The conference marked the first time chief academic officers from every public campus in the Commonwealth met to develop a shared approach to the college completion agenda, and was keynote speaker Jim Peyser's first major higher education convening since being appointed Secretary of Education.

As the fight for research grants intensifies and the pot of money decreases, librarians need to ensure that the topic of scholarly communication remains on the forefront, regardless of funding. Affording researchers avenues to widely share and publish their work to make it widely available should be a mission both in the library and at the highest levels of the institution. How can libraries make an impact? In this presentation two librarians, a consortia officer and vendor, will discuss how consortia have and continue to play a primary role in advocating for dissemination of information and scholarly communication. Additionally, they will discuss other tools that libraries/researchers can use as a method of collaboration, whether regional or international, and why it is essential for libraries to become part of the solution before they are left out in the cold. Please come prepared to discuss how your library is making an impact on this topic.

McKee is probably the only person you’ll meet with both an undergrad AND MLS in Library Science.

ABSTRACT: It has long been recognised that policies and mandates are key drivers of open access (OA) publishing and dissemination. While a great deal of attention has been placed on funder policies, researchers are also often covered by institutional policies or guidelines. This presentation will provide an overview of the state of open access policies at Australian universities. It will report on a research project that is analysing all existing OA policies, or policies that are related to open access (for example dissemination of research output policies) at Australian universities. In addition to reporting whether universities have policies explicitly related to open access, and what those policies require of researchers, the project also explores how universities define OA, and the extent to which their policies represent a form of OA advocacy. The presentation will include highlights from a comparison of university policies for their similarities and differences, a discussion of their key characteristics, and an assessment of the potential future role of such policies in the context of the national and international OA landscape.

In articulating the differences in research output between HSS and STEM, Kennison offers an approach to funding infrastructure in such diverse disciplines through the Open Access Network, which is designed to be supportive of both traditional short- and long-form output as well as emerging digital forms.

ABSTRACT: Understanding scholarly communication is becoming increasingly important within research institutions. In response, the number and range of scholarly communication-related roles within academic libraries, and other departments and divisions, have been growing steadily for nearly 20 years. Yet there are very few formal training opportunities for people moving into these roles. This has led to something of a crisis, with a recent paper in the US identifying that “scholarly communications librarians experience impostor phenomenon more frequently and intensely than academic librarians more broadly”.
This talk will describe an Australasian research project building on the US study looking at scholarly communication knowledge and skills. Our study focusses on people who support institutional repository management, publishing services, research practice, copyright services, open access policies and scholarly communication landscape, data management services, and assessment & impact metrics. The findings will help identify future training and workforce development needs.

The response to the SUNY Board of Trustees requesting information about the UB's new Shale Resources and Society Institute after the new institute release a report which found Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale drilling environmental problems were few and far between. Anti-drilling academe proceeded with an modern-day witch hunt to try and discredit the institute and the authors of the report. UB defends the institute and the report in this 162-page response.

Bullying—long tolerated as just a part of growing up—finally has been recognized as a substantial and preventable health problem. Bullying is associated with anxiety, depression, poor school performance, and future
delinquent behavior among its targets, and reports regularly surface of youth who have committed suicide at least in part because of intolerable bullying. Bullying can also have harmful effects on children who bully, on
bystanders, on school climates, and on society at large. Bullying can occur at all ages, from before elementary school to after high school. It can take the form of physical violence, verbal attacks, social isolation, spreading
rumors, or cyber bullying.
Increased concern about bullying has led 49 states and the District of Columbia to enact anti-bullying legislation since 1999. In addition, researchon the causes, consequences, and prevention of bullying has expanded greatly in recent decades. However, major gaps still exist in the understanding of bullying and of interventions that can prevent or mitigate the effectsof bullying.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
