rather
be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet."
This quote means that he would rather be a person that does stuff and takes risks than a boring
person that does nothing and lives long. This statement relates to extreme sports because extreme
sports is about risk taking and not sitting around doing nothing with your life. If there was
something between superb meteor and the planet I would be that because there's a limit of how
many risks you can take before you die. Risks can help you get through life by getting a good job or

John Griffith London, better known to us as Jack London, was born to Flora Wellman January 12,
1876, in San Francisco. (Ranch Album) His father was presumably W.H. Chaney, who left Flora
after finding out she was pregnant. (Stasz, 9) Flora met and eventually married John London on
September 7, 1876 bringing John's two other children, Ida and Eliza, into the family. (Ranch Album)
Flora enlisted the help of a wet nurse and, with the help her and Eliza, Jack London was raised. For
the next ten years, John and his family relocated several times within California, moving from farm
to farm trying to become financially successful. (Marshall) Finally, the London family moved to

After a year, he returned not rich, but ill with scurvy from malnutrition. (Stasz, 78) He also found
that his father had died and resolved to support his mother solely from writing. His experiences in
the Yukon lead to what are called his Northland stories. My three stories, "To Build a Fire," "The
League of the Old Men," and "Love of Life" as well as the better known novels The Call of the Wild
and White Fang are all part of the Northland stories.
Jack London's loves were not restricted to Mother Nature; Jack had been married, carried on affairs,
and had at least two children, Joan and Bess. He became an extremely prolific writer during these
times, writing as much as nineteen hours a day– for this, he also gained a bit of wealth. Looking for
a new challenge, and an excuse to get away from his wife Bessie, London traveled to England to
write The People of the Abyss, a novel detailing the slums of London. (Stasz, 108) After its
completion, he toured Europe and finally returned home to separate from Bessie. (Marshall) He then
became a correspondent for the San Francisco Examiner and traveled to the Far East to cover the
Russo–Japanese War.
Upon his return, Jack took his new love, Charmian Kittredge to California, bought a ranch in Glen
Ellen, and married her. (Marshall) The next few years

Jack London Figurative Language
The first few chapters of White Fang were very detailed because Jack London used great figurative
language and had good choice of words to describe he's setting. The book states "Dark spruce forest
frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their
white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean toward each other, black and ominous, in the fading
light" (London 1) which is a great example of Jack London being really detailed. Also these first
few chapters had a lot of figurative language and metaphors. Having figurative language and
metaphors in a story are really important because it can keep the reader interested in the book and
you can keep the reader thinking. An example of figurative language ... Show more content on

For example, "The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the
spirit of it was not even that of sadness" (London 1). This quote is an example of how he is very
detailed and how he describes what kind of setting his characters are in because he describes how
desolate and quiet the forest is; which also gives us an idea and a feel for how the setting is in the
book. Being detailed about the setting helps the reader because the reader would know where the
characters are at and the time the story takes place in; also being detailed in the setting is important
because if the reader doesn't know what a forest is it kind of gives them a feel of what a forest is
like. The book also states, "The unrest of the dogs had been increasing, and they stampeded, in a
surge of sudden fear, to the near side of the fire, cringing and crawling about the legs of the men. In
the scramble one of the dogs had yelped with pain and fright as the smell of its singed coat
possessed the air" (London 7). This quote is another example of why being really detailed is
important because it adds more intensity to action scenes so it gets the reader at the edge of their
sits. It's important to have the reader at the edge of their sits so the author can keep the reader
interested into the book and keep their minds thinking of what might happen next. These are some
reasons why Jack London is very detailed in these first few

Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London
The short story, "To Build a Fire," written by Jack London took place on the Yukon trail. Further
analysis led to the discovery that the story took place in Alaska. The setting became an important
aspect within this story due to how much description was given to how cold it was. The cold
weather suggests that the time of year was during the winter months. The setting of the story
reminds readers that there are harsh places in the world, where nature becomes overwhelmingly
powerful.
The short story starts off with a Man on a mission. His mission is to get to Henderson Creek by six

