Essay on Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place
(Introduction): Throughout her novel, The Women of Brewster Place, Ms. Naylor emphasizes the
importance of sister hood by showing how the women are strengthened by their relationships with
one another and proving that men are not necessary to their survival or happiness.
Thesis: The strengthening of women through other women is illustrated by Mattie's role as a
daughter to Miss Eva, a sister to Etta Mae, and a mother to Lucielia.
PARA 2: Miss Eva Turner plays a vital role in Mattie's life by taking her in during her loneliness and
destitution and treating Mattie and Basil as if they are her own family.
PARA 3: The sisterhood between Mattie and Etta Mae is illustrated by each woman's willingness to

Lucielia was literally dying of grief and rage. "It is Mattie's intervention and her ability to place
Lucielia's grief in a historical context and to know it as one more instance of "murdered dreams" in a
long history of such murders that undergirds her life saving and healing intervention" (Aull, 2)
Mattie healed and renewed Lucielia physically and mentally. "Mattie magnificently wrestles Ciel,
dying of grief, back to life" (Gottlieb p.1484). Mattie took on the role of a mother when she nursed
Lucielia back to health. Mattie treated and nursed Lucielia "as if handling a newborn"(Naylor, 104).
Mattie's relationship with Basil teaches her valuable lessons that help her to be a more effective
mother figure to Lucielia. Mattie's mistake with Basil is she used him to fill a void. She loved the
fact that he was solely dependent on her. "My Bed hasn't been empty since Basil was born" (38).
Mattie spoiled Basil to the point he would always have to have his way. He knew his mother would
always be there for him. Because of that, he took advantage of her. It was hard for Mattie to watch
the turmoil and sadness Lucielia had to encounter in her love life. It was like watching her child
suffer. However, Mattie wasn't going to make the same mistake she made with Basil. Mattie let
Lucielia take control of her own life. She never told her what to do. She just listened and gave her
support her. Lucielia questioned

Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Sunset Boulevard, a classic black and white movie that displays what Hollywood actually consists
of. Directed by Billy Wilder an Austrian born, American filmmaker of sixty films. The movie is
almost 67 years old and when it was first released the movie was nominated for eleven Academy
Awards, ranked number twelve on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 best American films
in 1998, and worshipped by many critics. Although the movie was not released in my time, this
classic has definitely got me interested in movies similar to this love story with a crazed ending.

Most actors do not continue making films one after another until they die but Norma could not get
this into her head. She spent years writing her script to return to the big screen and was set on that
dream. Since Norma was obsessed with the goal of filming again it led her to become foolish about
how famous she actually was and her terrible script. Also a scary realization of having a chance of
ending up demented like Norma. The directors wanted to show us a alarming visual of what life
could be like for actors after their acting days were over.
I recommend this film for anybody that is interested in movies with the genre drama. The film refers
to many references to past Hollywood and screenwriters, so it would help if you know a little bit of
that background to have a better understanding to what the actors are saying. But I enjoyed the plot
twists, astounding acting, and shocking ending. I actually asked my friend to watch the film by
herself since the film was available on Netflix. I wanted to see a persons opinion on the

Marine Biology Application Essay
Gloria Steinem once said, "Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of
possibilities." Imagination and dreams can make anything possible, including me becoming a
marine biologist. Ever since I was five years old, i have dreamed of becoming a marine biologist.
My dad, stepmom, and me took a trip to Orlando, Florida and I was terrified of what was to come. I
didn't know it had the time, but now I realize that this one experience has shaped me into who I am
and what I love. In the summer of 2007, I found myself in the most extraordinary place I have ever
been. I walked into Discovery Cove and my jaw slammed against the floor. There were animals

felt something a strange feeling deep inside of me. I knew that one day, I this is where I would be.
One day I would help out. One day I would become a marine biologist. I began telling all my friends
and family that that is what I will become, and they all looked at me like I was a two–headed

knew I would prove them wrong. 8 years later, my family and I went back to Discovery Cove, and I
was still determined to become a marine biologist. I asked all around to see the trainers had done to

The TV Dinner
The TV dinner....taking the family away from the table!
The TV Dinner concept took hold in 1954 when Swanson's frozen meals appeared...they were a
welcome lifesaver for busy mothers and a delight for the entire family. The dinner was a
prepackaged frozen meal in an aluminum tray, packed inside a cardboard box, that could be heated
in the oven, and all ready to eat in just 25 minutes. Best news yet? The meal could be eaten out of
the same tray it was heated in! Yes, eaten WITHOUT a plate,
We won't kid you...there were quite a few people and companies instrumental in the concept of a
complete meal that need only to be heated before eating. While the frozen dinner's lineage can be
credited way back to 1923 when Clarence Birdseye invented a packing and flash–freezing of fresh
food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Company marketed the dinner like crazy using the relatively new cultural phenomenon of
television! The retail price of each dinner (marketed as a TV Dinner) was roughly about $1 each.
The company sold 10 million TV dinners in 1954, the first year of production.
Thomas was given a $100 raise and a bonus of $1,000 for his invention, and asked Swanson to
renegotiate his contract for a penny a dinner as long as he lived. A decision he later regretted. The
American Frozen Food Institute honored him in their "Frozen Food Hall of Fame" as the inventor of
the TV dinner and he secured a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where his handprints were
featured alongside a tray print.. His role as the inventor is disputed.
The original aluminum tray is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution, next to Fonzie's
jacket. So who really invented the TV dinner? It depends on your definition. But whatever the case,

Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as
well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is
that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable
actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and
Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the
infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn
this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant
setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic.
Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond)
which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in
her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis)
who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe
decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her
with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he
realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one

Craigslist Joe Monologue
Craigslist Joe" exhibited a variety of "interesting" linkage. Two particular scenes caught my
attention the most. When stopping in NYC, Joe stood with a woman named Fran. She came off a
differently than most previous linkage in the film, shaking Joe by surprise. When joe first entered
the small and cluttered apartment, Fran was swimming from a pull up bar and rambled about how it
is important to move. She later talked about how she tells herself she is not insane in means to
eventually believe she is indeed not insane. Fran was diagnosed with cancer, but denied surgery
because she believes the universe will heal her. She also used to be a star actress, appearing in films
such as Home Alone. Joe's reactions to this woman seemed truly pure in this scene, for she
unintentionally created an emotional appeal. Joe's original intent was to come to NYC to volunteer

While some acts of kindness created an emotional appeal, it is possible most of it was influenced by
the cameras in front of Joe's face, along with every person he came across with through linkage. For
example, at Joe's initial start, a man named Allen offered him a place to stay, but with some
discouragement. Allen told Joe "after a week and a half you will crack." As the cameras began to
keep following, Allen began a bit nicer and more sentimental once Joe began to talk about the
beauty of helping others. Allen began to agree, along with a change in body language, saying that
"people need to step outside of the box and be open to helping others...a helping hand." In Seattle,
where Joe said goodbye to his new friends who welcomed him into their American–Iranian home,
Joe exemplifies his thankfulness for the gesture and the older man looked directly into the camera,
smiled, and nodded his head. While this could have been a genuine "you're welcome" gesture, it
could be suspicious in the eyes of the

