Childhood Obesity
CHANGINGS TODAY TO MAKE A BETTER TOMORROW
What is Childhood Obesity?
 The World Health Organization (WHO) consider childhood obesity as one
of the most serious health challenges.
 Childhood obesity leads to diabetes, type 2 liver diseases and
cardiovascular disease.
 Obesity rates have been increasing since 1980. The percentage for children
ages 6 to 11 has doubled at 18%.
 For children from 12 to 19 it has quadrupled. This is at 21%.
 (Vittrup & McClure 2018)
How will we implement Change
 There are three proposed change stages
 Analysis of current procedure and education
 Based on analysis change objectives and plans
 Support the changes, add support documentation and update procedures.
Analysis
 Strengths
 We have great system of teachers and curriculm
 We have room for growth
 We have the budget to fund for at least one year
Weaknesses
 Attracting Students to the new programs and getting buy in
 Changing current understanding of health goals and healthily living.
 Barriers to healthy lifestyle due to surrounding environment (availability of
unhealthy foods and marketing towards them).
 No support system for student and teachers for health problems
Opportunity
 This is the best time to make changes in a student life as they will be long
term health benefits
 Adding additional classes and driving goals of a health school may attract
student and teachers
 Healthier students do better in testing and classes
Theat
 Changing community focus to add healthy choices to community meals
 We are competing with Mass media and the junk food empire. (Why have
water when I can get a large coke with free refils.)
 Generally it’s the students loss if don’t provide the opportunity for change.
Proposed Changes
 Provide Healthy alternatives for on premise foods
 Healthy alternative snacks from vending machines and School cafeteria
 Supplement education classes for students and teachers on healthy living
and benefits
 Provide training for all staff at beginning of semester.
 Additional funding for changes in the school, also for production of
literature and mixed media.
 Meeting with Parents and Student at the beginning of the school year to
inform them of the new classes and options
Proposed Changes Continued
 Join Florida programs to add farm to table options. ( long term goal)
 Add surveys at the begging of the school year to measure weight and
growth ( After acceptance by the Parent/Guardian)
Evaluation
 Follow up on student with
 Surveys during the school year (qualitative surveys)
 Analysis in activities for the school year
 End of year surveys for students and parents to evaluate
program(qualitative)
Supplementary
 Appoint leaders for different class groups to track status and provide
feedback and answers for the team.
 Educate the teachers and counselors so students will have a point of
contact both in the class and private as they wish
 Appoint student leaders on a rotating shift so all students get to
participate.
 The above will provide a support basis for all and will help with the verall
program.
Reflection
 The plan is large in scope but once it is broken down into its different
components it becomes a lot easier. Planning on a change in a school is a
relatively hard depening on the scope of the plan and the target audience.
But if you have proper research and planning you stand a good chance of
succeeding as long as you support your plan from beginning to end.
 Public speaking is not my forte but it is the jo I have taken so I have to be
able to speak with my peers and students and be able to support this
change. I will also have to convince them of its importance. Which is why
knowing what you are planning and researching your plan is so
fundamental. I plan on being the instrument of change in the organization
and tryt o attend to every detail and person.

  • 1. Childhood Obesity CHANGINGS TODAY TO MAKE A BETTER TOMORROW
  • 2. What is Childhood Obesity?  The World Health Organization (WHO) consider childhood obesity as one of the most serious health challenges.  Childhood obesity leads to diabetes, type 2 liver diseases and cardiovascular disease.  Obesity rates have been increasing since 1980. The percentage for children ages 6 to 11 has doubled at 18%.  For children from 12 to 19 it has quadrupled. This is at 21%.  (Vittrup & McClure 2018)
  • 3. How will we implement Change  There are three proposed change stages  Analysis of current procedure and education  Based on analysis change objectives and plans  Support the changes, add support documentation and update procedures.
  • 4. Analysis  Strengths  We have great system of teachers and curriculm  We have room for growth  We have the budget to fund for at least one year
  • 5. Weaknesses  Attracting Students to the new programs and getting buy in  Changing current understanding of health goals and healthily living.  Barriers to healthy lifestyle due to surrounding environment (availability of unhealthy foods and marketing towards them).  No support system for student and teachers for health problems
  • 6. Opportunity  This is the best time to make changes in a student life as they will be long term health benefits  Adding additional classes and driving goals of a health school may attract student and teachers  Healthier students do better in testing and classes
  • 7. Theat  Changing community focus to add healthy choices to community meals  We are competing with Mass media and the junk food empire. (Why have water when I can get a large coke with free refils.)  Generally it’s the students loss if don’t provide the opportunity for change.
  • 8. Proposed Changes  Provide Healthy alternatives for on premise foods  Healthy alternative snacks from vending machines and School cafeteria  Supplement education classes for students and teachers on healthy living and benefits  Provide training for all staff at beginning of semester.  Additional funding for changes in the school, also for production of literature and mixed media.  Meeting with Parents and Student at the beginning of the school year to inform them of the new classes and options
  • 9. Proposed Changes Continued  Join Florida programs to add farm to table options. ( long term goal)  Add surveys at the begging of the school year to measure weight and growth ( After acceptance by the Parent/Guardian)
  • 10. Evaluation  Follow up on student with  Surveys during the school year (qualitative surveys)  Analysis in activities for the school year  End of year surveys for students and parents to evaluate program(qualitative)
  • 11. Supplementary  Appoint leaders for different class groups to track status and provide feedback and answers for the team.  Educate the teachers and counselors so students will have a point of contact both in the class and private as they wish  Appoint student leaders on a rotating shift so all students get to participate.  The above will provide a support basis for all and will help with the verall program.
  • 12. Reflection  The plan is large in scope but once it is broken down into its different components it becomes a lot easier. Planning on a change in a school is a relatively hard depening on the scope of the plan and the target audience. But if you have proper research and planning you stand a good chance of succeeding as long as you support your plan from beginning to end.  Public speaking is not my forte but it is the jo I have taken so I have to be able to speak with my peers and students and be able to support this change. I will also have to convince them of its importance. Which is why knowing what you are planning and researching your plan is so fundamental. I plan on being the instrument of change in the organization and tryt o attend to every detail and person.