He seems to not have "common sense," to say the least. At the start of the story it is only reasonable
that common sense would have been used to not make the trip at all or atleast listen to those, the old
timer, who have more experience than he does. However, his ignorance to the dangers of the
extreme cold eventually led straight to his death. His actions throughout the short story were not
given any thought process prior. Therefore, each obstacle he built himself or came across re–
established his lack of experience with nature that is more powerful than him.
The dog within the short story relied on his natural instincts, which were the best reactions when
considering the setting of the story. Overall, the dog was loyal throughout the story for staying by
the Man's side even when he was wrong. He stayed with him even when the Man tried to kill him
for his own selfishness. The dog has an instinctive understanding of the dangers that come with
traveling in harsh weather, unlike the Man. His intelligence and instinct is what kept the dog alive,
and one can infer that when the Man died, the dog went to find the camp of boys.
Minor characters in the short story include the old timer and the boys. The old timer gives advice at
Sulpher creek to the Man; that he should not travel alone in such cold weather. It is noticeable that
the old timer is an experienced older man. The wise old timer proved to be right toward the end of
the short story, when the Man

"Love of Life" is a story about a man abandoned in the Yukon by his partner Bill after he sprained

A good writer's depiction of setting positions the reader right into the story. In "To Build a Fire" by
Jack London, the setting plays a significant role throughout the entire short story. London uses
certain techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting,
prepares them for a tone that is depressed and frightening. Isolated by the hostile environment of the
Yukon in sub–freeing temperatures, a man falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of
nature, London shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his

stands on a bank of the Yukon about to plunge into an almost absolute wilderness, he has little or no
understanding either of his immense isolation relative to his surroundings or of the extreme danger
posed by the cold snap. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph,
"The mysterious, far–reaching hair–line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold,
and the strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man." Thus, the man also
knows, in addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does
not know the meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its
ability to kill. "Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That
there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head." During his
journey, the man gets his feet wet as he falls through the ice into the water of a hot spring. Because
of the severity of the cold, the man's life depends upon his ability to adapt to his surroundings. After
one, half–successful fire–starting endeavor, and several other pitiful attempts, the hopelessness of

In the beginning, Judge Scott did not trust or care for White Fang much until he saved the judge
from Jim Hall, who attempted to harm him after escaping from prison. Yet, after this, the judge

The beginning of the novel is about two men, Bill and Henry, traveling in the Yukon. They get
attacked by a group of wolves, lead by a she wolf. While Henry survives, Bill ends up being eaten
by the wolves. After Henry is saved, the story then focuses on the wolves rather than people. After
the pack eats and splits up, it continues on with only three wolves, the she wolf, One Eye, and two
others. One Eye battles with them in order to win the she wolf as a mate, and he succeeds. They
travel as mates and come along an Indian camp where they are able to steal meat from snares. Soon,
she the she wolf is able to find a cave and give birth. Unfortunately, One Eye is killed by a lynx, and
a famin takes place. Due to this, only one pup is able to survive, White Fang. He almost did not

AAnalysis of Jack London Novels
A literary Analysis of Jack London three most recognized works, Sea Wolf; The Call of the Wild;
and White Fang.
Jack London lived a full life, even though he died at the young age of forty. In his life time he
experienced many things, and I believe that these experiences were the catalyst of his novels. Jack
London was an oyster pirate, a government patrolman in San Francisco Bay, a sailor and an agrarian
reformer, a seal hunter in the North Pacific and a gold prospector in the frozen Klondike, a war
correspondent and a prizefighting reporter, a socialist soapbox orator who later became a lecturer at
universities, a family man and landowner, and of course a true American writer. A critic by the name
of Alfred Kazin once said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the success of The Call of the Wild, London decided to write a complementary work–the
story of a dog taken out of the wild to become part of civilization.
Thus, White Fang was created. White Fang is about wolf who's mother goes into a tribe of Indians
because food is scarce. The cub ( White Fang) is taken in by a tribe but at the same time rejected by
his mother. This is the first step in his hard upbringing. He is not friend to all of the other Indian
dogs and even the Indians. He leaves camp with his master. He is sold to a new owner. This new
owner is mean to the dog and does not let him live a desired life. This new owner makes white fang
a fighting dog. The wolf is the champ of the region until he fights a small bull dog. "White Fang tore
wildly around, trying to shake off the bulldog's body" (p. 167)He almost dies but the fight is broken
up and white fang is rescued by a good man by the name of Weedon Scott. White Fang loves his
new master and this is the first time he has experienced love for anything. Scott eventually has to go
home to California and is about to leave White Fang. "White Fang was howling as dogs howl when
their masters lie dead" (p. 186) White Fang did not want this to happen so he ran as fast as possible
to the ferry and just made it. Scott goes back to California and White Fang lives there happily ever

Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London
Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire," tells of a man who decides upon traveling in the acutely
cold and unforgiving Yukon environment alone to regroup with his friends at a distant camp. Along
the trip, the man walks across a hot spring which he perceives to be safe and breaks through the ice
instantly getting his feet wet. The man knows what he must do to stay alive in such a situation, to
build a fire, the only challenge is keeping the fire alive in such horrid conditions. The man tries
desperately to cling onto life as he is attempting to start a fire, however his multiple attempts all fail
and leave him in a desperate panicked state vulnerable to nature's firm grasp pulling him closer to an
untimely death. He fights with every bit of power available as the fire plan proved no worth in such
extreme situations, becoming so desperate as to attempt killing his own dog to warm himself with its
carcass. After many attempts at preserving his life the man finally "grows calm and decides to meet
death with dignity." This eerily human story may leave some readers uncomfortable as it conveys
such a brief but close up view of death. Some questions that may remain are, why was this story
written? What was the mindset behind it? And, how accurate is this depiction for the time?

the Yukon territory during a cold winter with frigid temperatures that were measured in excess of

The Sea Wolf by Jack London
1
The Themes of "The Sea Wolf" "The Sea Wolf" by Jack London can often be seen as a controversial
book. It mentions several highly disputed topics such as: morals, religion, and death. Throughout his
life the aim and strategy that he used for his books often reflected his past life experiences. His once
hard life enabled him to gather extraordinary details into his books that authors were often not
privileged to use. The characters one encounters through the various novels, and especially "The Sea
Wolf" are also based off real people that London had met throughout his life. These themes as
displayed in the storyline express the hardships of life during the 1800s and on. They portray what
people had to do to not only simply get by, but to survive. Jack London's story of his life is an
indeed interesting one; going from an average boy with thoughts of various adventures to one of the
most influential writers in the United States. Jack London was born as Griffith Chaney on January
12, 1876, in San Francisco, CA. Jack was the son of a unmarried woman, Flora Wellman and
William Chaney who was an attorney, journalist and active in the field of astrology. Throughout his
childhood his father was never involved with his life. Which contributes to the fact that many of his
books revolve around surviving when death seems certain, or one working hard for himself. When
Jack was still a young boy, his mother married John London, who was a Civil War veteran. He

The Sea Wolf By Jack London
In Jack London's book, The Sea Wolf, the reader has been given a very interesting view on what
would be a minority in the society of the time. The book takes place on a sealing ship in the Pacific
Ocean in the early 20th century. The sailors on these sealing vessels were a brutal group of men.
They were frequently getting into fights with one another and behaving in a beastly manner. One
would wonder though, whether or not the men are actually animals. The rest of the civilized world,
at this point in time, did not behave in this beastly behavior. Perhaps, the beastly or primeval
behavior is in all people and the ability to contain or smother it is what makes them human. Then
would that it possible that some men are animals and others are not? For it would seem, that in this
novel, that some men can control their primeval side and others cannot. Also it may be possible that
one's own self can either evolve or devolve out of or into the primeval state due to the pressure of
his environment. Are men animals? This question can be a hard subject to approach today because
many people have many different beliefs and experiences that would lead to them to one idea or the
other. In the novel, however, there seems to be a leaning towards the idea that men are animals or
rather that men can become animals. It is early in the novel that we get the description of a man
looking like something of an animal. It happens when Humphrey Van Weyden, otherwise known as
Hump, sees Wolf

