Examples Of Archetype In The Odyssey
The character archetype, the creature of nightmare, is showcased numerous times between both
novels, The Odyssey and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, respectively. Polyphemus, the
cyclops and giant son of Poseidon, which is featured in the ninth chapter of Homer s, The Odyessey,
and the giant squid, featured in the eighteenth chapter of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,
are just two examples of the character archetype, the creature of nightmare.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus, who is the main protagonist of the novel, and his shipmates meet
Polyphemus after docking on the island of the cyclopes. Odysseus s curiosity wandered him and
his men right into the cyclopes cave. Later, that same night, the cyclopes, Polyphemus, walks into
his cave and pushes a slab in front of the door so no one can come in (or out) of ... Show more

Frightened by the large creature, Odysseus and his men scatter to the shadows of the cave before
the large beast notices them. Directly after finishing his work, Polyphemus starts to poke at the
fire in his cave, which was previously set by Odysseus and his shipmates. Once the fire flares up,
Polyphemus notices Odysseus within the shadows, and without hesitation the gigantic creature
questions who they men are, as well as where they re from. This is when Odysseus begins
speaking to the aforementioned creature, claiming his name to be Nohbdy, that he and his men are
from Troy, and that their ship had crashed among the rocks of the island. After mentioning that his
ship was broken up on the rocks, the mighty man picks up two of Odysseus s men, bashes their
heads in, then eats them whole, and goes to sleep. In the following morning, the cyclopes eats
another two of Odysseus s men. When the creature finally exits the cave, Odysseus looks to his

The Life of Aretha Louise Franklin
Aretha Louise Franklin also known as the Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942 in
Memphis Tennessee. She is known for being a solo singer, and also a very talented pianist. Soul,
R B, Jazz, and Gospel are genres that she sings. Throughout her career she signed with Colombia
Records and has released many popular singles that would now be considered classical. Aretha
became the first female artist to be introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. Up until this
day Aretha is still alive living at age seventy two and has won many Grammy awards and
considered one of the most honored artist. Aretha was born into a family that attended church,
her father who was a Baptist preacher and gospel singer parents. She was the fourth of five
children, and lost her mother from a heart attack, four years after her parents had gotten
divorced. Aretha was then moved with her dad and siblings to Michigan where they attended a
church named, Detroit s New Baptists. Her father was recognized as a preacher and her talent
was starting to peek out when she would sing at her Father s congregation. She was mostly self
taught herself and was known to be a child prodigy, with a nice voice and a gifted pianist. A few
days after Franklin had just turned just fifteen years old, she gave birth to her oldest son,
Clerence. Two years later her second child was born, whom she named Edward. The father of
Clerence and Edward was never known, because Aretha never revealed the man s identity. Both of

At 10:00 we got on our plane to head to Fort Myers, Florida. The plane ride was long and tiring,
and on the plane I was sitting next to a very nice lady while I was doing my homework.
Do you need to turn on the lights? she asked.
No I m okay, I replied. Thank you though. We went on with the rest of our plane ride. Before
landing our pilot did a little overview of the ocean and Florida, even though we couldn t see, the
lights from Florida looked amazing! When we got off the plane and everyone was tired at 2:00 in
the morning and we got our rental car and headed off to the hotel. Of course we jumped in bed when
we got there and slept until morning.
The first day in Florida was really exciting for me because I ve never been there and it was a first
time experience with Florida. We went to go get breakfastand I saw the lady that was on the plane
with me there! After breakfast we decided to meet up with family that stayed in Florida and we
went to some shops and explored around the city. The weather in Florida was kind of chilly that
day so we didn t get to do much. After that we went to go eat, then went back to the hotel. At the
hotel we all decided to go out to the pool. We put on our swimming suits and headed downstairs
to the nice outdoor pool. After a while we went inside and watched Netflix on our phones while
some of us slept. The next day was kind of a random day. We drove

Bramson Group Home Analysis
PG 245
1. The opening and closing paragraphs of the essay make the issue more personal. Bramson
connects the readers to these children, their community and the people in their lives that make it
possible for them to live close to normal lives. He then shifts the responsibility from the caretakers
that are going to get old, frail and fragile to the communities that have the means to help these
people when family members no longer can. The last paragraph gives them a real person, an
example they cannot imagine away a real life boy that could be helped by a group home.
Bramson also gives the reader a happy, positive idea to reflect on instead of all the negative beliefs
they have about these homes and people.

The Island Of Doctor Moreau
Benjamin Rush once stated that freedom can exist only in the society of knowledge. Without
learning, men are incapable of knowing their rights (Rush and Runes N.p). Throughout time,
ethically controversial sciences, from vivisection to stem cell research, have embodied a negative
stereotype in the eyes of western societies, and have consequently withdrew the freedom that
allows scientists to make innovative discoveries. In H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau,
this perspective is portrayed through Edward Prendick, an upper class English gentleman with a
subtle passion for science. After being stranded on a remote pacific island isolated from
civilization, Prendick s perspective on Dr. Moreau s unethical and controversial studies begins to
transform over time. The idea that isolation from civilization can result in the freedom to explore
one s curiosities is portrayed through Prendick s initial unacceptance of Moreau s vivisection,
which, as time on the island elapses, reshapes to one of interest. In The Island of Doctor Moreau,
as Edward Prendick spends more time away from civilized society, his perspective regarding Dr.
Moreau s ethically controversial discipline, vivisection, begins to shift from a sense of repugnance
to one of enthusiasm. Through these perspectives, H.G. Wells argues that Prendick s isolation from
civilization is the principle force allowing him to freely embrace the unethical studies on the island
and explore his natural curiosity for science,

Essay about Ray Charles
Ray Charles
Ray Charles was a revolutionary pianist and a soul singer who helped shape the sound of rhythm
and blues. He brought a soulful sound to everything from country music to pop standards to God
Bless America. His birth name was Ray Charles Robinson, but he shortened it when he entered
show business to avoid confusion with the famous boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. I chose Ray Charles
as the topic for my paper after seeing the movie Ray. After viewing this film I realized that there
was a lot of interesting information about Ray Charles that I had never heard about. Therefore, the
focus of my paper is to learn who Ray Charles really was and to discuss his life and achievements.

During this time he started recording and achieved his first hit song in 1951. The song was
titled Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand. When Charles first began singing many felt as though his
sound and piano playing resembled those of Nat King Cole and Charles Brown. Ray was quoted
saying, When I started to sing like myself as opposed to imitating Nat Cole, which I had done for
a while when I started singing like Ray Charles, it had this spiritual and churchy, this religious or
gospel sound. It had this holiness and preachy tone to it. It was very controversial. I got a lot of
criticism for it. (San Jose Mercury News, 1994) Charles soon became more innovative when he
realized that his first recordings were only skillful imitations of his heroes. After joining Atlantic
Records, Charles s sound became more and more original and found breaking. He took many
tunes from gospel music and put them to secular lyrics performed in front of a jazz lineup playing
R B with exceptionally tight arrangements. He sometimes even added a country music feel to
some of his arrangements for example in his version of Hank Snow s I m Moving On.
The Middle Years Do it right or don t do it at all. That comes from my mom. If there s something
I want to do, I m one of those people that won t be satisfied until I get it done. If I m trying to sing
something and I can t get it, I m going to keep at it until I get it where I want it.

