A talk from the Main Stage at AWE USA 2019 - the World's #1 XR Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, California May 29-31, 2019.
Charlie Fink (XR Consultant, Forbes): Convergence
This is a historic moment. We are on the cusp of a new generation of mobile computing. Latency-free 5G broadband networks, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will converge in the next five years to change the world as we know it. Our devices will change dramatically and change us in ways no one can fully predict. Convergence tells the story of Augmented Reality, a new technology that’s seeping into every smartphone and every workplace. But the smartphone is just the beginning. We will soon wonder how we put up with its miserable form for so long. In this presentation of key ideas from his new book, author and Forbes columnist Charlie Fink will discuss how the convergence will lead to head-worn, interoperable AR/VR glasses and, ultimately, to wearable, invisible, computing. The book uses a kind of AR called "marker AR," to allow readers to use their smartphone to bring pages to life in surprising and entertaining ways to illustrate how the world, and everyone it, will be painted with data. More than a book about technology, this is about an evolutionary change in humankind.
Augmented reality apps run the gamut from interactive map overlays and virtual showrooms to real time night life guide. It uses each piece of software hones in on smartphone GPS and camera functionality to create a more immersive experience. Let's see How AppStudioz offers a wide range of augmented reality solutions and how its addressing business pain points using mobile solutions across various industries.
Extended Reality (XR): The End of Distance @ SXSWRori DuBoff
Even in today’s hyper-connected world, brands are faced with the challenge of distance: distance to people, distance to info, distance to experiences. How do they solve for “needed here, but exists there”?
This session will discuss how Extended Reality (XR) - Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality - can bridge the gap through relevant, immersive experiences - and when combined with A.I, the opportunity is endless. Join this session to explore how intelligent XR experiences will fundamentally change how brands connect with people.

AWE USA 2019: AR Cloud: Promises and pitfalls
Jason Fox | Microsoft
Jan-Erik Vinje | Open AR Cloud
In this talk Jan-Erik will present his vision of how AR Cloud tecnology can enable a digital upgrade of our shared physical reality and how that holds the promise of enhansing every aspect of our digital lives you can imagine and beyond. The AR industry needs this technology to be able to realize what futurist and sci-fi authors have been envisioning for the last few decades and what the speaker himself has been dreaming of since his teenage years. On the flip side of the great potential that AR Cloud holds for good, there is also the real risk of falling into "Black Mirror" scenarios. If we are careless about this technology things might descend towards a digital prison rather than a digital upgrade. Already we see how Shenzhen, China is using exponential technology to monitor and track every person everywhere - the invasiveness of this practice will become much worse if or when the authorities deploy AR-Cloud technology. Towards the end of his talk, Jan-Erik will also say a few words about how Open AR Cloud is bringing together people from all over the world to build an open and interoperable spatial computing ecosystem for the benefit of all. By bringing together the best minds we have a fighting chance to avoid the pitfalls and usher in a great new era!

PRO-VAS: utilizing AR and VSLAM for mobile apps development in visualizing ob...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
The development of mobile apps with augmented reality (AR) would enhance the capability in visualizing the scene or environment. Any apps supported by computer aided design versions with 3D models makes the design more realistic, such as in the form of websites or mobile apps. However, the current features for online platforms for shopping are quite limited and lack 3D visualization features. This paper presents the development of a mobile application, pro-visualizer app called PRO-VAS, that utilizes AR for scanning and visualizing the environment. PRO-VAS acts as a product visualizer that applies visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) for localization of the product in AR based systems.
The main components of PRO-VAS are ARCore from Google for interactive purposes, and the depth mapping from red green blue depth (RGB-D) phone camera with point plane generator and markerless tracking method. The last component of the app is the set of objects from the unity store, which can be chosen in PRO-VAS for the scanned scene area. The app was tested in various environments involving different objects and has shown competitive results. In the future, more features and products can be added to the apps.

The latest generation of virtual and mixed reality hardware has rekindled interest in VRGIS (Virtual Reality GIS) and ARGIS (Augmented Reality GIS) applications in health, and opened up new and exciting opportunities and possibilities for using these technologies in the personal and public health arenas (Kamel Boulos et al., 2017). This presentation will offer a snapshot of some of the most remarkable VRGIS and ARGIS solutions that rely on big data, including real-time data, to deliver the vision of smart healthy cities (Kamel Boulos et al., 2015).

Outdoor geolocation using GPS is fully part of our life as smartphone users. But
once we walk into a building, the experience stop quite abruptly… Beacons are a
good answer to this frustration and a great way of providing localized information to
users.
Back in August 2014, a London-based digital studio, ustwo, started working with the
Royal London Society for Blind People (RLSB) to build a system to help visually
impaired people navigating into the London subway*. The project was a
combination of beacons and voice commands to help people find their way.
This initiative has led to a community of several companies - backed
by Google - Wayfindr**, joining to create an open standard for indoor
navigation. This standard would provide a consistent system across
applications using it (and therefore improve the experience for
visually impaired people) and could also be extended to other
categories of users, such as tourists.

Virtual Reality is getting more and more real every day, and this is especially true with
immersive video.
The processing capacities and the algorithms to build immersive 360° video are mature,
but the produced content and is not quite yet. There are some nice video and 3D
animations that can be find on the Internet and platforms like YouTube, but the content
people wants to look at is still quite poor.
However, more and more reported initiatives are about added-value content, especially in
sport. Whether it’s a basketball game or a boxing game*, the 360° video enhance the
content and provide some highly valuable insight about the atmosphere in tribunes,
public’s emotions, etc.
The right strategy about virtual reality is yet to be defined (and will probably highly
depends on the content) but it surely involves giving users some new perspectives on
content they already like.

It’s not a secret that a successful online business model implies a good mobile
application to be complete. Facebook, Voyages SNCF, Showroom privés are a very few
examples among the numerous ones that confirm a (good) mobile application is key in
the current digital era.
But it’s not as obvious how companies should actually make such applications.
Technologies are still young and good designers and developers are quite rare.
Gigster is building a solution they expect to help enterprise get their
mobile application: by computing data provided by users online, the
artificial intelligence engine behind Gigster designs the development plan
and a price quote. If user agrees them, remote developers from Gigster
follows that plan and build the application based on pre-existing code
blocks. The applications are delivered in a few weeks. Quite impressive…
Gigster-like companies are bringing the Uber-approach to software development, making
it on-demand, simple, “affordable” and fast!
