This document discusses a collaborative model for continued professional development (CPD). It proposes creating a centralized CPD platform to improve efficiency by allowing healthcare professionals to record their CPD activities in one place aligned with the standards of different regulatory bodies. An audit would first analyze CPD practices at sample centers in the UK, Australia and Spain to inform the design of categories and tools on the platform. Individuals and organizations would benefit from collaborating to improve CPD through a shared online platform.

Bea Brown gave a presentation on her research for the Sax Institute at the University of Sydney for the School of Public Health's 2013 research presentation day.
This workshop will look at patient care pathways and demonstrate how simulation can combine process flow across; services, clinical best practice and the progression of patients through disease states, to test the impact of improvement initiatives on patient care, outcomes, costs and resource utilization.
Using examples from recent projects on simulating care pathways within HIV services, and simulating future service needs for dementia care, we show the results of combining disease progression with service utilization.
In the workshop, we’ll consider what the ideal pathway model would look like and invite you to work with us to build a pathway using our latest technology.

Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The

Editor's Notes
HCPC define CPD as ‘a range of learning activities through which health and care professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely and effectively within their evolving scope of practice’.
CPD helps us continue to learn and develop throughout our careers by keeping our knowledge and skills up-to-date we are able to work safely and effectively.
“Continuing professional development plays a role in protecting the public by ensuring that registered practitioners are up to date with best practice in the profession” (Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia)
In the UK the Health and Care Professions Council was created to protect the public.
They keep a register of health and care professionals who meet our standards for their training, professional skills, behaviour and health.
You must undertake CPD to stay registered. Standards are set which CPD must meet. When renewing registration, you need to confirm that you have met these standards.
From 2008, whenever a profession renews its registration, we will randomly audit (check) the CPD of a proportion of registrants from that profession. The registrants randomly chosen have to send in evidence to show how their CPD meets the standards
The HCPC UK standards tie in with our visions and values
-Quality- CPD will contribute to the quality of practice and service delivery
Improving our knowledge and understanding
-Access – CPD will be mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice.
Learning about future practice helps us stay at the forefront of our field and access will be improved to up and coming technologies and techniques
-Efficiency – CPD not only benefits our own development but also benefits service user. Making us more efficient
Collaboration- Collaborating CPD helps us learn from each other/share best practice. Learning more together than apart
Compassion- Reflecting helps us learn from experiences showing compassion to patients. Collaborating and sharing knowledge and learning from each other shows compassion towards each other.
Innovation- Improving our knowledge. Learning new procedures techniques helping to make health care better
Outcomes- Improving our ourselves as well as the service we provide.
We all achieve standards of CPD on a regular basis but what we need to improve on is documenting these activities, reflecting on them and sharing our practice
By working together we achieve more
What brought the gap in CPD to our attention…
2 members of staff from centre were audited – need for regular CPD highlighted
Staff now aware of different categories and standards
Started weekly CPD with Sue to try up to date and work more efficiently by collaborating our work
But this collaboration only helped rads. What was required of other staff groups….
Other centres not benefitting – can we share our knowledge?
Could Australia and Spain also benefit from sharing this knowledge
We are aware of what is expected of radiographers and have provided an example of what would be appropriate for this role
Results of audit will help build a similar platform for other staffing groups
Categories: Work based learning, professional activity, formal education, self directed, other
Platform currently being developed prompts reflections following training activities
Training and development is CPD
Company training e.g. mandatory training will contribute to CPD if reflected on
Platform will be based on intranet and managed by learning and development team
Platform will not only your mandatory training but link to reflection templates
Platform will be on intranet so all shared potential to be tied in with cornerstone on demand /new training and learning platform
Audit will help us standardise CPD and enable collaboration between UK, Aus and Spain.
CPD enables development and will be a selling point
Ultimate Outcome – a efficient model for CPD that not only keeps our training up to date but will help us share practice /reflect and meet CPD standards expected of us
Need to audit what is required of different staffing groups e.g. physics, dosim
Questionnaire – sample of centres and staff
UK company do not employ there own Drs directly so they will not be included
Individuals:
focus on how they can become a more competent and effective professional.
Genesis Care
Providing CPD learning benefits your organisation through recognition and increased brand perception.
Internal use of CPD encourages and promotes a healthy learning culture for your organisation, leading to a more fulfilled workforce and retaining valuable staff.
Many organisations have staff with CPD obligations as members of professional bodies.
Training and learning increases confidence and overall capability, and compliments career aspirations.
CPD enables individuals to adapt positively to changes.
Planning CPD helps to be more efficient with time, and recording CPD properly provides evidence of professional development (this can be useful for supervision and appraisals).
CPD shows a clear commitment to self development and professionalism. CPD provides an opportunity for an individual to identify knowledge gaps and to resolve these in a recognisable approach to improvement.
