Presented at the CONUL Conference, July 2015, Athlone, Ireland by Marta Bustillo, Tim Keefe, Trinity College Dublin. Abstract "This paper will discuss the Clarke Stained Glass Studios Collection, a collaborative project between the Library at Trinity College Dublin and the Digital Repository of Ireland. The project is digitising, cataloguing and making accessible to researchers and the wider public the business archives and the designs for stained glass windows of the Clarke Stained Glass Studios, held in the Manuscripts & Archives Research Library at Trinity College Dublin. The collection will be available both through the Digital Collections site at Trinity College Dublin, and through the Digital Repository of Ireland. The paper will explore the relevance of a research-collection based approach to digitisation of library materials; the value of a digitisation project of this kind for teachers, researchers and the general public; the challenges facing such projects; and how these can be resolved through effective collaborations with internal and external partners. The challenges include issues such as the management of the copyright and orphan works workflow; deciding on an appropriate level of description for the digitised materials; metadata mapping; and promoting the collection to the right audience. The strategies to face those challenges include collaboration with library cataloguers, subject librarians and academics; tapping on the expertise of associated projects such as the DRI; and organising research symposia to promote the digital collection internally and externally. The literature on digital collections projects in university libraries will be reviewed in order to provide an international context to our case study. " Biography Dr. Marta Bustillo is Assistant Librarian in the Digital Resources and Imaging Services Department in Trinity College Library, working as Metadata Cataloguer for the Clarke Studios Digitisation Project. Marta has a Ph.D. in Art History from Trinity College Dublin, and an M.A. in Information and Library Management from Northumbria University. She has managed digitisation projects at the library of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and the Fleet Library at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Tim Keefe is a recent transplant to Ireland from the United States and is the head of the Digital Resources and Imaging Services (DRIS) Department at Trinity College Dublin.

‘Digital Transformations’ is one of four major stretegic themes currently being developed by the Arts and Humaniies Research Council. In this presentation, the Theme Leader Fellow will explore some of the work that has been undertaken by projects funded within this strand and will consider how they reflect the wider possibilities and challenges presented to the arts and humanities by such developments as data analytics, linking of data, visulalisation and the internet of things. The way in which the arts and humanities can also offer a distinctive perspective on such issues as identity, authenticity, cretivity and the digital economy will also be discussed.

Collections unbound: collection directions and the RLUK collective collection

A presentation given to RLUK Members' meeting at the University of Warwick. The library identity has been closely bound with its collection. However this is changing as research and learning behaviours evolve in a network environment. There are three interesting trends. First, atttention is shifting from a library-centric view of a locally owned collection to a user-centred view of a facilitated collection in places where the library can add value. Second, there is growing emphasis on support for creation, for the process of research, as well as for the products, the article or book. And third, we are seeing a changing perspective on the historic core, the print book collection. Increasingly, this is being seen in collective ways as institutions manage down print, or think about its management in cooperative settings, or retire collections as space is reconfigured around research and learning experiences. This presentation also provides preliminary findings for the analysis being carried out by OCLC Research of the RLUK collective collection.

Library futures: converging and diverging directions for public and academic ...

The major influence on library futures is the changing character of their user communities. As patterns of research, learning and personal development change in a network environment so library services need to change. At the same time, libraries are focused on engaging with their communities more strongly - getting into their work and learning flows. This means that libraries are becoming more unlike each other, they are diverging as they meet the specific needs of their communities. Research libraries diverge from academic libraries, and each is different from urban public libraries, and so on. At the same time, at a broader level libraries are experiencing similar pressures. The need to engage more strongly with their communities. The need to assess what they do. The need to configure space around experiences rather than around collections. Libraries are converging around some of these issues. This presentation will consider the future of libraries from the point of view of convergence and divergence between types of libraries.

Rachel Frick, OCLC Executive Director of the OCLC Research Library Partnership, reviews some of the broad agenda items and recent publications related to the work of OCLC Research. Rachel is then joined for two presentations on specific research topics. First, Sharon Streams (OCLC Director of WebJunction) and Monika Sengul-Jones (OCLC Wikipedian-in-Residence) present on “Public Libraries and Wikipedia.” Next, Kenning Arlitsch (Dean, Montana State University Library) and Jeff Mixter (OCLC Senior Software Engineer) share their findings on “Accurate Institutional Repository Download Measurement using RAMP, the Repository Analytics and Metrics Portal.”

