Reflective Practice: how successful were the lessons?
Year 7
I taught two lessons with my year 7 class, which focused on writing their own
radio advert and performing them to the rest of the class. The first lesson
consisted of students thinking about what is included in a radio advert, and
listening to some radio adverts, deciding what persuasive and speaking
devices were used. I felt that this lesson went well, but students copying out
tables was time consuming. However, with the department head imposing a
strict photocopying rule, I felt that it was this was the only way to do it. The
second lesson focused on finishing the radio advert, and they were
apprehensive to stand up to speak. I explained the reason was to get used to
speaking and listening in the future, and that you will need to learn how to
stand up in front of people and speak. I thought the lesson went well, with
positive comments from the students when giving feedback. I feel that I need
to practice writing notes when listening so that I can give proper feedback to
students when they are doing their speaking and listening. Another way could
also be to record students so that I can listen back to how they spoke and
grade them respectively.
Year 8
I taught two lessons with my year 8 class, which focused on preparing for their
assessment. The first lesson looked at using sample PEE paragraphs
according to levels and making a checklist of what to include to hit each level.
This focused on students aiming for a level 6, 7 and 8; this was decided as
they are a high-ability group and I felt that they need to be sufficiently
challenged. The lesson consisted on the students providing their own input to
make this ‘checklist’, and thereafter, they had to write a PEE paragraph using
one of the speeches that we have focused on. I felt that to improve the lesson,
more time should have been dedicated to the peer assessment section of the
lesson; this ended up with self-assessment and the students ticking off the
points that they felt they had hit with their paragraph. Again, this was the
problem with the second lesson, more time needed to be dedicated to the
planning time. The students were going into more detail about the shared
sonnet, but I felt we spent too long on the analysis. I feel that I need to make
sure I give students sufficient time to complete the main (writing) task.
Year 9
I taught one lesson with my year 9 class, focusing on the annotations of An
Inspector Calls. This focused on annotating the play, asking students
questions along the way. The class teacher and I decided it would be best if I
could watch her take a lesson and annotate so that I could witness how she
annotated with the class, and how she kept up the pace and explanations. I
felt this benefitted me, seeing how she would dictate to the students and
highlight the phrases on the board. Now I feel that I need to develop this habit
of ‘annotations’ and make sure pace is kept at all times.
Action Points:
 Give students more time to focus on the main (normally writing)
task
 Think of ways to record S&L and improve note taking
 Develop pace when annotating An Inspector Calls