Jack London Women
The novel, The Call of the Wild, by Jack London is a story about a team of sled dogs during the
1850's Gold Rush. At that time, many men traveled to the Yukon Territory to see if they could strike
it rich. Most women, who had husbands taking part in the gold rush, remained at home with their
families. The few who came along, however, may have proved too frail for the task, or at least that's
how London describes it. Every female in the book dies tragically, as a ramification of their negative
attributes. Jack London portrays his female characters as having weak traits as compared with the
male characters in his story.
The first female husky mentioned in the story is named Curly. The name 'Curly' itself denotes
frivolous feminine qualities. She dies tragically when she tries to befriend one of the other huskies.
The story tells us, "There was no warning, only a leap like a flash, a metallic clip of teeth, a leap out
equally swift, and Curly's face was ripped open from eye to jaw," (13). When she conveys her
amiable nature, her attacker sees this as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

way, but she did not move. After they had traveled three miles they unloaded the sled, came back for

male owners, and none of them are presented this way to us. London provides the reader with a clear

her self–centered nature, while the men demonstrate inner strength and

3. The short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London starts off with a man who travels to the Yukon,
a major river in Alaska and western Canada, on an extremely cold winter day with a wolf dog. The
man was a newcomer in the Yukon and this winter was going to be his first. The man is planning to
meet a group of his friends at a camp by six o'clock. He plans on traveling alone with his wolf dog
because he states that he is not fazed by the cold. An older timer on Sulphur Creek warns the man to
not go into the wilder of Yukon on his own, but he refuses to listen and lets his ego get the best of
him. So the man sets forth his journey with his dog and no other companion. As the days goes on

However, as soon as he thinks that he is safe and thinks that the old–timer did not know what he was
talking about, the fire is tarnished by the snow that fell from the spruce tree. Because the man did
not consider looking around and observing his surroundings, he builds the fire under a spruce tree,
which he immediately regrets after he finds out. This mistake might have caused the man his life.
Now that the fire had went out due to the snow, the man's hands and feet were uncovered and he
knew that if he does not start another fire he will lose them. Trying to start another fire as soon as
possible the man realizes that he cannot feel his hands. In frustration and fear the man thinks that he
should kill the dog and put his hands in his body to warm them up in order to start the fire. He does
not go through with it and tries to run as far as he can get, but falls numerous times before realizing
he is going to die. The man realizes that the old timer was right and only hoped that his friends
might find his body in the morning. He then fall off into, what seems to him, a comfortable and
satisfying sleep. As soon as the dog smells the man's scent, he runs to the

Analysis Of White Fang By Jack London
The American novel, White Fang, was written by the American author Jack London. This book is an
adventurous fiction novel set in the Yukon Territories. This book was written as a sequel to another
one of London's classics, Call of The Wild. This book shows the importance of nature and how
difficult it could be to survive. The book also shows how violent and ferocious not only animals, but
humans can be too.
The central setting of this novel affects the story greatly. This story takes place in the Yukon
Territories, which it is generally very cold there. The climate varies, and is very harsh to the people
that live there. Food is scarce in the Yukon Territories, and there's not much vegetation. The Yukon
Territories are mostly made up of mountains and high plateaus. More towards the end of the story,
White Fang and his master, Weedon Scott, end up in California. They live on a farm, where White
Fang has plenty of room to run. California is located on the West coast of California. In California, it
is usually warm year round. This book is told in third person omniscient, which means that the story
is told from multiple point of view. This story is told mainly from White Fang's point of view, but
the story also touches upon a few other points of view. The central setting and point of view affect

The Naturalistic Ideals of Jack London Essay
The Naturalistic Ideals of Jack London As an adolescent, Jack London led an impoverished life and
struggled to earn more money to support himself and his mother. In an attempt to find a small
fortune, London joined the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897. Unfortunately, he returned home penniless.
However, his adventures in the Yukon provided him the most epic experiences that guided him into
writing some of his most famous, widely acclaimed literary works. His novels focus primarily on
naturalism, a type of literature in which the characters are shaped by their environment through the
practice of scientific principles. The author centralizes his themes around this literary technique.

