2. A Brief Note On North American Aerospace Defense Command...
A. Introduction
NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) is always prepared to intercept hijacked
airplanes with fighter jets, and are able to debilitate them or shoot them down Fact or fiction? This
is a fact; however, on the day of September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked with
the intent to crash into the world trade center, the pentagon, and possibly the white house. Three of
these planes were successful on this mission and there is substantial evidence that NORAD knew
about these hijackings, at least after the first one hit the World Trade Center. NORAD generals said
they learned of the hijackings in time to scramble fighter jets. (NewsOne) Why did they instead
choose to stand down? Obviously, NORAD was commanded by a higher authority to abstain from
thwarting these men s attempts. This must be because the corrupt government of the United States
either knew these attacks were going to take place, or they allowed them to happen to benefit from
the after effects. The government may not have been completely behind the 9/11 attacks, but they
most certainly had some part in it and had the capability to prevent them; therefore, we must
consider the theories we could possibly believe, and those that we dismiss outright through analysis
and contemplative thought.

3. The Sounds of Sonny s Blues
Sean Cohen English 1197 Sec 001 April 10th, 2012 The Sounds of Sonny s Blues James Baldwin
s Sonny s Blues is a short story focused around the narration of Sonny s brother. The narrator in the
case of Sonny s Blues is the most important character in a cast of characters not only because he is
the narrator, but due to the dynamic change of his character we see at the end of the story. Baldwin
effectively uses the first person narration of Sonny s brother in order to convey the theme of
communication. Throughout the entire story of Sonny s Blues, the narrator and his brother interact
through exchanging words countless times. The question posed is whether or not the narrator can
truly hear what his brother is saying to him.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And Sonny couldn t take that. (p. 91) This interaction between Sonny and Isabel and her family is
a critical moment Baldwin uses to convey the theme of communication. Sonny is putting his heart
and soul into the music as a way to communicate the way he feels, but the people around him do
not understand his interpretation and in turn cannot communicate with Sonny. The dynamic
character with the most impact in the story is easily the narrator. A dynamic character is a
character that undergoes a major change in the story. We see this major change finally come in
the last sequence of the story. Sonny and the narrator go to a nightclub where the narrator
watches Sonny perform on the piano. This is where the reader finally sees the narrator gain an
understanding of his brother. And, while Creole listened, Sonny moved, deep within exactly like
someone in torment. I had never before thought of how awful the relationship must be between
the musician and his instrument. He has to fill it, this instrument, with the breath of life, his own.
(p. 99) The narrator finally understand why Sonny is attracted to music. Music gives him the
ability to express himself, to communicate his feelings with others in a way words do not allow.
A tortured soul, Sonny is able to be free of the torment of life when he plays the piano. Freedom
lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we would listen, that
he would never be free until we

4. Case Study Of Swift Burgers
Karen Deria is a married mother of two children in a typical family home in Marikina City. To
support her children s education, Mrs. Deria decided to venture in a burger making business
after realizing that she has a great recipe for burgers. In January 2016, she made use of a capital
of в‚±500,000 to start this venture. She named her business Swift Burgers because it aims to
produce ready to serve burgers in hopes of competing with the large fast food chains around her
area while providing customers with affordable yet delicious burgers. Ultimately, she envisions
Swift Burgers to be easily available and affordable all over the Philippines.
Swift Burgers can be classified as a sole proprietorship, or an unincorporated business owned and
run by Karen Deria herself, with no distinction between the business and the owner. In other
words, she is entitled to all profits and is solely responsible for all the business s debts, losses and

When Rayouf Alhumedhi and her friends chat together on the messaging app WhatsApp, they don t

My friends, who don t wear the headscarf, they found something, Rayouf says. For me? I had to
opt to not use an image of a woman wearing a headscarf. Because there isn t one.
The 15 year old high school student decided to change that.
Rayouf was born in Saudi Arabia and currently lives in Berlin, Germany. She wrote a proposal to
create a hijab emoji. Hijab is another word for headscarf. Many Muslim women wear such scarves
every day for religious reasons. For many Muslims, it is not proper for a women s hair to ... Show

She wrote to Apple asking for a headscarf emoji, but she never heard back from the company.
Then, on the app Snapchat, she watched a video about how to propose a new emoji. The video
explained that anyone can ask Unicode for a new emoji, and gave directions on how to get started.
Rayouf sent two paragraphs describing her idea to Unicode. Her proposal was much shorter than
typical emoji requests, which can include pages and pages of details and designs. Still, she heard
back from a member of Unicode, who offered to help her shape up her idea for formal
consideration. An artist created the headscarf emoji design for her.
Rayouf s proposal would create a headscarf emoji that could be used with the many human
emojis that already exist. It works kinds of like putting an outfit on a paper doll. The proposal is
supposed to be formally reviewed by Unicode in November. If it is approved, the new emoji could
be announced as soon as mid 2017.