Sectional Garage Door Essay
Sectional Garage Door
Home owners are now considering the garage door as an important element in the overall façade of
the house. Not only should a garage door be functional, it also has to look good.
There are many garage door options available. In choosing the one for your garage, you will need to
consider durability, design, maintenance and cost. A popular choice among home owners is the
sectional garage door.
What is a Sectional Garage Door?
Sectional garage doors consist of large, separate panels, which are positioned parallel to the ceiling.
They open vertically going up, suspended just under the ceiling. This type of garage door is
typically composed of up to eight sections hinged together and held in position by brackets. This
mechanism allows the door to slide up and down.
How are Sectional Garage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because sectional doors can be easily fitted into any opening. Also, they typically don't take
up too much vertical space when opened. The doors don't swing out when opened. Instead, they
slide and curve upwards above the opening and into the ceiling.
Advantages and Disadvantages of a Sectional Garage Door
Sectional doors are considered the best option for driveways with limited spaces. You don't have to
move your car away from the garage when opening the door, as what happens when you have an
up–and–over type of garage door. This means you can park your vehicle close while waiting for the
garage door to open. When opened, sectional doors provide access to the entire drive–through height
and width, which make them great options for garage owners with large vehicles.
This type of garage door also offers flexibility in terms of materials used. You can choose materials
that provide the functionality you need. For instance, if you want ventilation in the garage, you can
opt for panels with vents. If you prefer additional lighting, panels made of glass can be a good

Research Paper On Gloria Steinem
Gloria Steinem was one of the most important leaders of the second wave of the women's rights
movement. As both an indirect and direct leader, she embodied her story by giving speeches and
writing books and articles to help empower women across the United States and beyond. As she
grew up in American society where sexism was present, she told an innovative story with visionary
elements to prove to women that they were more than what society said they were. Her strong and
feisty personality added to her success and I will argue that these factors along with her appearance
helped her to be a major player and the face of the women's rights movement.
Gloria Steinem grew up to be a widely known and loved leader of the women's rights movement,
however, it took her a long time to get there. Gloria was born on March 25th, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio.
Both of her parents, Ruth and Leo Steinem, had a significant impact on Gloria. Her mother gave her
the political and social beliefs she held as an adult. Ruth Steinem taught Gloria that all people are
equal and that it is important to understand the suffering people go through "because of their race, or
class, or religion" or as Gloria learned to add, "their sex". On the other hand, her father instilled in
her a love of life and adventure. Her love on the road stemmed from her father's irresponsibility that
caused the family to move around a lot. Fortunately, this love this allowed Gloria to be present in

A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr.
Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a
celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001
neo–noir movie Mulholland Dr. tells the story of a young starlet named Diane (or Betty, in Diane's
dream) who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned
for. After a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her
own life in her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma
and Diane suffer from mental health conditions and could not wake up from the illusion induced by
the mental disorder (Diane committed suicide as soon as she came back to reality). Their fantasies
about themselves and the film industry were not an imagined scenario that represents the realization
of their impossible desires, since their wish to enter (or re–enter) the industry was not totally
impossible; but rather, the fantasy allows them to desire.6 Norma's fantasy of still being wanted by
the industry leads to her going to Cecil B. DeMille's studio in real–life, wanting to work with him
again to produce her film Salomé. A better illustration of this idea is Diane's fantasy with her failed
audition, in which she found closure. In her dream, a Cowboy talked to the director of the film she
was auditioning for, telling him that "the rest of the cast can stay, that's up to you. But the

The only issue was the fact that technically she already was. My point about all of this, is the fact

either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks

Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma
Desmond had also become rather sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of
her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories which constantly
makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma
is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted
depiction of celebrity to audiences.
Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis,
is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without
Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and
conversely, without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her
materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually transgressive as well. He possesses
many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He
conforms to the reality where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma
Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who forfeited his personal
happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing,

Sunset Boulevard Movie Essay
Sunset Boulevard is a movie that needs no introduction, but to keep to proper essay format, I will
give it one anyways. This 1950 classic is a staple in the book of Billy Wilder's film making genius.
Directed and written in part by Wilder, this film not only utilized Billy's classic comedy–noir charm,
but paired him with the incredible John Seitz, and Franz Waxman. William Holden and Gloria
Swanson do a marvelous job at capturing the depth of their characters, and embody the style of
everything that makes 50's Hollywood incredible. But the combination of the three aforementioned
men make for a hard hitting behind the scenes team, one that near outshines the actors themselves.
This being the only film that Wilder made which focused on film–making as a topic in its fictional
story arc; he made a few key decisions which made this a great movie. Wilder chose to allow the
setting to portray itself. While this may be an obvious choice for a movie about Hollywood, using
real locations keeps the setting alive. Wilder also had many actors and directors portray themselves.
This creates a very organic setting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nominated for seven academy awards for his work in cinematography, and propelled by Wilder's
film noir style, we see the excellent use of lighting and camera work that is almost lost on modern
cinema. The more sinister characters are silhouetted, obscured by clouds of their own cigarette
smoke, or viewed from a slightly upward angle, as to make them appear looming and threatening.
The protagonist of our film is always well lit, shot from a level surface, and is often wholly visible
in every frame he inhabits. Less serious and goofy characters often take up very small portions of
the screen, and are shot on a downward angle, as if to make us literally look down upon them. As
important as the use of angles with characters are, the score to the film is a character all its own.
Franz Waxman is the mastermind behind this very

Sunset Boulevard (Wilder 1950) explores the intermingling of public and private realms, puncturing
the illusion of the former and unveiling the grim and often disturbing reality of the latter. By delving
into the personal delusions of its characters and showing the devastation caused by disrupting those
fantasies, the film provides not only a commentary on the industry of which it is a product but also a
shared anxiety about the corrupting influence of external perception. Narrated by a dead man,
centering on a recluse tortured by her own former stardom, and concerning a once–promising

When Norma asserts her self–worth, she does so surrounded by images of herself. "I am big," she
proclaims, with a thousand Norma Desmonds staring back at the camera from photographs, posters,
and artistic renditions of the once famous face. "It's the pictures that got small." This convolution of
reality, a reversal that gives Desmond the illusion of both control and continued adoration by
nonexistent fans, provides the foundation for all her more severe misperceptions. As long as it is the
cinema itself that has lost its appeal and not the former silent film star, a change of fates or
Desmond's own gracious compromise have the potential to restore her former glory. As she
ultimately confesses, Norma feels that she left the spotlight (not the other way around) and that it
has been waiting for her ever since. A belief that her seclusion is voluntary allows Desmond to avoid
the finality of her fall from grace. The relationship between Joe Gillis and Norma Desmond also
holds close corporeal ties to the protagonist's material wealth and visual relationship with
Desmond's mansion. Joe's car, the symbol of masculinity and independence, embodies the man's
desperation and his initial motivations for accepting a job with Norma. As Joe admits, the loss of his

