A student trustee serves as a non-voting member on their community college district's board of trustees. Their primary responsibilities include attending executive meetings for their college's Associated Student Government and relaying student issues to the board. California law and RSCCD board policy outline the role, requiring student trustees to be enrolled in a minimum number of units and attend board meetings, except for closed sessions. As a full board member, they can participate in discussions, receive materials, and make motions to advocate for students and influence decisions of the board.
2. Primary Responsiblities
• Attend ONE ASGSAC Executive meeting a month
• Attend ONE ASGSCC Executive meeting a month
• Attend ONE ASGSAC and ASGSCC general council
meeting (if applicable) a month to relay current
issues within RSCCD
• Be the liasion between the RSCCD Board of
Trustees and the ASG(SCC)(SAC)
• Follow the California Education Code pertaining
to Student Trustees
• Follow the Board Policy on Student Trustees
3. California Educational Code Says:
• Section 72023.5
• Include a student member, not limited to one, on the local BOT as a non
voting member(S)
• Students have the right to attend every meeting except for executive
sessions of the governing board (IE: closed session)
• Must attend that community college district
• Student member is recognized as a full member of the board
• Student must be enrolled in 5 semester units in that community college
district
• One year term starting June 1st of that year
• Student is not liable for any acts of the governing board, because their
vote is only advisory
• Student can make and second motions at the discretion of the governing
board
• Receive compensation at the discretion of the board

• Maintain (6) semester units versus (5) throughout the term
• Seated with the Board and recognized as a full member
• Entitled to all materials other Board members receive, except close
session materials

• Bound by Code of Ethics/Standard of Practice (Board Policy 2715)
• Make and second motions
• Term commences on May 15th
• Can serve on Board committees

• Advised to talk to previous Student Trustees and current
Trustees, as well as the Chancellor
• Minimum of (5) semester units
• REQUEST for an open mind, desire to learn, represent the
district, great interest in the Board, and the time to devote
to being a Trustee
• Once again, can attend all meetings except for closed
sessions, be seated with the board, participate in
discussion, receive same materials as other board members
(except closed session), mileage reimbursement to the
same extent as other Board members

Responsibilites