This is very minor, yet it is a very important aspect in the story. This also portraysthat you can

people to get what they want. This, more thanothers, is a very strange topic, this is because not
many people have seen someone being torture, which is also a strange thing to speak of, and this
makes the topic even more anomalous. With abook that contains a man tied upon a table and

11. The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics Essay
The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics
Public opinion is defined in the text as the distribution of the population s beliefs about politics
and policy issues (Edwards, Wattenberg, and Lineberry 150). On paper, it sounds so simple; in
reality it is much more difficult to determine. The most common method for ascertaining and
consolidating public opinion has been through the widespread use of polls. Their popularity has
steadily increased over the years. One reason is that they provide an accurate, reliable
representation of the opinions of an entire population and supply decision makers with valuable
insight that may be used to determine a future course of action. However, not all polls are created
equal. Polls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without a randomly selected sample, the results can only be applied to the specific persons
questioned (Blake 1). This is why results from polls that allow self selection, such as those found
on the web, or in your mailbox, automatically demand a higher level of scrutiny and skepticism.
Wording and ordering of interview questions is another area that demands major attention.
Words, terms and phrases should be stated and ordered in such a way as to create as little room
for bias as possible, and should be presented, in full, with the polling results (Blake 2). Question
wording has been called the biggest source of bias and error in data , and is therefore an aspect
of polling that will always leave room for criticism (Gallup 4). Occasional ill wording of questions
is tolerable, if not unavoidable, as long as it is not obviously meant to tilt the results or prompt a
certain response.
However, it is not unheard of nor is it uncommon for such polling practices to occur. Some attempts
to persuade are definitely more malicious in nature than others. This is the subject of the article
When Push Comes to Poll , by Larry Sabato and Glenn Simpson. They outline several types of
sneaky polling practices. But, by far, Sabato and Simpson agree that negative persuasive polls are
the worst! These polls target a specific

Orlan: Body as Identity ARTH 102 Yuanyuan Chen Instructor: Dr. Geoffrey Carr April 5th,2016
Body art as self representation has become more pervasive in popular culture within the past 50
years in western cultures. From the body as the model of Greek artistry to 20th and 21st century
punk rock safety pins as facial art and permanent tattooing, the body is a canvas upon which
artists purvey their message, whatever it may be. As such, Orlan is a fearless artist on the world

biochemical status of ethical issues are prevalent in modern society. Change of appearance in
human development appears in one artistic expressional event after another, such as: Austronesian

14. Prohibition And The Prohibition Of America
The prohibition was a divided experiment that unintentionally brought organized crime, flourished
the presence of speakeasies in America and created a high rise of criminals in America. The
backfiring of the prohibition brought America an uprising in organized crime; criminals and the
consumption, manufacturing and selling of alcohol became more expensive and profitable to
those involved. Silk suits, guns, money and booze were the popular credentials amongst the finest
in the bootlegging and mob business. The prohibition had been recognized as an extraordinary
business opportunity and was exploited as such. In most major cities, gangs had been stocking up
on alcohol in anticipation for the beginning of the ban, leaving them with a guaranteed profit.
Alcohol became a keen part of the more urban culture of the 1920s despite the ban. People sought
out alcohol at illegal bars, known as speakeasies and through bootlegging. The authorities of the
time had earned the reputation of turning a blind eye to the illegal consumption and production of
alcohol, for the right price. Gangsters ruled the cities and in most cases, owned their streets.
Bribing government officials was common, and people were increasingly crafty in the way they
would hide alcohol such as hollowed out canes, false books and hip flasks. Violence on the streets
increased, as did unemployment. Tim Nash, The Finer Times The prohibition created drastic