The edge of the world. Theta 2013: the Higher Education Technology Agenda. Hobart, Tasmania, 7-10 April, 2013. The network continues to reconfigure personal and organizational relationships. Libraries face three important challenges in this environment. 1. Rightscaling infrastructure. Libraries were predominantly ‘institution-scale’ – they provided services at the level of the institution for their local users. However, their users now look to the network for information services (e.g. Google Scholar, Wikipedia, …). And libraries now look to the network to collaborate or to externalize services (e.g. HathiTrust, cloud-based discovery or systems, shared systems infrastructure, …). In this environment the need for local infrastructure declines (e.g. extensive print collections, redundantly deployed local systems which provide necessary but not distinctive services). The scale advantage manifests itself in both impact and efficiency. 2. The shift to engagement. Users used to build their workflows around libraries. Now the library needs to build services around user workflows, as those workflows form around network services. Libraries used to acquire and organize ‘published’ materials. Now they are engaged with the full range of creation, management and disclosure of learning and scholarly resources. Library spaces were configured around print collections; now they are configured around experiences, expertise, and specialist facilities. These are all examples of how libraries are reallocating resource and effort to engage more strongly with the learning and research lives of their users, improving the learning experience and making research more productive and research outputs more visible. 3. Institutional innovation Innovation is important, especially to support greater engagement. But in many ways the most important form of innovation is institutional. Libraries have to develop new and routine ways of collaborating to achieve their goals. At the same time they have to negotiate internal boundaries and forge new structures within institutions. In each case, they are developing new ‘relationship architectures’. Think for example of the institutional innovation required to move to shared systems and collections in the Orbis Cascade Alliance or 2CUL for example. Or think of the innovative approach which makes new relationships within institutions (with Learning and Teaching Support, with the Office of Research, the University Press, emerging e-research infrastructure, IT, etc, for example, or with various educational or social services in a public setting). Evolving such relationships requires an enterprising approach and ensures continual learning.

"Librarian building blocks" will explore recent changes and needs in librarianship, introduce strategies for learning new skills, and inspire participants to implement these skills. This presentation is for a general audience and will cover skills for all libraries. To build the ideal librarian, we determined what skills and knowledge a contemporary librarian needs to succeed. Since job postings and MLIS curriculum reflect current, popular trends in librarianship, we developed a data harvesting Python script that gathered the data for more than 600 librarian job postings and MLIS curriculum content. Based on this data, we will present which skills are being taught and which skills need to be taught. The presentation will explore what these changes in technology and librarianship mean for current librarians and how they can stay up to date in the continuously evolving field of librarianship.

Sometimes it requires flexibility, alertness, and the ability to adapt. Academic libraries are in the midst of a digital transformation, but in this transitional period some real tensions demand strategic nuance. An expert in the changing roles of the library, scholarly publisher, and learned society, keynote speaker Roger Schonfeld will lead us through the three tensions underlying the changing library environment. Each of these tensions is a budgetary tension, and each of them is a systems tension, and for each of them the library would benefit from a more sophisticated engagement by publishers and vendors.

The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

The identity of the library is closely bound with its collections. In a print world, this made sense, as the central role of the library was to place materials close to the user and arrange them for effective use. However, in a network environment this is no longer the case. Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President, Membership and Research, and Chief Strategist at the Online Computer Library Center, will discuss the following three trends that are changing the character of library collections: The facilitated collection, where the library connects users to resources of interest to their research and learning needs, whether or not they are assembled locally. The collective collection, where libraries begin to think about moving to shared environments to manage their collections and assuming collective responsibility for stewardship of the scholarly record. The inside-out collection, where libraries work with other campus partners to support the creation, management and disclosure of institutional materials—research data, special collections, and so on. Here the library supports the creative enterprise of scholarship directly. Together, these trends are changing how we think about collections, libraries, and services to their users. Baker, former Vice Chancellor for Scholarly Resources & Dean of University Libraries, led in the areas of networked information and resource sharing.