Second- Wave Feminism Essay
History 2112 Second–Wave Feminism Towards the end of the twentieth century, feminist women in
America faced an underlying conflict to find their purpose and true meaning in life. "Is this all?"
was often a question whose answer was sought after by numerous women reaching deeper into their
minds and souls to find what was missing from their life. The ideal second–wave feminist was
defined as a women who puts all of her time into cleaning her home, loving her husband, and caring

Magazine became a great relief to all feminists by giving them a sense of self–determination and

subjection and loneliness. These emotions led them to feeling ashamed of themselves due to the
idealistic image of feminists that society felt was so appropriate. "She was so ashamed to admit her

and rather large step towards understanding feminist women at this time was the formation of rap

structured meetings that allowed women to openly engage in one another's thoughts, feelings, and

Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis
Billy Wilder's famous and well known film called Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece for the ages.
Even though it is in black and white, don't think it isn't good. This film has so many twist and turns,
the audience doesn't know what's going to happen next (even though you know the Writer in the
movie is going to die because of the flash back). I thought the movie was interesting with the
beginning of the film when they start out with the dead man floating motionless in the pool as police
officers rush to the senses to understand what had happened to the dead movie writer. Also, later in
the film that really interested me that was never answered in the film was the funeral for the dead
ape and how it had anything to do with the plot of the movie.
Sunset Boulevard is a film about a forgotten, living in her own world of being an old silent star
crushed by new films with sound in her enormous mansion with just herself and her butler. As she
just sits inside her house watching her old films, dreaming of her comeback and how it would bring
her back as being the biggest star on hollywood. But the film isn't just a story about an
unremembered famous actress, it's also a story about love, and this love theme helps makes the film
seem more interesting instead of a boring movie about an old actress living in her glory days. Gloria

Essay about Consumer Appeal
Consumer Appeal
Advertisers of today have strategically combined commercials and television shows in order to sell
products. Gloria Steinem discusses a similar idea in her article, "Sex, Lies, and
Advertising." She repeatedly demonstrates how advertisements, particularly in magazines, are
complementary to the articles around them. In the same manner, so are commercials to television
programs.
They are both aimed at the same groups or types of people, such as sex, age, gender, etc.
Many times, the time of day or day of the week a show is aired has a lot to do with the types of
viewers the program will attract. Thus, the types of commercials will also differ. On ... Show more

This leaves a majority of the older crowds watching the program.
According to Gloria Steinem, the target of the television show will be the same as that of the
commercials. This proved to be true with "Profiler" and its commercials. There were a
total of twenty commercials aired. They included and Allstate Insurance ad, a number of car dealers
and promotions, chewing gum, beauty products, medicine, food, and television satellites. Most of
them had female voice–overs with predominantly white actors and/or actresses. The actors and/or
actresses were also good–looking, thin, and of high– to medium–status.
In Steinem's terms, and as mentioned by Cayo Gamber, an advertisement is generally linked to the
article, or in this case, the program. The show is seen as a "complementary copy" for the
commercials; because it included certain accessories to a person in the same life–style as the
characters in the program.
The cars advertisements, in particular, were at times found in the show.
However, the other products weren't really enforced by the program. Above all, the program did
help maintain the intended target interested and tuned in to that specific channel.

from hot, home–cooked dinners to meals birthed from bags and boxes was largely spurred by
targeted advertising due to political and social context. During World War II, for example, five
million women flooded into the workforce, filling the jobs left by men heeding their country's draft
for the army. When these soldiers returned, most women were forced to leave their work to return to
the home. But having tasted freedom, women yearned for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another kind of mass distribution, television, became a major source for these industries to reach
out to the public. How did mass production and targeted advertising shape the development of the
fast food and processed food industries in America in the 1950s and 1960s? This question is
extremely significant because investigation provides insight on the roots of the American consumer
culture and growing conformity that mark our country today. It is also fascinating to understand the
political and social impetuses behind the mass economy that gave rise to new corporations.
Revealing the inspirations and inventions that spawned a revolution in the American diet can help us
understand the multifaceted forces that created changes in our society.
The Rise of Fast and Processed Food The 1950s and 1960s were decades full of technological
innovation. One of the main reasons why fast food and processed food experienced such success
was the efficiency that came with them. The revolution in the American diet was largely due to the
popularity of the fast and processed food among housewives, who could now serve supposedly
nutritious meals in minutes. Therefore, women, who took care of most of the shopping, were
targeted by advertisements promising them the ability to maintain the home and still have time for
other activities. As "over 23 million American women, or 36 percent of all women, had jobs

Essay on Gloria Naylor's Mama Day
Gloria Naylor's Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor's 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are multiple
standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as
well as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully
clarifies many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to
answer them based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. The multiplicity of perspectives
in Gloria Naylor's Mama Day is embodied in the legend of Sapphira Wade and the dynamics
between logic and the supernatural and between George and Cocoa.
Sapphira Wade is a character that Naylor uses as a tool ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The descendents of Sapphira all received deeds to pieces of land in Willow Springs in 1823. How
the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because
different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from
generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira "smothered Bascombe Wade in his very
bed," while others say she "persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves
every inch of land in Willow Springs" and "poisoned him for his trouble" (Naylor 3). These different
interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase "18 & 23" as a slang
term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it
synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many
views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open–mindedness in
reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open–mindedness by providing the
reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day's encounter with
Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day, who is known to have miraculous healing
abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives Bernice pumpkin seeds and puts her
under the impression that they are "magic seeds" (Naylor 96). This gives Bernice time to build

Sunset Howard Dishonesty Quotes
Sunset Boulevard is a film noir movie that was released in 1950. When looked at, the main character
Joe Gillis, portrayed by William Holden, can be seen as an anti–hero. Joe shows his anti–heroic
behavior in many ways. For example, he is dishonest, he uses the people around him, and he also is
only focused on elevating himself. One of the many examples of the dishonesty of Joe. One of the
most notable examples of his is when he meets Norma Desmond, portrayed by Gloria Swanson. He
starts out being noble by telling her that she should rethink let him look over the script, however, he
quickly becomes crooked. He tells her falsehoods to try and extort money out of her. This
transforms into him taking advantage of the situation.
He starts by taking advantage of Norma as the movie continues. Again, Joe starts being somewhat
noble by trying to tell Norma that he does not need to move into the house but stay at his apartment.
But, this changes when Norma tells him that everything has been paid for. He quickly drops the
argument and starts to live there. He also lets her buy him fancy suits and gifts without much if any
argument. It can also be seen that he is more concerned about the money and his elevating status ...