Through his vivid writing style, London captures the spirit of the wilderness and that "life was a
struggle for survival... the 'fittest' would come out on top" (Napierkowski and Stanley). Again, this
philosophy is the result of Buck's destiny shaped by a force beyond his control. He is heavily
influenced by his pack leader's incessant teasing and desire for a fight. Through these conflicts,
Buck evolves into the most savage, fearless animal that roams the winter nights. London sees
Darwinism as "a law of life" (Berkove) and Buck has certainly accomplished it. He successfully
achieves the status of alpha dog by later killing the pack leader and proving himself to be the
"fittest". Although this process is very difficult, London manages to evoke a brighter side to the
situation. Buck's struggle for survival produces a new personality fit for the environment of the
Yukon, thus completing his transformation. However, there is a fine line between the struggle for
survival for a human and an animal. In his story "To Build a Fire", Jack London reveals the
teamwork required from both the man and the dog in order to conquer the ruthlessly cold winter. "To
Build a Fire" centers on a man trekking out into the below zero temperatures of the Yukon with his
dog companion and ultimately succumbs to the unrelenting force of nature. The man puts his best
battle with the wild but to no avail.

Literary Analysis Of White Fang By Jack London
White Fang by Jack London is a breathtaking example of classical composition. This piece of
fictionalized American literature has shown, in the simplest way possible, the struggles of a wild
made tame wolf as he is thrown in and out of captivity. Mr. London's novel has shown, in vivid
detail, how a good natured cub like White Fang turned into a raging beast. He hated his own species
and humans because of the cruel treatment he had received, but by the end White Fang was able to
learn what trust and loyalty truly meant. This tale has become an important part of literary history
because of it's tantalizing plot that keeps you riveted. You'll be rooting for White Fang from the very
beginning of the book.

Mackenzie Indian settlement where he first meets man. He stays with them for a quarter of his life,

he learns to be solitary and how to fend for himself; he doesn't need anyone else to survive in the

