Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Cotton Outlook 3-2022
PRICE OUTLOOK
The USDA released a preliminary set of estimates for the upcoming 2022/23 crop year at their
Annual Outlook Forum on February 24th.
Projections suggested slight increases in global production (+3.2% to 124.0 million bales) and
mill-use (+1.7% to 126.5 million bales) and forecast a slight reduction in world ending stocks (-
3.2% to 64.6 million bales).
The same day that the USDA released their preliminary outlook, Russia invaded Ukraine, and
the outbreak of war instantly rendered elements of those early forecasts obsolete. One major
effect of the conflict has been volatility in commodity prices. Anticipated disruptions in supply
stemming from the invasion and the sanctions it caused sent prices higher.
Both Russia and Ukraine are top ten producers of wheat, corn, and soybeans. However, these
countries are much more important to the global wheat market (15% collective share for wheat,
less than a 5% collective share for corn or soybeans). Current wheat prices are +35% higher
than they were before the invasion. Corn prices increased by a smaller margin (+8%). Soybean
prices moved higher in January and February, but did not react strongly to the invasion.
Cotton prices were negatively affected by the outbreak of war, and there may be implications
for planting. While cotton prices remain high and attractive by historical standards, recent
increases in prices for other crops may have eroded cotton's favorable position. A result could
be that cotton acreage may not increase as much as was forecast just a few weeks ago.
Other major commodities that experienced significant volatility relate to energy. Natural gas is
a key export from Russia, and gas prices were already high before the conflict. Natural gas is
also an ingredient for (Nitrogen) fertilizer production. Fertilizer prices were high before the
conflict. With the conflict, those prices can be expected to remain high, and availability may be
limited. High fertilizer prices and reductions in availability will affect all crops and may lower
yields if supplies are rationed.
Oil is another energy-related commodity that has experienced significant volatility. Current oil
prices near $130/barrel (Brent) are almost double the average from December ($74/barrel).
Higher oil prices may eventually extend pressure on polyester prices, but a greater effect on the
cotton market could come from consumer demand. The use of oil and natural gas for heating,
electricity generation, and transportation is essential for the functioning of economies and
households around the world.
Substitute sources of energy are not immediately available in most cases. This means that cost
increases for energy will be passed on, and strains on budgets for energy-related necessities
may divert spending away from more discretionary items like clothing and home furnishings.
In addition, fear of the war's spread may cause consumers to pull back on overall spending and
increase savings.

VIETNAM COTTON AND SPINNING ASSOCIATION_______________________MAR 2022 – MONTHLY REPORT
Any global pullback in spending could lower cotton demand and economic growth. Before the
war, economies around the world were already set to face challenges from inflation, the
withdrawal of stimulus, and increases in interest rates.

Brazilian cotton prices see slight fluctuations this month
Fibre2fashion
Mar 21, 2022
The price competition between sellers and purchasers was fierce in the Brazilian spot market
in the first fortnight of March, resulting in slight fluctuations of cotton values. Between March 1
and 15, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for cotton ranged between BRL 6.89 and BRL 7.02/pound. Still,
sellers’ firm stance on prices prevailed and underpinned quotations.
Between February 25 and March 15, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for cotton rose by 1.45 per cent,
closing at BRL 6.9860/pound on March 15, according to the latest fortnightly report on
Brazilian cotton market released by the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics
(CEPEA).
“Aware of the recent oil valuations, sellers raised asking prices for cotton. However, purchasers
are concerned about the economic situation in Brazil, lowering bidding prices for the product.
Thus, only a few buyers were interested in closing deals in the spot market, and agents from
some processors reported high stocks of by-products, postponing deliveries of the cotton
already purchased. Also, some processors reduced activities.
“This scenario and the high increase of freight costs constrained new deals in the first half of
March. The agents who closed deals and needed to hire freight for delivery seemed very
concerned about costs,” the report said.
Meanwhile, Conab (Brazil’s National Company for Food Supply) has released a report which
estimates the country’s cotton area in 2021-22 season at 1.6 million hectares, 4.16 per cent
larger than that estimated in February and 16.8 per cent larger than the last season.
Productivity is forecast to increase by 2.5 per cent to 1,765 kilograms/hectare. Thus, the
Brazilian cotton output is expected to be 19.7 per cent higher than that in 2020-21, totalling
2.82 million tons in 2021-22 (+4.15 per cent compared to that previously estimated).
In Mato Grosso, the main cotton producing province in the country, Conab estimated the area
to be sown with cotton at 1.14 million hectares, 4.31 per cent larger than that estimated in
February 2022 and 13.8 per cent larger than that in 2020-21. Productivity is forecast
unchanged at 1.739 kg/hectare. Production estimates were revised up by 4.31 per cent in the
monthly comparison and by 22.6 per cent compared to that in the season before, to 1.982
million tons in 2021-22.
In Bahia, the second-largest cotton producing province, the cotton area is estimated to be 5.33
per cent larger than that forecast in February 2022 and 14.8 per cent larger than that last
season, at 306,100 hectares. Thus, the output was revised up by 5.15 per cent compared to that