Women 's Rights Of The Civil Rights Movement
Decades after the National Women's Party pushed for the passage of their proposed Equal Rights
Amendment, feminists of the 1960s and 70s rallied once again for this change in the Constitution.
The amendment, simply stating that, "Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the
United States or any State on account of sex," quickly gained popularity among activists in the
1970s. This support was not surprising, as this decade was a time of great change and protest.
Feminist felt that just as African Americans were gaining civil rights, women, too, should be
considered as equals to their counterparts. Women Right's leaders such as Alice Paul and Gloria
Steinem pushed for the passage of such major legislation. With support from Women's Right's
groups such as the National Organization of Women, the amendment quickly made its' way to
Congress. The bill passed first in the House of Representatives in 1970, and then two years later, it
passed in the Senate. As all amendments are passed, the votes then continued into the states. In order
to be added to the constitution, the ERA needed to gain the support of thirty–eight states. Within one
year, twenty–two states ratified the amendment. The radical pace of the passage was promising and
activists were certain that in the seven–year time span Congress allotted for state ratification, the bill
would be passed. Momentum slowed, however, when organized opposition came from an unlikely
source. Phyllis Schlafly led a

A Short Story : A Story?
" I can't believe that there are still this many people on the road, this late at night," said Chad, "
yeah" replied Chad's twin sister Lily. Chad and Lily were driving back to their apartment, from
Northern Arizona University from a late practice. When all of a sudden they heard a screeching of
tires, and a blazing of yellow lights, right before they lurched forward and heard an eerie whisper
that said "only at 11:11 must this end" They had just been rear–ended. " Chad" Lily managed to
croak. "Chad are you alright..." " Yeah, Yeah I'm okay... are you okay?" Chad replied. Both twins
stared deep into each other's eyes and asked one another if they heard the mysterious whisper.
Indeed they told each other they did. Carefully getting out of the car Chad and Lily inspected the
damage and saw that the other person had fled the scene of the accident. While Lily was on the
phone with the police, Chad thought about something he had not told Lily when they had been hit.
*** 1 week later: "Hey Lily" Chad yelled from the kitchen in their apartment, getting a late night
snack as usual. "Yeah..." Lily answered "Are you still working on that paper?" Chad said as he

where she was writing her paper. 11:11 pm... "Ughh... seriously, the power has to go out right now!"
Lily sighed. "I'll go see if we have any candles," Chad said. As Chad was walking over to the closet

Sunset Boulevard Essay
A fragment of life in Hollywood is being spread over the screen of the Music Hall in Sunset
Boulevard. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful
circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful
scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder (with an aid from D. M. Marshman, Jr.) have
composed an effective story of the aspirations and disappointments that join to make life in the
cardboard city so entrancing to the outside world.
Sunset Boulevard is in no way, shape or form an adjusted story of Hollywood, past or present. Be
that as it may it is such a cunning compound of truth and legend–and is so lavishly fragrant of the
past, yet so contemporaneous–that it apparently talks with extraordinary power. Sunset Boulevard is
that uncommon mix of impactful composition, master acting, excellent course, and inconspicuously
aesthetic photography which rapidly does magic over a crowd of people and holds it excited to a
shattering peak.
Gloria Swanson was persuaded out of long retirement to depict the woeful, overlooked film
monarch, Norma Desmond, and now it can be said that it is endless that any other individual may
have been considered for the part. As the rich, boastful relic urgently longing to hear again the
approvals of the swarm, Miss Swanson commands the picture. Indeed in those few scenes when she
is not on–screen her vicinity is felt like the overwhelming fragrance of tuberoses

this signifies strength and solidarity. The third essential element highlighted is the filter of the
picture, the filter being black and white shows unity as human beings and every race. The picture
represents three main topics which are women rights, strength and unity
The first important detail of the Gloria Steinem picture is the one that stands out the most, the two
women. This iconic photograph is of both Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes with their
fist in the air while staring into the camera. Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman were both feminist
activist so seeing both in this photograph portrays them as standing up for women's rights and
equality. Around when Gloria began attempting to make an impact towards feminism was around
the 1960s. This was a time where women were not seen as equal to men or had as many
opportunities. There was an expectation of women that they were to be stay at home mothers and
take care of their children and husband as shown in this article about women barriers in the 60s "A
woman was expected to follow one path: to marry in her early 20s, start a family quickly, and devote
her life to homemaking". Gloria Steinem saw these expectations and

Descriptive Essay About Home
I stood for a second and took a deep breath of fresh air. The crisp, untouched air flowed as I inhaled
the new environment. Too much air began to drift towards me because I was the only one there. It
seemed as if everything around me was empty yet, I knew there were others around. It was a surreal
moment, nothing but my thoughts and my family populated the airport. As we slowly wandered to
the car, the quiet and serene area engulfed us. We remained silent the entire journey to the car; we
were too shocked about moving to Michigan to talk. Clear droplets slowly began to fall on the
window pane. Each one becoming more and more aggressive and mesmerizing. The loop of the
pitter–patter was all I could hear even though my parents were making small talk. In Mexico, I
would watch all the people on the street, all the stores and billboard signs and tall buildings. My
favorite thing to watch were the lights on a car when it was raining, but now no one would stay
close enough to see their lights though the backseat window. My dad was excited that we had come
"home", but it wasn't home anymore. It's just where we had once lived and where my family was.
People always say that your home is your family, but that's just a cutesy fib they put on cooking
shows to make you love your family. The smooth roads and empty streets, are not my home. They
are this weird place that feels like a pile of dirt. It's not very exciting or rare. You can look through it

Summary Of The Hollywood Machine : Equations To Downfall...
The Hollywood Machine: Equations to Downfall in Sunset Boulevard The film industry operates in
a continuous cycle, searching for the newest and best pieces to make their movies creative,
interesting, and marketable. Historically, the film industry attempts to follow a set structure in an
attempt towards success in such a volatile market, however, this approach creates a system much
like that of Ford's Model–T production line, invented in the 1910s, which involved each worker on
the line doing a single job. Only a few years later, during the 1920s and 1940s, the film industry
showed that they adopted a similar approach to their industry, with each person–actor, director,
producer, writer, etc.–performing a distinct role. In the late 1920s, as Hollywood transitioned from
silent films to "talkies", actors and actresses were met with the challenge of adapting to a new role
and many of them no longer fit the role required by the growing Hollywood machine. The film
Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950) explores and critiques the landscape of the hierarchy and
harsh realities of Hollywood. In the same vein as many films of the film noir style, the mood of
pessimism and fatalism reflected in the form parallels the reality of many people in Hollywood
during the 1900s. It is unsurprising that Wilder–in creating Sunset Boulevard– chose film noir to
exhibit the cynicism and despair of those mistreated and thrown away by the film industry. In his
essay "Notes on Film Noir", author Paul

Compare And Contrast Norma Rae And Erin Brockovich
In "Norma Rae" (Ritt 1979), we see that Norma Rae works in a textile company and begins to get
involved with the labor union. She started to go against her boss and watched people get sick and
bury her own father. One thing I noticed was when the union organizers came to Reuben and told
him that he needed to get rid of Norma Rae because she had three children out of wedlock and she
was thought to be a prostitute. In the film, "Erin Brockovich" (Soderbergh 2000) we see how people
though of her as a bad image for the company because of how she dressed. Both protagonists in
"Norma Rae" and "Erin Brockovich" were talked down upon because of how they dressed/looked
and their past love life. In the poem, "The Low Road" (Piercy 1980) it starts with