White Fang By Jack London

  • 1. White Fang By Jack London I recently read the book White Fang by Jack London. The story is a work of realistic fiction and it tells the story of a wolf as he grows up from a pup. It is a story of maturing and how life affects you as you grow. It tells of the strife something must experience as it grows in the wild. This story is considered a classic among many people and it is written in the traditional style. This story takes place in the Yukon Territory in Canada for the most part, but later moves to the Santa Clara Valley in California. The main character moves from place to place throughout the story as he changes to different masters. This story is told in third person omniscient. There is some dialogue in the story, but there are few human characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The story starts by telling the struggle of two men named Bill and Henry as they try to travel through the Yukon. The men are followed by a pack of wolves that is led by Kiche, who later becomes White Fang's mother. The pack kills off the men's dogs and Bill, leaving Henry to be found by another group of travelers. The story then shifts to follow the wolf pack. Kiche, being the only female in the wolf pack, is fought over, and One Eye wins her in the end. Kiche gives birth to a litter of pups, but only one survives in the end. That one pup is White Fang. The story then follows him as he grows up. He by accident encounters a group of Native American men, and they claim White Fang and Kiche. He continues to grow up in the Indian village. One day, Kiche is taken by another man, and White Fang is left behind. He fights with another pup named Lip–lip from the beginning, but now that his mother is gone, he must fend for himself. When winter comes around, he goes out for a while only to return to nothing. The village is gone and it takes him many days to find it again. Grey Beaver, White Fang's owner, takes his dogs to travel up the Mackenzie River where they arrive to a small settlement. Grey Beaver sells his goods here, and in the process, White Fang catches the eye of a man called Beauty Smith. Beauty Smith begins to give Grey Beaver whiskey, and tells Grey Beaver that if he wants more, he must give him White Fang. Grey Beaver agrees to do so, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Jack London Accomplishments Jack London was a classical writer of the (early 1900s?) known for his adventurous writing style and his skill with the pen. He is known for stories such as: "The Sea–Wolf" (1904), "White Fang" (1906), "The Call of the Wild" (1903), and numerous short stories. These are only the after effects of a great and adventurous life. He frequented life as a sailor, a writer, an inspirational speaker, a tramp, a "boy socialist", a prospector, a father, a best–selling author, an "oyster pirate", a factory worker, and a poor odd–job worker. Needless to say Jack London's impoverished and adventurous life greatly influenced his outlook upon the world and his early writing. Jack London was born to William Chaney and Flora Wellman. Chaney, London's biological father, left when he learned that Flora was going to have a child because he rejected being a father, and died close to 1903 when Jack was becoming famous for "The Call of the Wild." Flora then married John London ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jack did his fair share in helping support the family by sweeping saloons, setting up bowling pins, delivering newspapers and several other odd jobs. He worked these odd jobs till well after he graduated from eighth–grade grammar school at age fourteen, and for some time before he graduated he knew that his meager earnings were an important part of the family's income. As time went on he had to go and work at "Hickmott's [pickle] cannery on Myrtle Street in West Oakland" (Jack London and His Times, page thirty–six) at age fifteen. His work hours were "Form seven in the morning until noon and from one until six in the afternoon, he stood at a machine, endlessly repeating the same operations." (Jack London and His Times, page thirty–seven). The minimum he worked was a ten hour day, and pressed for money for his family he often worked overtime. In the book The Call of the Wild by Jack London, a domesticated dog named Buck is kidnapped and sold to people in the Yukon. The people and other dogs teach him the law of the club and fang. Buck retrogressed and learned that only the fittest survive. Eventually Buck turned into a animal who couldn't be tamed and eventually joined a wolf pack. After Buck got off the narwhal, he learned a very important lesson about fighting. Soon after the Narwhal dropped Francois, Perrault, and the dog sled team off, Curly tried to socialize. • 7. Jack London Accomplishments Jack London's works presents him as a wise, valiant, and adventurous person, who tried to achieve his goals. It happened that it was his youth experiences that inspired his literary works––– his adventure in life. John Griffit London was a name he was originally born with on January 12, 1876, in San Francisco, California, and the name Jack London was a pen name he had adopted later on during the early days of his writing career. Due to certain financial struggles he dropped out of the university and went to Alaska, the Klondike region of Canada, with his sister's husband, Captain Shepherd, in search of gold–a time widely known as the "Alaska Gold Rush". His experience in that region contributed in inspiring him on ideas which led to his creation on literary works. They were ideas that grew his vision for the world from the realm of literature. I believe these ideas also created a passion within him for more travel to different regions of the world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clearly from Jack London's viewpoint as someone who had worked on many variety of laborer's jobs such as a factory worker, pirate, sailor, gold prospector, etc., it shows that his background experience of many labor jobs can be related also to Stephen in Aloha Oe, who happened to have many job descriptions like the entertainer, surf