OL BA298 Week 4 Best Buy Case Study Homework Assignment; By Jeffrey Ray Jackson Sr. 09/03
/2016. Through the course of the history of Best Buy as a firm, during and over the years,
managerial changes have occurred, having being infrequent (meanings, rare, as uncommon, not

Why did managerial have any succession or failure(s) have little impact? It seems to me; little

Grief Counseling Essay
Grief counseling is a division of social work that involves the interpersonal aspect of the social
worker s role as expert in coping with death. In this paper I will define grief counseling and some
ways to cope with loss. Next I will discuss the history and seven stages of grief. There are two
main forms of grievers which are intuitive and instrumental. In addition there are four major types
of grief which are acute, anticipatory, sudden and complicated. The helping process is explained
as well as some disorders related to grief. A current trend for grievers is to seek involvement in
programs such as the Canadian Cancer Society, Missing Children of Canada and Victim Services.

People going through grief often feel disorganized and have difficulty eating, sleeping or
concentrating. Grief counselors ease the expression of emotion and thought about the loss and
give insight to their feelings (Doka 1996). There are numerous reactions to grief, both good and
bad. Behaviors that deal with grief positively are through art, writing, support groups or
celebrations of the loved one. Some negative ways to deal with grief include feelings of anger,
frustration, helplessness, depression and withdrawal from family and friends. A common yet
self destructive way to cope with loss is by turning to substances such as alcohol or drugs. This
also requires counselors in order to help them get to the root of their problems. Sigmund Freud
was an influential psychoanalyst in the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He made
many advances in the field of psychology which have impacted other academic areas such as
sociology and social work. In his 1915 paper Mourning and Melancholia he connected the normal
realm with the pathological. In which he compared mourning a normal if painful event from
which hardly anyone is spared with a pathological although very common one: melancholia
(Fiorini et al. 2007). The natural human process is to mourn the loved subject or object when it is
lost. Freud explains that grief is the feeling of losing love and once it is fully lost desolation and

America Needs Internet Censorship Essay
Tears begin to fall down a child s face. Her body goes into shock out of fear. Her mother warned
her about watching inappropriate content, and there it was, right on her computer screen. This
could not have happened though. All she was doing was casually browsing the internet before a

the lack of censorshipon the internet. Internet censorshiprelates to the removal of offensive,

As a matter of fact, those individuals with damaging thoughts are the ones that watch and produce
pornography. Additionally, exposure to obscene material correlates with increased rapes,
prostitution, child molestation, violent crime, the abuse of women, and sex addiction in men
(Hacker 5). Many of these correlations are a result of ideas that pornography planted in minds.
Pornography alone does not cause people to commit a sexual crime, but it affects minds enough to
influence people to act in an unethical way.
Censoring the internet would also protect the minds of citizens from corrupt propaganda.
Propaganda that is placed by the government is generally misleading and discourages deep
thinking. An example is Obama s campaign in 2008. People loved [Obama s campaign], but many
did not understand what type of change he was talking about. Such propaganda stirred passions and
made people feel good, but it did not allow people to think critically about the issues. Rather,
Obama smartly played off anti incumbent sentiment that was sweeping the nation (Snowball 71).
Other times, the government will place propaganda on the internet to influence citizens to take a
certain action. According to John Turner, voters are being misled by the propaganda of think tanks
and the Coalition. Propaganda serves as part of government coercion. The propaganda seems to be
an encouragement of action,

Four Strings Research Paper
Violins and cellos both have four strings.
The violin and the cello have several differences in the size, tuning, tone production and length of
each string. These distinctions make the difference between violin and cello response and tone. A
professional string player will choose the strings used on his instrument very carefully to match the
style of playing.
Tunings
The violin and the cello both have four strings. However, the strings are tuned to different
pitches. The lowest string on the violin is tuned to a G, while the lowest string on a cello is tuned
to a C an octave plus a fifth lower than the G. The remaining strings move by fifths on both
instruments. This gives the pitches C, G, D and A on the cello and G, D, A and E on the violin.
Thickness
The thickness of violin and cello strings is significantly different. You would not be able to take
a violin string and put it on a cello. In general, the lowest strings on a cello and violin will be the
thickest strings, and the strings become thinner as you ascend. A low C cello string is almost twice
as thick as the lowest G string on the violin. Additionally, some performers purposely select thicker
than average strings to get a richer tone.

The cello strings have a darker, fuller sound, while the violin strings have a brighter, more
penetrating sound. The lowest strings on both instruments produce the most gritty sound. The
second strings are generally used for lyrical singing passages. The third string on both instruments
has a penetrating but full sound, and the highest strings are narrow sounding and penetrating. As
you go higher, the strings become thinner, creating a more brilliant sound in the higher registers.
The main difference is that the cello will always have a darker and deeper sound than the violin,

How Did Fillipo Brunelleschi Contribute To The Renaissance
As the Renaissance was the rebirth of Greco Roman culture, the architecture in Italy was based off
of Classical Roman examples. In that era, an architect s journey to Rome was required to study the
buildings and ruins. Italian architecture was created through pillars, columns, arches, domes, and
entablatures. Renaissancearchitecture is one of the most appreciated in the world. Humanist
architects wished to construct structures that would connect with people through emotions and
reason. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio s architectural writings also helped the Italian architects create a
sense of beauty. The two leading architects in the Early Renaissance were Filippo Brunelleschi and
Leon Battista Alberti. Brunelleschi mainly created churches. HIs dome of FlorenceBasilica was the
largest dome in the pre industrial world. This dome is not considered Renaissance work, for it is
gothic. Brunelleschi s other full buildings are considered Renaissance, and the most popular of
them all is Basilica of San Lorenzo. The exterior has blind arches, while the interior has planar
classicism. Alberti was a theorist. He was the most influential architectural theorist in the Early
Renaissance. He instructed architects on how to turn old, classic buildings into modern ones. Alberti

Controversy Over Hand Writing
In a world of evolution, it is often found difficult to accept a new trade or skill that partially
substitutes a skill so commonly used and accepted today. As generations pass, people discover new
things that revival the beliefs of the past and handwriting is not exempt from this course of
evolution. People have hit that critical point of rivalry between handwriting and its challenger typing
. Handwriting is a skill known by people for centuries and even prior to handwriting people
painted or carved to record information. In today s world, typing keeps becoming more of a key
player and triumphs over hand writing in many aspects. It is imperative to understand the

Typing allows people to type at speeds unrivaled by handwriting. This speed can save people a
lot of time especially when it comes to larger manuscripts, such as papers, reports, or essays. This

only record as fast as the speed of thought, but to also focus more on the content of the work rather
than the legibility. Handwriting has better recall however typing is merely a different form of

The Battle Of The Mountain Warfare
There is a nice sound to the phrase mountain warfare. It has a ring of daring; it sounds much
cleaner than trench warfare and lighter than tank warfare. The only thing that can match it is war in
the air, and that has become too deadly to be nice any more. It has also become too familiar, while
war in the mountains is still strange enough to sound romantic. Except, of course, to the men who
have to fight it. Walter Bernstein, Italy, January 1944 (1)
With a thud, the Allied attempt to sweep Hitler s feet out from underneath him crashed into the
fortified Apennine Mountains of Italy. The slow moving campaign in Italy had lost all its
momentum, hitting the brick wall that the Apennines were. Garrisoned peaks swarming with Nazi
soldiers deterred any attacks. The Americans were unable to pass these natural fortresses. A foot
attack in the light of day would be easily seen and mowed down by machine gun fire, an attack by
armored vehicles would be too loud and alert the Germans, and an attack under the shade of night
would be impossible and dangerous with foot soldiers or machinery. The Nazi troops would not fall
to any conventional troops or weapons. Something revolutionary, new, and different would need to
be used to send the Germans running. The United States Tenth Mountain Division, brand new and
untested, would be the ones called upon to complete this task. The Tenth Mountain soldiers, or
more fondly, the ski troops, were sent into Northern Italy. They, using