Manufacturing becomes more and more complicated when production series are short, products are
diversified and production technology is variable. In the case of short series production,
Manufacturing Execution Systems join the cyber physical part of production with virtual
manufacturing services and business level operations. Unfortunately, most of the existing
architectures follow the paradigm of hierarchical MES placed between the control systems and
business application level. They have fixed interfaces to production facilities and a predefined set

The traditional design of manufacturing control systems does not allow for rapidly expanding
options in materials, processes, interfaces to product models that have a number of variants. Holons
allow the implementation of production variants and the rapid reconfiguration of the machines and
robots. Proposed MES architecture supports the capability of production systems. Demand chain
management will allow for a significant reduction in waste and will increase the profitability of
production systems. Flexible production planning will effect in reducing the setup and changeover
time and costs. The strategic target of proposed MES solution is one piece flow production that
means the feasibility of short series production (up to one element) by using the production lines
designed formerly for mass manufacturing.
Like all industrial solutions, the proposed MES also has to fit the existing standards accepted by
industry. The authors define an MES functional model that complies with the third part of the

Resistance induced via mutation in the DNA: Mutation in the genes that alters the activity of the

cells, these mutations only occur in the presence of antimicrobial agents and are not frequent (Jose
et al, 2015). There are two types of mutations observed among two different population of Gram

Gram negative cocci is usually associated with the amino acid substitution in the PBPs sequences.

Conjugation is another mechanism through which bacteria transfer resistance genes among each
other. Conjugation uses mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as plasmids and transposons as
vehicles to share valuable genetic information (Manson et al., 2010). Lastly, the use of integrons
allows bacteria to accumulate multiple resistance genes on their chromosomes (Jose et al., 2015).
Integrons are site specific recombination systems that recruit open reading frames in the form of
mobile gene cassettes. These mobile gene cassettes are then incorporated into the host
chromosomes, resulting in the addition of new genes along with appropriate machinery to ensure
that the new genes are expressed adequately in the host cell (Jose et al., 2015; Thomas et al., 2005).
Resistance via modification of the anti microbial compounds: Bacterial pathogens have evolved
strategies to chemically modify the antibiotics via the production of enzymes that adds specific
moieties to the compounds, inhibiting their therapeutic effects (Jose at al., 2015). These enzymes
exert their action through the process acetylation, phosphorylation and or adenylation to sterically
hinder the compound so it is no longer able to bind its target. Due to these biochemical reactions,
the drug is unable to bind its target sites and thus results in increased resistance and higher MICs
among bacterial populations (Wilson, 2014;

Cooking the potato latkas is my favorite part. Potato latkas are creamy mash potatoes that are fried
in sizzling oil resulting in the crispy goodness of a perfect potato pancake. I remember the first time
we made them, they were disgusting! They were too salty and mushy, others burnt and others
turned out black which was certainly not appealing to the tastebuds. The irony of the situation was
that my dad is somewhat of a chef and he had never made anything unappetizing until that day and
as a result of that farcical moment we have adjusted the recipe, but Hanukkah has never been the
same. In spite of the fact that it was our first failed attempt, the memory allows me to remember that
incident every Hanukkah hence making it a tradition in my household. Once we began making the

Ryanair operating on secondary airports catches mainly the attention of new customers for whom
traveling by air is a new habit. Considering traveling routines of European customers it might be
difficult to take away market share from charter airlines since their passengers buy holiday tickets
in a travel package . Ryanair faces problems on domestic markets where competition is already
very high and other full service airlines provide only slightly higher prices than the ones Ryanair
would be able to offer.
Opportunities
Ryanair is in general benefiting from the crises in the airline industry that are occurring at the
moment. The company is young and does not face problems in adapting to new environments at
the same level as the flag carriers. Developing small continental operating bases, such as Hahn
closed to Frankfurt, Germany and Charleroi in Brussels, Belgium, which will allow them to serve
more routes and to interconnect flights between the bases. Airline market and target business

Threats

budget business and a rise in fuel prices. Being forced to gain market share from mature airlines

