Importance of Social, Biological, and Genetic Determinants I do not think that social determinants are necessarily more important than the biological and genetic determinants of health for health educators to understand. The biological makeup of a person is important, a person may have been born with 'HIV, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene (risk of breast and ovarian cancer),' (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Knowing these underlying conditions about a person will significantly affect their future. Genetic conditions that they are born with could greatly influence what conditions they must be raised in, the level of care they will require, what support they will need, and much more. Although understanding genetic determinants is important, understanding social determinants are equally important to a person's welfare. Social determinants help us understand hose affected by them because they allow us to grasp a clearer understanding of why someone behaves a certain way if it is outside the scope of a social norm. A person who does not have access to adequate education, health care, community support, or is exposed to criminal activity and violence may be steered down a path of self-destruction because the environment they grew up in does not support healthy behavior (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Influence of Health Education There are many opportunities for health educators to influence education to improve the living situations of the people that are most affected by social determinants. Establishing community programs is critical in regards to those exposed to violent situations because it presents an opportunity to socialize with people that one, wants to help them succeed and two, socialize with peers that also have the desire for a better future. A mentorship program will allow for one-on-one interactions with affected people to encourage them to continue on the right path to a bright future. Outreach programs to at-risk youth and teens will initiate the connection between those at-risk and those that want to ensure those teens will make for positively influential citizens. Teaching youth about job opportunities and how to function in the workforce is another way to create an environment that encourages them to be productive members of society. Health education needs to encourage different avenues to deter negative social determinants to create environments where all people can be successful. Conclusion Social, biological, and genetic determinants are equally important for health educators to understand because each component holds value in determining the future of a child. The extent to which my newly acquired research and psychology knowledge and skills from this class and program that can support my role as an agent of positive social change in my future could be using today's social determinants as an intervention, promotion, and research avenue for healthy behavior change. Social determinats of health, as defined by WHO, “ are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age”. (WHO,2017). The social determinants now are the new wave of mobile apps, online ads, and dating sites that make hook ups, relationships, and meet ups a lot easier and at the same time increase risky behaviors. The new social norm is the internet, mobile apps, and computer generated ads and communication. Health professionals are doing everything they can outside of the cyber-world, but perhaps the next step is to gain more of a presence online? Therefor the next step in my future of health psychology, health promotion and disease prevention, could be prevention, intervention, and communication using this new social norm in the digital age. The knowledge gained in this class as well as the Master of Psychology at Walden University will certainly aid me in this venture and direction.

To understand how we impact our communities and how our communities impact us, we don't have to look no further than the concept of socialization. Socialization is the process whereby we as individuals acquire cultural and social skills essential for us to survive in society - language, knowledge, traditions, ways of doing, thinking and making, views about the world, religion, philosophies - all these we learn 2 ways: formally and informally. At home we learn from our parents & relatives, in school from our teachers and from our classmates, in the community - in church, in market places, in sports clubs, in restaurants - generally in places or sites where human interaction happens. When we interact, we talk to each other, we learn from each other. Just as we observe others, they also observe us and we together experience the interaction. How we react in it, what we learn from it leads us to create meaning, new ideas and information that we add to our knowledge database, our experience. This shapes us - our ways, our personalities. Formally we can learn from a rigid set of instructions like in classrooms or on training programs as companies provide their employees. Informally, we always get socialized every day, as long as we interact with others or learn about our world. We even get socialized through the media - TV, radio, internet - we get to know ourselves, our world and discover who we are and who we are not via this. This is because society is a social agency where socialization happens and we as individuals are social agents.
Drawing from the notion of social agency, it means that as an individual, I impact people around me be they immediate (i.e. my family, friends) or secondary (people in my church, people in my school). Public Health as a social concern from an individual viewpoint is something that a person chooses to pay attention to, for the purpose of managing risk for the self and for his family/community. If for example I have an outgoing personality, and I am genetically predisposed to have the allergies on the onset of Spring due to Pollen and I suffer from it, I would more than likely take up an advocacy to help children and others who suffer the same, especially if I am in that particular stage of life - the late adult stage where I am seeking to care for others, to leave a legacy. I would probably band together with others who have the same concerns and create awareness programs in the community or to move certain things to happen - i.e. free clinics to help sufferers, creation of Smartphone Apps that measure pollen concentration in the air, etc. Essentially, individual factors are those attributes that one has that can likely impact his or her social agent actions with regards to a particular concern (i.e. Public Health) to the self and to the community. of life in the continuum of life as well as a stage with its
own characteristics and tasks. All the roles within social
work practice can be adapted to this population. In addi-
tion, social workers working with older adults and their
families must be cognizant of the specific issues that are
associated with aging and older adulthood. The issue of
loss on many levels is a frequent topic. One area of loss
that is not frequently addressed is the loss associated with
where one lives. The word place can have several mean-
ings. One meaning has to do with where one lives. The
second meaning of loss is about one’s status and role—
place-in-society. For older adults both meanings become
important issues as they and their families navigate the
decisions that have to be made. While residence is based on
the level of independence and competence of the older
adult, the issue of place-as-status is a constant frustration
for older adults. Issues of leaving one’s place and losing
status in the eyes of others evoke a myriad of feelings
depending on the particular older adult. But given that as
one ages there are naturally some physical and mental
acuity losses, every older adult is subject to feelings of
sadness, depression, hopelessness, and even anger. These
feelings are natural responses to loss. Among the roles of
social workers working with older adults is one of helping
a mourning process move to a healthy acceptance of one’s
aging and planning rather than devolving into major
depression.

