Introducing our Problem and Solution
Our aim is to find a solution to a problem that applies to all shoppers, the presence of shopping
trolleys that people abandon wherever they feel like after they have finished shopping.These
trolleys cause chaos in the car park for both pedestrians and vehicle users.
AtWheelectric we aim to solve this problem by introducing an automated system to return the
trolleys to the hub when this happens using energy harvested by shoppers pushing the trolley.
The trolleys will follow an infrared line guidance system to go back to the hub leaving a calm,
peaceful car park and start to your trip to the shops.
About our Demonstrators and Design Concept
We have two demonstrators, one shows a representation of a
Trolley following a line with the infrared navigation system and the
other shows how a brushed motor can be used as both a motor and
a generator.
These CAD designs show the design of the
Motor/Generator demonstrator and what each
wheel module could look like at the production
stage.The back two wheels of the trolley would be
powered and the front two standard castors.The
infrared sensor is to be positioned in the centre of
the trolley and send commands to each motor to
result in the correct motion. By having a current flow
to one motor and the opposite side braking we can
make the trolley steer.
Specifications
In the real world when our concept has reached production we
will use a system running on 36v motors and batteries, we
expect to be able to generate up to 0.5 A from the trolley being
pushed, depending on how long the trolley is pushed for and
how far.
This isn’t enough alone to fully charge the battery however by
using other charging methods alongside such as Piezoelectric
generators, and solar panels at the hub we can get the charge
on the batteries to serve the purpose.
This is about generating as much as we can and using the
energy that would otherwise be lost from human effort to
solve our problem.

Products and Services:
The primary objective of our product is to collect and store kinetic energy from shopping
trolleys.With this energy if someone leaves their trolley in the parking lot , the trolley will be
able to return itself.Any excess energy at the end of the day can be either sent to the shop to
help power or sold to the grid.
Our product will be marketed at £99.99
Future Expansion
Our product is a greener alternative to the standard castor wheel
and therefore there are many opportunities for future expansion
into medical, warehouse, office etc settings.