Implicit ideas and images presented throughout the movie. The setting takes place near Hollywood,
California early 1950's, while the plot duration takes place only a few short months from when Joe

An explicit motif that was introduced was Norma's 1929 Isotta–Fraschini car. Which is a widely
desired car that even the studios wanted to use it in a movie. The car represents how as time goes by
nonliving items gain value and people like Norma loose value to others like how the directors don't
want to have old actors in new movies but want old cars in new movies. A symbol in the movie is
the implicit and explicit pictures of Gloria Swanson in her younger days as an actress in real life.
The symbol is that Norma can not get over her past accomplishments to live in the present day. Her
glorifications in life is only of her movies now that she is out off the business, the pictures are only
there to remind her of those days and retrospect make her feel less good about herself as a person
and actress. She still thinks people remember her by sending her fan mail but in turn that is only her
butler max sending her them so she has something to be happy about. The third symbol is the
graves, which represent her second and third husbands which like joe had enough of her crazy
obsession with her past and wanted to leave but they were the only ones to keep her happy so she
killed them when they threated to leave her so they could always be with her. Joe noticed them in
the beginning in the movie with a empty grave beside them unknown to Joe that that grave as for the
monkey at the time but in a few short months when he would want to leave her a grave for him

Sunset Boulevard And Singing In The Rain
Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Singing in the Rain (1952) both use the transitions from silent to
sound movies to help drive the narrative. Director Billy Wilder's film, Sunset Boulevard and Gene
Kelly and Stanley Donen's Singing in the Rain utilize camera movements and sound to advance the

Sunset Boulevard follows an unsuccessful screenwriter, Joe Gillis (William Holden), whom a past
movie star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), hires to help her return to the big screen. Police find
the body of Joe Gillis in a swimming pool. In a flashback, Joe explains events that happen prior to

When a group of men try to repossess Joes car, Joe escapes by hiding the car in a deserted mansion.

How does Sunset Boulevard represent the Hollywood Studio...
Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder in 1950 is based on how Norma Desmond, a huge
Hollywood star, deals with her fall from fame. The film explores the fantasy world in which Norma
is living in and the complex relationship between her and small time writer Joe Gillis, which leads to
his death. Sunset Boulevard is seen as lifting the 'face' of the Hollywood Studio System to reveal the
truth behind the organisation. During the time the film was released in the 1950s and 60s, audiences
started to see the demise of Hollywood as cinema going began to decline and the fierce competition
of television almost proved too much for the well established system. Throughout this essay I will

The film's main focus largely represents the Hollywood star system to which Norma Desmond is a
victim of. The film particularly highlights the fantasy world in which Norma lives in, the world
where she is the 'greatest star' (Norma Desmond, Sunset Boulevard, 1950). Sunset Boulevard steps
into Norma's mixed up world where hundreds of photos of herself clutter her crumbling mansion
and where she watches herself on screen on a weekly basis. The crumbling and deteriorating
mansion could be seen as a metaphor for Norma's fall from stardom, the collapse of her career. The
focus of Norma's fame is a recurring theme throughout the film that is referenced in order to
emphasise the extent to which fame has affected Norma and her life. When Norma decides to talk to
Cecil DeMille about her script the young security guard questions her by saying 'Norma, who?' as
the younger generation are unlikely to have heard of the actress. This further emphasises the harsh
reality of fame and in particular, Hollywood, as new actors and actresses are constantly churned out
to appeal to the audiences needs for the new Hollywood 'star'. Besides the main focus of the star
system, other representations of the studio system are also apparent within the film, for example
when Joe's thoughts are expressed

Analysis Of Breaking The Fourth Wall
The next part of analysis is breaking of the fourth wall. The Office uses this technique often. One of
the ways a character can break the fourth wall is by using it as an introduction. In the first episode of
The Office each character went into an interview and it previewed what their character would be
like ("Pilot"). Another way of using this technique is to share their thoughts and emotions. Jim
would explain how he has feelings for Pam, but unfortunately she was engaged to someone else
("Gay Witch Hunt"). Nonverbal expression was a technique Jim used a lot in the show. When he
worked at the Stamford branch, the office workers there made fun of Jim for always smiling and
looking into the camera ("Gay Witch Hunt"). The Office had a creative take on this technique. In the
last episode, the show hosted a questionnaire for fans to come in ask them whatever they wanted
("Finale"). This is unique for situation comedies because it blurs the lines of the fourth wall.
Part of the reason fans love The Office is because of the relatable or unique characters. Michael
Scott is the regional manager and he can tend to be ignorant, but he still tries to connect with his
employees. In the first episode ever, the viewer gets a taste of these qualities. Michael says he is the
best boss ever and even bought a mug for himself that says "best boss ever" ("Pilot"). In season five,
Michael is on Skype with Pam, who was the old receptionist, and shows her the new receptionist

Sunset Boulevard Themes
Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) is a uniquely crafted film that provides analytical insight, as
well critical underlying themes that focus on the very industry it was born from. The film itself is a
commentary of an evolving 1950's Hollywood, that used a sense of realism and irony not seen by
other films of its time (TCM). These themes are displayed practically flawlessly through clever and
entertaining use of of narration elements, motifs, and whimsical humor. From the very first scene,
the viewer's attention is grasped by a brilliant and engaging scene of foreshadowing. Never does the

Throughout his work in the film industry, he gained high success in collaborations with two other
talented screenwriters and producers. Their names were Charles Brackett and I.A.L. Diamond.
Wilder and bracket co–wrote many of Wilder's films including Sunset Boulevard. When speaking on
his inspiration for the film in an interview with Vanity Fair, he cited that, "I wanted to make things a
little harder for myself, I wanted to do that thing which never quite works–a picture about
Hollywood" (Vanity Fair). At first Wilder and Bracket wanted to make the film a comedy and
envisioned the film as a celebrated comeback of a has–been silent film queen (Wilder, B). Though
the two eventually choose a semi–darker path for the film revolving around the plot we know today
and its suggestive commentary on the industry. In fear of censorship from the Paramount studios,
Wilder and Brackett made a phony working title for the film to throw off any overseers, accordingly
titled, A Can of Beans. In the film Wilder strived to give an accurate and realistic portrayal of what
he believed to be 1950's Hollywood. Though this venture was an entirely different experience for
Wilder, for he was not just writing another scrip. He was writing about an industry of which he
worked and lived in. The main character even carrying the same occupation as he did. Knowing this,

My eating habits! When I bring lunch to school, all of the people in the Cohort (even the