Difference Between Deep Ecology And Western Worldview
Every person has a different way of viewing the world that is based on what a our simple beliefs
are and with our basic beliefs and values. We are able to make sense of the world and to gain an
understanding of knowing where our place and purpose in the world, through this we are able to
choose between the behaviours of right and wrong. This is called the western worldview, where
we have an understanding of being placed in the world that is based on human dominance over
nature, the restricted use of natual resources, and increased economic growth to manage an
expanding industrial base (Linda R. Berg, 2008 ).
Western Worldviews on the Environment
When it comes to the environmental beliefs there two main worldviews, the Western worldview
and the deep ecology worldview. Although both of these worldviews are broad generalizations
(Linda R. Berg, 2008 ) they are at opposite ends of a range of different worldviews that are related

Together, along with philospher George Sessions they discuss how deep ecology is an
understanding of knowing where we stand as humans in the world alongside nature and spiritual

extreme shift in how humankind can relate themselves to the environment (Linda R. Berg, 2008 ,

everything that breaths life have the right to exist. It challenges individuals and cultures to share the
same inner spirituality that is connected to the natural world, but many people in this day in age
have not embraced the Western worldview or the deep ecology

Body Armor
istory
The history of body armor is a long one. Armor supposedly dates back to before recorded history
with primitive, or tribal, warriors using leather or animal skins to protect themselves. Whether it be
protecting themselves from animals they were hunting or other humans, body armor has been an
important part of protection for civilization for many years. Many armor in history has used linens,
leathers or animal hides, and a variety of metals. In the 11th century bce, Chinese warriors wore
armour made of five to seven layers of rhinoceros skin, and ox hides were similarly used by the
Mongols in the 13th century ce. Fabric armour too has a long history, with thick, multilayered linen
cuirasses (armour covering the body from neck to waist) worn by the Greek heavy infantry of the
5th century bce and quilted linen coats worn in northern India until the 19th century. (Mansoor,
2015)
Body armor has changed throughout the years to accommodate for advancements of weapons
used in combat, or dangers faced. In the 14th century chain mail was a widely adopted body
armor. Chain mail was made of chain links woven together in an over shirt. It was relatively
impervious to slashing strokes from a weapon, that s why it was used so widely. It could ... Show

that many people see farming today. However, I noticed that you claimed that we, the pigs, are
exploited by Joel Salatin. To me this seemed like an attempt to slight Joel Salatin even though he
is trying very hard to create a successful sustainable farm. I participate in the holon so all of the
work that I contribute will benefit me more in the long run. I am not exploited because all of the
work that I put into the farm, voluntary or otherwise, enables the farm to support me with a more
comfortable and enjoyable life. As animals we do get a large part of our lives taken from us by
Joel. However, in return for what he takes he allows us to live lives that are far better than our
feedlot counterparts. The root... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

moments when you show that you do not completely agree with Joel. I believe that Joel has set
up a system of holons that work together similarly to a biosphere which allows his farm to self

Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye-The Two Lives Of Mrs....
Seeing Double: The Two Lives of Mrs. Breedlove Growing up, the one thing Pauline Breedlove
really desired was a nickname, but instead, as an adult, she ends with a pet name . Toni Morrison
s novel The Bluest Eye follows young Pecola Breedlove through her dismal life as she is
repeatedly worn down by the pressures from both the dominant white society and the African
American community she is a part of. Pecola is neglected or ignored by almost everyone she
encounters, including her own mother. Mrs. Breedlove, however, also suffered from an abnormal
childhood, causing her to focus on working for a white family rather than her own, perpetuating the
cycle in which a problematic childhood problematic parenting. To cope with her dissatisfaction of...

Breedlove s fundamental misinterpretation of her role in white society is representative of every
African American in the novel and how they fail to reality test . Similar to how Mrs. Breedlove
cannot meaningfully distinguish between her two worlds, Cholly also fails due to his traumatizing
childhood and Pecola even has a conversation with an imaginary figure at the end, showing her
confusion of internal and external reality. The African American characters exhibit a
misunderstanding of their reality, incapable of comprehending their roles in their community
versus the oppressive white one that surrounds them. Although it might seem like there are some
seemingly unaffected African American characters, such as the narrator Claudia, they also
demonstrate abnormal behavior. Claudia, for example, has an irrational hatred of things, such as
the Fishers daughter and dolls, because she cannot separate their external existence from her
internal opinions. Through closely analyzing Mrs. Breedlove s portrayal as an animal while in
white society, one can recognize how every African American character in the novel is like Mrs.
Breedlove in that they share an inability to fully understand how their role in white society is
different from their

The Battle Of Yorktown By William Faulkner
Battle of Yorktown
A Striking Start
You are galloping full speed at full speed like it is the last day of your life, you ride into the city
of Yorktown fiercely, then your rider wants you to go faster, you are galloping faster than you
have ever run, as fast as a speeding bullet. The wind is slapping your face as hard as a hammer,
you finally run into the sea of smoke, muskets, and bayonets. The person riding you violently
thrusts his mighty sword, and swiftly fires his French pistol. Cannonballs fly over you like soaring
hawks destroying the fortifications that may have taken years to build, you are a proud horse in
The American Revolutionary War, and you will never stop galloping for the Patriots even if it kills
you.

French troops commanded by George Washington and, admiral Francois, Count de Grasse a

defending the headquarters, but on the other side of the James River in Gloucester there were only
1,000 British troops to protect the fort against 3,000 French, and troops from the continental army.
The Patriots set up a hospital 2 miles southeast from British lines, this is convenient because they

The British soldiers were cornered because the Continental Army attacked from all sides. The
Continental Army did what was the worst that could happen to the British during the Revolutionary
War.On September 20th the Continental Army reached Yorktown and started to attack. The
Continental Army set up a camp far outside the lines of the British Headquarters so the continental

Crimes are now being solved with the help of computers and at a higher rate.
Movies with special effects are made with computers. Most of the movies today use computers to
make things look realistic but they are not. For instance the movie CARS an animated movie
would not be here today if computers where not around. Imagine not be able to see television
shows that entertain us simply because of the graphics used. The graphics used entice us into
show because it make the show a lot realer then they are. Almost all movies have special effects
and those special effects are made by computers.
Computers are here to stay and things will only get better, because they are here to make
everyday task simpler. Since computers we have been able to cure diseases, find people and help
stay connected to family and friends aboard. As Kinsley s said, Home computers [В…] the internet
have expanded human freedom (559). We are able to do so much more with our daily task and

Job Motivation And Salary Satisfaction
The wages for employees in child day care are not high in comparison to other professions (Van
Der Kwartel et al., 2007). When employees are content with their salary, they are likely subject to
mental agreements (Lee Lin, 2014). Job motivation and salary satisfaction are feelings that can
inspire employees and drive forces in competitive returns for organizations (Lee Lin, 2014).
Mental agreement signifies the expectation of the staff towards the organization and the
expectation of the organization towards the staff (Schein, 1980). Over a third of childcare staff
leaves their jobs annually in order to earn a better living (Whitebook, 1999). Igalens and Roussel
s (1999) study measured and compared the impact of compensation on job satisfaction and work
motivation of exempt (269) and nonexempt (297) employees. The findings revealed that fixed pay
could have a positive influence on job satisfaction on the principles of internal and external equity.
Internal equity refers to employees perception of their fixed pay as fair in relation to their
contributions to their organization, compared to other employees in the company used as a
reference. External equity denotes to employees feeling of being treated fairly, compared to other
employees outside their organization (Igalens Roussel). Heneman and Schwab (1985) defined
salary satisfaction as the degree to which employees were satisfied with their current salary.
Employees compared the efforts they made with the salary they

