This document contains a prayer asking God for generous and loving hearts to see God's reign, a passage from Philippians discussing Paul's status before and after knowing Christ, and commentary on the passage. The commentary notes that: (1) if we want to follow Jesus, we must accept that life leads to death and death to life; (2) our ultimate hope is resurrected bodies living with Jesus, not disembodied absorption; and (3) true maturity means knowing we haven't achieved our goal and must continue pressing on.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
Evangelization in the footsteps of Saint Vincent de Paul

1. A Prayer for the People of God
Holy God,
you love justice and hate oppression;
you call us to righteousness and not to exploitation.
Give us generous and loving hearts,
and eyes to see the splendor of your reign,
that we may live in truth and honor,
and praise you for the transformation of our lives,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
4. 1. Paul is talking about “status”
2. Paul is talking about personal knowing
3. Paul is talking about conformity of life
“Better to have the Messiah,
and to follow him through
the cross to the resurrection,
than to have anything and
anyone else in the world.”
(N.T.Wright)
THOUGHTS on TODAY’S PASSAGE
5. If anyone else thinks they have
reason to trust in the flesh, I’ve got more.
Circumcised? On the eighth day.
Race? Israelite. Tribe? Benjamin.
Descent? Hebrew through and through.
Torah-observance? A Pharisee.
Zealous? I persecuted the church!
Official status under the law?
Blameless.
PHILIPPIANS 3:4b-6 (KNT)
6. Does that sound as though my account
was well in credit? Well, maybe; but
whatever I had written in on the profit side,
I calculated it instead as a loss—because
of the Messiah. Yes, I know that’s weird,
but there’s more: I calculate everything
as a loss, because knowing King Jesus
as my Lord is worth far more than
everything else put together!
PHILIPPIANS 3:7-8a (KNT)
7. In fact, because of the Messiah I’ve
suffered the loss of everything, and I now
calculate
it as trash, so that my profit may be the
Messiah, and that I may be discovered
in him, not having my own covenant status
defined by Torah, but the status which
comes through the Messiah’s faithfulness:
the covenant status from God
which is given to faith.
PHILIPPIANS 3:8b-9 (KNT)
8. This means knowing him, knowing the
power of his resurrection, and knowing the
partnership of his sufferings. It means
sharing the form and pattern of his death,
so that somehow I may arrive at the final
resurrection from the dead. I’m not
implying that I’ve already received
“resurrection,” or that
I’ve already become complete and mature!
No: I’m hurrying on, eager to overtake it,
PHILIPPIANS 3:10-12 (KNT)
9. My dear family, I don’t reckon
that I have yet overtaken it.
But this is my one aim:
to forget everything that’s behind,
and to strain every nerve
to go after what’s ahead.
PHILIPPIANS 3:13 (KNT)
10. 1. If we want to follow the pattern of Jesus,
we must come to terms with this:
life leads to death, and death to life…

LIFE death LIFE
11. 1. If we want to follow the pattern of Jesus,
we must come to terms with this:
life leads to death, and death to life…
2. What we ultimately hope for is
not a disembodied absorption into
”the universe,” but resurrected bodies
living in the bodily presence of Jesus
SOME FINAL TAKEAWAYS
12. True maturity, Paul insists, actually
means knowing that you haven’t arrived,
and that you must still keep pressing
on forwards towards the goal, (but)
living in “heaven” isn’t the goal we
are aiming at; rather, it’s living in God’s
new world with our resurrected bodies…
it means living in the present in
the light of the future.

3. “Jesus is Lord, everything else is b.s.”

14. Closing Prayer
God, our beloved,
you set before us the goal
of new life in Christ.
May we live in the power
of his resurrection
and bring forth the fruit
of your gentle and loving rule.
Amen.
