The Web Science group at the University of Southampton includes 20 faculty members researching areas related to the open web, semantic web, digital memories, trust and privacy, and learning with the web. The group promotes web science education through curriculum development, summer schools, and coordinates research agendas, labs, and conferences to advance thought leadership in the field with the goal of creating additional insights beyond existing disciplines.

What is a digital library, repository or platform?
A digital library, repository or platform is a place to discover, create and share knowledge and ideas through open access to digital information and connections between people. It acts as both a repository for preserving collections of knowledge and a facilitator for developing and sharing new ideas. An important role is providing a trust framework to ensure the provenance or origins of information are verifiable. The goals are to apply the technologies and culture of the internet to respond to people's expectations of access while serving the traditional library functions of being a place of record and discovery in a digital context.
NoTube: integrating TV and Web with the help of semantics
The NoTube project aims to put users in control of their personal data by integrating TV and web content using semantics. The architecture supports multiple devices and uses metadata from over 170 channels along with external vocabularies. It profiles users based on activity streams and recommendations from collaborative and content-based filters using semantic patterns. A demonstrator provides suggestions, sharing, and social TV survey results showing people want to watch and discuss TV together.
Digital transformations: new challenges for the arts and humanities - Andrew ...
‘Digital Transformations’ is one of four major stretegic themes currently being developed by the Arts and Humaniies Research Council.
In this presentation, the Theme Leader Fellow will explore some of the work that has been undertaken by projects funded within this strand and will consider how they reflect the wider possibilities and challenges presented to the arts and humanities by such developments as data analytics, linking of data, visulalisation and the internet of things. The way in which the arts and humanities can also offer a distinctive perspective on such issues as identity, authenticity, cretivity and the digital economy will also be discussed.

Abstract
"This paper will discuss the Clarke Stained Glass Studios Collection, a collaborative project between the Library at Trinity College Dublin and the Digital Repository of Ireland. The project is digitising, cataloguing and making accessible to researchers and the wider public the business archives and the designs for stained glass windows of the Clarke Stained Glass Studios, held in the Manuscripts & Archives Research Library at Trinity College Dublin. The collection will be available both through the Digital Collections site at Trinity College Dublin, and through the Digital Repository of Ireland.
The paper will explore the relevance of a research-collection based approach to digitisation of library materials; the value of a digitisation project of this kind for teachers, researchers and the general public; the challenges facing such projects; and how these can be resolved through effective collaborations with internal and external partners. The challenges include issues such as the management of the copyright and orphan works workflow; deciding on an appropriate level of description for the digitised materials; metadata mapping; and promoting the collection to the right audience. The strategies to face those challenges include collaboration with library cataloguers, subject librarians and academics; tapping on the expertise of associated projects such as the DRI; and organising research symposia to promote the digital collection internally and externally. The literature on digital collections projects in university libraries will be reviewed in order to provide an international context to our case study.

Biography
Dr. Marta Bustillo is Assistant Librarian in the Digital Resources and Imaging Services Department in Trinity College Library, working as Metadata Cataloguer for the Clarke Studios Digitisation Project. Marta has a Ph.D. in Art History from Trinity College Dublin, and an M.A. in Information and Library Management from Northumbria University. She has managed digitisation projects at the library of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and the Fleet Library at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island.
Tim Keefe is a recent transplant to Ireland from the United States and is the head of the Digital Resources and Imaging Services (DRIS) Department at Trinity College Dublin.

This session focussed on areas where universities are (re)discovering roles, especially in the area of book publishing. Participants will be provided with evidence to help them consider this role for universities as publishers and its implications for them.

Materiality and the digital archive
1) The digital archive complicates notions of materiality and the relationship between the physical and digital. Digitization disrupts traditional hierarchies of archives by making materials more accessible and mutable.
2) Media archaeology approaches the digital archive through studying the histories of different media and technologies. It examines how digital archives operate as dynamic networks and social platforms rather than static stores of history.
3) As physical archives become digitized, concepts of the archive are shifting from places that freeze time and regulate access/use, to archives that are in constant motion and allow for remixing. The boundaries between archive and database are also blurring.

These centers were encouraged by the Chinese government to support innovation and patent applications. They provide services like patent searches, analysis of patent trends, and support for industries. While still developing, they represent a promising new direction for academic research libraries in China. Abstract
As more student academic activities involve both institutional and social networks, educational analysts are needing to investigate ways in which this data can be collected and interpreted to enhance learning experiences. Data recorded as students explore personal learning environments is most often not accessible or incomplete. Here we explore some of the approaches that exist to use these social networking platforms along with information from the learning management system and academic records. Combining and analysing this data has allowed us to create a number of interesting visualizations exposing patterns which would have been impossible to glean from looking at the data alone. In an age of data abundance we reflect on using some of these new measures in relation to improving learning design, increasing academic responsiveness and enhanced student experiences.
