Heteronormativity refers to the social norm that heterosexuality and relationships between men and women are normal. Queer theory challenges this norm by examining situations, relationships, and interactions from the perspective of queer experiences, including those that are gay, lesbian, bisexual, polyamorous, or transgender. Queer theory acts as a lens to question biases in existing theories and research by considering topics previously seen as taboo from a queer viewpoint. It aims to expose limitations of only considering heterosexual norms.
