Keeping empathy alive: New media and storytelling on disastersSanjana Hattotuwa
Keeping empathy alive: New media and storytelling on disasters looks at how the media can frame stories on disasters, and use new media to get information on them.
The video based on a slide presentation for a class on Virtual Economy about the current state of emerging communication technologies and their impact on economy.
How social media changed people's perspectiveiamclaii
Virtual worlds and social media allow people to connect from afar but can also lead to disconnect from real relationships and a distorted sense of reality. Experts warn that overuse of technology risks substituting virtual interactions for real human connection and encourages exaggerating one's life through selective sharing, as people curate idealized online personas. Maintaining a balance between virtual and real worlds is important to avoid losing a sense of self and priorities.
This document discusses the digital revolution and the impact of the internet and digital media. It covers:
- The different types of media that have emerged like digital news media, social media, and print media.
- How the internet allows for bidirectional exchange of information and has provided benefits like access to information but also disadvantages like increased interruptions.
- How digital media has impacted generations, leading to a drop in reading printed words and fragmentation of attention spans. It has also changed industries like newspapers and libraries.
- The transition from separate devices to integrated technologies like smartphones and how digital media has changed how we live and share information through social media and sites like Wikipedia and YouTube.
- New issues that have
This was presented to a group of senior citizens from Westmoreland County, Pa. at Redstone Highlands Senior Living Communities. They wanted to know more about social media so I started with the basics: Facebook and Twitter.
Gavin Vitter presented on reconnecting humanity through handwritten notes. He argues that as communication becomes more dehumanized through technology like social media and email, handwritten notes take on greater value as they represent a sacrifice of time and thoughtful expression. Handwritten notes acknowledge the sender and express appreciation to the receiver on a basic human level that technology cannot replicate. Vitter also discusses how gathering information used to be a shared social experience but is now often isolated and alone on screens.
The document discusses the concept of the "global village" proposed by Marshall McLuhan and how the internet has impacted this idea. Specifically, it notes that the internet reduces the barrier of physical distance, expands social spheres through the openness of the web, and allows for rapid spreading of global news through enhanced online communication. This forces increased global involvement according to McLuhan's perspective.
This document discusses the information revolution and how information is now shared between individuals and communities in new ways. It notes how media has become a community where people can openly share and participate through new technologies that allow information to be shared from one person to one person, one person to many people, and many people to many people.

Monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems for National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes are essential for countries to track, assess and learn from their progress on adaptation. MEL systems can help countries to understand the effectiveness of their NAP processes, support mutual accountability and transparency to stakeholders, and contribute to learning to accelerate adaptation actions.

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC CharlotteCori Faklaris
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.