Social Determinants of Health and Rural Nursing

Social determinants of health is a term defined by the Healthy People 2020 (Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d., section Understanding) as “…conditions in the
environment in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age that affect a wide
range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks”. In this definition “place”
matters, as does race/ethnicity, age, education, social support etc. – all of the factors that are part
of one’s socio-economic status. Thus being a rural dweller alone does not put your health at risk
but if you are a rural dweller with little social and economic resources you will have a higher risk
for ill health. You may need to use more resources to access health care than someone in a more
urban place, simply because of limited accessibility. For those living in a rural setting without
reliable transportation being able to access health care is more arduous than for those with access
to transportation as well as health care.
Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge on the history of nursing can connect the
profession and past efforts and successes in enhancing population health through work on the
social determinants of health. This work can be seen in urban areas by nurses such as Lillian
Wald at Henry House in New York and rural areas in the work of Mary Breckenridge and the
Frontier Nursing Service. In both cases nursing was caring for individuals and families but also
looking at the macro level problems of poverty, lack of formal education, poor housing, lack of
access to health care; all of which would be deemed today as improving the social determinants
of health. Since the 1920’s with the work of Wald and Breckinridge we have made inroads into
the health status of people in the US. In general we have better living situations for individuals

and families, more education and more wealth. However, the upward trajectory in health status
over the years is not carrying all and Healthy People 2020 (n.d.) promotes a place based
organizing framework that addresses five major determinants of health: a) Economic Stability, b)
Education, c) Social and Community Context, d) Health and Health Care, and e) Neighborhood
and Built Environment. Nursing has a clear role in providing health care beyond care of the

The theory of social capital emphasizes multiple dimensions inside the concept. For example, social capital can be divided into a behavioral/activity component (for example, participation) and a cognitive/perceptual component (for example, trust). These are respectively being referred to as structural and cognitive social capital. . Structural and cognitive social capital can therefore refer to linkages and perceptions in relation to people who are akin to each other; such as people in one’s own community or people of alike socioeconomic status (referred to as bonding social capital), or to people who are poles apart; such as people outside one’s community or with a different social identity (known as bridging social capital). Social capital relations can also occur in ceremonial institutions such as between community and local government structures (termed linking social capital) .
Social capital is not a magic pill for improving society’s oral health but, it is a useful concept which focuses our attention on an important set of resources, inhering in relationships, networks and associations, which have previously been given insufficient attention in the social sciences and Dental literature. This is probably partly because they are not easy to categories, study and measure their effects quickly. The social capital perspective therefore broadcast us that if we normatively approve of the goal of enhancing population oral health, we cannot achieve this through material inputs alone, or simply through “technological fixes”, whether “forced” or magnanimously “approved” by those with superior resources. Drawing from the notion of social agency, it means that as an individual, I impact people around me be they immediate (i.e. my family, friends) or secondary (people in my church, people in my school). Public Health as a social concern from an individual viewpoint is something that a person chooses to pay attention to, for the purpose of managing risk for the self and for his family/community. If for example I have an outgoing personality, and I am genetically predisposed to have the allergies on the onset of Spring due to Pollen and I suffer from it, I would more than likely take up an advocacy to help children and others who suffer the same, especially if I am in that particular stage of life - the late adult stage where I am seeking to care for others, to leave a legacy. I would probably band together with others who have the same concerns and create awareness programs in the community or to move certain things to happen - i.e. free clinics to help sufferers, creation of Smartphone Apps that measure pollen concentration in the air, etc. Essentially, individual factors are those attributes that one has that can likely impact his or her social agent actions with regards to a particular concern (i.e. Public Health) to the self and to the community. families must be cognizant of the specific issues that are
associated with aging and older adulthood. The issue of
loss on many levels is a frequent topic. One area of loss
that is not frequently addressed is the loss associated with
where one lives. The word place can have several mean-
ings. One meaning has to do with where one lives. The
second meaning of loss is about one’s status and role—
place-in-society. For older adults both meanings become
important issues as they and their families navigate the
decisions that have to be made. While residence is based on
the level of independence and competence of the older
adult, the issue of place-as-status is a constant frustration
for older adults. Issues of leaving one’s place and losing
status in the eyes of others evoke a myriad of feelings
depending on the particular older adult. But given that as
one ages there are naturally some physical and mental
acuity losses, every older adult is subject to feelings of
sadness, depression, hopelessness, and even anger. These
feelings are natural responses to loss. Among the roles of
social workers working with older adults is one of helping
a mourning process move to a healthy acceptance of one’s
aging and planning rather than devolving into major
depression.