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Title
The significance of the title is not only to summarize what the book is about, but it is also about
the title of the book inside the book. It s simple, yet to the point.
The author most likely chose this title because it is simplistic yet jam packed with meaning. Not
only does it refer to black southern maids working for whites, but it is also the title of the book
Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minny create.
The Help is yet again about black maids, who are known as the help. This term was very common
because almost everyone had maids working for them in the 1960s. The Help is not just about
maids, it is also about the owners who treated their maids as inferiors. Equality was not a leading
factor during this time period.
Author
Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, born in 1969, was raised in Jackson Mississippi. She
graduated from the University of Alabama and earned her degree in English as well as creative
writing. Later on, she moved to New York City and worked in magazine publishing as well as
marketing. Now Kathryn Stockett lives in Atlanta with her husband and daughter.
To my surprise, Kathryn s family had a maid named Demetrie when she was younger. At the age of
twenty eight, Demetrie cooked and cleaned for the family. Much like Minny, Demetrie married an
abusive alcoholic. In many ways, Demetrie is also like Aibileen, Kathryn adored her. Kathryn

Variations of the Game of Cricket
Trobriand cricket, engaged by Trobriand Islanders, has been referred to as a distinct variation of
standard cricket. Christian missionaries originally introduced cricket to the islands as a sport to
discourage war among the populace. The sport has been extensively modified by the Trobriand
society through increasing the amount of players, dancing, chanting, and adjusted bats and balls.
As the game of cricket substituted war among the people of the island when war was forbidden, it
has incorporated most of the older traditions linked with war for the Trobriand nation. The sport
also reflects the objective of pride instead of ceremonial tradition, which was introduced to islands
by their British conqueror and the American soldier during World War II.
The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea were usually horticulturists who demonstrated and achieved
prestige and manhood throughout contest. These rivalries included the ability to plant yams, the
skill of making good trades and acquiring valuables, and maintaining the strength of a fighter.
Conversely, when Europeans missionaries occupied the island, the Trobrianders were required to
give up their tradition of warfare. When this happened, they lost a cultural outlet necessary to
preserve the political society and equilibrium of power between the Australasian islands. In order to
complement this loss, the missionaries initiated the game of cricket to the islanders, soothing their
competitive character. Even though this game was

The Politics of Campaign Finance Essay
From the very first elections held in the United States, there has always been a strong link
between money and politics. During the first elections in the late 1700 s you had to be a white
male landowner over the age of 21 in order to vote, meaning that you had to have money in order
to have your vote counted. It seems today that we cannot go a day with out seeing campaign
finance in the media, whether or not it is through advertisements for politicians in the media or
asked to donate money to help let your favorite candidate win. Because campaign finance has
always been on the back burner of political issues, there has hardly been any change to the large
influence money has over the electionprocess and politicians. While money has it s... Show more

During his campaign McKinley supported the Gold Standard, encouraged the minority groups to
maintain their unique cultural differences within the larger societies and launched a new way of
campaign advertisement that lead him to victory.
Of course this would not have been at all possible if it were not for his campaign leader Mark
Hanna. Through the leadership of Mark Hanna, McKinley was able to forge alliances with big
businessmen, prosperous farmers and professions making his campaign budget out to be about
3.5 million dollars causing his campaign to be the most expensive of its time. With the discovery
of the large amount of money spent on McKinley s campaign several progressive politicians and
muckraking journalists accused the wealthy donors of corrupting the electoral process and alleged
that the donors were being fed special handouts and favors as a result of donating their money.
However, these cries were ignored until the 1904 political elections that lead to the beginning of the
organized progress for campaign finance reform. (Morgan, 2003)

Microfinance Institutions Sustainability
MFI sustainability: The role of subsidies and grants
Microfinance institutions (MFI) have created intense debates in an industry of traditional banking.
Being primarily focused on mission of poverty reduction through economic stimulation of low
income areas, MFI have sharpened the credit policy to specification of area of interests. The major
distinction is loan interest rate being notably higher in comparison to profit orientated financial
institutions (Rosenberg et al. 2009). The reason roots in excessive cost of funds and
administrative loses faced by growing industry. As noted in Cull et.al (2009), interest paid by
borrowers represents the struggle of MFI to overcome the burden of expenses and achieve
financial sustainability. The latter however, can be reached by altering the capital structure of
MFI through diversification of source of funding or rejection of capital which can lead to
malfunction. As soon as the changes are implemented, institutions can proceed to expansion
reaching increasing return to scale and beneficially affecting sustainability. This essay would
focus on the role on subsidies in performance of MFI. The rationale behind exploring this form of
noncommercial capital is that total amount of subsidized capital in MFI reached almost 16 billion
in 2009 (Bloomberg, 2012) posing a question regarding the alternative and probably more efficient
use of respective funds to support poor. The second reason derives from the number of researches
discussed later,

The short story The Lottery was written in 1948 by Shirley Jackson. It was first published in a
popular magazine, The New Yorker (Kirszner Mandell 419). The story starts out on a pleasant
summer day but has a much darker ending. This instantly caused mass confusion and anger by
most of the magazine s readers. Some readers even canceled their subscription to the magazine.
Although the readers demanded answers, Jackson refused to give any explanation of the story. The
best explanation was from a literary editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, who was also confused
by the story. Jackson explained that the story was written to shock the readers by dramatizing the

The Pearl Harbor Essay
The Pearl Harbor Spies On 7 December 1941, the Japan Naval fleet launched a precise and
devastating bombing of Pearl Harbor, which stunned the United States. The Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Naval Fleet, so they could advance into Malaya and the
Dutch East Indies to access natural resources to further their war effort. However, the Pearl Harbor
bombing became an everlasting memory to Americans. Two little known contributors to this event
had a profound effect on the planning and execution of the attack. This paper will explore the
actions of Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn and Takeo Yoshikawa, two spies who initially went
undetected to collect intelligence on the U.S. Naval fleet, and how their actions affected the U.S.
Background
Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn served as a midshipman in the German Navy during World War I and
was a member of the German Navy s secret police from 1928 through 1930. Kuehn also studied

Open Book Philosophy Quiz
After reading this week s required readings, take this open book philosophy quiz. Answer the
following questions in paragraph form. This is a short answer worksheet, not an essay composition.
1. What is philosophy? Include a brief description of the different branches of philosophy
Philosophy is the pursuit of knowledge or wisdom generally topic specific. Philosophers aim to
answer three main questions which have become the three primary branches of technology.
Metaphysics seeks to answer questions relating to being or existence. Epistemology seeks to answer
questions relating to knowledge (criteria, sources, limits, ect.). The third branch of philosophy

4. Identify and define at least two fallacies. Give an example from your personal experience (what
you have heard, read, or said) for each fallacy.
One fallacy that we all have seen used frequently in recent months is the Argumentum ad hominem
(argument against the person) This is a fallacy where you use characteristics or events that a
person was involved in and use those to discredit their beliefs or statements. During the 2012
elections this tactic was used heavily during the debates and promo spots for both parties. A
second favored fallacy is the False dilemma Fallacy. According to the text this is where you offer
two choices (usually only one favorable) when more exist to prove that the favorable option is the
best or only valid option. I use this fallacy often with my children. At desert time I give them the
option of a desert or no desert. Sometimes they do not like the desert choice I have made in which
their choice becomes what I offered or nothing. Now technically there are several other desert
options that I would give the. I use this as a reinforcement technique to foster thankfulness and
obedience.
5. Why do we attempt to avoid fallacies?
We attempt to avoid fallacies because they negate truth and leave us open to criticism on our
beliefs. The use of fallacies can also create a stigma around the facts we

