7. Narrative
What’s the story?
An admitted Sadist leading a life with a dull desk
job, channels his inner compulsions, during the night, as a
professional interrogator, brutally and psychological
extracting bits of crucial information from his "clients".
His closest friend, a compulsive Trophy Hunter and
ruthless Retrieval Specialist feeds Mark's compulsions
with fresh interrogation subjects. Mark's world is
threatened with the introduction of compulsive voyeur
Cassandra Morrissey.

9. Technical
• Compulsions uses a wide range of camera
angles including over the shoulder, point of
view, close up, establishing shots, and extreme
close ups. The next slide shows a few of these.

• Compulsions use good editing techniques to
make the programme run smoothly and
understandable. The flashbacks are easy to
interpret and so are the point of view editing
techniques.
12. Sound
• When scenes take place in the warehouse
location, an echo is used to emphasise the
remote-ness of the place and that no matter
how much ‘clients’ scream, they cant be
heard.
• Compulsions also use a lot of voice overs. This
helps us interpret what is happening when
there are no vocal lines in the script.

Mark's world is threatened with the introduction of compulsive voyeur Cassandra Morrissey.
Compulsions is a realist web drama, which also includes flashbacks. Every episode ends with open endings, so the audience are enticed and excited to watch the next episode. The shots above show Mark during the day, at work, then a flashback to the previous night during the interrogation of a client.
The first episode ends with the shot of Mark opening up a pair of plyers and saying ‘now, lets begin’. The second episode ends with the line ‘a friend would buy him a drink, and untie him...but I, am not his friend”-and Mark hits the client with a chair. The third episode ends with the introduction of a new character, in which she starts hitting a women, (in the boot of a car), saying “my mum wanted me to be a princess…I wanted to be a fire breathing dragon”. Episode 4 ends with a shot of an interrogated women shouting the name of somebody. Mark looks over, puzzled. This makes the audience wonder what is going through Mark’s mind.
