 Regeneration =
 Being spiritually born again
 Being invested with new and higher spiritual
nature
 Having more vigorous life breathed into you
(Oxford).
Regeneration (the new birth/being born again) as
found in the Bible; speaks of the process of
passing out of death into life.
REGENERATION
NEW BIRTH
 To appreciate the necessity of being “born again” we need to realise
man’s condition before regeneration. Before the “new birth” the
spirit of man is far away from God and is considered dead, for death
is DISSOCIATION FROM LIFE AND FROM GOD, who is the foundation
of life.
1. Spiritual death is hence separation from God. (Separated because of
sin. Rm. 5:10, 12, 15, 18)
2. Man’s spirit is dead and therefore unable to commune with Him.
(Being dead in trespasses and sins. Eph. 2:1)
3. Living a life independent of God. (We have turned everyone TO HIS
OWN WAY Isa. 53:6)
The Bible reveals that any person living in this position is heading for a
LOST ETERNITY – ETERNAL DAMMATION. However the good news of
the Gospel is “that God is not willing that any should perish” and
therefore God in His love provided a way whereby we could be SAVED.
Cleansing of the human spirit (Eze. 36:25)
 In John 3:3 Jesus says to Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again he
cannot see the kingdom of God”.
(‘Born again’ in the Greek is “to be born from above”)
When Jesus says this to Nicodemus, Nicodemus doesn’t understand and
questions Him further. In reply Jesus says, “Except a man is born again of
water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God”. In the
original Greek it reads “born of the water and of spirit”.....
The language here is pictorial:
 WATER represents CLEANSING
SPIRIT represents THE KIND OF CLEANSING
 i.e. EXCEPT A MAN BE BORN OF SPIRITUAL CLEANSING HE CANNOT SEE THE
KINGDOM OF GOD.
This takes place by the operation of the Holy Spirit through the word of
God. Titus 3:5.
 RECEIVING OF DIVINE LIFE – THE SPIRIT OF GOD
At the time of the new birth God puts His Holy Spirit
within us and we then become partakers of His Divine
Life and Nature.
 Eze. 36:26, 27
 Jn. 10:10
“A new heart also will I give you, AND A NEW
SPIRIT WILL I PUT WITHIN YOU: and I will take
away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will
give
you an heart of flesh. And I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT
WITHIN YOU and cause you to walk in my
statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and
do them.”
“I am come that they might have life, and
that they might have it more
abundantly.”
Life = Gk. “Zoe” = divine life; self-
existent life of God.
 Through repentance – (being sorry enough to quit)
Repentance is not just having sorrow for sin, but rather a change of mind,
leading to a change of action, conduct & direction. Or, another way of
putting it is “true sorrow for sin with a sincere determination to forsake it” as
expressed in Proverbs 28:13.
 Repentance is God’s command to all everywhere. 2 Pet. 3:9
“God is not willing that any should perish BUT THAT ALL SHOULD COME TO
REPENTANCE”.
(Jesus emphasized it – Lk 24:47; Matt. 9:13; Mk. 2:17; Mk. 6:12; Matt. 12:41)
THERE CAN BE NO SALVATION WITHOUT TRUE REPENTANCE.
“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso
confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.”
 Through Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
 Rm. 10:9- That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the
Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath
raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
 Acts 16:31- Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou
shalt be saved.
 Acts 4:12- Neither is there salvation in any other: for there
is none other name under heaven give among men,
whereby we must be saved.
From these scriptures we not only see the importance of
having faith, but also that our faith is to be in the person
of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Salvation is only AVAILABLE for us in Him, for He made it
possible for us to be reunited to God by paying the penalty
for our sins. (Read last week’s notes – “What Jesus legally
accomplished for us”).
 Through Inviting Christ into our lives
 Rev. 3:20- Behold I stand at the door and
knock; IF ANY MAN hear my voice, and OPEN
THE DOOR, I WILL COME IN TO HIM, and will
sup (fellowship) with him, and he with Me.
 Through Making a confession of your personal faith in
Christ
 Rm. 10:9- That if thou shalt CONFESS with thy mouth the
Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath
raised Him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
 Rm. 10:10- For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and WITH THE MOUTH CONFESSION IS
MADE UNTO SALVATION.
Amplified Bible “...and with the mouth he confesses
declares (openly) and speaks out freely his faith – and
confirms (his) salvation”.
God is looking for more than just faith. He wants action too.
It is the action of our confession that establishes, confirms
and completes the experiences of ‘salvation’ within us.
 Justified ---- Before, I was a condemned sinner, but now after the new birth I can stand
before God “just as if I had never sinned”. Rm. 5:1. (Because of Jesus, I’ve
been acquitted of the change and set free).
 Regenerated ---- I have received His divine life – “Old things have passed away and all
things have become new” and now I am a new creature in Christ. (Because
of His life within me, there is a change in my character and conduct).
 Assurance ---- Having experienced God’s forgiveness and cleansing, I can now come into
God’s presence. BODLY (with total assurance) without any sense of
condemnation. (Heb. 4:16; Rm. 8:1)
 Adopted ---- I have now become a member of God’s family – having been translated
from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God. In Jn.1:12 we are
said to be “sons of God”. We are also joint-heirs with Christ. Gal. 4:7
 Sanctified ---- I am now separated – set apart for the Lord’s use.
1 Cor. 6:19, 20.... “And ye are not your own... for ye are bought
with a price...”
1 Cor. 7:22,23.... “Likewise also he that is called, being free, is
Christ’s servant.... Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the
servants of men.”
 The best way to illustrate this is to draw a
parallel to a natural birth. In the natural birth,
the baby has three things:
 to be lived.
 to be developed.
 (of mind, body, and spirit) to be used.
A LIFE
A NATURE
POWERS
 THE GIFT OF A NEW LIFE TO BE LIVED FOR GOD
Life brings two things – relationships and responsibilities.
Through the “new birth” I am now related to God, and I have a
RESPONSIBITIY to God as my heavenly Father.
 A NEW NATURE TO BE DEVELOPED FOR GOD
God’s purpose for us is that we might be ‘conformed to the
image of His Son’. Rm 8:29.
Also, it is His purpose that those about us might understand the
nature of God through what they see of Him demonstrated IN
OUR LLIVES.
 NEW POTENTIALTIES TO BE DEVELOPED AND USED FOR GOD
Each one of us has a particular function (ministry) in the body of
Christ. 1 Cor. 12:12-31.
God equips us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit to aid us in our
particular ministry. 1 Cor. 12.

God bless you all
