Definition :
 A nutrient that the body needs in small amounts to function and
stay healthy. Sources of vitamins are plant and animal food
products and dietary supplements. Some vitamins are made in
the human body from food products.
Classification Of Vitamin :
 Vitamins are grouped into two categories:
1. Fat-soluble vitamins
2. Water-soluble vitamins
Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body's liver, fatty tissue,
and muscles. The four fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E,
and K. These vitamins are absorbed more easily by the body in
the presence of dietary fat. Water-soluble vitamins are not stored
in the body.
Function of Vitamin:
 Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for proper
physiological functioning and maintaining overall health. Each
vitamin has a unique function in the body, and a deficiency of any
one of them can cause various health problems.
Here is a brief overview of the functions of some
essential vitamins:
1.Vitamin A: Essential for vision, immune system function, and skin health.
2.Vitamin B complex (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12): Essential for
energy metabolism, nervous system function, red blood cell production, and
DNA synthesis.
3.Vitamin C: Essential for collagen synthesis, wound healing, immune system
function, and antioxidant protection.
4.Vitamin D: Essential for bone health, immune system function, and regulation
of calcium and phosphorus metabolism.
5.Vitamin E: Essential for antioxidant protection, immune system function, and
skin health.
6.Vitamin K: Essential for blood clotting and bone health.

Because of the various roles that vitamin A plays in the body,
deficiency can have several health effects. These include:
 increased risk of infections
 night blindness and irreversible blindness (xeropthalmia)

 Vitamin B1 deficiency: Beriberi (a nerve and heart disorder), muscle
weakness, and memory loss.
 Vitamin B2 deficiency: Skin disorders, mouth sores, and anemia.
 Vitamin B3 deficiency: Pellagra (a skin and nerve disorder), diarrhea, and
dementia.
 Vitamin B6 deficiency: Anemia, skin disorders, and nerve damage.
 Vitamin B9 (folic acid) deficiency: Anemia, birth defects, and increased
risk of cancer.
 Vitamin B12 deficiency: Pernicious anemia, nerve damage, and dementia.
