Weather forecasting
Meteorologists make systematic observations of weather conditions and make
weather forecasts .The meteorologists of PAGASA (Phil. Atmospheric,
Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration) do this observation 24
hours a day, and also receive additional information some other groups. In
some countries, weather predictions for the next 7-10 days are possible
because their instruments and training are very adequate. Observations on
weather conditions are gathered in different weather stations. Then, once all
the necessary data are collected, they are analyzed and the weather
predictions for the next 24 hours are made. The weather forecast is relayed to
TV and radio stations, to airports, marine vessels, and airplanes. Knowing the
weather must be important to everybody. Our activities depend on the kind of
weather we have. The type of clothes we should wear, the places we should go
to, even the time or day we should travel is affected by weather. Because of
the weather’s importance, the meteorologists have developed ways to forecast
weather conditions. Forecast for the next 12 to 24 hrs. Are correct more than
80% of the time. Long-range forecasts for the next week or month are less
accurate. These forecasts indicate general trends of temperature and rainfall.
That means people are warmed whether it is expected to be warmer or colder
than normal; or whether it is expected dry or to have rains for the next days
2. Weather Forecasts and our Everyday life
The weather affects our lives every day. For ex., it can have an impact on what type of clothing we wear and
how we spend our free time. Would you like to travel by boat or by plane when there’s a storm coming?
Would you like to play baseball in the field if it will rain? Will you wear thick clothes if it will be sunny? To
dress appropriately during a rainy day, wear thick clothes or jackets. If you have to travel, listen to weather
forecasts first. If a typhoon is coming flights are cancelled, ships find safe shelter, and people stay home.
Weather also affects agriculture, transportation, and industry. Typhoons can damage crops and destroy
roads and bridges, causing a rise in the price of vegetables and other crops. Floods often create hazardous
driving conditions. Thick fog may slow traffic on the roads and cause delays at airports. Severe weather can
damage houses, buildings, & other infrastructures & can take lives. Knowing the weather is also important
to farmers and fisher folk. Farmers who are familiar with the weather in their places work efficiently. The
farmers plant only during the rainy season. If they know that a typhoon is coming, they can save their crops
by early harvesting. They also secure their homes and trees by putting strong supports. Fisher folk also need
to know the weather in their line of work. They can avoid getting drowned in the sea if they know a typhoon is
coming. During Habagat and Amihan (Southwest and Northeast monsoons, respectively) the fisherfolk know
where to get more fingerlings and fishes.
