When The Dark Glass Clears
Momentarily
Intro: 1Cor 13:12
12) For now we see through a glass, darkly; but
then face to face: now I know in part; but then
shall I know even as also I am known.
Text: Isa 6
1) In the year that king Uzziah died
I saw also the Lord
sitting upon a throne,
high and lifted up,
and his train filled the temple.
2) Above it stood the seraphims:
2. 2
each one had six wings;
with twain he covered his face,
and with twain he covered his feet,
and with twain he did fly.
3) And one cried unto another,
and said,
Holy, holy, holy,
is the LORD of hosts:
the whole earth is full of his glory.
4) And the posts of the door moved
at the voice of him that cried,
and the house was filled
with smoke.
5) Then said I,
Woe is me!
for I am undone;
because I am a man of unclean lips,
and I dwell in the midst
of a people of unclean lips:
for mine eyes have seen the King,
the LORD of hosts.
6) Then flew one of the seraphims
3. 3
unto me,
having a live coal in his hand,
which he had taken
with the tongs from
off the altar:
7) And he laid it upon my mouth,
and said,
Lo, this hath touched thy lips;
and thine iniquity
is taken away,
and thy sin purged.
8) Also
I heard the voice of the Lord,
saying,
Whom shall I send,
and who will go for us?
Then said I,
Here am I;
send me.
9) And he said,
Go,
and tell this people,
4. 4
Hear ye indeed,
but understand not;
and see ye indeed,
but perceive not.
10) Make the heart of this people fat,
and make their ears heavy,
and shut their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart,
and convert,
and be healed.
11) Then said I,
Lord, how long?
And he answered,
Until the cities be wasted
without inhabitant,
and the houses without man,
and the land
be utterly desolate,
12) And the LORD have removed men
far away,
5. 5
and there be a great forsaking
in the midst of the land.
13) But yet
in it shall be a tenth,
and it shall return,
and shall be eaten:
as a teil tree,
and as an oak,
whose substance is in them,
when they cast their leaves:
so the holy seed
shall be the substance thereof.
I. Something to see.
6. 6
A. The conqueror v1
Isa 6:1
In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord
sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train
filled the temple.
Isa 6:3
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is
the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
The “Lord” is used to introduce a threat. Deity acting
as the supreme earthly ruler.
Isa 1:24
Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty
One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and
avenge me of mine enemies:
Isa 3:1
For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take
away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the
staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of
water,
7. 7
Isa 10:16
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among
his fat ones leanness; and underhis glory he shall kindle a
burning like the burningof a fire.
Isa 10:33
Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the
bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shallbe
hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.
Isa 19:4
And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a
cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the
Lord, the LORD of hosts.
Exod23:17
Three times in the year all thy males shall appearbefore
the Lord GOD.
Exod34:23
Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear
before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.
8. 8
B. The court v2
Isa 6:2
Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings;
with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered
his feet, and with twain he did fly.
The majesty of heavens throne-room is no doubt
breath-taking, but after a short description no more
attention is given to the setting.
As if the seraphims sense the prophet’s curiosity begin
to wonder, they break into a soul stirring anthem,
that would make Handel join the unemployment line.
9. 9
II. Something to hear.
A. The chorus v3
Isa 6:3
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is
the LORD of hosts:the whole earth is full of his glory.
Num14:20-21
20 And the LORD said, I have pardonedaccording to thy
word: 21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled
with the glory of the LORD.
10. 10
Hab 2:14
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the
glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
The wickedness of the world around Isaiah, had
blinded and dulled his ability to comprehend, the
seraphims song as an immediate reality.
B. The call v8
Isa 6:8
Also I heard the voiceof the Lord, saying, Whom shall
I send, and who will go for us? …
Gen 3:8
And they heard the voiceof the LORD God walking in
the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife
hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God
amongst the trees of the garden.
1Kgs 22:20
11. 11
And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he
may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said on this
manner, and anothersaid on that manner.
1Kgs 22:22
And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I
will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of
all his prophets. And he said, Thou shaltpersuade him,
and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
III. Something to say.
A. Commitment v8
12. 12
Isa 6:8
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I
send, and who will go for us? Then saidI, Here am I;
send me.
The voice of God is intended to motivate a man to
participation; not to quinch his insatiablethirst for
entertainment.
1Sam3:9-10
9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it
shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD;
for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in
his place.
10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other
times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak;
for thy servant heareth.
Matt 4:20
And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
Acts20:24
But none of these things move me, neither count I my
life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course
13. 13
with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the
Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
B. Condemnation v9-12
Isa 6:9-12
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people,Hear ye indeed,
but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this peoplefat, and make their ears
heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears, and understandwith their heart,
and convert, and be healed.
11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until
the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses
without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
12 And the LORD have removed men far away, and
therebe a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
Isa 65:1-7
1 I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found
of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me,
unto a nation that was not calledby my name.
14. 14
2 I have spread out my hands all the day unto a
rebelliouspeople, which walketh in a way that was not
good, after their own thoughts;
3 A peoplethat provoketh me to anger continuallyto my
face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burnethincense upon
altars of brick;
4 Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the
monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of
abominable thingsis in their vessels;
5 Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for
I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a
fire that burneth all the day.
6 Behold,it is written before me: I will not keep silence,
but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom,
7 Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers
together, saiththe LORD, which have burned incense
upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills:
therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
Jer20:8-9
8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and
spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a
reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.
15. 15
9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak
any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart
as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary
with forbearing, and I could not stay.
IV. Something remains v13.
Isa 6:13
But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall
be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is
in them, when they cast their leaves:so the holy seed
shall be the substancethereof.
Isa 37:31
And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah
shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:
16. 16
John15:1-3
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh
away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth
it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have
spoken unto you.