The Epidemic Of The Bubonic Plague
Epidemiology The prevalence of disease in the thirteenth century was very common in Europe, and
Africa, later on spread to parts of Asia. Currently the bubonic is not that common but is still
infecting a small portion of the earth. The Bubonic Plague is an infectious disease caused by the
bacteria Yersinia Pestis, a zoonotic bacteria, usually found in small animals and their fleas. It is
transmitted between animals and humans by the bite of infected fleas, direct contact, inhalation
and rarely, ingestion of infective materials.
Locations
The second pandemic, widely known as the Black Death or the Great Plague, originated in China in
1334 and spread along the great trade routes to Constantinople and then to Europe, where it claimed
an estimated 60% of the European population (Benedictow, 2008). Entire towns were wiped out.
Some contemporary historians report that on occasion, there were not enough survivors remaining
to bury the dead (Gross, 1995). Despite the vast devastation caused by this pandemic, however,
massive labor shortages due to high mortality rates sped up the development of many economic,
social, and technical modernizations (Benedictow, 2008). It has even been considered a factor in
the emergence of the Renaissance in the late 14th century.
Specific Region Historians believe the outbreak started in China in 1334 and then spread westward
along trade routes through Russia, Turkey and Europe.

Persuasive Essay On Food Deserts
Tony Robbins once said that It s not resources but resourcefulness that ultimately makes the
difference. That one quote summarizes the difference between wanting a change and actually
working for a change. You simply have to use the resources around you to make an effort in your
life and make things work.
Someone in Roswell and someone in Atlanta does not eat the same thing for their meals. As a
matter of fact, here, candy, chips, chocolate, and cookies are just a few of the things that our
generation calls breakfast instead of snacks . Even if they are having a snack, people here would
probably choose chocolate instead of fruit. Why? Because there are food deserts EVERYWHERE
in America. Specifically, in Georgia, nearly two million... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Food deserts are often the effects of a lack of grocery stores, farmers markets, and healthy food
providers. The metro area that we call home is fun filled and surrounded with food deserts. Food
deserts impart our lives in a numerous amount of ways; in some cases, they put our community in
life or death situations. They play a part of our obesity level and why there are most obese people
here in America than anywhere else.
Location plays an important in why we live in food deserts. Metro Atlanta is in the middle of
Georgia, which hinders our chances of receiving fresh fruits and vegetables. In order to receive the
proper and nutritious foods, many of us that live in the metro Atlanta area literally has to travel at
least 10 miles outside the city to even get to them, let alone buy them. Cities surrounding Atlanta
have to travel to Atlanta to go to a decent grocery store. However, sometimes Atlanta cannot meet
their needs.
On the bright side, there are many programs in Atlanta responsible for decreasing food deserts in
the metropolitan area. The mobile market is the only one that I am aware of. The mobile market is a
market that brings fresh fruits and vegetables to communities, promotes good health, and provide
information and resources to food deserts.
Although food deserts have both major and deadly impacts on people s lives, the solutions to
ending them, and the people needed to execute the solutions are quite simple. Because attracting

How Does Giles Corey Tell The Truth In The Crucible
And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. John 8:32.. The Crucible is all about
telling the truth. In the play no one wants to stand up and fight for what s right. The few people
who are courageous and tell the truth are punished for it. When first reading the Crucible the
only thing that comes to mind is the witch trials, but when looking closer it focuses on courage,
weakness and truth. It s easy to stand with the crowd, it takes courage to stand alone. Giles
Corey is one person who stands alone. He fights for his wife and brings sensible evidence to the
court. He tries to explain the lies of the girls and save his wife, but the court won t have it. He is
pressed for having courage and standing up for the truth. John

What Walker And Avant ( 2016 ) Outlined Essay
The following concept analysis is formulated to follow an abbreviated version of what Walker
and Avant (2016) outlined. Select a Concept The concept of Pediatric Adaptation to
Hospitalization has been a topic talked about since the early sixties, if not before. When a child is
hospitalized they experience a wide variety of emotional stressors. Separation from family, stress,
isolation, anxiety, depression, fear, unfamiliar surroundings, normal routine interruption, lack of
understanding ( why do I feel this way , why is this happening to me ), pain, and continuous
stranger interaction are a few of the feelings and emotions that children experience during
hospitalization. Langford (1961) stated This increased body of knowledge about the emotional
effects of illness and hospitalization has been reflected in changes in the practices of many
pediatric hospitals and services in order to lessen the psychological hazards to their child patients .
Although the topic has been discussed, a true definition has not been formulated. Positive
adaptation will foster healing, increased comfort, less stress, and an overall increased psychosocial
wellbeing. On the other hand, negative adaptation will prolong healing, increase pain levels, foster
acting out behaviors, and increase stress which in turn effects the immune system. The ways in
which a child handles these stresses and the anxiety and tension provoked by them have been found
to be related to a number of factors: the

The Development And Constant Change Of Infants Essay
The development and constant change of infants is mind blowing and incredible. Each infant
develops at approximately the same, quick pace, but each small life in the grand scheme of infant
development could vary greatly (Santrock, 2016). There are many different factors that must be
considered in the first years of life that are extremely crucial for development and change. In order
to better understand infantdevelopment, it is important to consider how each of these factors will
affect the baby; three examples of these factors are sleep patterns, eating habits, and motor
development, all which impact the general health of the infant overall.
It is relatively general knowledge that infants tend to sleep much more than the average child,
adult, or adolescent. My virtual child, Margo, in between three and eight months, was sleeping six
hours out of the night, and taking a few two hour naps during the day, consistently sleeping about
12 hours per day (My Virtual Child, 2014). The average amount of sleep that an infant will get on
any given night is anywhere in between ten to twenty one hours per day (Santrock, 2016). Based
on this knowledge, it can be concluded that Margo s sleeping habits are not necessarily abnormal
for her age. Margo was also strictly breastfed. In the study Infant Sleep Development from 3 to 6
Months Postpartum: Links with Maternal Sleep and Paternal Involvement, it was stated that there
was correlation between infants that were strictly breastfed at

The New U.s. Shipping Act Of 1984
The new U.S. Shipping Act, signed into law by President Reagan on March 10, 1984. The
Shipping Act of 1984 altered and replaced what was in the previous Shipping Act of 1916. Some
of the things which the Shipping Act of 1984 were different were that markets, industry,
microeconomics, law, and regulations were all different since the Act of 1916. The Shipping Act
of 1916 made all conference agreements subject to approval by the Federal Maritime Commission,
or FMC for short. On August 3, 1981, Senator Gorton introduced a bill (S. 1593) to revise U.S.
regulation of international liner shipping. This bill was the forerunner of the current Shipping Act
of 1984. Where the Shipping Act of 1916 left unclear as to whether the FMC had ultimate... Show

Although U.S. law has acknowledged the constructive role of conferences in the liner trades since
the Shipping Act of 1916, the American commitment to free trade and competition has led
Congress to disallow many features of international conferences. Most importantly, the Shipping
Act of 1916 required shipping conferences transporting the foreign commerce of the United States
to offer membership to any liner carrier capable of engaging in such service. U.S. conferences are
therefore termed open conferences . A conference agreement had to meet a strict antitrust standard
in order to be approved. Deferred rebates were illegal and the freedom of carriers to tie.
S. 1593 provided for the following:
(1) Legalization of closed conferences.
(2) A broad scope of conference activities to enable carriers to discuss and fix prices and
conditions of service, pool earnings and traffic, allot ports, regulate sailings, limit the volume and
character of cargo carried, engage in exclusive working arrangements, enter into agreements to
regulate and prevent competition among themselves, and bring intermodal cargo transportation
under the ambit of permissible conference agreements.
(3) Use of loyalty contracts, except deferred rebates.
(4) Absolute antitrust immunity for ocean common carriers engaging in any activities described in
(1), (2), or (3), above.

