There are two main types of vegetarians - lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat but do consume animal products like eggs, milk, and cheese as the animals are not slaughtered. They generally do not have nutritional deficiencies except for possibly iron. Vegans do not consume any animal products and may be at risk of deficiencies in iron, calcium, vitamins B12 and D if their diet is not carefully planned. Both types of vegetarians must ensure they get sufficient protein, fats, vitamins and minerals from plant sources.
