If you have read a newspaper or magazine lately, you’ll know that vitamin D is connected to all sorts of bodily functions and health conditions, so that’s why Health Canada also lets us say it’s “a factor in the maintenance of good health.”
The sun’s rays makes a vitamin D precursor in our skin, so you may need more vitamin D in the fall and winter, when you’re less likely to get sun exposure.
It’s also a fact that people of colour, especially those of African and east Asian background, absorb less UVB radiation from the sun’s rays and make less vitamin D than persons of lighter skin colour. Darker skin contains a natural sunblock that makes it harder for the skin to make vitamin D.
Of course, if you work indoors during the day, you won’t get any sun exposure, so you would need extra vitamin D. And as you age, your skin loses its ability to make vitamin D from sunshine, so the older you get, the more vitamin D you’ll need.
The farther north or south of the equator you live, the less effective the UVB rays of the sun will be in producing vitamin D in the skin. Persons living above 35º latitude, which includes all of Canada, don’t receive sufficient sunlight during the winter months to produce adequate levels of vitamin D.
If you’re an Inuit living in our northernmost regions, you’re probably getting all your vitamin D from fatty fish, but you’re an exception!
