               Agronomy Sciences
Glyphosate Era

• Last 15 years = “glyphosate era” of weed control
• Glyphosate rapidly replaced other herbicides:
   – By 2002 glyphosate was
     used on 79% of U.S.
     soybean acres
     (Young, 2006)
   – Adoption was slower in
     corn, but by 2010
     glyphosate was used on
66% of U.S. corn acres U.S. corn and soybean acres planted with
(USDA NASS 2011) genetically modified herbicide-resistant
                                         crops (USDA ERS)

Post Glyphosate Era
• With increase reports of glyphosate resistant weeds, many areas are now
  transitioning into a “post-glyphosate era”
• Glyphosate resistance
  confirmed in:
 – 24 weed species worldwide
 – 14 weed species in
   North America
• Resistant weed populations
  have been confirmed in
29 states and two Canadian Confirmed glyphosate-
  provinces resistant weeds in North
                                                         America, 2004-12
                                                         (Heap, 2012).

                                Agronomy Sciences
Glyphosate Resistance
• Despite rapid increase in glyphosate resistance cases, glyphosate
resistance incidences relatively low compared to other herbicides
  – Glyphosate = 24 resistant weeds
  – ALS inhibitor = 127 resistant weeds
  – Traizine = 69 resistant weeds

• Glyphosate still an important
  and useful weed control,
  especially in combination
  with other herbicides.

Giant ragweed, a species with multiple
                                            herbicide resistance.

Outlook for New Weed Control Options
• Since the introduction of glyphosate-resistant crops in 1996, no new
herbicide modes of action have been commercialized
• New herbicide products have continued to come to market but have
been either new premixes or formulations of existing active ingredients,
or new active ingredients in existing herbicide classes

• Developing new herbicide modes of action have declined due to:
  – Widespread adoption of glyphosate-resistant crops and glyphosate-based
    weed management programs
  – Price reductions after patent expiration for glyphosate and other active
    ingredients

  – Extensive consolidation and downsizing in the crop protection industry

                                   Agronomy Sciences
Expanded options with Existing Herbicides
• New types of herbicide-resistant crops are expected this decade and
will expand weed control options with existing herbicides
• Multiple herbicide-resistant crops are the immediate future for weed
  control
     – Especially important with no new herbicide modes of action coming soon

• Growers will have more options for managing resistant weeds
• Still relying on active ingredients documented with resistance
• Alternative herbicide-resistant crop technology:
     – Glufosinate-resistant crops already on the market
     – 2,4-D and dicamba-resistant crops soon to be on the market
     – 4-HPPD-resisant soybeans

                                 Agronomy Sciences
Weed Resistance to Herbicides
• Glufosinate
  – Resistant goosegrass in Malaysia in 2009; Italian ryegrass resistant to both
glufosinate and glyphosate discovered in Oregon in 2010.
  – Low use of glufosinate has limited the selection intensity for resistant weeds
• Dicamba
  – Resistance documented in several weed species.
  – Noteworthy cases include dicamba-resistant kochia in several western states
and common lambsquarters in New Zealand.
• 2,4-D
  – Resistance documented in numerous weed species
  – 2,4-D-resistant waterhemp discovered in Nebraska in 2009.
• 4-HPPD inhibitors (mesotrione, isoxaflutole)
  – Mesotrione-resistant waterhemp confirmed in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.
  – The relatively recent introduction of this mode of action has limited the selection
intensity for resistant weeds. Resistance cases will likely increase.

                                     Agronomy Sciences
Lessons from Glyphosate Resistance
• All herbicides are susceptible to resistant weed evolution with time
  and repeated use
• Rotating or combing herbicide modes of action will help prolong the
  usefulness of a herbicide
• The use of an integrated weed management strategy is key to weed
  control
• Cannot depend on use of chemicals alone to keep weeds in check,
but need to incorporate non-chemical control tactics such as
mechanical weed control and crop rotations

                               Agronomy Sciences
Best Management Practices for Managing Herbicide Resistance

•Understand the biology of the weeds present.
•Use a diversified approach toward weed management focused on
preventing weed seed production and reducing the number of weed
 seed in the soil seedbank.
•Plant into weed-free fields, and then keep fields as weed free as
 possible.
•Plant weed-free crop seed.
•Scout fields routinely.
•Use multiple herbicide mechanisms of action that are effective
against the most troublesome weeds or those most prone to
 herbicide resistance.
(Norsworthy et al. 2012)

                              Agronomy Sciences
BMPs for Managing Herbicide Resistance (continued)

•Apply the labeled herbicide rate at recommended weed sizes.
•Emphasize cultural practices that suppress weeds by using crop
 competitiveness.
•Use mechanical and biological management practices where
 appropriate.
•Prevent field-to-field and within-field movement of weed seed or
 vegetative propagules.
•Manage weed seed at harvest and after harvest to prevent a
 buildup of the weed seedbank.
•Prevent an influx of weeds into the field by managing field borders.