22. Essay Emotion in T.S. Eliot s The Love Song of J. Alfred...
Emotion in T.S. Eliot s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
In his poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot subtly conveys a wide variety of
Prufrock s emotions; he creates pathos for the speaker by employing the objective correlative,
which Eliot defines as a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events [that] shall be the formula of
that particular emotion ( Hamlet and His Problems ).
The first stanza introduces Prufrock s isolation, as epitomized metaphorically by half deserted
streets (4): while empty streets imply solitude, Eliot s diction emphasize Prufrock having been
abandoned by the other half needed for a relationship or an argument (8). Hoping for a companion,
Prufrock speaks to the reader when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The eyes (55) and arms (62) that Prufrock claims to have known are synecdoches for women;
since he does not say he is familiar with their hearts, which would metaphorically imply
experience with their love, Prufrock only knows women physically. He gives one explanation for
this by noting the perfume and dress (65) that make him digress (66) from presumably his goal:
instead of fostering relationships, Prufrock focuses on sexual/sensual aspects. In spite of this,
Eliot provides insight to Prufrock desiring more than physical intimacy through the repeated
mention of meals: toast and tea (34), tea and cakes and ices (79), marmalade (88), tea cups (102);
these references indicate a wish to no longer dine alone, and Prufrock saying, Among the porcelain,
among some talk of you and me exemplifies his aspiration for domestic life.
Eliot explains Prufrock s isolation by hinting at the man s anxiety. When Prufrock says, There will
be time to murder and create, (29), he likely refers to the elimination of possibilities and the
manifestation of a consequent situation and/or problem; he could refer to, for example, how best to
use the time before...toast and tea (34), meaning breakfast, i.e. a night. Copulating would murder
the opportunity of talking all night and could create a problem in the form of an illegitimate child,
while sleeping would eliminate any options, thus forcing Prufrock to

The opportunity to work together with physicians from every field, care for patients of all ages
and be at the forefront of diagnosing a wide range of pathology from acute to chronic make
radiology the right fit for me.
Early in my third year I had the opportunity to spend a half day per week with a local radiologists
in a small hospital while on my Family Medicine clerkship. Among many interesting cases, I
remember one in particular. Mrs. P was in her second trimester and had undergone an ultrasound
revealing a low lying placenta. The radiologist met with the Family medicine physician to inform
them of the finding and discuss further management. Later that week I met the patient in clinic
where she expressed gratitude that her diagnosis was made but uneasiness with what this meant for
her pregnancy. Together, the three decided it would be best to deliver at a larger outside hospital.
In the remainder of my third year I came to further appreciate just how integral radiology is to
patient care. Whether it was quickly diagnosing appendicitis in the middle of the night, helping an
oncologist determine staging to guide therapy, or draining an abdominal abscess; radiology was
often central to determining the management plan.

25. The Effects of Nature and Nurture in Middle Childhood
The Effects of Nature and Nurture in Middle Childhood Middle Childhood is the name given for
the age division from 6 to 11 years of a child s life. They are also known as the school years.
During this time a child s health, education, and emotional well being are all undergoing changes.
Though not as drastic as the changes they will soon face in adolescence, they are steady, and the
impact that nature and nurture will have on these aspects reach far and wide across the many
developments they face in their lives. Heath is of the utmost importance in raising a child, and is the
biggest factor of a child s physical development in middle childhood. When a child is receiving the

With healthy children physical activity and exercise is key, and there are many forms of it,
such as sports, physical education, and rough and tumble play. A dominance hierarchy is
established through rough and tumble play. Through this activity, it becomes clear who is the
stronger child, which is a way in which nature helps define who is the leader in a group friends,
and who would win, should a conflict arise. Rough and tumble play is common in school
recesses, where children are developing cognitively. If a child has been to preschool before,
chances are, they ll be ahead of the curve a bit when learning to solve problems, and learning
how to read and write. This is another major way in which nurture has its effects on a child s
outcome in development. If a child has received enough attention, and has been read to, then
they are perfectly ready to solve problems rationally, in an organized way. While at this point it is
mostly up to the child to engage in memory strategies like rehearsal, and organization, it is also
up to the parents to impose the proper discipline to make sure that their child uses a part of their
time after school to use these strategies to help them study for a test. If a child is raised in a low
SES environment, where they may be left home alone, for a length of time after they ve arrived
home from school, the child may be watching TV or doing something else while unsupervised.

equality in general whereas the second wave feminism went more in depth about the social and
cultural inequalities.
The first wave feminism was mostly about legal issues, specifically woman s suffrage, or the right
to vote. Before women could even think about changing the government policies, they had to raise
awareness. While some acts may have been passed, the feminist movement did not truly start until

