Qualcomm is elevating its role as a market leader by bringing breakthrough concepts to LTE’s evolution. We believe that the next significant performance leap will come from heterogeneous networks, or HetNets, which bring the network closer to the user through low-power nodes such as pico and femto-cells. LTE Advanced uses adaptive interference management techniques to further improve the capacity and coverage of these HetNets. Lte default and dedicated bearer / VoLTE
LTE uses EPS bearers to carry user data traffic. There are two types of EPS bearers - default bearers and dedicated bearers. Default bearers are created for each PDN connection and provide basic "best effort" internet access. Dedicated bearers provide additional tunnels for specific traffic like VoLTE and can have guaranteed bitrates. Dedicated bearers are linked to a default bearer and inherit properties like the PDN address from the default bearer. GTP is the protocol used to encapsulate and carry bearer traffic through the LTE core network.

VoLTE – A Game Changer for Policy: Policy Control & Data Pricing Conference
Now that LTE networks have been rolled out by most of the service providers in the world, the next objective for operators is the migration of the voice service to the LTE network. This migration is known as Voice over LTE or VoLTE.
VoLTE brings the two sides of the same coin. On the one hand, VoLTE is bringing multiple benefits for service providers (spectrum efficiency, high quality voice, OPEX & CAPEX reduction, etc) but on the other hand, VoLTE service is also bringing some challenges. Those challenges have an special impact on the Policy Management solutions currently deployed for Data Services as this node becomes a critical node in the network for VoLTE.
Policy Management plays a significant role in VoLTE and becomes a mandatory node in the network. This node is responsible for establishing and releasing, on behalf of the IMS domain, the bearer required to accommodate voice traffic.
Additionally, VoLTE is defining some stringent requirements for Policy Management solutions.
