The most relevant policy tools that can help contribute accessing these savings potentials are the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), Ecodesign Directive (ED) and Energy Labelling Regulation (ELR).
Some examples of existing policy will be given and reference will be made to the recently completed Smart Readiness Indicator study and the ongoing Ecodesign BACS preparatory study.

Adoption of the Material Flow Cost Accounting approach to integrate physical ...Filippo Tresca
Nowadays one of the main issue concerning organization’s activities is their significant impact on natural environment in terms of resource depletion, waste and wastewater generation, air emissions. These environmental burdens are not accounted clearly (or are not accounted at all) in the financial statements of the organizations, because a traditional accounting system does not reveal environmental costs that are then inappropriately hidden in overhead accounts. This leads to inaccurate decision-making based on inaccurate environmental or waste cost information. The success of organizations depends on the quality of their decision-making process through the availability of an integrated data management system that combines separate data management systems of its various divisions.
A pilot project based on a Italian small enterprise which is operating in the plastic sector, leader in rubbish bags production, have been carried out. The main aim has been to test the Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) methodology in order to verify and assess the efficiency of the production process. The pilot project began in early 2011 and is intended to have a continuous application over the years. The final aim is to create a new internal database by integrating both economic and physical data, useful for waste decision-making and the optimization of the production process.
In the case study, authors have faced several organizational and accounting difficulties in applying the MFCA methodology. Generally, the SMEs have traditional accounting thinking, which accounts only monetary information and a lack of a clear flow chart of the production process in physical unit and/or a lack of independent cost centres emerge. Basing on company financial sheets and on the existing literature, assumptions and estimates have been done.
The goal has been to underline the economic value of the physical amounts associated with manufacturing process in order to show the economic value of material losses. In the current economic slowdown, this could allow to reduce these losses and, especially for a small enterprise, to avoid considerable costs, reorganizing and optimizing better the management of the material flow process. The findings highlight that the company has to improve and optimize its manufacturing process primarily for decreasing its material and energy costs. Improving the efficiency of raw material could reduce the related costs and wastes. Results also confirm the powerfulness of the MFCA method in identifying physical and monetary hidden flows for environmentally and economically conscious decision-making.

When applying for grants, funders often require sustaining plans beyond the project’s funding period. Systemic theory provides a framework for sustainability through analysis of the systems that influence the interventions’ effectiveness proposed by the grant. This presentation reviews a specific grant, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), that uses a systemic theory framework to inform implementation. The VISTA grant funds collaboration between a university and an elementary school focused on raising academic achievement with children living in poverty.
Technology choices should be made on the basis of sustainability. This presentation describes a framework for sustainability assessment of technologies. The framework was developed for UNEP's International Environmental Technology Center and has been widely applied and tested.

This report presents the step by step strategic analysis and the strategic position of Marks & Spencer, one of the leading retailers of UK and industry leader in women wear and lingerie segments. The report starts by presenting a brief background about the company and its current business position. Further, an external environment analysis is conducted using PESTLE analysis in order to understand the macroeconomic and environmental factors impacting the organization. After this step a brief financial review is conducted to assess the financial position of the company in terms of revenue growth and basic ratios. A competitive strategy review using Porter?s Generic Strategy Framework and the Resource based is conducted further. Moreover, in order to understand the strategic direction, the strategy of Marks & Spencer has been evaluated using Ansoff?s Matrix. After understanding the strategic direction, an overview of the methods of development used by Marks & Spencer is provided and the future expected challenges are discussed as well. The paper concludes by presenting the final strategic position of Marks & Spencer using the SPACE analysis and providing recommendations for future growth.

The presentation aims to explain how environmental performance requirements to works (buildings), that most likely will result into new additional product information, can be linked to building rating tools and to Environmental Product Declarations.
The interpretation of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR , 305/2011) is not that easy to understand to everyone, but the Regulation contains all the procedural elements that provide maximum freedom to Member States to set their own performance requirements to works (buildings) that might however require new and different declarations on a construction product's environmental performance when giving national interpretations to the Basic Requirement nr. 7 : "the sustainable use of natural resources". However the assignment of the appropriate European Standards, designed to assure a uniform and harmonised measurement and declaration of performances, are the ready to use "key".
The presentation shows how to use regulations, building rating tools, standards for quantifying building performances and standards for measuring product performances that provide the necessary input to the quantification of the (environmental) building performance.