When you have depression, nothing is enjoyable. Nothing can make you smile. These words are

Macbeth comes to terms with his sins and from this, realises that the choice or either trying to

Macbeth s character, and shows that his ambition truly does override anything else, as he chooses to

these beliefs of freedom Americans mistreated people of different skin colors for man years, even
to the extent of slavery itself.Even after slavery was ended the mistreatment continued to the

41. The Key Areas Separating Bosses From Leaders
By examining the definitions of the words, you ll already be able to notice the intricacies at play.
While at the outset the two words can seem rather similar and interchangeable, the closer
examination highlights differences that give both roles a different meaning. So, what are the key
areas separating bosses from leaders? The major differences between the two can be divided into
six core areas of the focus, the driving force, the approach to work and objectives, the source of their
authority, the communication and delegation style, and their accountability.
The focus
When it comes to an organisation, the key consideration is often the focus of the organisation.
What is it for and why? The underlying focus is what drives an organisation, but also the
individual to perform the required tasks. The focus gives direction and largely determines the
approach to work. So, what is the focus for the two?
For a boss the end objective is profit. A boss is in a role, which is about guaranteeing the
organisation the best financial results that ll help guarantee the continuation of the business. That s
behind the boss interest in supervising things getting done. The boss is not interested in how the
subordinates get from Point A to Point B because the result is all that matters. If you are able to
achieve the goals and do it in an efficient manner, then the boss is happy as this guarantees the
organisation enjoys a profit. The orientation of the boss is about achieving the goals,

42. The American Dream In Ralph Ellison s Invisible Man
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison was written in 1952, a time in which the African American
community was facing new hardships that differed from the hardships of the generation before
them. Slavery in the United States was outlawed in 1865 after the Civil War with the passing of the
Thirteenth Amendment, but Jim Crow Laws, social norms, and inherited biases continued to make
the American Dream virtually impossible for anyone whose skin color was darker than eggshell.
Today, many of us believe that outright racismhas been defeated; that because we eradicated
sayings like separate but equal , and white is right means there is no way we are like the people in
the 1800s or the early 1900s. In Invisible Man, Ellison highlights the differences between two
generation s problems, however, many of the stereotypes, phrases, and anecdotes Ellison utilizes in
this work shines a light on our own generational issues with race.
President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to
win or lose. L.B.J alludes to the idea of an American dream that if you failed yesterday you can
work hard enough and still make a good life for yourself or your family, but can African
Americans work hard enough? Many older generations of the black community did truly believe in
the American dream. When someone goes from being in bondage to being free, even if that
freedom is limited, it may feel as though anything is possible but for the generations that were

During my clinical rotations I have had numerous oppurtunities to asses the mental health status of
elderly patients. The majority of the mental health assessements that I conducted were in
accordance with the Medicare annual wellness assessment. The Medicare annual wellness is apart
of the Afforable Care Act program aimed towards improving, preventing and managing the
healthcare of patients.
According to Hains (2014),
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (Affordable Care Act) includes many
provisions aimed at improving the health of Americans and preventing the onset of chronic
conditions. The Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a part of the Affordable Care Act specifically
targeting older adults (age 65 and older). In 2011, Medicare beneficiaries became eligible for an
AWV, which includes a health risk assessment (HRA) and a customized wellness or personal
prevention plan. This AWV supplements the welcome to Medicare preventive visit, which is a one
time, comprehensive health assessment offered to beneficiaries within the first 12 months of
enrolling in Medicare. Medicare pays for one first AWV per beneficiary and subsequent visits on
an annual basis. The AWV can be provided by a physician, nurse practitioner (NP), clinical nurse
specialist, or physician assistant and should include, at the very least, a history and physical,
preventive screening, and personalized health planning. The law specifies that HRA guidelines will

