• writing a profile piece laid out like a magazine article and written in a journalistic style.
Once you’ve chosen the person you want to profile, use reporter-style questions to start digging into their background and researching the work they do:
Who is this person and how are they engaged in social or cultural entrepreneurship? (Where do they work? Where did they go to school? What attracted this person to their career? Who or what communities are they advocating for? What sorts of change are they attempting to make in the world?)
• Where does this person work? (What sort of organization/s? With what sort of affiliations?)
• What does this person do? (What are some of the things they do as part of their work? Who do they interact with? How do they spend their days?)
• What are some of the impacts of their work? (Has their social or cultural entrepreneurial work resulted in change in the world, media attention, securing funds, etc.?)

Despite the quantity of information online and in print, most of us have very little idea what other
people do for a living, or how some of the everyday objects we buy are produced, distributed, sold
or disposed of. Structuring a creative non-fiction essay around a day in the life of volunteers at the
raptor center, or the janitorial staff on campus, or the process by which a surfboard is designed
and manufactures, affords insights into lives and experiences we might otherwise never learn
about or understand. Your aim is to document your subjects’ lives as fully as you can, and as
faithfully as you can. Your report needs to be authoritative, based on facts and evidence and first-
hand observation. And it needs to be revealing—you need to dig beyond the surface to discover
truths that might not be obvious to the casual bystander.
The subject of your informative profile is open, but you need to select a group, or a place, or an
event where you can conduct interviews yourself (primary sources) in addition to undertaking

Doctoral students often ask, “How do I decide what theory to use in my dissertation or DSW capstone study?” Sometimes, researchers select their theory based on the study population. For example, if a researcher is studying middle-age adults, it may make sense to use a life span development theory. Or perhaps the researcher is studying characteristics inherent to a particular stage of life; then it may also make sense to use a life span development theory.Before you choose a theory to apply to your study population, consider whether the theoretical concepts or constructs reflect a Western perspective and are insensitive to the needs of the target population.