The facilitated collection: collections and collecting in a network environment

We often think of collections as local – whether owned or licensed. Increasingly this picture is changing in several ways. Libraries are sharing responsibility for collections. Libraries are providing access to materials they do not own, but which are available to their users (freely available digital book collections for example). Demand driven acquisitions changes the view of local collections. Institutions are also thinking about how to manage locally produced materials (research data for example) and support access across institutions. This trend is supported by changes as discovery is peeled away from local collections. This presentation discusses these trends, and collections and discovery change in a network environment. Presented at the CONUL Conference, July 2015, Athlone, Ireland by Barry Houlihan, NUI Galway Abstract "Learning through encountering is a widening facet for archive collections and their users at present. Through teaching, independent research, online publication and exhibition of material as well of the digitised artefact, the integration of unique collections into the learning space is affording new opportunities and possibilities for projecting the archive to a new and widening user base. This is part of the commitment in developing user experience of learning through engagement in an embedded manner with unique archival collections. From subject areas of theatre, literature, Northern Ireland conflict and society, the geography and culture of the West of Ireland, among others, this talk will explore the changing presence of archives as and in research from undergraduate to postgraduate and academic research and teaching, through digital and traditional means. Shifting methods of engagement, through cataloguing standards and access to finding aids, key-word cataloguing, digital access, linked-collections for research, outreach and advocacy, are all facilitating greater awareness of collections among researchers but also an awareness of the strategies and benefits of archival usage in research through various media. With such increasing volumes of material, data and modes of access, a greater emphasis must also come in mediating that deluge for the user. Recent developments has seen the archives and archive service of the Hardiman Library become research partners with academic teaching, projects and planning but with the archivist as mediator between information content and user engagement. These interventions are key to ensuring relevancy of archives in research, at a time where we are witnessing a redefining of engagement Libraries and their services among users. Archive literacy, being the skillset of the researcher when encountering, navigating and utilising the collection content in varying media and format is also undergoing a radical change. This paper will address these current questions and issues and highlight the work of information professionals as curators of unique collections and the role of mediation between researcher and object. " Biography Barry Houlihan is an archivist at the James Hardiman Library at National University of Ireland, Galway, where he has catalogued the archives of Professor Kevin Boyle, Human Rights Academic, Lawyer and Activist; the archive of Druid Theatre Company; the Galway Arts Festival, and others. He is a Project group member of the Abbey Theatre Digitisation Project. Barry’s interests include promoting new ways of engagement with archives, archives in research and digital access to collections. He is also currently working on a Phd focusing on the memory and archival record of theatre, politics and society in the 1960s and 1970s.”

The term ‘digital preservation’ isn’t particularly ‘sexy’ on its own, conjuring up images of an airless room with carefully calibrated technology, or a computer locked tightly away in a safe. But digital preservation actually provides the entry point to a wealth of collections, and ensures that these collections are organised, accessible, and consistently available for the foreseeable future. This talk will address the importance of digital preservation to scholarly inquiry, and focus on the role that trusted digital collections play in humanities and social sciences research.

This presentation describes how the Archiving Reproductive Health project at the Digital Repository of Ireland can be used as a FAIR data resource for humanities researchers. It summarises the project progress to date and explain how ARH's digital collections can be used by researchers to build databases or data tools, can be searched using standardised vocabularies, and its outputs shared as openly licensed publications. It was created by Clare Lanigan, Preetam Singhvi and Dr Lorraine Grimes of the ARH project and delivered by Clare Lanigan at the DARIAH Annual Event 2023 (https://annualevent.dariah.eu/) in Budapest on 8 June 2023.

The webinar focused on archival initiatives and participatory projects that aim to train or support community groups in using video to tell personal stories, bring about social change, or archive and preserve activism and advocacy work. The presentation focuses on Mapping Memories, a participatory media initiative that offered over a hundred young individuals the opportunity to recount their stories of refugee experiences on their own terms.

Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