45. Causes Of Soil In Africa
There are many reasons that the soil in Africa has seen decreased nutrients quality, ranging from
Africa s seasonal effect on soil, climate change and poor farming practices are all factors that
contribute to this phenomenon. Firstly, I will cover the natural reasons that Africa s soil tends to
be degraded as this is commonly debated to be the main reason for the soils degradation. Africa is
unique in that it has one of the strongest seasonal rain systems (very dry when rain isn t occurring
but when it does it rains heavily) in the world. This in and of itself can cause huge amounts of soil
erosionso it makes a lot of sense that much of Africa has poor soils. Furthermore, there was a study
done by M E Meadows that found According to the united nations, areas subject to desertification
are so called susceptible dry lands meaning they have an aridly index of .05 .65 she also
discovered that around 91% of Africa could potentially classify as an affected dry land. Dry
lands combined with highly seasonal rains are major causes of erosion, which in turn causes
soil to lose nutrients fast i.e. desertification. These are not the only natural causes. Over the
course of thousands of years the continuous leeching of the nutrients in the soils has caused the
soil to lose its quality. All of these compounds because Africa s soils are relatively poor to start
with the land forms and location of Africa make it harder to regenerate its natural nutrition. It is
getting to the point where some areas have become so degraded that there is no easy fix for this
problem. Later, I will cover what steps we can take to alleviate some of these effects and
hopefully reverse this problem, but for now Africa s soil is continuing to steadily decline. It
should be noted that there are some areas of Africa that are still incredibly fertile. The problem lies
in the fact that much of Africa is losing its arable land which will present problems in the very near
future.
Poor farming practices are also one of the leading causes of the desertification of sub Saharan
Africa. Much of Africa is still using practices which are quite harmful to the overall soil quality in
Africa. Most notably slash and burn techniques, this has especially

magazines had and still have a cult following Most readers of these magazines enjoy the
cheesiness of them and are well aware of their lack of validity. Now fake news appears on our
social media outlets. Many of the perpetrators of fake news don t try to hide it and a quick look
at their domain name will be a dead giveaway. However, some individuals would rather disguise
their domain to look like a reputable source such as CBS or NPR. Something must be done
about this problem, fake news has the potential to shape opinions and control politics. Think of
the Edgar Allan Poe quote believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see . This
statement reigns more true today than ever before. In this world of fake news, it is the
responsibility of the reader to separate truth from fiction. So why do people write fake news?
Some articles seem to be written specifically out of boredom and for the entertainment of its
readers. These articles should be specified as satire but are at times written as if they were
legitimate news stories. These are generally far fetched and can be disproven with a quick google

William Penn
William Penn was born and raised in England, but he is well known for what he did in the
Americas. First and foremost, William Penn was a religious nonconformist and writer: he wrote
numerous religious books over his lifetime. Second, Penn is responsible for the holy experiment :
the colony of Pennsylvania. He was a Quaker advocate, and as a proprietor had the opportunity to
practice the Quaker Peace testimony.
Penn was interested in religion from the time he was a child. When he was twelve years old he had
the opportunity to hear testimony from a traveling Quaker minister, Thomas Loe. Penn was touched
by Loe s message, and sought the authentic Christian message rather then focusing on institutional
religion. At the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Charles II owed Penn s father, Admiral Sir William Penn, and in return Penn persuaded the king to

Pennsylvania, which means Penn s woods, after his father. Penn decided that his colony was
going to be different from the rest of the colonies in that they were going to be a Quaker based
colony. He believed in a divine right of government and formed the government of Pennsylvania as
a holy experiment in governing. This type of government is considered being ahead of its time as it
set forth a representative form of government. The penal system was designed to reform not just
punish, and all prisoners except capital prisoners were entitled to bail, work houses were substituted
for dungeons and the death penalty was limited to murder and treason . Also, Penn instituted public
education and designed Philadelphia and other towns to promote health and fire safety. Being that

Testimony. He realized that a lot of the land that he was living on

51. Franz Kafka as a Hunger Artist
Through much of Franz Kafka s writing, the reader can see how his personal experiences and
viewpoints are clearly worked into his many stories. One of which stands out is his story A
Hunger Artist. In this story Kafka speaks through the hunger artist of the alienation and isolation
he feels in his own body, as well as the emptiness he feels as a result of the disconnected
relationship he and his father share. Ironically this emptiness manifests itself quite literally at the
end of Kafka s life, when he dies as a result of tuberculosis of the larynx, which causes him to
literally starve to death, just as the hunger artist in the story. It was said about his writing the early
manifestations of authentic originality were nurtured in solitary... Show more content on