instructor, etc. Jack London could in some ways have been inspired on his life experiences to write on the character of Stephen in "Aloha Oe". Based on the inspiration he got from his travel to Alaska, the Klondiak region and what transpired, it became a passion for him to always seek adventures (discovering and visiting places for holidays). • 9. Jack London Essay Jack London, an American author known for his thrilling adventure stories, showed the world that even an exciting story that takes place in exotic settings can include all the intricacies of great literature. This is seen in many of his stories with the implementation of symbolism, many times a recurring theme in his work. Also, London used many ideas of the day such as Darwinism and Spencerism in his writings in order to better portray his views. However, perhaps one of the most telling signs that London wrote good literature was through London's mastery of a rising literary movement known as naturalism. As seen in multitude of London's works, symbolism plays a major role in his writings. One of London's greatest works of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In "To Build a Fire," a mysterious man, referred to as "the man" (Rhodes 1) in many literary critiques, must survive a hump over the frozen tundra of the Klondike, and with him he takes his husky. The two characters act as foils to each other, each experiencing the same situations as the other, but it is their responses to the situations that show the difference between the two. For example, both the husky and the man break through the ice and got their paws/feet wet: "Suddenly it (the husky) broke through the water that clung to it turned to ice" (London 500) and then later " the man broke through (the ice)" (London 501–502). It is the husky, however, that proved more adept to coping with the freezing climate of the North, especially after having gotten wet in a freezing creek. Because of this innate ability of the husky, he survived the ordeal whereas the man died of hypothermia after his fire, which was meant to dry out his foot, was snuffed out by the Northern snow. "It was as though he had heard his own sentence of death. For a moment he sat there and stared at the spot where the fire had been" (London 503). It is this symbol of survival that is perhaps the most characteristic and recurring theme in London's writings, known as Spencerism. Many ideas of the late 19th century and early 20th century are apparent in London's writing, chief among them being his belief in Spencerism. This was an idea created by ... The Call Of Jack London Essay example The Call Of Jack London During a time when man had gold fever, and philosophical views plagued the minds of many, one man took these views and turned them into great outdoor adventures. John "Jack" Griffith London, a twentieth century author, wrote The Call of the Wild, other novels, and short stories that depict the philosophical views of the time and added adventure to them by using his own life experiences that carried thousands of men including himself to the Klondike in search of gold. • 12. Soon after his new fame, Jack London went to the Russo–Japanese War as a correspondent for The San Francisco Examiner. Upon his return to the USA he was sued for divorce. The day after the divorce was final Jack London remarried a woman by the name of Charmain Kittredge. The two of them set forth on a voyage around the world. The crew and Jack became vary sick and were forced to abandon the trip within a two year time. "He was constantly sick with Uremia and was warned to alter his diet and habits."(McCracken 372) "On the morning of November 22, 1916, he was found unconscious and died that evening."(McCracken 372) Uremic poisoning was ruled the cause of his death, however a note pad on his night stand had a calculation of the amount of morphine it would take to kill a man, and on the floor were empty viles of that such drug.(Kunitz and Haycraft 844) "Like his autobiographical hero Martin Eden, he had taken refuge in suicide."(Kunitz and Haycraft 845) The second half of the nineteenth century called American fiction writers to turn to Europe and France for inspiration. • 14. Jack London Research Paper My author was Jack London. Jack London is known for his books that have the constant theme of survival. His books "Sea Wolf" and "White Fang" both use the theme of survival but they use it very differently . In "Sea Wolf" London tells the story of Humphrey Van Weyden an upper class citizen whose boat crashed and he was rescued by a passing seal hunting ship, the ghost, run by captain Larsen. (page 10.) While Weyden thought this was his saving grace he quickly realized that he was not going to be allowed to leave and that he was now in the position of cabin boy. (page 23.) Weyden is very poorly treated throughout his stay on especially by the cook. The sailors soon try to stage a mutiny on the ship but when this fails the captains treatment ... • 20. Darwinism And Survival In White Fang, By Jack London White Fang, written by Jack London, is a wonderful adventure novel that vividly depicts the life of a wolf by the name of White Fang. Throughout the course of the novel, White Fang goes through numerous learning experiences as he interacts with humans and other wolves from Alaska around the turn of the century. Jack London uses the events that transpire during White Fang's life to illustrate that only the cunning, intelligent, and strong will be able to survive. The ideas of Darwinism and survival are reinforced by almost every action that takes place in the novel. This concept of survival is reinforced as White Fang has his first encounter with man. The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup fighting against gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to keep his life. All of his actions are predicated on the need to live. White Fang spends the majority of his early life in retreat, but this quickly changes. He soon grows into a savage and voluminous beast as a direct result of his persecution and mistreatment by human and dog alike. The concept of eat or be eaten has been so perfectly been ingrained into his system, that he loses any speck of compassion or kindness that was ever in him and becomes a terrible killing machine. Whenever he sees he has the advantage over another living thing, he exploits it and drops the creature dead in its tracks. "I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet." This statement relates to extreme sports because extreme sports is about risk taking and not sitting around doing nothing with your life. The dog has an instinctive understanding of the dangers that come with traveling in harsh weather, unlike the Man. His intelligence and instinct is what kept the dog alive, and one can infer that when the Man died, the dog went to find the camp of boys. