Water is essential for life and can be found in rivers, lakes, oceans, and as water vapor in the air. It exists in three forms: solid ice, liquid water, and gas water vapor. Water has unique properties like being a universal solvent, having a high heat capacity to store heat, and existing as a liquid between 1-100 degrees Celsius. Its molecular structure of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom gives water polar properties that allow it to dissolve other polar substances but not nonpolar ones.

Water is life. It is apart of nature and is very necessary to our life. Water can be found
everywhere; in rivers, lakes, ponds, seas, oceans even in the air as water vapour.
Water is in everything. We use it to cook, bathe, wash, clean and many other uses. It is
very useful in a chemist’s life because water is the base of many chemical solutions.

Water can be found in three different forms; solid, liquid and gas.
The solid form of water is what we call ice and this version of water has tightly packed
water molecules.
The pure liquid form of water is water, pure H2O.
The gas form of water is called steam but the real name is water vapour. This vapour is
formed when the water liquid is heated and when heat is applied, the water molecules
will rise.

Water is a universal solvent. It can dissolve any gas, liquid or solid but those substances
must be polar. For example, ice is made of water which is polar and ice can be dissolved
in water but you cannot dissolve metal or plastic in water because they are non polar.
Therefore, polar and non polar don’t go together!
Water has a high heat capacity. Water can hold heat very well and this is evident in the
way how water stores heat in cold areas. For example, in Antarctica, there are ice bergs
and frozen lakes and seas all year round but how do aquatic animals live in these
conditions? Well, the sheet of ice that is on the seas and lakes actually raps heat under it
and the water beneath it dissolves the heat, making the water warm enough for aquatic
animals to live.

Water can be a habitat between the temperatures of 1°C and 99°C. this is so because if
water is at 0°C, it will start to freeze and if it is a 100°C, it will start to boil. So in between
both temperatures is just fine.
The sign for water is H2O, which means two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of
oxygen. These atoms make up one water molecule. The hydrogen atoms have a positive
charge while the oxygen atom has a negative charge. This is what cause the attraction
between both atoms. It is just like a boy and girl, opposite gender but they attract each
other.