  • 3. Essay on Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place (Introduction): Throughout her novel, The Women of Brewster Place, Ms. Naylor emphasizes the importance of sister hood by showing how the women are strengthened by their relationships with one another and proving that men are not necessary to their survival or happiness. Thesis: The strengthening of women through other women is illustrated by Mattie's role as a daughter to Miss Eva, a sister to Etta Mae, and a mother to Lucielia. PARA 2: Miss Eva Turner plays a vital role in Mattie's life by taking her in during her loneliness and destitution and treating Mattie and Basil as if they are her own family. PARA 3: The sisterhood between Mattie and Etta Mae is illustrated by each woman's willingness to help the other in through their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lucielia was literally dying of grief and rage. "It is Mattie's intervention and her ability to place Lucielia's grief in a historical context and to know it as one more instance of "murdered dreams" in a long history of such murders that undergirds her life saving and healing intervention" (Aull, 2) Mattie healed and renewed Lucielia physically and mentally. "Mattie magnificently wrestles Ciel, dying of grief, back to life" (Gottlieb p.1484). Mattie took on the role of a mother when she nursed Lucielia back to health. Mattie treated and nursed Lucielia "as if handling a newborn"(Naylor, 104). Mattie's relationship with Basil teaches her valuable lessons that help her to be a more effective mother figure to Lucielia. Mattie's mistake with Basil is she used him to fill a void. She loved the fact that he was solely dependent on her. "My Bed hasn't been empty since Basil was born" (38). Mattie spoiled Basil to the point he would always have to have his way. He knew his mother would always be there for him. Because of that, he took advantage of her. It was hard for Mattie to watch the turmoil and sadness Lucielia had to encounter in her love life. It was like watching her child suffer. However, Mattie wasn't going to make the same mistake she made with Basil. Mattie let Lucielia take control of her own life. She never told her what to do. She just listened and gave her support her. Lucielia questioned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sunset Boulevard Movie Analysis Nuntida Nuampatom Mr. Kastor AMH 2020 US History II 04 September 2016 Sunset Boulevard (1950) Sunset Boulevard, a classic black and white movie that displays what Hollywood actually consists of. Directed by Billy Wilder an Austrian born, American filmmaker of sixty films. The movie is almost 67 years old and when it was first released the movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, ranked number twelve on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 best American films in 1998, and worshipped by many critics. Although the movie was not released in my time, this classic has definitely got me interested in movies similar to this love story with a crazed ending. Billy Wilder always wondered what happened to most of the former stars from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most actors do not continue making films one after another until they die but Norma could not get this into her head. She spent years writing her script to return to the big screen and was set on that dream. Since Norma was obsessed with the goal of filming again it led her to become foolish about how famous she actually was and her terrible script. Also a scary realization of having a chance of ending up demented like Norma. The directors wanted to show us a alarming visual of what life could be like for actors after their acting days were over. I recommend this film for anybody that is interested in movies with the genre drama. The film refers to many references to past Hollywood and screenwriters, so it would help if you know a little bit of that background to have a better understanding to what the actors are saying. But I enjoyed the plot twists, astounding acting, and shocking ending. I actually asked my friend to watch the film by herself since the film was available on Netflix. • 7. Marine Biology Application Essay Gloria Steinem once said, "Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities." Imagination and dreams can make anything possible, including me becoming a marine biologist. Ever since I was five years old, i have dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. My dad, stepmom, and me took a trip to Orlando, Florida and I was terrified of what was to come. I didn't know it had the time, but now I realize that this one experience has shaped me into who I am and what I love. In the summer of 2007, I found myself in the most extraordinary place I have ever been. I walked into Discovery Cove and my jaw slammed against the floor. There were animals happily playing everywhere. The summer breeze danced around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Make sure you help out as much as you can, because every little deed that you do, even if it is the smallest of things, it is very important to every sea creature." As I looked back at the dolphin, I felt something a strange feeling deep inside of me. I knew that one day, I this is where I would be. One day I would help out. One day I would become a marine biologist. I began telling all my friends and family that that is what I will become, and they all looked at me like I was a two–headed monster. They thought I was crazy and would forget about my dream by tomorrow morning, but I knew I would prove them wrong. 8 years later, my family and I went back to Discovery Cove, and I was still determined to become a marine biologist. I asked all around to see the trainers had done to get to work here and what they did to accomplish it. Clara, one of my trainers said, "Well the biggest thing you have to worry about is wanting it. • 9. The TV Dinner The TV dinner....taking the family away from the table! The TV Dinner concept took hold in 1954 when Swanson's frozen meals appeared...they were a welcome lifesaver for busy mothers and a delight for the entire family. The dinner was a prepackaged frozen meal in an aluminum tray, packed inside a cardboard box, that could be heated in the oven, and all ready to eat in just 25 minutes. Best news yet? The meal could be eaten out of the same tray it was heated in! Yes, eaten WITHOUT a plate, We won't kid you...there were quite a few people and companies instrumental in the concept of a complete meal that need only to be heated before eating. While the frozen dinner's lineage can be credited way back to 1923 when Clarence Birdseye invented a packing and flash–freezing of fresh food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Company marketed the dinner like crazy using the relatively new cultural phenomenon of television! The retail price of each dinner (marketed as a TV Dinner) was roughly about $1 each. The company sold 10 million TV dinners in 1954, the first year of production. Thomas was given a $100 raise and a bonus of $1,000 for his invention, and asked Swanson to renegotiate his contract for a penny a dinner as long as he lived. A decision he later regretted. The American Frozen Food Institute honored him in their "Frozen Food Hall of Fame" as the inventor of the TV dinner and he secured a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where his handprints were featured alongside a tray print.. His role as the inventor is disputed. The original aluminum tray is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution, next to Fonzie's jacket. So who really invented the TV dinner? • 11. Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic. Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond) which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis) who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one another, though for much different ... When stopping in NYC, Joe stood with a woman named Fran. She came off a differently than most previous linkage in the film, shaking Joe by surprise. When joe first entered the small and cluttered apartment, Fran was swimming from a pull up bar and rambled about how it is important to move. She later talked about how she tells herself she is not insane in means to eventually believe she is indeed not insane. Fran was diagnosed with cancer, but denied surgery because she believes the universe will heal her. She also used to be a star actress, appearing in films such as Home Alone. Joe's reactions to this woman seemed truly pure in this scene, for she unintentionally created an emotional appeal. Joe's original intent was to come to NYC to volunteer for Fran ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While some acts of kindness created an emotional appeal, it is possible most of it was influenced by the cameras in front of Joe's face, along with every person he came across with through linkage. For example, at Joe's initial start, a man named Allen offered him a place to stay, but with some discouragement. Allen told Joe "after a week and a half you will crack." As the cameras began to keep following, Allen began a bit nicer and more sentimental once Joe began to talk about the beauty of helping others. Allen began to agree, along with a change in body language, saying that "people need to step outside of the box and be open to helping others...a helping hand." In Seattle, where Joe said goodbye to his new friends who welcomed him into their American–Iranian home, Joe exemplifies his thankfulness for the gesture and the older man looked directly into the camera, smiled, and nodded his head. Not only should a