Management Situation notes
1. Slide 1 Title: Reflection 1
Slide 2 Setting: It was my first real job during High School. I was working as a mechanic at a local car
dealership. This particular incident took place on my day off on the Snap-On tool truck at the
dealership. Almost everyone hated the owner of the dealership.
Slide 3 Task: My job was to work on cars of course. We had to provide our own tools which we could
buy off of tool trucks that stopped by during the week. We were also to try and keep busy and not chat
with each other too much.
Slide 4 Action: I stopped by the dealership on my day off to purchase a tool since the truck was there
that day. My friend from high school also got a job there after I had been working there for a while. I
stopped to ask him if the truck had been there yet. He said it should be there soon. It showed up and I
went in.
Slide 5 Result: The owner of the dealership must have seen us talking and he came on to the truck while
I was looking around and while the truck driver was talking on his cell phone. The owner proceeded to
chew me out about talking with my friend. I didn’t really say anything to him or try to defend myself. I
was shocked, mad at myself and at the owner.
Slide 6 transition
Slide 7 Location: Chevrolet car dealership in Michigan.
Slide 8 Task: As the owner of the dealership I am responsible for my employees and making sure
everyone stays on task in order for the business to make money and stay in business. My employees are
hard workers
Slide 9 Action: I see one of my employees (Nate) talking with his friend again from high school who also
works here. I have warned my employees not to be standing around talking because it makes it look like
we aren’t getting any work done to the customers. When my customers see my employees slacking off
they may decide to take their business elsewhere.
Slide 10 Result: I am a little upset that I have to stop what I am doing and go talk to my employees and
remind them not to be chatting with each other. I hate doing it but if I don’t give them a stern talking to
they might keep doing it. I am disappointed in them because I have warned them before not to be
chatting.
Slide 11 Title: Organizational leadership is defined as “an interpersonal process that involves attempts
to influence other people in attaining organizational goals”, (Hitt, Black, and Porter, 3rd ed.,
p.206).Motivation is “a set of forces that energize, direct, and sustain behavior” (Hitt, Black, and Porter,
3rd ed., p. 241).
Slide 12 Leadership: Self Confidence. Leadership self-confidence is defined as “a strong belief in one’s
own capabilities”, (Hitt, Black, and Porter, 3rd ed., p.217). Because of my lower Self Confidence in
2. dealing with figures of authority I didn’t really stand up for myself when confronted by the dealership
owner.
Slide 13 Leadership: Communication: Our book describes communication as “the process of transferring
information, meaning, and understanding from sender to receiver” (Hitt, Black, and Porter, 3rd ed.,
p.303). Due to my lack of self-confidence I didn’t effectively communicate to the owner that I only
asked my friend a quick question, I wasn’t chatting. I also didn’t communicate to him that I was off the
clock on my own time.
Slide 14 Motivation: Punishment: Punishment is “an unwanted consequence that follows undesirable
behavior that is intended to decrease the likelihood of that behavior being repeated” (Hitt, Black, and
Porter, 3rd ed., p. 255). Because I was told before by one of my supervisors not to be standing around
chatting when there is work to be done, I didn’t think I would be punished for asking a quick question
while I was “off the clock.”
Slide 15 Motivation: Goal Setting: Another concept of motivation is goal setting which “a theory that
emphasizes the role of conscious goals and intentions in directing human actions” (Hitt, Black, and
Porter, 3rd ed., p. 253). I set the goal to come in on my day off in order to buy a tool that would help me
do my job. Since it was my first real job I also had the goal of keeping that job and making a good
impression with my supervisors and co-workers.
Slide 16 Transition
Slide 17 Personality Traits: Looking back I realized that I try to avoid conflict or that I am a passive
person who will at times keep quiet to authority figures even if I am right. It usually worked out for me
just to keep my mouth shut and then to argue.
Slide 18 Improving: I have learned that I need to stand up for myself and for my actions. Part of that is
making sure that I communicate better.
Slide 19 Understanding: By seeing the situation from my boss’s perspective I can see that everyone had
a job to do even the boss. He was trying to keep the dealership going and probably didn’t know that I
was off the clock at the time. This has lead me to understand that I share some of the blame in the
situation.
Slide 20 Overall Experience: To be a better manager of healthy relationships in the future I need to be
clear on expectations and directions if it means repeating them to make sure I understood it all. Also by
understanding others’ perspectives I can understand situations better. Finally and most importantly I
think I need to communicate and stand up for myself.
