Varicose veins are dilated, elongated superficial veins caused by venous hypertension. They most commonly occur in males in India and affect the left lower limb. The superficial veins of the lower limb contain incompetent valves, allowing backflow of blood which further distends the veins. Conservative management includes compression stockings and leg elevation. Sclerotherapy involves injecting chemicals into veins to cause fibrosis and closure. For severe varicose veins, high ligation and stripping surgically ligates and removes the affected veins. Post-procedure, patients are advised strict bed rest, walking, and wearing of compression stockings.