(Norsworthy et al. 2012)

Weed Management in the Era of Glyphosate Resistance

  • 1. Weed Management in the Era of Glyphosate Resistance Agronomy Sciences Agronomy Sciences
  • 2. Glyphosate Era • Last 15 years = “glyphosate era” of weed control • Glyphosate rapidly replaced other herbicides: – By 2002 glyphosate was used on 79% of U.S. soybean acres (Young, 2006) – Adoption was slower in corn, but by 2010 glyphosate was used on 66% of U.S. corn acres U.S. corn and soybean acres planted with (USDA NASS 2011) genetically modified herbicide-resistant crops (USDA ERS) Agronomy Sciences
  • 3. Post Glyphosate Era • With increase reports of glyphosate resistant weeds, many areas are now transitioning into a “post-glyphosate era” • Glyphosate resistance confirmed in: – 24 weed species worldwide – 14 weed species in North America • Resistant weed populations have been confirmed in 29 states and two Canadian Confirmed glyphosate- provinces resistant weeds in North America, 2004-12 (Heap, 2012). Agronomy Sciences
  • 4. Glyphosate Resistance • Despite rapid increase in glyphosate resistance cases, glyphosate resistance incidences relatively low compared to other herbicides – Glyphosate = 24 resistant weeds – ALS inhibitor = 127 resistant weeds – Traizine = 69 resistant weeds • Glyphosate still an important and useful weed control, especially in combination with other herbicides. Giant ragweed, a species with multiple herbicide resistance. Agronomy Sciences
  • 5. Multiple Herbicide Resistant Weeds Species State Modes of Action • Small number of Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors, PPO MO, IL1 weeds resistant to inhibitors more than one IL Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors Common herbicide Waterhemp IL2 Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors, PPO inhibitors, photosystem II inhibitors • Growers left with Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors, 4-HPPD fewer viable options IA inhibitors for control Palmer Amaranth GA, MS, Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors TN • Table shows weed Giant Ragweed OH, MN Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors populations with resistance to more Common Ragweed OH Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors than one herbicide OH, ON Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors Horseweed MS Glyphosate, paraquat Kochia AB Glyphosate, ALS inhibitors Agronomy Sciences
  • 6. Outlook for New Weed Control Options • Since the introduction of glyphosate-resistant crops in 1996, no new herbicide modes of action have been commercialized • New herbicide products have continued to come to market but have been either new premixes or formulations of existing active ingredients, or new active ingredients in existing herbicide classes • Developing new herbicide modes of action have declined due to: – Widespread adoption of glyphosate-resistant crops and glyphosate-based weed management programs – Price reductions after patent expiration for glyphosate and other active ingredients – Extensive consolidation and downsizing in the crop protection industry Agronomy Sciences
  • 7. Expanded options with Existing Herbicides • New types of herbicide-resistant crops are expected this decade and will expand weed control options with existing herbicides • Multiple herbicide-resistant crops are the immediate future for weed control – Especially important with no new herbicide modes of action coming soon • Growers will have more options for managing resistant weeds • Still relying on active ingredients documented with resistance • Alternative herbicide-resistant crop technology: – Glufosinate-resistant crops already on the market – 2,4-D and dicamba-resistant crops soon to be on the market – 4-HPPD-resisant soybeans Agronomy Sciences
  • 8. Weed Resistance to Herbicides • Glufosinate – Resistant goosegrass in Malaysia in 2009; Italian ryegrass resistant to both glufosinate and glyphosate discovered in Oregon in 2010. – Low use of glufosinate has limited the selection intensity for resistant weeds • Dicamba – Resistance documented in several weed species. – Noteworthy cases include dicamba-resistant kochia in several western states and common lambsquarters in New Zealand. • 2,4-D – Resistance documented in numerous weed species – 2,4-D-resistant waterhemp discovered in Nebraska in 2009. • 4-HPPD inhibitors (mesotrione, isoxaflutole) – Mesotrione-resistant waterhemp confirmed in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska. – The relatively recent introduction of this mode of action has limited the selection intensity for resistant weeds. Resistance cases will likely increase. Agronomy Sciences
  • 9. Lessons from Glyphosate Resistance • All herbicides are susceptible to resistant weed evolution with time and repeated use • Rotating or combing herbicide modes of action will help prolong the usefulness of a herbicide • The use of an integrated weed management strategy is key to weed control • Cannot depend on use of chemicals alone to keep weeds in check, but need to incorporate non-chemical control tactics such as mechanical weed control and crop rotations Agronomy Sciences
  • 10. Best Management Practices for Managing Herbicide Resistance •Understand the biology of the weeds present. •Use a diversified approach toward weed management focused on preventing weed seed production and reducing the number of weed seed in the soil seedbank. •Plant into weed-free fields, and then keep fields as weed free as possible. •Plant weed-free crop seed. •Scout fields routinely. •Use multiple herbicide mechanisms of action that are effective against the most troublesome weeds or those most prone to herbicide resistance. (Norsworthy et al. 2012) Agronomy Sciences
  • 11. BMPs for Managing Herbicide Resistance (continued) •Apply the labeled herbicide rate at recommended weed sizes. •Emphasize cultural practices that suppress weeds by using crop competitiveness. •Use mechanical and biological management practices where appropriate. •Prevent field-to-field and within-field movement of weed seed or vegetative propagules. •Manage weed seed at harvest and after harvest to prevent a buildup of the weed seedbank. •Prevent an influx of weeds into the field by managing field borders. (Norsworthy et al. 2012) Agronomy Sciences
