USING DIGITAL
DEVICES
DIGITAL DEVICES
 A physical unit of equipment that contains a
computer or microcontroller.
 Digital Devices are electronic devices which uses
discrete, numerable data and processes for all its
operations.
 Devices are of:
 Portable devices
 Personal devices
PORTABLE DIGITAL DEVICES
 A portable Digital device is any device that can easily
be carried.
 Portable devices are becoming an increasingly
important part of personal computing as the
capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and smart
phones continue to improve.
 A portable device may also be called a
handheld device or mobile device.
 Smart Phone
 Laptop or Tablet
 A tablet PC

 Symbian
PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS
 Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
 are handheld devices with features such as calendar,
notes, and so on. They are also known as a palmtop
computer. They can be used to access
the Internet usually through Wi-Fi.
 Current Popular PDA Operating Systems
 RIM BlackBerry
 Linux
 Palm
 Symbian
 Microsoft Pocket PC
 Microsoft Windows Mobile
GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM
 The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite
navigation system.
 There are several places where GPS information can
found. It can be very useful for forensic investigations
in certain situations. GPS devices have expanded
their capabilities and features as the technology has
improved.
GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM
 Digital Camera Images with GPS Information
 Some recent digital cameras have built-in GPS
receivers (or external modules you can connect to the
camera). This makes it possible for the camera to
record where exactly a photo was taken.
 Cell Phones with GPS
 Some recent cell phones (e.g. a Motorola EZX
phone such as the Motorola A780) have a built-in
GPS receiver and navigation software. This software
might record the paths travelled (and the date/time),
which can be very useful in forensic (scientific tests or
techniques used in connection with the detection of
crime.) investigations.
AUDIO DEVICES
 Audio devices allow you to play or record audio,
which can be sounds, music, speech, etc. These
devices can be interesting for a forensic investigator,
as they can often contain not only audio files, but also
text documents, images and so on.
 Apple iPod
 iRiver
VIDEO DEVICES
 Video devices allow you to play or record video.
These devices can be interesting for a forensic
investigator, as they can often contain not only video
files, but also audio files, text documents, images and
so on.
 Sony PSP
 Play Station Portable (PSP) is Sony's first entry into
the handheld gaming market. The PSP also sports
multimedia features including music and video
playback, a photo viewer, and an online store.
WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES
There are many reasons
 students become:
 confident,
 connected,
 actively-involved,
 lifelong learners“
 prepared to realise their potential
 contribute to society and the workforce.
WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES
 Digital devices have the potential to:
 expand and enhance interaction in the classroom,
 enable more real-world activities,
 improve learning environments,
 and engage students in new and exciting ways.
 Opportunities for collaboration and problem-solving
are expanded beyond the classroom in an online
environment.
 Help students engage more deeply in their learning
and lift their achievement.
WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES
 supports expanded community and international
involvement in learning, both face-to-face and online
 enables students to learn in relevant, real world 21st
century contexts
 allows students to learn, create, share, and
collaborate anywhere, at any time
 opens up a new world of resources for students,
providing much more knowledge than any one teacher
or school library
 Greater flexibility in learning pathways,
 Empowering students to learn in a more personalised
way
WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES
 enables students to personalise their learning
experience (recognising every student's strengths,
talents, and needs, building on their identity,
language, and culture)
 helps build on students’ prior and current knowledge,
needs, and interests
 encourages greater collaboration between students,
teachers, and school leaders
 supports teachers to engage in blended, personalised
professional, and peer collaboration.
PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE
CLASSROOM
 Peace of mind
 Parents know that in an emergency the student can
contact them and vice versa. In addition, more and
more cellphones and smartphones contain GPS
devices that can be tracked if necessary.
 Instant answers
 Access to the Internet provides for instant answers for
the curious. This is the search-and-learn environment
kids are involved in today.
PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE
CLASSROOM
 Wider access to information
 students can be exposed to a world of creative
ideas outside of their bubble. They can learn
another language. They have access to an endless
array of options available, not just to help them
learn, but to gain skills they might not otherwise
have access to.