Social Determinants of Health and Rural Nursing

Social determinants of health is a term defined by the Healthy People 2020 (Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d., section Understanding) as “…conditions in the
environment in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship and age that affect a wide
range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks”. In this definition “place”
matters, as does race/ethnicity, age, education, social support etc. – all of the factors that are part
of one’s socio-economic status. Thus being a rural dweller alone does not put your health at risk
but if you are a rural dweller with little social and economic resources you will have a higher risk
for ill health. You may need to use more resources to access health care than someone in a more
urban place, simply because of limited accessibility. For those living in a rural setting without
reliable transportation being able to access health care is more arduous than for those with access
to transportation as well as health care.
Anyone with even a modicum of knowledge on the history of nursing can connect the
profession and past efforts and successes in enhancing population health through work on the
social determinants of health. This work can be seen in urban areas by nurses such as Lillian
Wald at Henry House in New York and rural areas in the work of Mary Breckenridge and the
Frontier Nursing Service. In both cases nursing was caring for individuals and families but also
looking at the macro level problems of poverty, lack of formal education, poor housing, lack of
access to health care; all of which would be deemed today as improving the social determinants
of health. Since the 1920’s with the work of Wald and Breckinridge we have made inroads into
the health status of people in the US. In general we have better living situations for individuals

and families, more education and more wealth. However, the upward trajectory in health status
over the years is not carrying all and Healthy People 2020 (n.d.) promotes a place based
organizing framework that addresses five major determinants of health: a) Economic Stability, b)
Education, c) Social and Community Context, d) Health and Health Care, and e) Neighborhood
and Built Environment. Nursing has a clear role in providing health care beyond care of the

Importance of Social, Biological, and Genetic Determinants I do not think that social determinants are necessarily more important than the biological and genetic determinants of health for health educators to understand. The biological makeup of a person is important, a person may have been born with 'HIV, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene (risk of breast and ovarian cancer),' (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Knowing these underlying conditions about a person will significantly affect their future. Genetic conditions that they are born with could greatly influence what conditions they must be raised in, the level of care they will require, what support they will need, and much more. Although understanding genetic determinants is important, understanding social determinants are equally important to a person's welfare. Social determinants help us understand hose affected by them because they allow us to grasp a clearer understanding of why someone behaves a certain way if it is outside the scope of a social norm. A person who does not have access to adequate education, health care, community support, or is exposed to criminal activity and violence may be steered down a path of self-destruction because the environment they grew up in does not support healthy behavior (Healthy People 2020, 2020). Influence of Health Education There are many opportunities for health educators to influence education to improve the living situations of the people that are most affected by social determinants. Establishing community programs is critical in regards to those exposed to violent
- 2. situations because it presents an opportunity to socialize with people that one, wants to help them succeed and two, socialize with peers that also have the desire for a better future. A mentorship program will allow for one-on-one interactions with affected people to encourage them to continue on the right path to a bright future. Outreach programs to at-risk youth and teens will initiate the connection between those at-risk and those that want to ensure those teens will make for positively influential citizens. Teaching youth about job opportunities and how to function in the workforce is another way to create an environment that encourages them to be productive members of society. Health education needs to encourage different avenues to deter negative social determinants to create environments where all people can be successful. Conclusion Social, biological, and genetic determinants are equally important for health educators to understand because each component holds value in determining the future of a child. Biological and genetic determinants are important for the medical aspect of their future whereas social determinants can influence how a person may act. Health education should get more involved in creating programs that help at-risk youth and ensuring that they have all opportunities to be successful in their future.