garage door be functional, it also has to look good. There are many garage door options available. In choosing the one for your garage, you will need to consider durability, design, maintenance and cost. A popular choice among home owners is the sectional garage door. What is a Sectional Garage Door? Sectional garage doors consist of large, separate panels, which are positioned parallel to the ceiling. You don't have to move your car away from the garage when opening the door, as what happens when you have an up–and–over type of garage door. • 17. Research Paper On Gloria Steinem Gloria Steinem was one of the most important leaders of the second wave of the women's rights movement. As both an indirect and direct leader, she embodied her story by giving speeches and writing books and articles to help empower women across the United States and beyond. As she grew up in American society where sexism was present, she told an innovative story with visionary elements to prove to women that they were more than what society said they were. Her strong and feisty personality added to her success and I will argue that these factors along with her appearance helped her to be a major player and the face of the women's rights movement. Gloria Steinem grew up to be a widely known and loved leader of the women's rights movement, however, it took her a long time to get there. Gloria was born on March 25th, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio. Both of her parents, Ruth and Leo Steinem, had a significant impact on Gloria. Her mother gave her the political and social beliefs she held as an adult. Ruth Steinem taught Gloria that all people are equal and that it is important to understand the suffering people go through "because of their race, or class, or religion" or as Gloria learned to add, "their sex". On the other hand, her father instilled in her a love of life and adventure. Her love on the road stemmed from her father's irresponsibility that caused the family to move around a lot. • 19. A Comparison Of The Film Mulholland Dr. Sunset Boulevard was one of the first films to cover the gray area between glory and the fall of a celebrity, but not the only one. Borrowing many plot points from this film, a lesser known 2001 neo–noir movie Mulholland Dr. tells the story of a young starlet named Diane (or Betty, in Diane's dream) who orders the killing of her girlfriend Camilla (or Rita), who got the role Diane auditioned for. After a series of dreams and illusions, crushed by the weight of truth and guilt, Diane takes her own life in her apartment. There are many similarities shared between the two films as both Norma and Diane suffer from mental health conditions and could not wake up from the illusion induced by the mental disorder (Diane committed suicide as soon as she came back to reality). Their fantasies about themselves and the film industry were not an imagined scenario that represents the realization of their impossible desires, since their wish to enter (or re–enter) the industry was not totally impossible; but rather, the fantasy allows them to desire.6 Norma's fantasy of still being wanted by the industry leads to her going to Cecil B. DeMille's studio in real–life, wanting to work with him again to produce her film Salomé. A better illustration of this idea is Diane's fantasy with her failed audition, in which she found closure. In her dream, a Cowboy talked to the director of the film she was auditioning for, telling him that "the rest of the cast can stay, that's up to you. But the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen, movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images – either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks celebrity in a broad spectrum. This 1950 classic is a staple in the book of Billy Wilder's film making genius. Directed and written in part by Wilder, this film not only utilized Billy's classic comedy–noir charm, but paired him with the incredible John Seitz, and Franz Waxman. William Holden and Gloria Swanson do a marvelous job at capturing the depth of their characters, and embody the style of everything that makes 50's Hollywood incredible. But the combination of the three aforementioned men make for a hard hitting behind the scenes team, one that near outshines the actors themselves. This being the only film that Wilder made which focused on film–making as a topic in its fictional story arc; he made a few key decisions which made this a great movie. This convolution of reality, a reversal that gives Desmond the illusion of both control and continued adoration by nonexistent fans, provides the foundation for all her more severe misperceptions. • 33. Sunset Boulevard Film Analysis Billy Wilder's famous and well known film called Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece for the ages. Even though it is in black and white, don't think it isn't good. This film has so many twist and turns, the audience doesn't know what's going to happen next (even though you know the Writer in the movie is going to die because of the flash back). I thought the movie was interesting with the beginning of the film when they start out with the dead man floating motionless in the pool as police officers rush to the senses to understand what had happened to the dead movie writer. Also, later in the film that really interested me that was never answered in the film was the funeral for the dead ape and how it had anything to do with the plot of the movie. Yet, only sixty–five years ago or so, most of the United States had never even heard of a drive–through lane. The gigantic shift from hot, home–cooked dinners to meals birthed from bags and boxes was largely spurred by targeted advertising due to political and social context. How did mass production and targeted advertising shape the development of the fast food and processed food industries in America in the 1950s and 1960s? This question is extremely significant because investigation provides insight on the roots of the American consumer culture and growing conformity that mark our country today. It is also fascinating to understand the political and social impetuses behind the mass economy that gave rise to new corporations. Revealing the inspirations and inventions that spawned a revolution in the American diet can help us understand the multifaceted forces that created changes in our society. The Rise of Fast and Processed Food The 1950s and 1960s were decades full of technological innovation. One of the main reasons why fast food and processed food experienced such success was the efficiency that came with them. The revolution in the American diet was largely due to the popularity of the fast and processed food among housewives, who could now serve supposedly nutritious meals in minutes. How the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira "smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed," while others say she "persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs" and "poisoned him for his trouble" (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase "18 & 23" as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open–mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open–mindedness by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day's encounter with Bernice. Women 's Rights Of The Civil Rights Movement Decades after the National Women's Party pushed for the passage of their proposed Equal Rights Amendment, feminists of the 1960s and 70s rallied once again for this change in the Constitution. The amendment, simply stating that, "Equality of rights under the law shall not be abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex," quickly gained popularity among activists in the 1970s. This support was not surprising, as this decade was a time of great change and protest. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder (with an aid from D. • 53. Summary Of The Hollywood Machine : Equations To Downfall... The Hollywood Machine: Equations to Downfall in Sunset Boulevard The film industry operates in a continuous cycle, searching for the newest and best pieces to make their movies creative, interesting, and marketable. Historically, the film industry attempts to follow a set structure in an attempt towards success in such a volatile market, however, this approach creates a system much like that of Ford's Model–T production line, invented in the 1910s, which involved each worker on the line doing a single job. Only a few years later, during the 1920s and 1940s, the film industry showed that they adopted a similar approach to their industry, with each person–actor, director, producer, writer, etc.