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph, "The mysterious, far–reaching hair–line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man." Thus, the man also knows, in addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does not know the meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its ability to kill. Analysis Of To Build A Fire By Jack London Jack London's short story "To Build a Fire," tells of a man who decides upon traveling in the acutely cold and unforgiving Yukon environment alone to regroup with his friends at a distant camp. Along the trip, the man walks across a hot spring which he perceives to be safe and breaks through the ice instantly getting his feet wet. The man knows what he must do to stay alive in such a situation, to build a fire, the only challenge is keeping the fire alive in such horrid conditions. The man tries desperately to cling onto life as he is attempting to start a fire, however his multiple attempts all fail and leave him in a desperate panicked state vulnerable to nature's firm grasp pulling him closer to an untimely death. He fights with every bit of power available as the fire plan proved no worth in such extreme situations, becoming so desperate as to attempt killing his own dog to warm himself with its carcass. After many attempts at preserving his life the man finally "grows calm and decides to meet death with dignity." This eerily human story may leave some readers uncomfortable as it conveys such a brief but close up view of death. Some questions that may remain are, why was this story written? • 56. The Sea Wolf By Jack London In Jack London's book, The Sea Wolf, the reader has been given a very interesting view on what would be a minority in the society of the time. The book takes place on a sealing ship in the Pacific Ocean in the early 20th century. The sailors on these sealing vessels were a brutal group of men. They were frequently getting into fights with one another and behaving in a beastly manner. One would wonder though, whether or not the men are actually animals. The rest of the civilized world, at this point in time, did not behave in this beastly behavior. Perhaps, the beastly or primeval behavior is in all people and the ability to contain or smother it is what makes them human. Then would that it possible that some men are animals and others are not? For it would seem, that in this novel, that some men can control their primeval side and others cannot. Also it may be possible that one's own self can either evolve or devolve out of or into the primeval state due to the pressure of his environment. Are men animals? This question can be a hard subject to approach today because many people have many different beliefs and experiences that would lead to them to one idea or the other. In the novel, however, there seems to be a leaning towards the idea that men are animals or rather that men can become animals. It is early in the novel that we get the description of a man looking like something of an animal. It happens when Humphrey Van Weyden, otherwise known as Hump, sees Wolf ... At that time, many men traveled to the Yukon Territory to see if they could strike it rich. Most women, who had husbands taking part in the gold rush, remained at home with their families. The few who came along, however, may have proved too frail for the task, or at least that's how London describes it. Every female in the book dies tragically, as a ramification of their negative attributes. Jack London portrays his female characters as having weak traits as compared with the male characters in his story. The first female husky mentioned in the story is named Curly. The name 'Curly' itself denotes frivolous feminine qualities. She dies tragically when she tries to befriend one of the other huskies. The story tells us, "There was no warning, only a leap like a flash, a metallic clip of teeth, a leap out equally swift, and Curly's face was ripped open from eye to jaw," (13). In total, the pack has two different sets of male owners, and none of them are presented this way to us. Through his vivid writing style, London captures the spirit of the wilderness and that "life was a struggle for survival... the 'fittest' would come out on top" (Napierkowski and Stanley). Again, this philosophy is the result of Buck's destiny shaped by a force beyond his control. He is heavily influenced by his pack leader's incessant teasing and desire for a fight. Through these conflicts, Buck evolves into the most savage, fearless animal that roams the winter nights. London sees Darwinism as "a law of life" (Berkove) and Buck has certainly accomplished it. He successfully achieves the status of alpha dog by later killing the pack leader and proving himself to be the "fittest". Although this process is very difficult, London manages to evoke a brighter side to the situation. Buck's struggle for survival produces a new personality fit for the environment of the Yukon, thus completing his transformation. However, there is a fine line between the struggle for survival for a human and an animal. In his story "To Build a Fire", Jack London reveals the teamwork required from both the man and the dog in order to conquer the ruthlessly cold winter. "To Build a Fire" centers on a man trekking out into the below zero temperatures of the Yukon with his dog companion and ultimately succumbs to the unrelenting force of nature.
