Jack learned about several technologies through completing his school product. He used a DSLR camera to take photos for his magazine, and learned about how the camera works through taking photos with different shutter speeds and exposures. He used Photoshop to edit the photos, such as applying a monochrome filter and moving the subject. Finally, he used QuarkXPress to lay out his magazine pages, adding images, text with different fonts, sizes, colors and drop shadows. He changed images and layouts up until the final version.

2. Types of Technology That I Used
 DSLR Cameras

3. DSLR Cameras
 DSLR Cameras, or Digital Single-Lens Reflex
cameras, are very high quality cameras that I used
throughout the year. which at first I knew a very
miniscule amount about. I knew that the shutter
speed could be changed to allow less or more light
into the shot, but that was all.
 I began learning things such as how a photo is
actually taken on a DSLR. The shutter opens and
Light passes through the lens and strikes a mirror,
then the mirror reflects the light up to a focusing
screen. After that, light passes through the focusing
screen and enters a block of glass called a
pentaprism. Subsequently, the pentaprism reflects
the image so that you can see it in the viewfinder.
And then finally, When you take a photo, the mirror
flips up and a shutter opens that exposes the digital
sensor to light.

 After learning about DSLR cameras, we
then were told to use them for our
magazine photos. I changed things up for
the different photos, such as the shutter
speed and the exposure.
 With my photo shoot for my magazine
being at night, I had to change the
shutter speed to adapt to the very poor
natural lighting.

6. Photoshop
 Photoshop is the alteration of an image
using Photoshop software. Again I already
had an extremely small knowledge of
PhotoShop and photo editing, but still
nowhere near enough knowledge.
 Photoshop was used a lot in my
magazine, as I had to change the photos
that I had taken on my photoshoot to
make them applicable for my pages.

7. How I used Photoshop
 For my double page
spread, I had an image
of Matt my cover
model, and I decided to
change it up for the
Double page spread.
Sadly this image didn’t
make it to the final edit
of the double page
spread, but I still spent
a lot of time on editing
the image down. So I
began with this original

 And this was the edited
photo. For the image, I
used the Rule of
Thirds. The Rule of
Thirds is aligning a
subject with guidelines
and their intersection
points. Therefore I
moved Matt over onto
another one of the
intersection points as
this made the photo
look more appealing,
and I then added a
monochrome filter over
the image to make it
look more vintage and
“indie”

9. QuarkXPress
 And finally in the production of my magazine, I
used the QuarkXPress software.
 Quark is a very similar software to that of
Photoshop, but instead of only allowing image
editing, Quark allows the editing of images and
applying things such as drop shadows etc. Again
I knew very little about QuarkXPress, but my
knowledge grew over the course as I used Quark
more and more.
 I used QuarkXPress to add all of the text placed
onto my front cover, double page and contents
pages.
 I used multiple font styles, font sizes, text
colours and drop shadows to create the best
magazine possible for my target audience

10. How I used Quark
 I firstly started with my front cover
page. I began with the image that I
had taken and edited on Photoshop.
•Next, I added my Masthead
and slogan in the top left hand
corner
•I then added my main masthead of “Matt D:
‘Time for a New Leader’.
•I then added my final parts. The secondary
coverlines, barcode, price and date of
release.

11. How I
used
Quark
 For my other pages, my contents
and my double page spread, I used
the same styles. I started with the
original photshopped image, and
began to apply things all over the
page.
 For my double page spread, I had
one photo that I thought was
correct the entire time I was
creating my double page spread,
but at the very last second I
changed to another image taken
from my photo shoot. I thought this
was a very successful change as the
image worked a lot better with the
page itself; the natural lighting fade
helped the photo look as if the fade
had been added into the image, but
it was all natural fading

12. How I used Quark (Continued)
 I used many differen tools, such as the
spacing tool to add more spacing between
the letters, and furthermore the drop shadow
tool, which allows me to add a drop shadow
in behind the letters.
 For my pages, I stuck to 2 separate colour
schemes for my magazine. I stuck to a white
and cyan blue for the front cover and
contents, and then a white and red scheme
for the double page spread. This all helped
the magazine to link together, and not make
it seem as if the 3 different pages were all
separate pages.