Difference Between John Smith And William Bradford s Journals
John Smith and William Bradford were two authors of the 1600s, who wrote journals about the
the way they lived in the New World. John Smith s journal was filled with adventure and talked
about how heroic he was to persuade people to come to America. William Bradford s journal was
about his voyage to coming to America and his spiritual teachings and beliefs. The three main
difference between John Smith and William Bradford s Journals are their styles of writing,
preconceived notion of the Native Americans, and their reasons for coming into America.
The first difference between John Smith and William Bradford journals was their writing styles and

Breidbart V Olshan, Decision And Order, Index No Essay
Breidbart v Olshan, Decision and Order, Index No. 003610/12 Business organizations operate in
a variety of legal forms. The common forms are sole proprietorships, partnerships (general
partnerships and limited partnerships) and corporations (traditional S and C corporations and
limited liability corporations). The form of organizations is generally decided from the beginning
of the business based on several factors, such as ease and cost of formation, capital requirements
and cost of money, flexibility in managing and decision making, government rules, liabilities, risk
and management, and tax considerations. The article titled Decision Yields Hits and Misses for
Plaintiff in Partnership Dissolution Case, that I will discuss below is about a partnership dispute
that lead to several claims, including dissolution claim. The case filled in a state court in New York
state, which called Supreme Court State of New York Nassau County, (a trial court), under title
Murray Breidbart (plaintiff) against Morton L. Olshan, Mall Properties, Inc., Janoff Olshan, Inc.,
Boundary Realty Associates, and Audrey Rosenberg (defendants). This Supreme Court here is not
the highest court. Most states have three levels of court system: trial courts, where litigation is
begun; intermediate reviewing courts; and a final reviewing court. States use different names to
describe these three level of courts. New York has labelled its trial court as the supreme court. This

Abstract
This paper examines the effects that cannabis abuse has on human health over an extended period.
Over the years, some researchers have concluded that continuous use of the drug during
adolescence, but not adulthood, could permanently impair cognition and increase the risk for
psychiatric diseases. Other studies suggest that heavy use amongst users can cause changes in
subjective mental status, brain functioning, and neuropsychological performance. Approximately
9% of those who experiment with cannabis will become addicted, and the treatment for addiction
can be challenging, as it often leads to withdrawal symptoms. Consequently, most governments
around the globe decided to enact legislation in the early to mid 20th century, to help control its
abuse; however, recently, some countries in the Western World have begun to allow its use for
medicinal and recreational purposes. All information for the writing of this paper has been

The Fault Of Our Stars By John Green
In the novel, The Fault in Our Stars, the author, John Green, provides the reader with a theme that
people tend to differ other people who do not appear to be the same as every other average human
being. People would contradict this universal truth, but it cannot be denied. From the onset, Hazel
is receiving extra care and attention from her parents and guardians. Mom I shouted. Nothing.
Again, louder, MOM! She ran in wearing a threadbare pink towel under her armpits, dripping,
vaguely panicked What s wrong? Nothing. Sorry I didn t know you were in the shower (Green

aforementioned statement exhibits that, because of Hazel s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Doctors, Hazel s parents and Augustus are all she s got and they all are pleasant and amiable
around her. People around Hazel are looking at her in an abnormal manner, making her feel
uncomfortable in her positioning; giving her the realization of her weakness. Hazel nervously
thinks, I was embarrassed to have this lady kneeling in front of me while everyone watches (Lee
143). It is an agonizing truth that people seem to have a high curiosity contained in their minds
that make them do things that they do not intentionally mean to do; staring at someone who is
pressurized under the circumstances and making them feel embarrassed and weird in their
present situation is not what describes humanity. Everyone present in the airport with Hazel,
were staring constantly towards her as she is getting special medical treatment; curious about
what is going on and wondering, does this girl have some disease? They look at Hazel as if she
is not a human like everyone else; making her feel uncomfortable and insecure about herself.
Augustus walks away, giving the excuse that he needs to buy himself a meal. It is an
embarrassment to be seen next to someone who is partially abnormal and different from the
majority; Augustus could not handle how people can be so harsh and heartless with other people
so he decides to turn a blind eye to the situation. Hazel is not normal in front

Essay on Dance in Master Harold and the Boys
The Metaphor of Dance in Fugard s Master Harold ...and the Boys In Athol Fugard s play Master
Harold ... and the Boys dance becomes a metaphor for how society can work harmoniously
together, yet there are conflicts that prevent it from happening. Specifically, ballroom dance
becomes a metaphor to show the conflict between a cooperative society and the disappointment
associated with life and our inability to force change. This is expressed by Sam teaching Willie the
mastery of dance and also educating Hally on the significance of the championships, and ultimately
through the final dance performance. The difficulty associated with perfection is first seen during
the plays opening when Sam is teaching Willie how to perform the quickstep... Show more content

Nobody trips or stumbles or bumps into anybody else...like being in a dream about a world in
which accidents don t happen (1264). To Sam, the selectivity of the championships final 6
couples, become a metaphor for an ideal society that we should be all trying to reach. The dance
competition sparks hope in Sam and Hally and they both wish that the dream of dance could
make A World Without Collusions (1264). A world where people will no longer bump into each
other and there would be no problems. Both of them come to the opinion that Maybe there s
hope for mankind after all as they recall famous people, like Gandhi and the Pope, who have
stepped out of the mold of society to create change (1262). Sam, as the teacher notes, We re
bumping into each other all the time. None of us knows the steps and there s no music playing.
And it doesn t stop with us. The whole world is doing it all the time (1262). Fugard makes the
point that everyone in the world is still struggling in ways to get along with one another and
while it is not easy, it should not be a reason to not try to learn to dance in harmony with others
and create a better world. Hally, Willie, and Sam are confronted with the reality the world might be
full of dance beginners rather than the more experienced six championship couples, when Hally is
forced to meet his issues with his fathers return from the hospital. As a child, Hally had to bring his
father home and help him after his drunken stupors. This

