2 nd April First day of the new academic session at
Mt. Orange Public School VLE walkthrough for schools VLE: Learning Management System Mt Orange is not a real school.
Today morning, there is a spring in the step of… Mr Ian Prince, the principal & Mr Runnit, the School Administrator
A little apprehension in the eyes of… Mr Desi Mull The Maths Teacher Mrs WithDraw The English teacher
…and a breathless anticipation in Master Ayall Toppit, the class topper for class 11 th Ms C.S. Shie, his classmate
And all this because Mt Orange has gone ahead to bring the Modern eLearning service to their students and teachers, in co-ordination with TSM Learning Solutions Pvt Ltd.
After the initial commotion dies down Teachers, administrators and students start the academic session They all were trained in VLE in the session break and now the whole school is raring to go the eLearning way
Mr Runnit, the School Administrator … has already fed the whole year’s schedule in VLE calendar . Now the events of the next full year are available in everyone’s individual calendar They also get to see these school wide events in their own lists of upcoming events and can plan for Exams Functions Sports events…
Mr Runnit, the School Administrator He has also updated the News Forum to which, all students and teachers are anyway subscribed. All school wide announcements are done on this forum & automatically emailed to everyone too, so that no one misses out on them.
Meanwhile, Mr Prince, the principal … had formed cohorts in VLE, which are the same as groups/ clubs/ societies/ working committees etc Now all his critical staff are just a post/ message away
The day in class 11 th starts with He had uploaded the curricula and lesson plans for the whole year in his course during the term break. He will re-use them every year now. Mr Desi Mull,The Maths Teacher’s class In addition, he also created the discussion topics, assignment and the weekly test’s skeleton also. Once he gets this done for all 52 weeks of the year, he will re-use them every year, with the next batch of students.
The day in class 11 th starts with Mr Desi Mull,The Maths Teacher’s class In addition, he also created the discussion topics, assignment and the weekly test’s skeleton also. Once he gets this done for all 52 weeks of the year, he will re-use them every year , with the next batch of students.
Initial difficulty Inspite of being computer savvy, Desi Mull did not have time to create interesting lessons for his students initially. So he just uploaded whatever he had on his computer for the present . Over the first year, he will use simple tools to create interactive learning material and scorm packages to increase his student engagement. He will be helped by TSM till he takes on his own.
The students are excited… Ayall Toppit has already explored the material which Desi Mull had uploaded. He also tried to take a peek at the weekly test. But Desi Mull was a smart teacher. All the material and questions that he did not want Toppit to see, he had HIDDEN them by closing the eye in his editing toolbar. Toppit had no idea they existed. He only saw what his teacher wanted him to see.
The students are excited… C.S. Shie, on the other hand, would not even ask questions in class. In fact, Desi Mull never even remembered her name. Now Desi Mull asked her to upload her foto in the profile and asked her to use journal entries to ask one-on-one questions from him , about the doubtful topics. He will also create a Personalised Learning Plan for her and monitor her progress thru a Mentor .
She was very apprehensive initially. Her computing skills were limited and she felt that language could hardly be taught using computers. She was given extra coaching to use VLE. Then she was also shown the modules where she could create subjective assignments for students to create offline assignments and upload. Even subjective tests could be created and graded . She also saw that she could detect copy-pasted material using plagiarism -check feature from VLE. Mrs WithDraw, the English teacher
Mrs WithDraw, the English teacher was delighted with… … peer-graded workshops where students helped each other create essays, assignments and even grade them. … Q&A discussions , where each student submits an answer to discussion and then gets to see other students’ submissions
Both the teachers were happy to see … that they could create a re-usable question bank from which VLE would pick up questions to create random question papers for practice and shuffled tests for real exams . All grading will be automated and they could see the whole classes grades in a jiffy from the grade book. Desi Mull was amazed to know that VLE can create mathematical questions where numbers can be changed by the system automatically to create unique questions.
They were also relieved That Prince had chosen VLE because it supports IMS and SCORM packages. It meant that in future, if the content had to be shifted to another system, it will work exactly the same way; no re-work for them. It also allowed inserting multimedia lessons using videos and audio . They were also happy that they had the option to backup their courses and also re-use their courses several times over to save repetitive effort.
By the end of this week The students won’t forget assignments at home as they will submit it online Teachers will spend their weekend with their own children while VLE grades their test papers and takes care of the next week’s lesson plan The administrators sleep well at night as the school’s running smoothly and on auto-pilot Parents are tracking their children’s progress and are never caught unawares .
