The Australian Physiotherapy Association is using an ePortfolio tool to support physiotherapists pursuing specialization. The tool allows candidates to develop learning contracts, upload evidence of meeting professional standards, and discuss ideas with peers and facilitators online. Initial training programs using the ePortfolio focused on musculoskeletal and sports specializations. Participants found the ePortfolio inspiring and a great learning opportunity. The APA plans to expand use of ePortfolios for additional professional development programs.

Editor's Notes
- We provide PD opportunities for new grads through to retirement. PD includes lectures, courses, symposiums, breakfasts and an annual conference.
- Our PD events are primarily organised through our national groups. The national groups are sub-disciplines of physiotherapy, and are run by volunteer committees. APA members can join any of the national groups, with some members belonging to several groups at any one time. By joining a national group, the member gets preferential rates at PD events, plus communications throughout the year regarding evidence-based practice and upcoming activities.
- New grads are encouraged to complete our introductory courses, plus level 1, 2 and 3 courses where available. What is a titled physio? Can apply for titling through an experiential or academic pathway. Experiential – demonstrate experience, knowledge and skills in the discipline. Academic – through accredited postgraduate university courses. What is a specialist physio? Specialisation: Through original contribution. By submission of a thesis or published works. Through a two-year training programme, includes mentoring and support through the APA.
- Interim pathway – if they believe they are of a higher standing than other physios, they could apply to become a fellow of the ACP. They had to complete a document which detailed how they met specific criteria. If it was agreed that they were of a higher standing, they were allowed to sit the final exams.