–performing a distinct role. In the late 1920s, as Hollywood transitioned from silent films to "talkies", actors and actresses were met with the challenge of adapting to a new role and many of them no longer fit the role required by the growing Hollywood machine. The film Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950) explores and critiques the landscape of the hierarchy and harsh realities of Hollywood. In the same vein as many films of the film noir style, the mood of pessimism and fatalism reflected in the form parallels the reality of many people in Hollywood during the 1900s. It is unsurprising that Wilder–in creating Sunset Boulevard– chose film noir to exhibit the cynicism and despair of those mistreated and thrown away by the film industry. Both protagonists in "Norma Rae" and "Erin Brockovich" were talked down upon because of how they dressed/looked and their past love life. In the poem, "The Low Road" (Piercy 1980) it starts with ... Which is a widely desired car that even the studios wanted to use it in a movie. The car represents how as time goes by nonliving items gain value and people like Norma loose value to others like how the directors don't want to have old actors in new movies but want old cars in new movies. A symbol in the movie is the implicit and explicit pictures of Gloria Swanson in her younger days as an actress in real life. The symbol is that Norma can not get over her past accomplishments to live in the present day. Her glorifications in life is only of her movies now that she is out off the business, the pictures are only there to remind her of those days and retrospect make her feel less good about herself as a person and actress. She still thinks people remember her by sending her fan mail but in turn that is only her butler max sending her them so she has something to be happy about. The third symbol is the graves, which represent her second and third husbands which like joe had enough of her crazy obsession with her past and wanted to leave but they were the only ones to keep her happy so she killed them when they threated to leave her so they could always be with her. Joe noticed them in the beginning in the movie with a empty grave beside them unknown to Joe that that grave as for the monkey at the time but in a few short months when he would want to leave her a grave for him would be prepared for him as ... • 63. How does Sunset Boulevard represent the Hollywood Studio... Sunset Boulevard directed by Billy Wilder in 1950 is based on how Norma Desmond, a huge Hollywood star, deals with her fall from fame. The film explores the fantasy world in which Norma is living in and the complex relationship between her and small time writer Joe Gillis, which leads to his death. Sunset Boulevard is seen as lifting the 'face' of the Hollywood Studio System to reveal the truth behind the organisation. During the time the film was released in the 1950s and 60s, audiences started to see the demise of Hollywood as cinema going began to decline and the fierce competition of television almost proved too much for the well established system. Throughout this essay I will discuss how Sunset Boulevard represents the Hollywood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film's main focus largely represents the Hollywood star system to which Norma Desmond is a victim of. The film particularly highlights the fantasy world in which Norma lives in, the world where she is the 'greatest star' (Norma Desmond, Sunset Boulevard, 1950). Sunset Boulevard steps into Norma's mixed up world where hundreds of photos of herself clutter her crumbling mansion and where she watches herself on screen on a weekly basis. The crumbling and deteriorating mansion could be seen as a metaphor for Norma's fall from stardom, the collapse of her career. The focus of Norma's fame is a recurring theme throughout the film that is referenced in order to emphasise the extent to which fame has affected Norma and her life. When Norma decides to talk to Cecil DeMille about her script the young security guard questions her by saying 'Norma, who?' as the younger generation are unlikely to have heard of the actress. This further emphasises the harsh reality of fame and in particular, Hollywood, as new actors and actresses are constantly churned out to appeal to the audiences needs for the new Hollywood 'star'. Besides the main focus of the star system, other representations of the studio system are also apparent within the film, for example when Joe's thoughts are expressed ... • 65. Analysis Of Breaking The Fourth Wall The next part of analysis is breaking of the fourth wall. The Office uses this technique often. One of the ways a character can break the fourth wall is by using it as an introduction. In the first episode of The Office each character went into an interview and it previewed what their character would be like ("Pilot"). Another way of using this technique is to share their thoughts and emotions. Jim would explain how he has feelings for Pam, but unfortunately she was engaged to someone else ("Gay Witch Hunt"). Nonverbal expression was a technique Jim used a lot in the show. When he worked at the Stamford branch, the office workers there made fun of Jim for always smiling and looking into the camera ("Gay Witch Hunt"). The Office had a creative take on this technique. In the last episode, the show hosted a questionnaire for fans to come in ask them whatever they wanted ("Finale"). This is unique for situation comedies because it blurs the lines of the fourth wall. Part of the reason fans love The Office is because of the relatable or unique characters. Michael Scott is the regional manager and he can tend to be ignorant, but he still tries to connect with his employees. In the first episode ever, the viewer gets a taste of these qualities. Michael says he is the best boss ever and even bought a mug for himself that says "best boss ever" ("Pilot"). In season five, Michael is on Skype with Pam, who was the old receptionist, and shows her the new receptionist and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theme Of Sunset Boulevard SUNSET BOULEVARD Institution Name The movie Sunset Boulevard written by Billy Wilder highlights the screenwriter's potential of making a reflexive film more than focusing on the style and aesthetics. The movie revolves around the life of a fallen silent movie star, Norma Desmond, and her fame delusions. With the introduction of the sound in the film industry, she is brushed off and forgotten not only by her associates but also by her dear fans. This lifestyle change caused her to be drawn into the world of superstardom and luxury that she developed for herself in mind. Her universe involved her mansion full of photos framed of her memories and herself in her past. She identifies very strong with her condition that once it is ... Similarly, Stroheim's career also diminished after the twenties, as it prepared him for his role that undertook as the silent–film director that turned the butler in the film. • 71. Sunset Boulevard Themes Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard (1950) is a uniquely crafted film that provides analytical insight, as well critical underlying themes that focus on the very industry it was born from. The film itself is a commentary of an evolving 1950's Hollywood, that used a sense of realism and irony not seen by other films of its time (TCM). These themes are displayed practically flawlessly through clever and entertaining use of of narration elements, motifs, and whimsical humor. From the very first scene, the viewer's attention is grasped by a brilliant and engaging scene of foreshadowing. Never does the film lose focus on its run, as no shot, nor scene fails to add to character development or further the plot. The film has a wide array of talent within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout his work in the film industry, he gained high success in collaborations with two other talented screenwriters and producers. Their names were Charles Brackett and I.A.L. Diamond. Wilder and bracket co–wrote many of Wilder's films including Sunset Boulevard. When speaking on his inspiration for the film in an interview with Vanity Fair, he cited that, "I wanted to make things a little harder for myself, I wanted to do that thing which never quite works–a picture about Hollywood" (Vanity Fair). At first Wilder and Bracket wanted to make the film a comedy and envisioned the film as a celebrated comeback of a has–been silent film queen (Wilder, B). Though the two eventually choose a semi–darker path for the film revolving around the plot we know today and its suggestive commentary on the industry. In fear of censorship from the Paramount studios, Wilder and Brackett made a phony working title for the film to throw off any overseers, accordingly titled, A Can of Beans. In the film Wilder strived to give an accurate and realistic portrayal of what he believed to be 1950's Hollywood. Though this venture was an entirely different experience for Wilder, for he was not just writing another scrip. He was writing about an industry of which he worked and lived in. The main character even carrying the same occupation as he did. Knowing this, you must bet to believe this to be the reason why he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most of the time, it is because I'm never very hungry until around 4. And I'll admit it is just not healthy. I rarely ever eat breakfast either! Not only do I not eat three meals, but I'm also not eating like I should. I'll be honest, I have been living off Pizza Rolls. Now, I am not saying I am going to go on a crazy diet or starting eating broccoli, but I need to start eating more and eating less Pizza Rolls. Drink more water! I will be completely honest right now, over the course of the entire semester I probably only finished 3 bottles of water total. I've never been much of a water drinker, but I can't continue this bad habit this semester. I decided that I have to at least drink the recommended amount of water per day. To help me out, I am a using a water bottle that has lines and times! It will help me manage my new habit and stay on top of how much water I am drinking. You can't pour from an empty glass! My sleeping habits! If you don't sleep enough, you can't be your best self! How did this go wrong last semester? Well, last semester I was waking up at 6 am and not going to bed until 12–1am! Why? I was doing this because a huge portion of my day surrounded school and homework and then when it was time for bed, I would try to have some me time and then end up staying up late.