Like the hunger artist, he too lived in a state of constant want for both food and recognition, as
he longed for his father s acceptance. From the very beginning of Kaka s life, his family had
been organized by, around, and for the benefit of his overbearing father. As a result of his father
s constant criticisms, Kafka began to criticize himself, as he felt crushed by his ever present
burden of guilt, which he turned into self hatred. One of the most significant influences on Kafka
s life and work was his domineering father. Kafka s stories often contain themes drawn from the
burden of his father s tyranny in his home life, depicting settings of confinement as well as
convoluted systems of punishment and other expressions of seemingly all powerful authority.
(Miline 100) He blames his father for having robbed him of his childhood, never giving him the
attention he is starving for, and like the hunger artist, he spends his whole life seeking it. The most

52. Romanticism In Oliver Twist
Introduction:
In mid 19th century England, realistic literature came as a response to the preceding romantic
period. The romantic period was known to emphasize the experiences of the individual and was
regarded as a highly aesthetic period. It was related with the movement of sensibility or
sentimentalism, which stressed the importance of emotions and feelings of sympathy (Kitson 328
329). Contrarily, realism during the Victorian age aimed to address economic and social issues in
society by depicting the struggles in the developing society as accurately as possible (Redd).
Consequently, in the 1830s, when Charles Dickens was writing Oliver Twist, it is justifiable that
elements of both realism and sentimentalism can be found in the novel. This ... Show more content

Most notably, Dickens depiction of London (in particular the workhouses and other social
institutions) and his criminal characters have a very prominent realistic effect. However before
going into detail about the realistic setting and characters, it would be beneficial to take a look
at Dickens preface for Oliver Twist. In his preface for Oliver Twist, Dickens justifies his reasons
for writing about the criminals of London; he had the impression that real thieves and
pickpockets were not portrayed correctly in literature during that time. For that reason, he felt
that it was necessary to show these crooks as they really were, for ever skulking uneasily through
the dirtiest paths of life (7). He also believed that doing this would be a service to society , and
that he did it as best as [he] could . He explains that he won t be writing about appealing and
pleasant situations; ...no merry makings in the snuggest of all possibly caverns, none of the
attractions of dress, no embroidery, no lace... (8). In essence, this preface foreshadows the
realistic elements in the novel by telling the readers where to look. Clearly the characters and
setting will be portrayed as honestly and truthfully as possible, without overlooking even one
hole in the Dodger s coat, or one scrap of curl paper in Nancy s dishevelled hair (9) and describing
the cold wet shelterless midnight streets of London; the foul and frowsy dens, where vice is

53. The Kyoto Protocol Extension Is Worthwhile
Introduction
In the face of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not only a nation s essential
task but also a global duty. Because of poorly regulated emissions, some greenhouse gases will
remain in the Earth s atmosphere for thousands of years. The mitigation of global environmental
emergencies requires uniform international standards and established rules. Therefore, international
policy coordination by multilateral agreement is indispensable. This policy paper aims to discuss
participation in the Kyoto Protocol Extension is worthwhile and what benefits and burdens await
the nation taking part in the efforts towards emissions reduction. Analysis
To begin with, several facts must be considered: (1) policy and economic implications, (2) cost
benefit analysis, and (3) global ethics.
Policy and Economic Implications. The environment is a type of public good, and the market
usually does not adequately protect the common resources which forces global community to bear
the cost of environmental degradation and other negative consequences thus causing dead weight
loss and market failure. This is known as the classic free rider problem and the paradox known as
the tragedy of the commons (Mankiw, 2012, p. 224). Negative externalities associated with the
global climate change are examples of a type of market failure (Gruber, 2013, p.123). It stresses the
need for international intervention and regulation such as environmental policies, environmental
taxes,

55. Egil s Saga Essay
The author most likely intended for Egil s Saga to be a historical documentation of Scandinavia,
its culture, and several of its inhabitants. The tale could also be seen as a folk tale, set in a realistic
setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not quite right. The epic accomplishes the
first possible intention through its many characters, the use known locations, and basing the
majority of the tale around two individual families that would have been well known around the
time it was written. However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was
more of a folktale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families, beginning far
before the birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale then follows these families
through the events that led up to the main plot of the epic, going so far as to keep detailed track
of who married who and where each character came from. An example of this would be the

Egil s Saga is quick paced and exaggerated, like a folk tale version of a family story. This stylistic
