INTRODUCTION


• It   was apparent that students love interacting on the internet.

•I wondered how I could channel this enthusiasm to support
  their work.

• Would     having a class Webpage help?
Who could help me?
                                           Donna got me started, she showed me how to create student
                                           pages on the wiki and, how to upload pictures and embed
                                           videos.
                                           Later, I taught this to my class.




Wendy showed me two important tools, taking screen
shots and managing the navigational tools on the wiki.
Again, I taught this to my class.
The end result!

Download research sites relevant to their topics, e.g.
History of Whangarei, Caring for Pets, etc.

Publishing students’ work.

   Children crave access to tools that let them network with their
   peers or anyone else they choose to interact with.

   Our children are the first generation to have mastered a
   multitude of tools essential to society before the older
   generation.

   It is second nature for them to multi-task.

   Specific colours attract and repel digital natives when they are

• more than 10 000 hours of video games
• sent and received 250 000 e-mails and text/instant
   messages

• spent 10 000 hours talking on phones
• watched more than 20 000 hours TV
• and viewed 500 000 commercials
So What?

Do you think this digital bombardment might
have an impact on the way they think? You bet!

Because, in comparison, they will have spent 9
000 hours attending school

And, even less than 5 000 hours READING
books - much of which is spent unengaged or
under- engaged. OH MY!

Using Wiki to Engage my Class

  • 1. What interest or enthusiasm would a class Wiki generate? Date
  • 2. INTRODUCTION • It was apparent that students love interacting on the internet. •I wondered how I could channel this enthusiasm to support their work. • Would having a class Webpage help?
  • 3. Who could help me? Donna got me started, she showed me how to create student pages on the wiki and, how to upload pictures and embed videos. Later, I taught this to my class. Wendy showed me two important tools, taking screen shots and managing the navigational tools on the wiki. Again, I taught this to my class.
  • 5. THE BENEFITS! Communication vehicle - shareware. Download research sites relevant to their topics, e.g. History of Whangarei, Caring for Pets, etc. Publishing students’ work. Current items that might assist particular students in the class.

  • 10. What I discovered. Children crave access to tools that let them network with their peers or anyone else they choose to interact with. Our children are the first generation to have mastered a multitude of tools essential to society before the older generation. It is second nature for them to multi-task.   • 11. Did you know...? • By the time digital kids are 21, they will have played ... • more than 10 000 hours of video games • sent and received 250 000 e-mails and text/instant messages • spent 10 000 hours talking on phones • watched more than 20 000 hours TV • and viewed 500 000 commercials
  • 12. So What? Do you think this digital bombardment might have an impact on the way they think? You bet! Because, in comparison, they will have spent 9 000 hours attending school And, even less than 5 000 hours READING books - much of which is spent unengaged or under- engaged. OH MY!