 Access to video:
 Electronic devices in the classroom can enhance
the learning experience by providing instant video
access. Students are made more real and easier to
digest in the form of instant video availability.
PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE
CLASSROOM
 Social learning:
 We tend to look at the negative sides of social
media. However, there can also be an
educational aspect. Social learning is a great
way for students to share information, thoughts
and ideas on a subject. Properly focused, some
students, who may be quiet or shy in a
classroom, may blossom in a social learning
situation made possible by digital devices.
CONS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE
CLASSROOM
 Harmful effects of digital devices
 too much exposure for students who have video
screens in front of their faces or computers in
their laps. If students frequently use these
devices at home, additional exposure at school
could be viewed as harmful.
 Inappropriate materials:
 Distraction from schoolwork
 With the temptation of social media and texting
in their hands, students may focus solely on
their social life instead of the lesson plan.
CONS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE
CLASSROOM
 Child predators and cyber bullying
 (the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically
by sending messages of threatening nature.)
 Using digital devices at school creates just that much
more exposure and potential danger for students. In
addition, cyber bullying is also an increasing issue.
Permitting use of digital devices in the classroom could
potentially lead to more of it.
 Provide a ‘dis-connect’
 too much time with digital devices provide a disconnect
of students from face-to-face social activities, family
communications and nature. Digital devices in the
classroom would probably lead to an even greater such
disconnection.
SHOULD INSTITUTE PERMIT DIGITAL
DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM?
 There are institutes that have seen great
improvements by allowing the use of digital devices
in the classroom.
 What is clear is that if such use is permitted, there
should be guidelines and rules in place.
 Students should be taught online safety,
 Use of judgment in determining good quality
sources of information,
 Students restraint from personal use in the
classroom.
REASONS TO ALLOW DIGITAL
DEVICES IN CLASSROOM
 They help facilitate conversation.
 They help in promoting a more inclusive
classroom.
 They help foster a more democratic atmosphere.
 They are more environmentally friendly than
paper.
 They offer an opportunity to educate students
about media use.
EXPANSION OF DIGITAL DEVICES
 Digital devices are evolving at a rapid rate.
 It has changed the way you:
 manage your work
 communicate with others
 entertain yourself.

  • 3. PORTABLE DIGITAL DEVICES  A portable Digital device is any device that can easily be carried.  Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and smart phones continue to improve.  A portable device may also be called a handheld device or mobile device.  Smart Phone  Laptop or Tablet  A tablet PC
  • 4. PERSONAL DIGITAL DEVICES  Cell phones  Smart Phones  Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)  Global Position System (GPS)  Audio devices  Video devices  Unusual devices
  • 5. SMART PHONES  Mobile operating systems and devices  Android  iOS  Linux  Microsoft Pocket PC  Microsoft Windows Mobile  Palm  RIM BlackBerry  Symbian
  • 6. PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS  Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)  are handheld devices with features such as calendar, notes, and so on. They are also known as a palmtop computer. They can be used to access the Internet usually through Wi-Fi.  Current Popular PDA Operating Systems  RIM BlackBerry  Linux  Palm  Symbian  Microsoft Pocket PC  Microsoft Windows Mobile
  • 7. GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM  The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system.  There are several places where GPS information can found. It can be very useful for forensic investigations in certain situations. GPS devices have expanded their capabilities and features as the technology has improved.
  • 8. GLOBAL POSITION SYSTEM  Digital Camera Images with GPS Information  Some recent digital cameras have built-in GPS receivers (or external modules you can connect to the camera). This makes it possible for the camera to record where exactly a photo was taken.  Cell Phones with GPS  Some recent cell phones (e.g. a Motorola EZX phone such as the Motorola A780) have a built-in GPS receiver and navigation software. This software might record the paths travelled (and the date/time), which can be very useful in forensic (scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of crime.) investigations.
