SAS integration with NoSQL data
We are living in the world of abundant data, so called “big data”. The term “big data” is closely associated with unstructured data. They are called “unstructured” or NoSQL data because they do not fit neatly in a traditional row-column relational database. A NoSQL (Not only SQL or Non-relational SQL) database is the type of database that can handle unstructured data. For example, a NoSQL database can store unstructured data such as XML (Extensible Markup Language), JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) or RDF (Resource Description Framework) files.
If an enterprise is able to extract unstructured data from NoSQL databases and transfer it to the SAS environment for analysis, this will produce tremendous value, especially from a big data solutions standpoint. This paper will show how unstructured data is stored in the NoSQL databases and ways to transfer it to the SAS environment for analysis. First, the paper will introduce the NoSQL database. For example, NoSQL databases can store unstructured data such as XML, JSON or RDF files. Secondly, the paper will show how the SAS system connects to NoSQL databases using REST (Representational State Transfer) API (Application Programming Interface). For example, SAS programmers can use the PROC HTTP option to extract XML or JSON files through REST API from the NoSQL database. Finally, the paper will show how SAS programmers can convert XML and JSON files to SAS datasets for analysis. For example, SAS programmers can create XMLMap files using XMLV2 LIBNAME engine and convert the extracted XML files to SAS datasets.

Since mid-2016, Spark-as-a-Service has been available to researchers in Sweden from the Rise SICS ICE Data Center at www.hops.site. In this session, Dowling will discuss the challenges in building multi-tenant Spark structured streaming applications on YARN that are metered and easy-to-debug. The platform, called Hopsworks, is in an entirely UI-driven environment built with only open-source software. Learn how they use the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana) for logging and debugging running Spark streaming applications; how they use Grafana and InfluxDB for monitoring Spark streaming applications; and, finally, how Apache Zeppelin can provide interactive visualizations and charts to end-users.
This session will also show how Spark applications are run within a ‘project’ on a YARN cluster with the novel property that Spark applications are metered and charged to projects. Projects are securely isolated from each other and include support for project-specific Kafka topics. That is, Kafka topics are protected from access by users that are not members of the project. Databricks with R: Deep Dive
In this presentation we'll explain how to use the R programming language with Spark using a Databricks notebook and the SparkR package. We'll discuss how to push data wrangling to the Spark nodes for massive scale and how to bring it back to a single node so we can use open source packages on the data. We'll demonstrate converting SQL tables into R distributed data frames and how to convert R data frames to SQL tables. pg_prefaulter: Scaling WAL Performance
Pg_prefaulter is a tool that helps eliminate replication lag and reduce startup times. It works by prefaulting WAL files on the follower nodes before the regular replication process applies the WAL. This is done by parsing the WAL files on the primary using pg_xlogdump to determine which database relations (tables, indexes) need to be prefaulted. Pg_prefaulter then issues prefetch system calls in parallel to warm the OS caches and disk buffers for those relations, improving performance of the downstream replication and recovery processes.
fluentd -- the missing log collector
Fluentd is an open source log collector that allows flexible collection and routing of log data. It uses JSON format for log messages and supports many input and output plugins. Fluentd can collect logs from files, network services, and applications before routing them to storage and analysis services like MongoDB, HDFS, and Treasure Data. The open source project has grown a large community contributing over 100 plugins to make log collection and processing easier.

These innovations have enabled engineers to build data infrastructure at scale, many of them fail to fill their scalable systems with useful data, struggling to unify data silos or failing to collect logs from thousands of servers and millions of containers. Fluentd and Embulk are two projects that I've been involved to solve the unsexy yet critical problem of data collection and transport. In this talk, I will give an overview of Fluentd and Embulk and give a survey of how they are used at companies like Microsoft and Atlassian or in projects like Docker and Kubernetes.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
