Walden University strives to make a positive social impact and that is directly reflected in it’s degree programs, choice of professors, coursework, and commitments. A core commitment that Walden makes when the university develops and improves the curriculum is ensuring that their students can apply new skills, expand their networks, gain deeper knowledge, and consider a variety of perspectives in order to better address practical problems at an individual level as well as within their organizations, communities, and society at large (Walden, 2015). I do believe this is incorporated in the curriculum in the Master of Psychology program. Some of the skills that have been acquired that I can apply to my field in the future to make positive change are learning how to gather data appropriately, knowing if the research is justified, grounded, and scientific, as well as knowing the distinct benefits and shortcomings of quantitative vs qualitative vs mixed method approach research. The extent to which my newly acquired research and psychology knowledge and skills from this class and program that can support my role as an agent of positive social change in my future could be using today's social determinants as an intervention, promotion, and research avenue for healthy behavior change. Social determinats of health, as defined by WHO, “ are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age”. (WHO,2017). The social determinants now are the new wave of mobile apps, online ads, and dating sites that make hook ups, relationships, and meet ups a lot easier and at the same time increase risky behaviors. The new social norm is the internet, mobile apps, and computer generated ads and communication. Health professionals are doing everything they can outside of the cyber-world, but perhaps the next step is to gain more of a presence online? Therefor the next step in my future of health psychology, health promotion and disease prevention, could be prevention, intervention, and communication using this new social norm in the digital age. Strategies for Developing an Academic Portfolio Academic portfolios help nursing students at all educational levels. It allows them to be set apart from others in the job market after graduation. Portfolios provide guidelines for an individual throughout the student’s educational journey, after graduation, and in their career. According to Mollahadi et al. (2018), portfolios provide the best work and show the trajectory of a learner’s educational growth. Utilization of my portfolio will provide understanding, and show advancement, and progress that has been made. It will also aid in providing further guidance on the key areas where improvement is needed and allow for self-evaluations. I will incorporate two strategies to develop my portfolio—using technology and having a social change initiative because both align with my personal goals and those of Walden University (Walden University, n.d.). One of the strategies, I will use in the development of my academic portfolio is the utilization of information technology tools. I will make the document easily shareable and accessible to receive more feedback from peers and instructors. To attain this goal, I will use digital tools to create an e-Portfolio for my accomplishments. Collins and O'Brien (2018) explain that e-portfolios that feature multimedia artifacts and hyperlinks foster interaction and encourage instructors to give positive feedback. Instructor feedback provides well-informed responses that are grounded in experience and competence; hence, it is essential for my growth as a nurse. Thus, my e-Portfolio should be interactive and accessible. In combination with coursework, I plan to initiate a social change initiative which will be part of my final school project. Having a social change will demonstrate my clinical competence and ability to apply the concepts we have learned in class and receive feedback from the society. Nurses have a social responsibility for the communities that they serve which can be linked to one of their main roles as a patient advocates. According to Phillips et al. (2020), nurses are expected to apply a holistic approach to patient care by seeking deeper insights into the root causes of illnesses, such as poverty and other social issues. I am passionate about mental health and its relationship with low socioeconomic status. Also, I would like to initiate a social initiative within the community that will focus on mental health among ethnic minorities in rural areas. This patient population with mental health issues is more likely to lack the resources and ability to access treatment, medications, and quality healthcare. I will develop a program that reaches out to them to create awareness of the importance of mental health wellness and reduce the stigma related to how society views patients with mental health issues and provide unbiased psychiatric care. Importance of Social, Biological, and Genetic Determinants I do not think that social determinants are necessarily more important than the biological and genetic determinants of health for health educators to understand. The biological makeup of a person is important, a person may have been born with 'HIV, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene (risk of breast and ovarian cancer),' (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Knowing these underlying conditions about a person will significantly affect their future. Genetic conditions that they are born with could greatly influence what conditions they must be raised in, the level of care they will require, what support they will need, and much more. Although understanding genetic determinants is important, understanding social determinants are equally important to a person's welfare. Social determinants help us understand hose affected by them because they allow us to grasp a clearer understanding of why someone behaves a certain way if it is outside the scope of a social norm. A person who does not have access to adequate education, health care, community support, or is exposed to criminal activity and violence may be steered down a path of self-destruction because the environment they grew up in does not support healthy behavior (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Influence of Health Education There are many opportunities for health educators to influence education to improve the living situations of the people that are most affected by social determinants. Establishing community programs is critical in regards to those exposed to violent situations because it presents an opportunity to socialize with people that one, wants to help them succeed and two, socialize with peers that also have the desire for a better future. A mentorship program will allow for one-on-one interactions with affected people to encourage them to continue on the right path to a bright future. Outreach programs to at-risk youth and teens will initiate the connection between those at-risk and those that want to ensure those teens will make for positively influential citizens. Teaching youth about job opportunities and how to function in the workforce is another way to create an environment that encourages them to be productive members of society. Health education needs to encourage different avenues to deter negative social determinants to create environments where all people can be successful. This project demonstrates my knowledge and research about social workers advocating for foster youth aging out of the foster care system. This information was helpful to have completed prior to my job at The Place of Forsyth when I worked with a student in the foster care system a year out of aging out of the system. This project connected to the Families and Individuals in Societal Contexts competency of the Certified Family Life Educator matrix due to the adaptability of the foster youth learning what is necessary and important to living life on their own. It also related to the Interpersonal Relationships competency in the social worker building trust and rapport with the youth and guiding them on how to do that themselves.