  • 2. Examples Of Archetype In The Odyssey The character archetype, the creature of nightmare, is showcased numerous times between both novels, The Odyssey and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, respectively. Polyphemus, the cyclops and giant son of Poseidon, which is featured in the ninth chapter of Homer s, The Odyessey, and the giant squid, featured in the eighteenth chapter of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, are just two examples of the character archetype, the creature of nightmare. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, who is the main protagonist of the novel, and his shipmates meet Polyphemus after docking on the island of the cyclopes. Odysseus s curiosity wandered him and his men right into the cyclopes cave. This is when Odysseus begins speaking to the aforementioned creature, claiming his name to be Nohbdy, that he and his men are from Troy, and that their ship had crashed among the rocks of the island. After mentioning that his ship was broken up on the rocks, the mighty man picks up two of Odysseus s men, bashes their heads in, then eats them whole, and goes to sleep. Bramson connects the readers to these children, their community and the people in their lives that make it possible for them to live close to normal lives. He then shifts the responsibility from the caretakers that are going to get old, frail and fragile to the communities that have the means to help these people when family members no longer can. The last paragraph gives them a real person, an example they cannot imagine away a real life boy that could be helped by a group home. • 6. The Island Of Doctor Moreau Benjamin Rush once stated that freedom can exist only in the society of knowledge. Without learning, men are incapable of knowing their rights (Rush and Runes N.p). Throughout time, ethically controversial sciences, from vivisection to stem cell research, have embodied a negative stereotype in the eyes of western societies, and have consequently withdrew the freedom that allows scientists to make innovative discoveries. In H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, this perspective is portrayed through Edward Prendick, an upper class English gentleman with a subtle passion for science. After being stranded on a remote pacific island isolated from civilization, Prendick s perspective on Dr. Moreau s unethical and controversial studies begins to transform over time. The idea that isolation from civilization can result in the freedom to explore one s curiosities is portrayed through Prendick s initial unacceptance of Moreau s vivisection, which, as time on the island elapses, reshapes to one of interest. In The Island of Doctor Moreau, as Edward Prendick spends more time away from civilized society, his perspective regarding Dr. Moreau s ethically controversial discipline, vivisection, begins to shift from a sense of repugnance to one of enthusiasm. Through these perspectives, H.G. Wells argues that Prendick s isolation from civilization is the principle force allowing him to freely embrace the unethical studies on the island and explore his natural curiosity for science, ... Ray was quoted saying, When I started to sing like myself as opposed to imitating Nat Cole, which I had done for a while when I started singing like Ray Charles, it had this spiritual and churchy, this religious or gospel sound. It had this holiness and preachy tone to it. It was very controversial. I got a lot of criticism for it. (San Jose Mercury News, 1994) Charles soon became more innovative when he realized that his first recordings were only skillful imitations of his heroes. After joining Atlantic Records, Charles s sound became more and more original and found breaking. He took many tunes from gospel music and put them to secular lyrics performed in front of a jazz lineup playing R B with exceptionally tight arrangements. He sometimes even added a country music feel to some of his arrangements for example in his version of Hank Snow s I m Moving On. The Middle Years Do it right or don t do it at all. People going through grief often feel disorganized and have difficulty eating, sleeping or concentrating. Grief counselors ease the expression of emotion and thought about the loss and give insight to their feelings (Doka 1996). There are numerous reactions to grief, both good and bad. Behaviors that deal with grief positively are through art, writing, support groups or celebrations of the loved one. Some negative ways to deal with grief include feelings of anger, frustration, helplessness, depression and withdrawal from family and friends. A common yet self destructive way to cope with loss is by turning to substances such as alcohol or drugs. This also requires counselors in order to help them get to the root of their problems. Sigmund Freud was an influential psychoanalyst in the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He made many advances in the field of psychology which have impacted other academic areas such as sociology and social work. In which he compared mourning a normal if painful event from which hardly anyone is spared with a pathological although very common one: melancholia (Fiorini et al. 2007). As a matter of fact, those individuals with damaging thoughts are the ones that watch and produce pornography. Additionally, exposure to obscene material correlates with increased rapes, prostitution, child molestation, violent crime, the abuse of women, and sex addiction in men (Hacker 5). Many of these correlations are a result of ideas that pornography planted in minds. Pornography alone does not cause people to commit a sexual crime, but it affects minds enough to influence people to act in an unethical way. Censoring the internet would also protect the minds of citizens from corrupt propaganda. Propaganda that is placed by the government is generally misleading and discourages deep thinking. An example is Obama s campaign in 2008. People loved [Obama s campaign], but many did not understand what type of change he was talking about. Such propaganda stirred passions and made people feel good, but it did not allow people to think critically about the issues. Rather, Obama smartly played off anti incumbent sentiment that was sweeping the nation (Snowball 71). Other times, the government will place propaganda on the internet to influence citizens to take a certain action. • 12. Four Strings Research Paper Violins and cellos both have four strings. The violin and the cello have several differences in the size, tuning, tone production and length of each string. These distinctions make the difference between violin and cello response and tone. A professional string player will choose the strings used on his instrument very carefully to match the style of playing. Tunings The violin and the cello both have four strings. However, the strings are tuned to different pitches. The lowest string on the violin is tuned to a G, while the lowest string on a cello is tuned to a C an octave plus a fifth lower than the G. The remaining strings move by fifths on both instruments. This gives the pitches C, G, D and A on the cello and G, D, A and E on the violin. Thickness The thickness of violin and cello strings is significantly different. You would not be able to take a violin string and put it on a cello. In general, the lowest strings on a cello and violin will be the thickest strings, and the strings become thinner as you ascend. A low C cello string is almost twice as thick as the lowest G string on the violin. Additionally, some performers purposely select thicker than average strings to get a richer tone. Tone ... • 14. How Did Fillipo Brunelleschi Contribute To The Renaissance As the Renaissance was the rebirth of Greco Roman culture, the architecture in Italy was based off of Classical Roman examples. In that era, an architect s journey to Rome was required to study the buildings and ruins. Italian architecture was created through pillars, columns, arches, domes, and entablatures. Renaissancearchitecture is one of the most appreciated in the world. Humanist architects wished to construct structures that would connect with people through emotions and reason. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio s architectural writings also helped the Italian architects create a sense of beauty. People have hit that critical point of rivalry between handwriting and its challenger typing . Handwriting is a skill known by people for centuries and even prior to handwriting people painted or carved to record information. The only thing that can match it is war in the air, and that has become too deadly to be nice any more. It has also become too familiar, while war in the mountains is still strange enough to sound romantic. Except, of course, to the men who have to fight it. Walter Bernstein, Italy, January 1944 (1) With a thud, the Allied attempt to sweep Hitler s feet out from underneath him crashed into the fortified Apennine Mountains of Italy. The slow moving campaign in Italy had lost all its momentum, hitting the brick wall that the Apennines were. Garrisoned peaks swarming with Nazi soldiers deterred any attacks. The Americans were unable to pass these natural fortresses. A foot attack in the light of day would be easily seen and mowed down by machine gun fire, an attack by armored vehicles would be too loud and alert the Germans, and an attack under the shade of night would be impossible and dangerous with foot soldiers or machinery. The Nazi troops would not fall to any conventional troops or weapons. Something revolutionary, new, and different would need to be used to send the Germans running. Difference Between Deep Ecology And Western Worldview Every person has a different way of viewing the world that is based on what a our simple beliefs are and with our basic beliefs and values. We are able to make sense of the world and to gain an understanding of knowing where our place and purpose in the world, through this we are able to choose between the behaviours of right and wrong. This is called the western worldview, where we have an understanding of being placed in the world that is based on human dominance over nature, the restricted use of natual resources, and increased economic growth to manage an expanding industrial base (Linda R. When employees are content with their salary, they are likely subject to mental agreements (Lee Lin, 2014). Job motivation and salary satisfaction are feelings that can inspire employees and drive forces in competitive returns for organizations (Lee Lin, 2014). Mental agreement signifies the expectation of the staff towards the organization and the expectation of the organization towards the staff (Schein, 1980). It s simple, yet to the point. The author most likely chose this title because it is simplistic yet jam packed with meaning. Not only does it refer to black southern