Flyover: Part 3 - St. Patrick's Day & The Gospel of Luke
1. OPENING PRAYER
God of suffering and glory,
in Jesus Christ you reveal
the way of life as you lead us,
and as we follow you.
Inscribe your law in our hearts,
that in life we may not stray from you,
but may be your people.
Amen.

5. WHEN STUDYING THE BIBLE
CONTEXT drives us to ask:
• WHO wrote it? Luke; Cyrene/North Afr.?
• WHO to? Theophilus; likely his patron
• WHAT was happening?
• HOW did their culture/history
impact the author/audience?
• WHEN was it written? @ 62 CE
• HOW does the intended purpose
impact our reading?
GOSPEL OF
LUKE/ACTS
6. Many have undertaken to draw up
an account of the things that have been
fulfilled among us, just as they were
handed down to us by those who from the
first were eyewitnesses and servants of the
word. With this in mind, since
I myself have carefully investigated
everything from the beginning, I too
decided to write an orderly account
for you, most excellent Theophilus,
so that you may know the certainty
of the things you have been taught.
LUKE
1:1-4
7. In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote
about all that Jesus began to do and
to teach until the day he was taken
up to heaven, after giving instructions
through the Holy Spirit to the apostles
he had chosen. After his suffering,
he presented himself to them and gave
many convincing proofs that he was alive.
He appeared to them over a period
of forty days and spoke about
the kingdom of God.

21. People will come from east and west and
north and south, and will take
their places at the feast in the kingdom
of God. Indeed there are those who
are last who will be first, and first
who will be last. LUKE

23. People of Athens! I see that
in every way you are very religious.
For as I walked around and looked
carefully at your objects of worship,
I even found an altar with this
inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.
So you are ignorant of the very
thing you worship—and this is
what I am going to proclaim to you.

HIGHLIGHTS
25. “Our drug of choice right now
is knowing who we’re better than.”
NADIA
BOLZ-WEBER
26. “The idea (of redemptive violence)
baked into some branches
of Christianity, that…God
is responsible for the violence
towards people we don’t like
(in the form of floods,
hurricanes, wars, etc.,
in order) to punish
them…is not of God.”
27. “They are projections of natural
and human violence on to God.
These are our ideas of what we
think a God should be, what we
want a God to be. We want
a God who shows the
bad people who is right.
And, of course, we want
to be the good people
(and see ourselves
as such.)”
29. May the Strength of God pilot us.
May the Power of God preserve us.
May the Wisdom of God instruct us.
May the Hand of God protect us.
May the Way of God direct us.
May the Shield of God defend us.
May the Host of God guard us
Against the snares of the evil ones,
Against temptations of the world.
CLOSING PRAYER
30. May Christ be with us!
May Christ be before us!
May Christ be in us,
Christ be over all!
May your salvation, Lord,
Surround us, and all you have made,
This day, O Lord,
and evermore.
Amen.