previously reported and by 14.4 per cent compared to that last season, estimated at 579,600
tons. Productivity is forecast at 1,894 kg/hectare.
Impact of the Russia and Ukraine war on global textile and cotton industry.
Textileexcellence
Mar 08, 2022
The impact of the Russia and Ukraine war on global cotton textile industrial chain is gradually
expanding.
Among the major import origins of textile and apparel in Russia, the proportion from China
takes a high of 43.8%, followed by Italy 8.1%, Bangladesh 6.4%, Republic of Belarus 6.3%,
Turkey 6.1% and Vietnam 6.1%.
Viewed from the China and Russia relations and global trade change, the market shares of China
in Russian textile and apparel imports may increase further in long run, to fulfill the supply gap
caused by the sanctions from Europe and US. For China, the textile and apparel exports to Russia
take a very small proportion, easy to meet the new demand from Russia. However, restrained
by the large export shares of EU, Japan and US for China, if the war influences the relations
between EU, Japan, US and China, China’s textile and apparel exports may face obvious pressure.
Since Italy is a member of the EU and NATO, the relationship between Russia and the EU and
NATO has become tenser after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which will inevitably
affect their economic and trade relations.
In general, the economic and other sanctions caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war may lead to
a decrease in the export of textiles and clothing from several major exporting countries to
Russia, and this part of the decrease may be fulfilled by China. However, since Russia’s textile
23. Page | 22
VIETNAM COTTON AND SPINNING ASSOCIATION_______________________MAR 2022 – MONTHLY REPORT
and apparel import demand accounts for a relatively small proportion in the world, the Russian-
Ukrainian war may more affect global trade flows, while its impact on total demand may be
relatively limited.
Meanwhile, Russia is also a major exporter of fertilizers. In 2021, the export volume of urea is 7
million tons, accounting for 3.56% of global production.
Global cotton planting costs are likely to keep increasing with higher prices of fertilizers. The
planting areas in 2022/23 season still have large uncertainties.
In addition, the war has also led to a shortage of seafarers, and the global supply chain may face
the risk of disruption. The Seafarer Workforce Report, published in 2021 by BIMCO and ICS,
reports that 1.89 million seafarers are currently operating over 74,000 vessels in the global
merchant fleet. Of this total workforce, 198,123 (10.5%) of seafarers are Russian and Ukraine
accounts for 76,442 (4%) of seafarers. Combined they represent 14.5% of the global workforce.
26,000 seafarers may be lacked in the next four years. International sea freight may keep high
for long time.
Pakistan to adjust anti-dumping duties on polyester filament yarn from China
Fashionatingworld
Feb 21, 2022
At the request of the Pakistan Court of Appeal, Pakistan National Customs Commissioner plans
to reopen the anti-dumping investigation of polyester filament yarn and adjust the anti-
dumping duty on the products involved to 2.78-6.82 per cent for China and 3.16 per cent for
Malaysia. The measure is valid until August 25, 2022. The anti-dumping investigation initiated
by Pakistan against China's PFY found the adjusted anti-dumping duty rate has declined.
In recent years, Pakistan’s exports of PFY grew year on year due to rapidly growing demand for
textiles. Reduction of anti-dumping duty rate is undoubtedly a great boon. In 2021, China's PFY
exports to Pakistan reached a record high of 257kt, accounting for nearly 9 per cent of exports,
most of which need to be subject to anti-dumping duties.
With adjustment of anti-dumping duty rates at the beginning of the year, it means most PFY
exported to Pakistan before August 25, 2022 can enjoy the dividend of reduced anti-dumping
duties, which to a certain extent increases the export competitiveness of China-made PFY.
