BAM Conference 2009, Sarajevo, 17.10.2009
This conference explains how Virtual Libraries are organized in Germany and how they can be updated with web 2.0 elements.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Degkwitz gave a presentation on cataloging practices and data quality in German libraries. He discussed:
1) Germany has six regional library networks that provide cataloging and other services, with staff sizes ranging from 15 to 80 people.
2) The origins of the networks were in the 1980s to share cataloging records and facilitate interlibrary loan. Germany now has national databases for serials and e-journals.
3) Current cataloging rules are based on earlier Prussian rules and have unique structures for hierarchical works, but these are not used internationally. Libraries are working to implement RDA and dealing with the transition to new library systems.

Periodicals and Newspapers in Database Projects of the Heidelberg Research Ar...Matthias Arnold
206 words
This paper introduces resources on newspapers and magazines developed by the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA), the Digital Humanities unit of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”. Its focus will rest on the Early Chinese Periodicals Online (ECPO) project, a collaborative endeavor between Academia Sinica, Taipei, the Cluster project MC15 “Powers of the Press,” and the HRA. The technical core of ECPO is the development of a database of women’s magazines and entertainment newspapers.
This database combines and significantly expands two resources developed in the Cluster’s first funding period which represent two complementary methodological approaches: The “Xiaobao Entertainment Newspapers” database covers more than fifty newspapers and provides information from a macro perspective (“extensive approach”). It offers characteristic features of individual newspapers and illustrates these with a number of examples. The “Chinese Women’s Magazines” database approaches its material from a micro perspective (“intensive approach”). It covers four major publications and records and analyses every single item, including advertisements.
While both methods have their advantages, with the extensive analysis providing characteristic features of a larger set of publications, and the intensive analysis offering detailed information for individual magazines, their combination within one system will offer a powerful research framework for the study of Early Chinese Periodicals.
Cabriology The Bruges Aquabrowser ExperienceKoen Calis
The document discusses the Bruges Public Library's "Cabrio" system which aims to integrate, advise on, and mobilize access to the library's resources in three ways:
1. It integrates the library's catalogue with resources from other libraries and databases to provide a more comprehensive search experience for users.
2. It provides advisory services such as personalized recommendations, subject guides, and enriched metadata to help users discover relevant resources.
3. It mobilizes access to the library's content by optimizing its website and blog, encouraging sharing on social networks, and planning to integrate review and list-making tools to better engage users outside of the library.
These slides review the Europeana Libraries project, a 2011-2 project funded by the European Commission in the field of digital libraries. The project sought to develop the structure of The European Library, and help aggregate metadata from research libraries in Europe.
LIBER is a network of over 425 European research libraries from over 40 countries. It focuses on activities like scholarly communication, digitization, heritage collections, and participating in EU projects. Some examples of EU projects LIBER participates in include Europeana Libraries, which provides open access to 5 million digitized objects. The Europeana Newspapers Project aims to aggregate and refine over 18 million digitized newspaper pages for Europeana and The European Library through activities like optical character recognition and named entity recognition. The project involves 17 partners from 12 countries and seeks to improve access to digitized newspaper collections through Europeana.
The document discusses future directions for The European Library (TEL) to better include research libraries and their resources. It proposes that TEL aggregate metadata, digitized special collections, theses, journals, and other materials from research libraries to make these resources more visible and discoverable. TEL could provide a platform for research by linking related materials across libraries and allowing tools to be built on aggregated content. The document advocates inviting more research libraries to contribute data and content to TEL to help create a European research platform and opportunities for digital humanities research.
Alastair Dunning, Future Directions for The European Library The European Library
The European Library is looking to expand its focus beyond national libraries to include research libraries. It aims to aggregate new forms of digital content from research libraries like research datasets, open access articles and monographs, digitized special collections, theses, and grey literature. It also wants to aggregate item-level descriptions and digitized versions of special collections to increase their visibility and discoverability. The European Library plans to create a European research platform by allowing libraries to share and retrieve content through Europeana Cloud. This will enable the research community to build tools on aggregated content. The goal is to better expose research library metadata and content to create new links and research opportunities.
This document provides an overview of library resources and research strategies for writing an annotated bibliography. It discusses developing a research topic and concept map, using library catalogs and databases to find books and journal articles, evaluating internet sources, managing citations with RefWorks, and getting research assistance from librarians. Key resources covered include the library catalog, OhioLink, general and subject-specific databases, and RefWorks.
UVA MDST 3703 Thematic Research Collections 2012-09-18Rafael Alvarado
The document discusses thematic research collections (TRCs) as an emerging genre of digital scholarship. TRCs consolidate related content to overcome the problem of traditional libraries scattering content. Key features of TRCs include being electronic, structured yet open-ended, research-oriented, and achieving "contextual mass" by making connections between resources. The document then examines several examples of TRCs and evaluates them based on six criteria like content, organization, findability, connections between resources, tools provided, and community involvement.

Linked Data for Libraries: Great progress, but what is the benefit?Richard Wallis
Richard Wallis of OCLC discusses the benefits of linked data for libraries. While great progress has been made in exposing library data as linked data, more work remains to fully integrate it into the web of data. Linking library data to outside resources using common schemas can help libraries make their collections more visible and discoverable online. This will allow users to more easily find and access library resources through web searches and other services.
This document provides an overview of grey literature and strategies for searching it. It defines grey literature as semi-published or unpublished work not produced by commercial publishers, such as reports, theses, and conference proceedings. Reasons to use grey literature include finding preliminary data and viewpoints not available in traditional publications. The document recommends search engines and repositories for finding grey literature, including BASE, OpenGrey, Google Scholar, and subject-specific databases. It provides tips for effective searching and examples of sources for different subject areas like social sciences, health, and government publications. Hands-on activities are suggested to allow people to practice searching grey literature resources.
