4. 5 – Step Lawn Care Program
Step 1 (Oct - Nov) Apply Pre-Emergent-Winter Annual Seeds
Pre-emergent herbicides are spread on the lawn before certain weeds sprout. They create a film on the soil and
are usually used to kill annual grassy weeds as they germinate - that is, before they have emerged through the
soil surface. Winter annuals like Annual Bluegrass and Common Chickweed germinate in the fall. So, pr-emergent
is applied between early October through November to protect you lawn against these weeds in the spring.
Step 2 (Feb - April) Apply Pre-Emergent – Summer Annual Seeds
•Pre-emergent herbicides are spread on the lawn before certain weeds sprout. They create a film on the soil and
are usually used to kill annual grassy weeds as they germinate - that is, before they have emerged through the
soil surface. Summer annuals germinate in the spring. The application must be applied between February and
April to protect your lawn against these weeds.
•Step 3 (April - May) Apply Post-Emergent – Weed
•Post-emergent herbicides are applied directly to young weeds that are already up and growing. These are mostly
used to control specific broadleaf weeds. They don't kill other weeds or grasses. Most lawn post-emergents today
are systemic, which means they are absorbed into the system of the plant and kill the whole thing. It should be
applied when the soil temperatures are above 70 and 90 degrees F.
Step 4 (May - July) Spring Fertilizer
•There are three main nutrients that your lawn needs. These are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen
gives your grass that beautiful dark green color and helps produce a thick, lush turf. Phosphorus strengthens the
roots and causes proper seed formation. Warn season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia need a higher amount of
nitrogen applied in the spring.
Step 5 (Sept-Oct) Fall Fertilizer
•There are three main nutrients that your lawn needs. These are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen
gives your grass that beautiful dark green color and helps produce a thick, lush turf. Phosphorus strengthens the
roots and causes proper seed formation. Cool season grasses like Bluegrass and Fescue need a higher amount
of Nitrogen applied in the fall.

5. Optional Lawn Care Treatments
De-Thatching (When there is a build up of over 12 inch)
Thatch is the layer of built-up plant material between the green top growth and the roots of grass plants that develops
naturally as lawn grasses grow and slough off roots, shoots and leaves. Some thatch helps protect the roots, but excessive
thatch prevents moisture, oxygen and nutrients from penetrating the soil and can harbor disease and insects. Dethatching
forces buds to grow near the base of the grass stems, preventing the grass plants from being dead underneath and only
green on top
Aerating (Depending on grass type)
As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports activities, pets, vehicle traffic and parking, soil compaction can result.
Soil compacting forces are most severe in poorly drained or wet sites. Compaction greatly reduces the pore space within the
soil that would normally hold air. Roots require oxygen to grow and absorb nutrients and water. This results in poor top
growth and lawn deterioration, which results in run off. Cool season grass should be aerated in March-May and in August –
November. Warm season grass should be aerated from May-July.
Over seeding (Depending on grass type)
The optimum time to seed cool-season turf grasses is during September. This is when nature establishes cool-season
grasses; therefore, the best results with the least amount of work occur at that time. Do not delay seeding or the grass will
not establish sufficiently before winter and weeds like henbit and chickweed become a problem. March and April are second
choices for seeding but are a distant second at best. The optimum time to over seed warm-season grass is in late spring to
early summer.
Grub Control (June-August)
Grubs are the larvae stage of a beetle. Not only do they kill plants, shrubs and grass by eating on their roots, their presence
tends to attract all kinds of animals. Moles, armadillos, mice, rats, gophers and raccoons are just some of the animals that will
likely tear up and pull apart lawns, in an effort to find grubs. They “love” grubs and lawns, which have an active grub
population, will undoubtedly start to experience animal digging and damage. If you already have this activity you need to put
an end to it as soon as possible, Turf which is in a weakened state already, will die off from all of the digging. Grub treatment
should be applied between June and August when they are closer to the surface.
Trees Worms (May - June)
Bag-Worms should be treated from early to mid-June after they start to feed.
Web Worms should be treated from may thru June as they start to appear. Spray can be directed directly on to the web and
around the base of the trunk.
