It’s time for your last challenge and it’s the trickiest of
all. For Challenge 3, you are going to design your own
Super Athletes.
Look at the next 2 slides to help you get started, then get
in the zone and start designing!

What is a Super Athlete like?
Lesson 3: Design a Super Athlete
Design a Super Athlete
1. Choose an activity. (E.g. bean-bag throwing.)
2. Which muscles do you think your athlete will use most in this
activity? (E.g. upper arm muscles/lower arm muscles/hand
muscles/shoulder muscles.)
3. Design an experiment to test your prediction. (E.g. I will try
throwing using just my shoulder/hand/upper arm/lower arm
muscles and measure how far the bean bag goes for each.)
4. How will you make it a fair test? (E.g. the same person will
carry out all the tests.)
5. Draw your Super Athlete and label the important muscles.

  2. Examples of sports that children might suggest include: Eyes: Archery, shooting, snooker, darts ... Feet: Football, rugby, running, gymnastics, cycling, judo, hammer throw, ice skating, skiing, high or long jump ... Head: Football, gymnastics, diving ... Shoulders: Swimming, climbing, rugby, weightlifting, shot-put, javelin ... Hands: Volleyball, netball, hockey, rugby, curling, gymnastics, tennis, rowing, pole-vault ...
  3. Read through the email with the children.
  4. Discuss with the children what the people in the photographs are doing and which muscles are working the hardest (arms, legs, shoulders, back, etc.) Ask the children to explain about muscles and what they do.
  5. Children should use the Pupil Sheets on p.22-3 of the Teaching Guide to complete this activity. See p.19 of the Teaching Guide for more detail.
  6. Once the children have finished all the activities in the unit, read this email together and present them with their Super Athletes wristbands from p.24 of the Teaching Guide.
