Backup lift station pumps are permanently installed, independently powered pumps that can handle flows if problems arise with electric pumps. They are needed as backup in case a lift station loses power, equipment malfunctions, or flows exceed capacity. While generators provide backup power, backup pumps provide complete backup pumping and do not rely on other lift station equipment. Case studies show backup pumps successfully kept sewage flowing during hurricanes when generators failed. Installations include pumps used in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and pumps installed at various municipalities across the US.