maids working for whites, but it is also the title of the book Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minny create. The Help is yet again about black maids, who are known as the help. This term was very common because almost everyone had maids working for them in the 1960s. The Help is not just about maids, it is also about the owners who treated their maids as inferiors. Equality was not a leading factor during this time period. Microfinance Institutions Sustainability MFI sustainability: The role of subsidies and grants Microfinance institutions (MFI) have created intense debates in an industry of traditional banking. Being primarily focused on mission of poverty reduction through economic stimulation of low income areas, MFI have sharpened the credit policy to specification of area of interests. The major distinction is loan interest rate being notably higher in comparison to profit orientated financial institutions (Rosenberg et al. 2009). The reason roots in excessive cost of funds and administrative loses faced by growing industry. As noted in Cull et.al (2009), interest paid by borrowers represents the struggle of MFI to overcome the burden of expenses and achieve financial sustainability. The latter however, can be reached by altering the capital structure of MFI through diversification of source of funding or rejection of capital which can lead to malfunction. As soon as the changes are implemented, institutions can proceed to expansion reaching increasing return to scale and beneficially affecting sustainability. The rationale behind exploring this form of noncommercial capital is that total amount of subsidized capital in MFI reached almost 16 billion in 2009 (Bloomberg, 2012) posing a question regarding the alternative and probably more efficient use of respective funds to support poor. • 40. The Pearl Harbor Essay The Pearl Harbor Spies On 7 December 1941, the Japan Naval fleet launched a precise and devastating bombing of Pearl Harbor, which stunned the United States. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor to neutralize the U.S. Pacific Naval Fleet, so they could advance into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies to access natural resources to further their war effort. However, the Pearl Harbor bombing became an everlasting memory to Americans. Two little known contributors to this event had a profound effect on the planning and execution of the attack. This paper will explore the actions of Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn and Takeo Yoshikawa, two spies who initially went undetected to collect intelligence on the U.S. Naval fleet, and how their actions affected the U.S. Background Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn served as a midshipman in the German Navy during World War I and was a member of the German Navy s secret police from 1928 through 1930. Kuehn also studied to become a physician after World War I. During the 2012 elections this tactic was used heavily during the debates and promo spots for both parties. A second favored fallacy is the False dilemma Fallacy. According to the text this is where you offer two choices (usually only one favorable) when more exist to prove that the favorable option is the best or only valid option. I use this fallacy often with my children. At desert time I give them the option of a desert or no desert. Sometimes they do not like the desert choice I have made in which their choice becomes what I offered or nothing. Now technically there are several other desert options that I would give the. • 42. The Epidemic Of The Bubonic Plague Epidemiology The prevalence of disease in the thirteenth century was very common in Europe, and Africa, later on spread to parts of Asia. Currently the bubonic is not that common but is still infecting a small portion of the earth. The Bubonic Plague is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia Pestis, a zoonotic bacteria, usually found in small animals and their fleas. It is transmitted between animals and humans by the bite of infected fleas, direct contact, inhalation and rarely, ingestion of infective materials. Locations The second pandemic, widely known as the Black Death or the Great Plague, originated in China in 1334 and spread along the great trade routes to Constantinople and then to Europe, where it claimed an estimated 60% of the European population (Benedictow, 2008). Entire towns were wiped out. Some contemporary historians report that on occasion, there were not enough survivors remaining to bury the dead (Gross, 1995). Despite the vast devastation caused by this pandemic, however, massive labor shortages due to high mortality rates sped up the development of many economic, social, and technical modernizations (Benedictow, 2008). It has even been considered a factor in the emergence of the Renaissance in the late 14th century. Specific Region Historians believe the outbreak started in China in 1334 and then spread westward along trade routes through Russia, Turkey and Europe. Food deserts impart our lives in a numerous amount of ways; in some cases, they put our community in life or death situations. They play a part of our obesity level and why there are most obese people here in America than anywhere else. Location plays an important in why we live in food deserts. Metro Atlanta is in the middle of Georgia, which hinders our chances of receiving fresh fruits and vegetables. In order to receive the proper and nutritious foods, many of us that live in the metro Atlanta area literally has to travel at least 10 miles outside the city to even get to them, let alone buy them. Cities surrounding Atlanta have to travel to Atlanta to go to a decent grocery store. However, sometimes Atlanta cannot meet their needs. On the bright side, there are many programs in Atlanta responsible for decreasing food deserts in the metropolitan area. The mobile market is the only one that I am aware of. The mobile market is a market that brings fresh fruits and vegetables to communities, promotes good health, and provide information and resources to food deserts. Although food deserts have both major and deadly impacts on people s lives, the solutions to ending them, and the people needed to execute the solutions are quite simple. • 45. What Walker And Avant ( 2016 ) Outlined Essay The following concept analysis is formulated to follow an abbreviated version of what Walker and Avant (2016) outlined. Select a Concept The concept of Pediatric Adaptation to Hospitalization has been a topic talked about since the early sixties, if not before. When a child is hospitalized they experience a wide variety of emotional stressors. Separation from family, stress, isolation, anxiety, depression, fear, unfamiliar surroundings, normal routine interruption, lack of understanding ( why do I feel this way , why is this happening to me ), pain, and continuous stranger interaction are a few of the feelings and emotions that children experience during hospitalization. Langford (1961) stated This increased body of knowledge about the emotional effects of illness and hospitalization has been reflected in changes in the practices of many pediatric hospitals and services in order to lessen the psychological hazards to their child patients . Although the topic has been discussed, a true definition has not been formulated. Positive adaptation will foster healing, increased comfort, less stress, and an overall increased psychosocial wellbeing. On the other hand, negative adaptation will prolong healing, increase pain levels, foster acting out behaviors, and increase stress which in turn effects the immune system. The ways in which a child handles these stresses and the anxiety and tension provoked by them have been found to be related to a number of factors: the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Development And Constant Change Of Infants Essay The development and constant change of infants is mind blowing and incredible. Each infant develops at approximately the same, quick pace, but each small life in the grand scheme of infant development could vary greatly (Santrock, 2016). There are many different factors that must be considered in the first years of life that are extremely crucial for development and change. In order to better understand infantdevelopment, it is important to consider how each of these factors will affect the baby; three examples of these factors are sleep patterns, eating habits, and motor development, all which impact the general health of the infant overall. It is relatively general knowledge that infants tend to sleep much more than the average child, adult, or adolescent. My virtual child, Margo, in between three and eight months, was sleeping six hours out of the night, and taking a few two hour naps during the day, consistently sleeping about 12 hours per day (My Virtual Child, 2014). The average amount of sleep that an infant will get on any given night is anywhere in between ten to twenty one hours per day (Santrock, 2016). Based on this knowledge, it can be concluded that Margo s sleeping habits are not necessarily abnormal for her age. Margo was also strictly breastfed. In the study Infant Sleep Development from 3 to 6 Months Postpartum: Links with Maternal Sleep and Paternal Involvement, it was stated that there was correlation between infants that were strictly breastfed at ... Although U.S. law has acknowledged the constructive role of conferences in the liner trades since the Shipping Act of 1916, the American commitment to free trade and competition has led Congress to disallow many features of international conferences. Most importantly, the Shipping Act of 1916 required shipping conferences transporting the foreign commerce of the United States to offer membership to any liner carrier capable of engaging in such service. U.S. conferences are therefore termed open conferences . A conference agreement had to meet a strict antitrust standard in order to be approved. The common forms are sole proprietorships, partnerships (general partnerships and limited partnerships) and corporations (traditional S and C corporations and limited liability corporations). The form of organizations is generally decided from the beginning of the business based on several factors, such as ease and cost of formation, capital requirements and cost of money, flexibility in managing and decision making, government rules, liabilities, risk and management, and tax considerations. Specifically, ballroom dance becomes a metaphor to show the conflict between a cooperative society and the disappointment associated with life and our inability to force change. Fugard makes the point that everyone in the world is still struggling in ways to get along with one another and while it is not easy, it should not be a reason to not try to learn to dance in harmony with others and create a better world.
