Rewind, pt. 2: Mercy AND Justice - This Is Who We Are
1. OPENING PRAYER
Holy and righteous God,
you raised Christ from the dead
and glorified him at your right hand.
Let the words of scripture,
fulfilled in Jesus your Son,
burn within our hearts and
open our minds to recognize him
in the breaking of bread. Amen.
4. He has told you, O mortal,
what is good; and what does
the Lord require of you but
to do justice, love mercy,
and walk humbly with your God? MICAH
6:8
(NRSV)
5. “On the one hand we are called to play
the good Samaritan on life's roadside; but
that will be only an initial act.
One day we must come to see that
the whole Jericho Road must be
transformed so that men and women will
not be constantly beaten and robbed as
they make their journey
on life's highway. True compassion
is more than flinging a coin
to a beggar; it is not haphazard
and superficial.”
6. “It comes to see that an edifice
which produces beggars needs
restructuring… I admire the good
Samaritan, but I don't want to be one.
I don't want to spend my life picking up
people by the side of the road after they
have been beaten up and robbed.
I want to change the Jericho Road,
so that everybody has an opportunity for
a job, education, security,
and health.”
11. Asking Douglas County elected officials
to champion continued efforts
by Heartland Workforce Development
to implement the proven staffing solution
from Dwyer Workforce Development
12. Asking Douglas County elected officials to (1) vote
to approve the A Place for Everyone strategic plan,
(2) to include – and vote for – the necessary funding
for that plan, and (3) ensure continued accountability
for reaching “functional zero” by the 2028 deadline
13. Right now Douglas County needs more than 6,000
additional trained elder care workers to meet
the care needs of our current elder population,
numbers which continue to increase…
14. Right now Douglas County has hundreds
of community members without stable,
permanent housing, and no officially finalized plan
– or officially approved budget –
to implement the A Place For Everyone strategy…
15. “It is not enough to understand,
or to see clearly. The future
will be shaped in the arena
of human activity, by those
willing to commit their minds
and their bodies to the task.”
17. Holy God,
you have called us to follow in the way
of your risen Son, and to care for those who are
our companions, not only with words of comfort,
but with acts of love. Seeking to be true friends of all,
may we offer our prayers, and our lives,
on behalf of the church and the world.
In the name of Jesus we pray:
Amen.