Response for each one is 200 words. 1) At the start of this course, I did not think I would appreciate the community health nurse as much as I do now. When signing up for this course I really did not know what to expect, but by judging by the name I figured that it would consist of busy work rather than important education for the development of my career, and now that it is nearing the end, boy was I wrong! This course has been able to teach me so much important information, not just of my community, but the importance of community education, community risks, diseases that affect the community, and even made me realize of many things I experienced growing up in the community that happened, but was not aware of its importance. The community health course has been able to expand my knowledge and mentality of the healthcare process and those that are involved in it, outside of the healthcare setting. Course goals and personal goals were attained during this course. The course goals specified in our syllabus included the nurse role in meeting emergent needs, exploring history, legality, social aspects, and nursing practice of the healthcare setting, predict, plan, analyze, implement public health surveillance, etc. These goals were met mostly because of the research the course would prompt us to explain. The prompted course work would set the foundation of the research, but the actual research part would open the doors of endless information on the subject and would lead up to different topics that were different, yet relatable to the information of the foundation. This method was able to help me build on top of information already known or learned and expand the knowledge previously acquired and was able to continue expanding my knowledge on the subject. The relevance of the topics with today’s modern concerns and realistic factors made it interesting to continue the research, making this course a breeze for me. The information gained in this community health nursing course will be always an influence in the day to day living and career practice. I’m now able to evaluate my community and the people included in it, such as senior citizens, LGBT, and communicable diseases, and have an understanding of the amount of work, research, and planning that went behind some of the simplest situation. With a greater understanding of the community, I could impact those around me with basic facts and knowledge with the hopes of one day preventing a disease or reducing the risk of contracting a communicable disease in my community. 2) The objectives for this course are: 1) to examine nursing roles to meet the health needs of individuals, families, communities, and populations. To understand how we impact our communities and how our communities impact us, we don't have to look no further than the concept of socialization. Socialization is the process whereby we as individuals acquire cultural and social skills essential for us to survive in society - language, knowledge, traditions, ways of doing, thinking and making, views about the world, religion, philosophies - all these we learn 2 ways: formally and informally. At home we learn from our parents & relatives, in school from our teachers and from our classmates, in the community - in church, in market places, in sports clubs, in restaurants - generally in places or sites where human interaction happens. When we interact, we talk to each other, we learn from each other. Just as we observe others, they also observe us and we together experience the interaction. How we react in it, what we learn from it leads us to create meaning, new ideas and information that we add to our knowledge database, our experience. This shapes us - our ways, our personalities. Formally we can learn from a rigid set of instructions like in classrooms or on training programs as companies provide their employees. Informally, we always get socialized every day, as long as we interact with others or learn about our world. We even get socialized through the media - TV, radio, internet - we get to know ourselves, our world and discover who we are and who we are not via this. This is because society is a social agency where socialization happens and we as individuals are social agents. Drawing from the notion of social agency, it means that as an individual, I impact people around me be they immediate (i.e. my family, friends) or secondary (people in my church, people in my school). Public Health as a social concern from an individual viewpoint is something that a person chooses to pay attention to, for the purpose of managing risk for the self and for his family/community. If for example I have an outgoing personality, and I am genetically predisposed to have the allergies on the onset of Spring due to Pollen and I suffer from it, I would more than likely take up an advocacy to help children and others who suffer the same, especially if I am in that particular stage of life - the late adult stage where I am seeking to care for others, to leave a legacy. I would probably band together with others who have the same concerns and create awareness programs in the community or to move certain things to happen - i.e. free clinics to help sufferers, creation of Smartphone Apps that measure pollen concentration in the air, etc. Essentially, individual factors are those attributes that one has that can likely impact his or her social agent actions with regards to a particular concern (i.e. Public Health) to the self and to the community. It affects their daily relationship, academics, and personal lives. Divorce can increase the risk of mental health problems in children and adolescence. Regardless of age, gender, and culture, studies show children of divorced parents experience increased psychological problems. Divorce may trigger an adjustment disorder in children that resolves within a few months. But, studies have also found depression and anxiety rates are higher in children from divorced parents. According to our research conducted, children of divorced parents scored significantly lower than children of continuously married parents on measures of academic achievement, conduct, psychological adjustment, self-concept, and social relations. More recent research continues to suggest an ongoing gap between children of divorced parents and continuously married parents. The negative impact of divorce can reach into adulthood and even later in adult married life, with potential increases in poverty, educational failure, risky sexual behavior, unplanned pregnancies, earlier marriage or cohabitation, marital discord, and divorce The extent to which the negative outcomes associated with parental divorce reflect dysfunctional processes that arise before parental separation, such as interparental conflict.
