With such terrible numbers of the amount of waste being dumped into Landfill or in the ocean, there is a worldwide campaign going on to create awareness about the segregation of waste and recycling. Segregation of waste involves separating Biodegradable wastes such as Food waste, Garden wastes, etc from Non-biodegradable such as Plastic, Metal, etc. Once segregated, the Biodegradable waste can be subjected to processes such as Composting, Biogas production, etc. Non-Biodegradable wastes are best recycled into new products. Now, this sounds good so far right. No, it isn’t! The population is growing at an exponential rate. This eventually accounts for the generation of waste at a rate faster than it can be recycled. Thus Municipalities, being helpless, dumps the large percentage of waste into Landfill. But there are few things more threatening than Population explosion such as, Lack of awareness among people towards Good recycling practices. People must be informed that at least half of the things they discard as waste doesn’t go for recycling, but gets added over the heaps of landfill. Recall 3R’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
