1) The document summarizes a sermon about how love is exemplified through the story of Ruth and Naomi in the Bible. It discusses how Ruth commits to loving and caring for her mother-in-law Naomi above herself.
2) It also discusses how Boaz shows love for Ruth by protecting her and ensuring her needs are met while she is gleaning.
3) Finally, it encourages readers to go above expectations and cultural norms by committing to love others, as Ruth and Boaz did.

Living the Law of Love
An Example From Ruth
“If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one
another.” John 13:35
A king rules where his subjects obey his law. God reigns where His
people keep the law of love.
Man or woman, old or young, no matter what race or culture—God
moves through people committed to love.
1) Love puts others above self
• Naomi urges her daughters-in-law to return. Ruth 1:8-9
• Ruth commits to Naomi.
Ruth 1:16-18: But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn
back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.
Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I
will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it
ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” When Naomi
realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging
her.
2. 2) Love does everything to help
• Ruth volunteers to glean. 2:2
• Boaz provides for Ruth.
• Invites her to glean in safety. 2:8-9
• Feeds her. 2:14
• Instructs his workers to leave extra for her. 2:15-16
3) Love guides obedience
• Naomi instructs on law and custom, and Ruth obeys. 3:1-5
• Ruth spurs Boaz to act obediently as redeemer. 3:9
• Boaz obeys law and custom to become their redeemer.
3:12-13, 4:1-12
Orpah isn’t shamed in the story—she had every right to return. The
other kinsman wasn’t shamed—he legally was allowed to refuse to
redeem. Ruth and Boaz, however, go above the cultural norms and the
acceptable standards.
Can we, too, go beyond expectations?
Because of Christ’s obedience to the law of love, WE are brought into
the kingdom of God. Because of the Holy Spirit, WE are helped to do
the same.
May we walk in obedience because we love God and others.
May God rule in our lives.
Questions for reflection/discussion:
1. What does “love” mean? What does it look like in your life each day?
2. Do you experience tension between the ideas of “law” and “love”?
3. Why do we struggle to love? What can we do to stop that?
4. What takes the place of God as king in your life?
5. Do you have people mentoring you? Do you have someone to
mentor?
Who could you commit to loving?

An Important Message from the
WCUMC Trustees
The Trustees Committee has recommended
that we replace the 50-year-old oil-fired
boiler (converted to natural gas in the 90’s)
with two hi-efficiency gas-fired furnaces to
heat the Gathering Place and the Celebration
Hall.
This will be much more efficient and enable
us to heat the two areas independently.
The cost of the project is estimated at $45,000 and we are asking
the congregation to fund half of it.
Since winter is fast approaching, there is some urgency in acquiring
these funds so that the contractor can get started by early October.
Thank you.
4. Special Invitation - You’re invited to celebrate Stephen (Bus) and
Ida May Brown’s 70th wedding anniversary on August 29 from
2:00-4:00pm in the Gathering Place.

Wednesday Women's Bible Study
Begins September 9
This virtue has been wrapped in cliches, stamped on coffee mugs, and
sewn on decorative pillows. Through storytelling, humor, and
difficult diagnosis, Margaret Feinberg shows how joy is more than
whimsy; it's the weaponry you need to fight life's greatest battles.
In this 6-session Bible Stud, you will learn how to:
Expand your joy threshold by awakening to God's fierce love for
you.
Escape fear and regret by applying Biblical truths to whatever
crisis you are facing.
Discover freedom from the past by learning how to turn
mourning into joy.
Rise about your circumstances and become more winsome,
cheerful, and thankful.
Join us for coffee in the Gathering Place at 9:15/
The session is from 9:30 - 11:15 AM

Vanishing Grace
What Ever Happened To The Good
News?
As much as we may want others to know the good
news of forgiveness and experience the hope of a
redeemed life, the good news isn't sounding so good to many people
these days. Bestselling author, Phillip Yancey, explores why favorable
opinions of Christianity have plummeted, and opinions of Evangelicals
have fallen even more.
In this study, we will explore what we can do to make sure that the
good news is indeed good. And we will hear illuminating stories of
how faith can be expressed in ways that disarm even the most cynical
critics.
This 10-week study begins on September 13, and will include videos,
group discussion, and activities that can be done between sessions to
bring this important lesson to life. It is highly recommended that you
buy the hardcover book prior to the start of class to gain the fullest
8. enjoyment from this study.