  • 9. AUDIO DEVICES  Audio devices allow you to play or record audio, which can be sounds, music, speech, etc. These devices can be interesting for a forensic investigator, as they can often contain not only audio files, but also text documents, images and so on.  Apple iPod  iRiver
  • 10. VIDEO DEVICES  Video devices allow you to play or record video. These devices can be interesting for a forensic investigator, as they can often contain not only video files, but also audio files, text documents, images and so on.  Sony PSP  Play Station Portable (PSP) is Sony's first entry into the handheld gaming market. The PSP also sports multimedia features including music and video playback, a photo viewer, and an online store.
  • 11. WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES There are many reasons  students become:  confident,  connected,  actively-involved,  lifelong learners“  prepared to realise their potential  contribute to society and the workforce.
  • 12. WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES  Digital devices have the potential to:  expand and enhance interaction in the classroom,  enable more real-world activities,  improve learning environments,  and engage students in new and exciting ways.  Opportunities for collaboration and problem-solving are expanded beyond the classroom in an online environment.  Help students engage more deeply in their learning and lift their achievement.
  • 13. WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES  supports expanded community and international involvement in learning, both face-to-face and online  enables students to learn in relevant, real world 21st century contexts  allows students to learn, create, share, and collaborate anywhere, at any time  opens up a new world of resources for students, providing much more knowledge than any one teacher or school library  Greater flexibility in learning pathways,  Empowering students to learn in a more personalised way
  • 14. WHY WE USE DIGITAL DEVICES  enables students to personalise their learning experience (recognising every student's strengths, talents, and needs, building on their identity, language, and culture)  helps build on students’ prior and current knowledge, needs, and interests  encourages greater collaboration between students, teachers, and school leaders  supports teachers to engage in blended, personalised professional, and peer collaboration.
  • 15. PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM  Peace of mind  Parents know that in an emergency the student can contact them and vice versa. In addition, more and more cellphones and smartphones contain GPS devices that can be tracked if necessary.  Instant answers  Access to the Internet provides for instant answers for the curious. This is the search-and-learn environment kids are involved in today.
  • 16. PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM  Wider access to information  students can be exposed to a world of creative ideas outside of their bubble. They can learn another language. They have access to an endless array of options available, not just to help them learn, but to gain skills they might not otherwise have access to.  Access to video:  Electronic devices in the classroom can enhance the learning experience by providing instant video access. Students are made more real and easier to digest in the form of instant video availability.
  • 17. PROS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM  Social learning:  We tend to look at the negative sides of social media. However, there can also be an educational aspect. Social learning is a great way for students to share information, thoughts and ideas on a subject. Properly focused, some students, who may be quiet or shy in a classroom, may blossom in a social learning situation made possible by digital devices.
  • 18. CONS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM  Harmful effects of digital devices  too much exposure for students who have video screens in front of their faces or computers in their laps. If students frequently use these devices at home, additional exposure at school could be viewed as harmful.  Inappropriate materials:  Distraction from schoolwork  With the temptation of social media and texting in their hands, students may focus solely on their social life instead of the lesson plan.
  • 19. CONS OF DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM  Child predators and cyber bullying  (the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of threatening nature.)  Using digital devices at school creates just that much more exposure and potential danger for students. In addition, cyber bullying is also an increasing issue. Permitting use of digital devices in the classroom could potentially lead to more of it.  Provide a ‘dis-connect’  too much time with digital devices provide a disconnect of students from face-to-face social activities, family communications and nature. Digital devices in the classroom would probably lead to an even greater such disconnection.
  • 20. SHOULD INSTITUTE PERMIT DIGITAL DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM?  There are institutes that have seen great improvements by allowing the use of digital devices in the classroom.  What is clear is that if such use is permitted, there should be guidelines and rules in place.  Students should be taught online safety,  Use of judgment in determining good quality sources of information,  Students restraint from personal use in the classroom.
  • 21. REASONS TO ALLOW DIGITAL DEVICES IN CLASSROOM  They help facilitate conversation.  They help in promoting a more inclusive classroom.  They help foster a more democratic atmosphere.  They are more environmentally friendly than paper.  They offer an opportunity to educate students about media use.
  • 22. EXPANSION OF DIGITAL DEVICES  Digital devices are evolving at a rapid rate.  It has changed the way you:  manage your work  communicate with others  entertain yourself.
